Race-Day Recap

Too Sweet (Satono Aladdin) is now the favourite for the R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO in three weeks after an easy victory in the G2 Eclipse S. at Ellerslie for trainer Royden Bergerson, whose son Sam shares in the ownership and co-trained the second-placed horse.

The G1 NZ Oaks is the target for G2 Sir Patrick Hogan S. winner Real Class (Vadamos) unless she’s sold to Australia first.

Consistent mare Bourbon Empress gave Champion Sire Proisir a new stakes winner in the G2 Rich Hill Mile, and she’ll be set for a NZ$1 million race next.

Jockey Matt Cartwright made it a double with the G2 Rich Hill Mile win followed by the G3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup on Son Of Sun (Tavistock).

The Listed Kensington S. was won by 4-year-old mare Miraval Rose (Grunt) for trainer Grahame Begg, and she hadn’t won since this time last year.

Grand Pierro (Pierro) will be set for the Adelaide Cup after winning the Listed Bagot H. for trainer Jason Warren.

Iowna Merc breaks through to give Winning Rupert a new stakes winner in the Listed Canterbury Sprint.

Easy win for Too Sweet in G2 Eclipse Stakes

Ridden by Michael McNab, 2-year-old filly Too Sweet (NZ) (Satono Aladdin {Jpn}) jumped well and dictated the pace in the G2 Eclipse S. at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. She cruised away from the field at the 300-metre mark to win by 1.5l from Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson trained La Dorada (NZ) (Super Seth) with Allan Sharrock trained Almakeitgood (NZ) (Ardrossan) 0.2l further back in third. Second and third were game in defeat as they chased down Too Sweet, but the Roydon Bergerson-trained filly was too strong.

“There is nothing much better in racing than when you win a race for your son, the leading trainer in New Zealand,” Bergerson said. His son, Sam is the co-trainer of second placed La Dorada and shares in the ownership of Too Sweet.

“She won pretty well and is a good horse with a good brain on her. Michael took the initiative, as our plan was to drop in behind them, but she flew the gate and that was it. I think she is as good as Wolverine as she has a great turn of foot and probably has a better brain all around.” Bergerson trained Wolverine (NZ) (Tivaci) to win the 2022 G2 Eclipse S. and she went on to run second in the R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO at her next start. Last year’s winner Bellatrix Star (Star Witness) has improved at three this season, and in 2021, a very good mare by the name of Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) won this race.

“There is nothing much better in racing than when you win a race for your son (Sam Bergerson), the leading trainer in New Zealand.” - Roydon Bergerson

“Sam can take over now as we will leave her at Te Akau where she will go out on the water walker for a week and then bring her back here in three weeks.” The R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO is on January 25 at this same venue.

Purchased by Chris Rutten Bloodstock (BAFNZ) for NZ$50,000 from Phoenix Park’s draft at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, Too Sweet now has two wins and a second from three starts with earnings over NZ$164,000. Rutten won the R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO with Vespa (NZ) (Elusive City {USA}) in 2014.

This was the first win for Too Sweet in stakes company. Her sire Satono Aladdin (Jpn) sired Champion 2YO Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) in his first crop and the gelding won the R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO, but it is dual Group 1 winner Pennyweka (NZ) who is the best of Satono Aladdin’s eight stakes winners. Too Sweet is, to date, the only runner from the 42 live foals in Satono Aladdin’s current crop of juveniles.

Too Sweet is the first winner for unraced mare Sparkling Rose (NZ) (Bernardini {USA}) who has a yearling full sister to the Group 2 winner. Brighthill Farm will offer her as Lot 855 at the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale. Too Sweet is the first stakes winner for three generations, but her fourth dam is G1 Australasian Oaks winner Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), dam of Group 1 winner and sire Darci Brahma (NZ) and Group 3 winner and sire Burgundy (NZ).

Real Class now the Oaks favourite

Trainer Jenna Mahoney’s 3-year-old filly Real Class (NZ) (Vadamos {Fr}) has firmed into favouritism for the G1 NZ Oaks after a strong 0.75l win in the G2 Sir Patrick Hogan S. at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. She settled midfield for jockey Rory Hutchings, then came wide around the turn to gallop free of the field with fast-finishing Darryn and Briar Weatherley trained Bella Montagna (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) in second, and another 1l back to Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie trained Island Life (NZ) (Vadamos {Fr}) in third.

