The 3-year-old made a major impact during a relatively brief career and a deal has been completed for him to begin the next phase of his career at the Hunter Valley farm.
Trained by Grahame Begg for his father Neville, who bred the chestnut, and family, Written By won six of his 11 starts including the G1 Blue Diamond S. and more than $1.7 million.
“Widden has enjoyed unrivalled success in recent years launching the careers of successful stallions such as Sebring, Northern Meteor, Stratum, Nicconi, Star Witness and Zoustar. They have all been wonderfully successful sires,” stud principal Antony Thompson said.

“We firmly believe this horse has all the attributes to add to our current sires’ success and we thank Neville and the Begg family for entrusting us to fulfil his next career as a stallion. They have been an absolute pleasure to deal with.
“Not since Pierro in 2013 has an Australian Group I winning 2-year-old retired to stud that is completely free of Danehill blood. We feel Written By presents as a beautiful outcross to the many Danehill/Danzig line mares in this country.”

Written By was unbeaten in his first four starts before he was sent to Sydney where he won the G3 Pago Pago S. before he finished fourth in the G1 Golden Slipper S. He was the first colt home behind Estijaab (Snitzel), Oohood (I Am Invincible) and Sunlight (Zoustar).
He won a further two races this season, including the G3 Blue Sapphire S. and was a gallant fourth in the G1 Coolmore Stud S.

Written By is a son of Yau Chin (Tobougg {Fr}), who has a 100 per cent record at stud with all four of her foals to race having been successful. She is also from the family of the G1 Australian Guineas and Group 1 producing sire Pins (Snippets).
“Written By’s dam is a resident at Widden so there is some nice synergy there,” Widden Marketing and Stallions’ Nominations Manager Ryan McEvoy said.
“Notwithstanding his race track performances, he’s got the make up to be an influential stallion.” – Ryan McEvoy.
“He profiles similarly to the young colts that we’ve had great success with. Notwithstanding his race track performances, his overall make up allows him to be an influential stallion in this jurisdiction.
“Now he’s going to go on and fulfil that next chapter of his career. For decades, there has been a respectful relationship between Neville Begg and his family with Widden.
“This is a lightning quick, precocious son of Written Tycoon with an awesome physique so we feel he’s going to suit our market particularly well.

Written By will stand his first season at a fee of $24,750 including GST alongside another 2019 newcomer, the four-time Group 1 winner and Champion 3-year-old colt Trapeze Artist (Snitzel).
“This year certainly has some resemblance to 10 years ago when the Australian Champion 2-year-old and Champion 3-year-old retired to Widden being Sebring and Northern Meteor,” McEvoy said.
“Like those two Champion sires, Written By and Trapeze Artist will be assured every possible chance given the incredible response we have received already. It’s certainly an exciting period for the farm.”
