New Zealand vendors are going well out of their way to meet the thoroughbred market. A trio of Waikato nurseries will be chasing a slice of the Sydney action with drafts at the Ready2Race Sale at Riverside on Monday, October 15.
Cambridge operations Kiltannon Stables, Lyndhurst Farm and Ohukia Lodge will all be represented and for the former, it’s a case of taking the mountain to Muhammed. “The reason we’re going over there is that the prize-money for the 3-year-old staying races is so good and we think it’s a great sale to target,” Mark Forbes said. “We’re going to take five rather than the Australian buyers coming to see us.

Among them is Lot 63, a gelding by Per Incanto (USA) (Street Cry {IRE}) out of Explosive Dancer (NZ) {San Luis), who produced last season’s G1 New Zealand Derby winner Vin De Dance (NZ) (Roc de Cambes {NZ}). “He’s a really smart type and the Savabeel gelding out of I Do looks a really precocious sort,” Forbes said. His dam won 15 races, including the G1 Makfi Challenge Stakes and he will go through the ring as Lot 91.

Ideal Derby type
“The Tavistock colt looks a perfect Derby horse to me,” Forbes said. As Lot 74, he is a son of Glamorous Girl (NZ) (Thorn Park), a mare who won the G3 Desert Gold Stakes. Kiltannon will also be offering a colt, Lot 115 by Coats Choice (Redoute’s Choice) from the family of the multiple North American Group 1 winner Bold ‘N Determined (USA) (Bold and Brave {USA}) and a Sacred Falls (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) filly, Lot 110, out of the stakes winner Magic Briar (Thorn Park).
Mark and Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm have four youngsters booked for the auction. “We had a couple of clients who were keen to sell there and we agreed,” Mark Treweek said. “The competition in New Zealand is very tough and we’re always keen for a challenge.

“We tried before and it didn’t work that well, but we’re doing smaller drafts now and we’ll be selling, hopefully, at the top of the market. We’re just trying to make the most out of what we’ve got.”
Brazen Beau represented
Included in their draft is Lot 128, a colt by first season sire Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and Pintle (Pivotal {GB}) who boasts a Group 1 European background. He was purchased at the Melbourne Weanling Sale and another Melbourne-sourced colt is by Pierro (Lonhro) from the family of the multiple Group 1 winner Sea Siren (Fastnet Rock). He will sold as Lot 143.

A Dawn Approach (IRE) (New Approach {IRE}) colt, Lot 23, is a son of Balmarossa (Testa Rossa) whose third dam is the G1 Queen Elizabeth Randwick S., winner Dinky Flyer (NZ) (Balmerino {NZ}). Completing Lyndhurst’s line-up is Lot 122, a Per Incanto colt from Our Prized Rose (Prized {USA}). He is a half-brother to the Group 3 winner Hammer Down (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and the Group 1 family of Plume (NZ) (Crested Wave {USA}) and Maco’Reilly (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}).
Ohukia Lodge will be selling for the first time in Australia, but it won’t be a new experience for principal Jamie Beatson. “I’ve taken over a few before when I was with my cousin Sam under Beatson Stables, but this will be the first time in my own right,” he said. “We’re taking four over and it might be a little bit of trial and error, but they are all nice, athletic types and hopefully they will meet the demand.”

First up from Ohukia, who sold the G1 New Zealand Derby winner Vin De Dance (NZ) (Roc de Cambes {NZ}) at the Ready to Run Sale at Karaka, is Lot 45. He is a gelding by Savabeel (AUS) (Zabeel {NZ}) and a grandson of the triple Group 1 winner Daffodil (NZ) (No Excuse Needed {GB}).

“He’s a good, strong horse and an early type while the Jakkalberry has got a bit of quality about him,” Beatson said. He is Lot 60 and is out of Emma Savanna (NZ) (Savabeel) from the family of the G1 Spring Champion S., winner Kinjite (NZ) (Centaine).
Ohukia’s Tavistock (NZ) (Montjeu {IRE}) colt, Lot 98, is a half-brother to two winners with their dam La Bella (NZ) (Ekraar {USA}). “He’s a really athletic sort and the Dissident is a cracking colt,” Beatson said. Lot 172 is out of Tellora (Elusive Quality {USA}), who has left two winners.