“It was a top ride from Rory. It is nice to have another handy one in the stable. She should love the 2400 metres, the further she goes the better she will get I think,” said Mahoney who races the filly with her partner Grant Dixon. Real Class was a private purchase from breeder Greg Tomlinson who bred her under his Nearco Stud brand.

“Because we had a lot to do with the family, we got offered her to carry on with and we decided to give her a go off Gordon Cunningham from Curraghmore. There has been a fair bit of interest from Australia, so we will see what happens.”

Real Class has now won two of her four starts and was third in the G2 Eight Carat Classic last start with earnings over NZ$190,000. She becomes the seventh stakes winner for Vadamos (Fr), whose best is Group 1 winner La Crique (NZ).

The fifth winner for Listed Sunline Vase winner Mill Duckie (NZ) (Magic Ring {Ire}) who placed in the G1 Thorndon Mile and G1 NZ Oaks, Real Class is a half-sister to stakes placed pair of High Class (NZ) (Shocking) and Righteous Mate (NZ) (Savabeel). Mahoney trained High Class who won twice and placed in the Listed Soliloquy S. Mill Duckie has an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Shocking and yearling filly by Reliable Man (GB). This is the family of G3 Wellington S. winner Steineck (NZ) (Fiesta Star).

Consistent Bourbon Empress wins the G2 Rich Hill Mile

Stephen Marsh trained 4-year-old mare Bourbon Empress (NZ) (Proisir) was rewarded for her consistency with a win in Ellerslie’s G2 Rich Hill Mile in her first crack at stakes class. Ridden by Matt Cartwright, Bourbon Empress won by 0.8l from Lance Noble trained Jaarfii (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}). It was another 1.2l back to Lance O'Sullivan & Andrew Scott trained Uderzo (NZ) (Vadamos {Fr}) in third, with the winner’s stablemate Provence (NZ) (Savabeel) in fourth.

“That was ultra satisfying as we were worried about her wide draw (12), although you then get Provence who was drawn on the fence (1) and didn’t get any luck. She was three wide with cover and when she came out you could see she was going to finish it off. That race (the Stella Artois Final) has been a great race for us as a lead-up and she has run really well today and will keep improving,” said Marsh.

“She loves it here at Ellerslie and there is a nice race for her here on Karaka Millions night, so she can have a wee breather and come back for that.” Marsh refers to the NZ$1 million Aotearoa Classic over 1600 metres for 4-year-olds on January 25.

Bourbon Empress has four wins and four placings from 10 starts with earnings over NZ$282,000. Champion New Zealand Sire Proisir now has 21 stakes winners, led by six Group 1 winners. Bourbon Empress was purchased by her trainer for NZ$80,000 at the 2022 NZB National Yearling Sale from Highline Thoroughbreds.

“She (Bourbon Empress) loves it here at Ellerslie and there is a nice race for her here on Karaka Millions night, so she can have a wee breather and come back for that.” - Stephen Marsh

One of five winners for Amiga Mia (Conatus), Bourbon Empress is a full sister to G2 Waikato Guineas-placed Pimlico (NZ) who now races in Hong Kong as Mr Escamillo. Amiga Mia has a 3-year-old filly Ali Nel (NZ) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}) who placed on debut at two, and Amiga Mia has missed for the last two seasons so has no yearling or foal.

Amiga Mia’s juvenile-winning dam Amistosa (Encosta De Lago) is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Saint Minerva (Galileo {Ire}), the dam of 2022 G3 Ken Russell S. winner Nettuno (I Am Invincible). This is the family of West Australian sire Universal Ruler.

Double for Cartwright with G3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup win

One race after winning the G2 Rich Hill Mile, jockey Matt Cartwright made it a group double aboard Bruce Wallace and Grant Cooksley trained 5-year-old gelding Son Of Sun (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) in the G3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Sitting mid-field for most of the 2400 metre journey, Son Of Sun was 5l off the leader at the turn, but accelerated past the field to win by 0.3l from front-runner Darryn and Briar Weatherley trained Arby (NZ) (Proisir) with Conor and Sarah Fahy trained Let Fly (NZ) (Raise The Flag {GB}) in third.

“He won well, he is a good stayer and hopefully he carries on with it. I think he is going to be a little bit better in six months. I know he is a 5-year-old, but he is a slow-maturing horse, and he has come along very well,” said Cooksley.

“He is nominated (for the Auckland Cup), but we will see what happens.” The G2 Auckland Cup over two miles is run on Champions Day in March. The win was the second in succession for the training partnership in this race, having won it last year with Trust In You (NZ) (Sweynesse) who went on to run in this year’s G1 Melbourne Cup.

Son Of Sun has won three of his past four starts and in total has six wins from 18 starts with earnings over NZ$330,000. Bred by Malway Farm, Son of Sun was purchased by Baiquing Sun out of Cambridge Stud’s 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale draft for NZ$65,000. He was taken to the NZB Ready To Run Sale, offered by Regal Farm, but passed in, and is raced by Sun under his New Zealand Gingkosun Investment Ltd banner.

He becomes stakes winner number 53 for Tavistock (NZ), and is one of six winners for unraced mare Smoothing (Tale Of The Cat {USA}) whose 4-year-old full sister to Son Of Sun is G3 Western Australian Oaks-placed Flash Of Dallas (NZ). Her last foal is an unraced 3-year-old filly by U S Navy Flag (USA). Smoothing’s dam Satin ‘n’ Silk (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) has produced two stakes placed winners and is a full sister to G3 Adrian Knox S. winner Sybeel (NZ) and Listed Morphettville Guineas winner Chamoix (NZ).

Miraval Rose wins Listed Kensington Stakes

Grunt (NZ) 4-year-old mare Miraval Rose won her second Listed race in the New Year’s Day Listed Kensington S. at Flemington for trainer Grahame Begg. Ridden by Craig Williams, she worked nicely into the lead and had to dig deep to hold on from the fast-finishing Charlotte Littlefield trained 4-year-old gelding Modown (Toronado {Ire}) to win by 0.35l with Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained 4-year-old mare Roll On High (Shamus Award) in third.

“We were very confident today, she took a huge amount of improvement from her first-up run into her second, and then again into her third. She was incredibly unlucky last start to sit three-deep, and she was still really tough to the line. She’s improved a heap off of that condition wise, we’ve been really happy with her,” said stable representative Rebecca Shanks. No plans were given for her next start.

Previously the winner of the Listed Twilight Glow S. last season at three - a win that was her last time in the winner’s circle - Miraval Rose took her career to three wins and four placings from 10 starts with earnings over $330,000. Sold by Yulong at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $250,000, she was purchased by her trainer and Rohan Hughes.

One of two stakes winners for Grunt, the other being Group 1 winner Veight, Miraval Rose is the second stakes winner for her dam Gypsy Tucker (Zabeel {NZ}), whose first foal is G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winner Gypsy Diamond (Not A Single Doubt) who placed in the G1 Queen of the Turf S. Gypsy Tucker was a winner over 1350 metres and is a half-sister to R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO-placed Silk Pins (NZ) (Pins) and to winner Darook Park (Darci Brahma {NZ}), the dam of G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon). Gypsy Tucker has a yearling colt by Lucky Vega (Ire).

Cup chances for Bagot quinella

Jockey Zac Spain sat just in behind the lead on Jason Warren trained 5-year-old gelding Grand Pierro (Pierro) in the Listed Bagot H. and dived through a gap to win by 0.75l from Ciaron Maher trained Interpretation (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) with Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald trained Mormona (Fr) (Morandi {Fr}) 2.5l away in third.

“I thought the horse had put the score on the board at Pakenham… he was exposed at the top of the straight and he was very game in defeat,” Warren said, referring to Grand Pierro’s last start second in the Listed Pakenham Cup.

“We came here with the plan to cover him up as long as we could and Zac executed that perfectly, we didn’t have a plan B. Halfway up the straight, I thought, ‘geez, he hasn’t even released the brakes yet’.

“We came here with the plan to cover him (Grand Pierro) up as long as we could and Zac (Spain) executed that perfectly, we didn’t have a plan B.” - Jason Warren

“Obviously it’s a prestigious race (the Bagot), and a qualifying race for the (Melbourne) Cup. We’d like to take him to Adelaide and see how well he runs the 3200 metres when we prepare him for it. I think we’ll be freshening him and then heading to Adelaide.”

Meanwhile, second placed Interpretation may head to New Zealand for the G3 Wellington Cup. This was the fourth career win for Grand Pierro, who won the Listed Geelong Classic as a 3-year-old and won the Ararat Gold Cup last spring. Last summer he ran third in both the G3 Hobart Cup and G3 Launceston Cup before failing in the G2 Adelaide Cup.

His 27 starts have earned him just over $510,000 and he was a $50,000 purchase by Grand Syndicates and John Price Bloodstock from Collingrove Stud at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. One of 38 stakes winners for Pierro, he is the only stakes winner among five winners for G3 WW Cockram S.-placed Le Societe (Anabaa {USA}) who is a half-sister to recent Group 1 winner Snazzytavi (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}). Their dam is Listed New Zealand St Leger winner Ritzy Lady (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).

Baker’s good spring continues with Iowna Merc

Trainer Bjorn Baker is on fire and his stable continued the streak with 5-year-old gelding Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert) taking out the Listed Canterbury Sprint on New Year’s Day. Ridden by Ashley Morgan, Iowna Merc stayed wider than the bunch to close quickly on the line and win by 0.31l from the hard-fighting James Cummings trained Pereille (Fastnet Rock) with Kris Lees trained Brudenell (Russian Revolution) in third. There were several hard luck stories in the field, so it might be one for punters to watch again and black book.

“It was a great win last start, and we thought he’d be up against it to maybe back it up here. The horse is going well,” said stable representative Luke Hilton.

“It’s an amazing association (with Darby Racing) and let’s hope it continues into 2025.”

Iowna Merc was coming off a last start win in Sydney and all up has six wins from nineteen starts with earnings over $660,000. Second in the Listed Bob Charley S. in April this year, this was Iowna Merc’s first stakes win and he becomes the fifth stakes winner for Winning Rupert who transferred to West Australia this year.

Bred by Scott Darby, who purchased Iowna Merc’s dam Mercedes (Snitzel) for $5,500 at the 2018 Inglis Digital May Sale, he sold her again in 2022 via Inglis Digital for $4,750 to Snow View Park and she unfortunately died in June 2023.

Mercedes has produced three winners including Iowna Merc’s 3-year-old full sister Iowna Benz, and Mercedes is a half-sister to Listed winner Divine Centuri (I Am Invincible).

Gallo Nero just the start of good things to come for Glenbeigh Farm

6 min read
Glenbeigh Farm co-director Denis Griffin is confident in the future of standout 2-year-old colt Gallo Nero (Wootton Bassett {GB}), predicting even greater success as the colt transitions to his 3-year-old season. As Glenbeigh’s Scone operation enters its third year, Griffin discusses plans for growth, success in 2025, and the farm’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft.

Glenbeigh Farm’s draft of six at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from January 7-13 is set to attract plenty of attention after they sold Gallo Nero (Wootton Bassett {GB}) for $370,000 to Hawkes Racing as Lot 523 at last year’s sale.

Gallo Nero’s 0.4l victory in the $160,000 Petaluma H. at Randwick on Saturday was the second for his sire, Wootton Bassett (GB), in Australia, after Pallaton saluted on debut in Sydney on December 21.

Wootton Bassett sired four Group 1-winning juveniles in the Northern Hemisphere in 2024, and he now has a R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic contender from his first Southern Hemisphere crop.

“He’ll be a champion stallion in years to come in Europe, because (Champion Irish Trainer) Aidan O’Brien has heaps by him,” Griffin told The Thoroughbred Report.

“Coolmore have also supported him heavily with good Galileo mares.”

Wootton Bassett currently stands at Coolmore Australia for a stud fee of $192,500 (inc GST).

Griffin was instantly impressed with Gallo Nero’s attitude on farm, adding the way he relaxed before displaying an impressive turn of foot on the rail inside the final furlong over 1100 metres did not come as a huge surprise on Saturday.

“He was a beautiful, kind, laidback horse. A good mover and a happy horse,” Griffin said.

“He was no problem. You could take him anywhere.

“I think he’ll actually be a better 3-year-old. He was quite a big horse, so whatever he’s showing now is just ability.”

“I think he’ll (Gallo Nero) actually be a better 3-year-old. He was quite a big horse, so whatever he’s showing now is just ability.” - Denis Griffin

Gallo Nero is now second in the line of betting at $6 to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, in what will be his second start for Michael, John and Wayne Hawkes, on January 11.

“If he goes there, he’ll be (competitive). John Hawkes is a brilliant trainer,” Griffin said.

“He wouldn’t send him if he didn’t think he was a big chance. So, fingers crossed.”

Bred by Kambula Stud and Shane Doyle, Gallo Nero was the first foal of Chianti, a metropolitan-winning daughter of I Am Invincible from the South African Group 3 winner Sweet Sanette (SAf) (Jallad {USA}).

“She (Chianti) is a lovely I Am Invincible mare; she’s a beautiful mare,” Griffin said.

“And she has an Anamoe filly foal which will probably be coming here next year.

“She’s really nice as well. She was the first foal by Anamoe.

“He (Gallo Nero) was bred by Kambula Stud. They send up horses for us to prepare for the sales, and we sell for them.”

Quality over quantity for Glenbeigh Farm at the Magic Millions Sales

Despite having to reduce his 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft down to six from 11, Griffin is delighted with the quality he has among that number.

“We’ll have five for Book 1, and one for Book 2,” he said.

“There were just a few little injuries, so there was no point bringing them if they’re not right.

“We’re pretty excited. It’s always a good time of the year. The first sale is always exciting.”

Griffin highlighted Lot 267 and Lot 291 as standout offerings likely to draw significant interest from buyers. Lot 267 is a colt by Trapeze Artist out of the juvenile winner in Great Britain Chrisellaine (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). Meanwhile, Lot 291 is a filly by The Autumn Sun out of Courtesan (NZ) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), a half-sister to two-time Group 1-winning stallion Monaco Consul (NZ).

“Our Trapeze Artist colt is a lovely strong, mature 2-year-old,” Griffin said.

“He looks ready to race. He’s good-looking with a lot of presence about him. He’s a very nice horse.

“(I like) the filly by The Autumn Sun out of Courtesan. The Autumn Sun has really nice fillies – they’ve been winning Oaks and staying races.

“She looks like a real Oaks/Guineas filly. She looks like she’s bred for it.”

Griffin added he was also excited about Lot 767, a filly by Pinatubo (Ire) from the winning High Chapparal (Ire) mare Pattini, who is a half-sister to Woodside Park Stud stallion Vancouver.

“We’ve got a really well-bred Pinatubo filly. Her mum is a half-sister to Vancouver,” he said.

“Vancouver won the Golden Slipper for Gai Waterhouse a couple of years ago, so that’s a good pedigree one.”

Farm goes from strength to strength in short period of time

Griffin only took the keys to Glenbeigh Farm with business and life partner Kerry Stephens in early 2022.

The property had formerly been run by Colleen Buchanan for 20-odd years under the Sefton Park Thoroughbreds banner. Stephens and Griffin renamed the property Glenbeigh Farm in a nod to Griffin’s hometown of Glenbeigh, in the Iveragh Peninsula in Ireland’s County Kerry.

Denis Griffin and Kerry Stephens

Stephens and Griffin received an early morale and financial boost when Skipjack (Rubick) was bought for $200,000 by Dalziel Bloodstock/Moody Racing from Glenbeigh Farm as Lot 674 at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Glenbeigh Farm purchased the now 3-year-old gelding – with one win from four starts – for just $26,000 from Noorilim Park at the 2022 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

“Definitely (that sale was good for our brand). He was a pinhook as well. We only paid $26,000 for him as a foal,” Griffin said. “So it was a real good touch.”

Upon their purchase of Glenbeigh Farm, Griffin and Stephens immediately went about upgrading it to their liking.

Among their work, they re-seeded 70 per cent of the farm, installed a 100,000-litre water tank, and put in a vet crush and horse walker.

“We’re just trying to do everything by the book. You have to keep everything right,” Griffin said. “I suppose you need good clients, that’s the first thing. And the rest follows.”

Griffin said Glenbeigh Farm held high hopes for strong financial returns from their draft of six at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“I think we should go okay. It’s hard to know until they start parading whether people will like them or not,” he said.

“You might think you have a lovely horse, but a lot of people won’t like it. I guess that’s their personal opinion, isn’t it?

“You might have a good year this year and a bad year next year. That’s just the way it is.”

Rapid Reflections with Kelly Van Dyk

3 min read

In today's instalment of 2024/2025 Rapid Reflections, we feature a quickfire round with Kelly Van Dyk, Director at Prima Park.

Favourite moment - racing, sales or breeding related - for 2024?

KVD: So many great moments for 2024! It’s been a great year. Training my first winner was definitely a highlight of my career to date. Selling our Exceed And Excel (ex Allez Bien) colt for $600,000 at the Inglis Ready2Race sale was definitely up there as well!

Kelly Van Dyk | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

KVD: One door shuts and another door opens. Every time I’ve ever been worried about something or something hasn’t gone my way something better has been waiting in the wings.

Which first-season sires progeny are you most excited to see hit the track?

KVD: Hello Youmzain. We have a homebred filly that we really like and are getting ready to hopefully be at the races early next year.

Hello Youmzain (Fr) | Standing at Cambridge Stud

Which sire do you consider a value sire? Fee <$50k and not a first-season sire.

KVD: Ardrossan. We have bred a cracking colt by him this year. He can get you results in the sale ring and looks to have a promising 2-year-old heading towards the Karaka Millions in Toretto.

Which yearling purchase are you most excited about?

KVD: We purchased a Nicconi colt from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in 2023 and subsequently sold him at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run sale. He’s called Copartner Benny and has looked very impressive in his trials to date. Keep an eye out for him when he starts in Hong Kong!

If you could be someone else in the industry for a day. Who would it be?

KVD: Ciaron Maher - to be surrounded by his incredible operation and facilities and learn from everyone and everything!

Name an emerging human talent in the industry, and say why?

KVD: Dom Sutton, looks to be a talented young trainer on the rise!

Dom Sutton

If you could change one thing about the perception of horse racing, what would it be?

KVD: That it is cruel. Would love everyone to be able to see how loved and cared for all the horses in our care are.

What’s been the most challenging moment in your career, and how did it shape you?

KVD: So many challenges! This industry certainly keeps your feet on the ground and humbles you.

What’s the one question you wish people would ask you but never do?

KVD: Anything and everything! You only learn by asking questions. Everyone’s background in the industry is unique. If you ask the questions you never know where it might lead or what you might learn.

Harron and TFI join forces

James Harron Bloodstock and Tony Fung Investments will join forces for the 2025 yearling sales. This landmark collaboration will see Tony Fung Investments participating in acquisitions for both the JHB Colt Partnership and the JHB/Michael Freedman Filly Partnership.

“As the market continues to evolve, so must we,” said James Harron in a press release. “Historically, we’ve been fierce competitors in the sales ring with Tony and his team. However, given our shared focus on acquiring and developing elite horses to maximize on-sale value and build enduring stallion equity for our partners, this partnership is a natural next step. I have tremendous respect for the achievements of Tony and his team, and believe this alliance represents a great opportunity for all involved.”

James Harron | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

They have previously purchased G1 Golden Slipper winners Capitalist and Farnan, dual Group 1 winner King’s Legacy, as well as group winning stallions Prague and Anders.

"When I first landed in Australia, I asked my team who was the competitor we ought both fear, and look to for inspiration, and my team unequivocally said the team at James Harron Bloodstock," said John Fung, Tony Fung’s son. "Over the November sales in Kentucky, our teams began developing the idea to combine our energies and maximize value for the foreseeable future. Today, I am thrilled that we have found our way to this exciting collaboration. I look forward to learning from James and his team over the next few years, and to all the opportunities which the upcoming sales present. I truly think that my family’s future in this industry has been enhanced by this partnership.”

Willydoit now favourite for NZ Derby

Willydoit (NZ) (Tarzino) firmed up his G1 New Zealand Derby favourite’s tag when he made it back-to-back wins at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “It is a pretty big statement. It looks like he is a well above average horse,” co-trainer Shaun Clotworthy, who trains in partnership with his wife Emma, told Loveracing.nz.

“He has got a nice turn of foot and he will get a Derby distance. He is a pretty relaxed individual and he doesn’t take too much out of himself. We will just see how the horse pulls up, but that (Guineas path) looks the logical programme.”

Corstens/Larkin-trained duo for Gold Coast

Nathan Bennett syndicated and Corstens/Larkin-trained duo of Stay Humble (Deep Field) and Stay Silent (Deep Field) will run at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Stay Humble runs in the $250,000 Sunlight Consolation and Stay Silent in the $250,000 Magic Millions Maiden. “We’ve got Stay Humble and Stay Silent racing this coming Saturday and the door is open for them to go to the Guineas the following week if they run well,” Bennett told racing.com.

Snitzanova (Snitzel) is already committed to the Magic Millions Guineas. “She hasn’t taken a backwards step,” Bennett said of the Ciaron Maher-trained filly. “She’s a pretty tough filly that one.”

Deagon trainer Patrick Busuttin hopes to celebrate a win in the New Years Cup with Likeabeel (Foxwedge) at Kilcoy on Thursday with his daughter Julie. “Julie’s ridden 14 winners so far and she’s only been riding for five months,” Busuttin told racingqueensland.com.au.

“She’s 18 and has just finished her final year at school and was awarded the student of the year from all the school-based apprentices. There were 60 school-based apprentices and her studies counted to her grades at the end of the year. We didn’t know she was getting the award and it was a great plug for racing.”

“He’s stepping up to 1500 metres which suits him a lot better and we’re hoping the predicted rain comes,” Busuttin said of Likeabeel.

Holymanz ready for second Coastal Classic

Ciaron Maher is confident that Holymanz (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) can make it back-to-back wins in the Coastal Classic this Saturday at Geelong. “He’s been racing very consistently and competitively without winning,” assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told racing.com.

The stable also has Night Endeavor (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) in the race. “Night Endeavor is second up, he was good first up, albeit on a wrong track and a trip that wasn’t long enough. Of the two, you’re leaning towards Holymanz, it’s going to be a good race for him.”

Full sister to Atishu wins at Flemington

Dream All Day (NZ) (Savabeel) looks exciting after the full sister to Group 1 winner Atishu (NZ) won at Flemington on Wednesday. “We have done a speed gene DNA test on her, and she came up a TT, which is what makes her exciting in my opinion,” co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr said.

“It means she’s bred to get 2000 and 2400 metres, so with that turn of foot and class, she might be a nice addition to the stable. She has a fantastic pedigree as she’s a full sister to Atishu and the dam has left another stakes winner (Mazzolino), so she’s got a really good record of producing stakes-class fillies. We’d love to add to that with this girl. We are big buyers of New Zealand horses in general, but we buy a lot of horses from Waikato, so we’re very fortunate they have us this nice filly to train.”

Her dam, Posy (NZ) (No Excuse Needed {GB}), hasn’t had a foal since Dream All Day.

Riordan wins Flemington opener

Liam Riordan made the best possible start to 2025 at Flemington on New Year’s Day, winning the first Victorian metro race of the year on Simon Zahra’s promising 3-year-old filly Xarpo (The Autumn Sun). “It’s really good, I think I’ve been riding pretty well lately, and it’s all about opportunities,” Riordan told racing.com.

“I’m going to try and ride in the city every meeting now if the opportunities present, rather than just going to the country to chase better rides. Being a lightweight jockey obviously helps me to capitalise on that, and so does being based at Flemington.”

Hobart Cup for Flemington winner

Patrick and Michelle Payne trained 4-year-old mare Zambezi Khan (NZ) (Mongolian Khan {NZ}) could head to Tasmania for the Hobart and Launceston Cups after a good win at Flemington on Wednesday. “We’ve got a couple to head down there and she might join them,” Michelle Payne told racing.com.

Around the Nation: Wednesday’s highlights

New Year’s Day saw 14 meetings across Australia. At Gundagai, 3-year-old filly Royal Detective (Royal Symphony) won on debut. At Mornington, 3-year-old gelding Sponge Bob (Flying Artie) won on debut, while at the same meeting 3-year-old filly Miss Artie (Tassort) made it two wins in succession. At Murray Bridge, 3-year-old gelding Streetcar Fury (Exceedance) won on debut.

Looking Ahead - January 2

5 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across New Zealand and Australia on Thursday. These include Ocean Park (NZ) and Deep Field debutants at Tauranga and a promising Shamus Award filly makes her debut at Yarra Valley.

Tauranga, Race 3, 12.45pm AEDT (2.45pm local), Epic Journeys 3YO Mdn., $18,500, 1400m

Oceana Dream (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Ocean Park {NZ} x Clevedon Bay {Redoute’s Choice})

Oceana Dream (NZ), a son of Waikato Stud’s proven stallion Ocean Park will make his debut at Tauranga over 1400 metres at Tauranga for Cambridge trainers Rogers James and Robert Wellwood. He looked talented when winning at the Pukekohe trials on December 17 when defeating First Tycoon (Written Tycoon) by 1.5l over 1100 metres.

This promising gelding is the third live foal from the Redoute’s Choice mare Clevedon Bay, who was a two-time winner on the track. She has started her broodmare career well leaving the six-time winner Victory Bay (NZ) (So You Think {NZ}) and Quadri (NZ) (Savabeel) who has won twice in her career so far.

Oceana Dream comes from an outstanding extended family, some of the Group winners include Calveen (NZ) (Canny Lad), Striker (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy {USA}), Kosi Bay (NZ) (Spinning World {USA}), Fireworks (Snitzel), First Impressions (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), Okahu Bay (Flying Spur), Pareanui Bay (NZ) (Lonhro), Ektifaa (More Than Ready {USA}) and Thalassophile (Not A Single Doubt).

Clevedon Bay’s further progeny include a 2-year-old filly by Ocean Park, a yearling filly by Circus Maximus (Ire) and she was due to foal to Profondo in November last spring.

Tauranga, Race 7, 12.45pm AEDT (2.45pm local), Epic Journeys 3YO Mdn., $18,500, 1400m

Happy Field, 4-year-old gelding (Deep Field x Ra Ra Epic {Drumbeats})

Tauranga’s Thursday meeting will serve as the venue for the debut of the promising gelding Happy Field, a well-bred 4-year-old son of Deep Field from the Debbie Sweeney stable at Te Awamutu. He has looked talented as shown by winning his last two trials impressively at Taupo and Waipa respectively.

Happy Field is the second live foal out of Ra Ra Epic (Drumbeats). She was a three-time winner up to 1300 metres on the track.

Ra Ra Epic has some outstanding blood within her pedigree, she is a full sister to Bergarac (Drumbeats) who was a 10-time winner including in the Listed Ipswich Cup and the Listed Bernborough H. She is also a three-quarter-sister to the very promising Waikato Stud stallion Ardrossan who was a Group 3 winning sprinter and a half-sister to the outstanding Incentivise (Shamus Award) who was a three-time Group 1 winner with his standout wins being in the G1 Caulfield Cup, G1 Makybe Diva S., and the G1 Turnbull S., and Cheyenne Warrior (Not A single Doubt) who was a Listed winner in Tasmania.

Further back in the pedigree are the talented stakes-winners Prince Of Boom (Spirit Of Boom), Diamondsondinside (Iglesia), Heaven’s Deal (Spirit Of Boom), Express Air (Piccolo {GB}), Simply Fly (Spirit Of Boom) and Keshi Boom (Spirit Of Boom).

Ra Ra Epic since producing Happy Field has left a 3-year-old colt named Flamboyant Lad (Yes Yes Yes) a 2-year-old filly named First Fifteen (I Am Invincible) and a yearling colt by Pierro who heads to the 2025 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale in the draft of Merricks Station as Lot 400.

Happy Field was originally a $200,000 purchase by Riversley Park/Michael Guerin from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He was then a successful pinhook when selling from the Riversley Park Ltd draft for NZ$460,000 to Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) from the 2022 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale.

Bet365 Yarra Valley, Race 3, 2.30pm AEDT, De Bortoli 3YO Mdn Plate, $37,500, 1000m

McKeyla, 3-year-old filly (Shamus Award x Cherief’s Choice {Redoute’s Choice})

Yarra Valley’s Thursday meeting will serve as the venue for second start for McKeyla, a daughter of Shamus Award from the Robbie Griffiths stable at Cranbourne. She ran a lovely third at big odds on the Pakenham Synthetic in July last year behind the talented Blue Stratum (Blue Point {Ire}).

McKeyla is the second foal out of Cherief’s Choice (Redoute’s Choice) who showed some talent on the track winning twice at 1000 metres. She has already left the smart two-time winning Supido gelding Supido’s Choice.

Shamus Award | Standing at Rosemont Stud

She holds a very interesting pedigree-pattern having a 3 x 2 cross of the legendary Redoute’s Choice directly through his sire Shamus Award being a grandson of Redoute's Choice and his broodmare sire being by Redoute’s Choice directly.

The family page is a bit quiet in terms of having Group performers close in the page but further down in the page there are some classy performers including the Group 1 winner Alverta (Flying Spur), Aerobatics (Exceed And Excel) who was successful at Group 3 level and Revolte (French Debuty {USA}) who was a very good Listed winner in Singapore.

Cherief’s Choice since producing McKeyla, has left a 2-year-old colt by Widden Stud’s Doubtland and was due to foal to Pride Of Dubai in September last spring.

Looking Back

Cold Brew (Lonhro) ran a solid race for second, it was an improvers run and he looks close to a win

Blanc De Noir (Capitalist) was scratched from her race, she will keep for another day.

Qatars Choice (I Am Invincible) won very impressively, she looks a very progressive filly and has a big future.
