Big weekend for Newgate Farm as Menari rejoins lineup

7 min read
Hot on the heels of a stakes win with imported mare Con Te Partiro at Scone, Newgate has announced Menari will be joining the stallion roster again after re-injuring his suspensory.

Menari, the Group 2 winning son of Snitzel, has had his racetrack comeback ended by a recurrence of a suspensory injury, and will return to Newgate for stud duties this season.

“I’m devastated that Menari has gone amiss, as I honestly feel he could have won The Everest. He is one of the most talented horses I have ever had anything to do with. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…he is just something different this horse,” trainer Gerald Ryan said.

Menari stood his first season at Newgate last year but fertility issues saw him set for a return to the track before this latest setback.

Menari will rejoin the Newgate stallion roster

“Menari obviously has machine-like talent, is by a Champion sire and hails from the famous Corumbene Stud pedigree,” Newgate's Henry Field said.

“We will be doing everything under the sun to manage Menari’s fertility in 2019 and at a fee of $15,000 + GST he represents phenomenal value.”

Menari will be limited to very few outside bookings.

Milestone Scone win credited to Adrian Bott

A day earlier, Newgate enjoyed a first win in their new black and red silks with imported Scat Daddy (USA) mare Con Te Partiro (USA) in Saturday's G3 Arrowfield Dark Jewel Classic at Scone. The win was significant on a number of fronts, with Field attributing the success to the hard work of co-trainer Adrian Bott.

Con Te Partiro was one of two daughters of Scat Daddy which Newgate bought out of last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale, paying US$575,000 for the Saratoga and Royal Ascot stakes winner.

Con Te Partiro winning Saturday's G3 Arrowfield Dark Jewel Classic

"She was a beautiful mare and she had high class Royal Ascot and 2-year old form and being by Scat Daddy, being beautiful and having that form, we really thought she was appealing for us to buy as a broodmare for Australia," Field told TDN AusNZ.

"Myself, Gavin Murphy and Tom Ryan of SF Bloodstock work very really hard at these November sales at Kentucky to source these high-quality mares for Australia."

"We bought her specifically to breed to Russian Revolution this season and after purchasing her I said to Gai (Waterhouse) and Adrian, have a shot with her and see how we go. If she doesn’t go well, you can send her back to the farm," he said.

"We bought her specifically to breed to Russian Revolution this season." - Henry Field

Bott took Con Te Partiro, who won the Listed Sandringham S. at Royal Ascot when trained by Wesley Ward, on as a project, and with the mare being notoriously quirky, it wasn't an easy task.

"She is quirksome," Waterhouse said after Saturday's narrow win. "Before the race I said she'll either blow her brain in the mounting enclosure or she'll win the race."

"But she stood quietly. Full credit to the girls and boys who looked after her and kept her quiet."

Field said Bott's work had been instrumental in getting the 5-year-old back to her best at her first Australian run, having had two trials in the lead-in.

Winning connections of Con Te Partiro

"To be fair, particularly to Adrian Bott, he worked incredibly hard on the mare and nailed her. To have her as a stakes winner on three continents is an achievement probably never done before by any mare," he said.

"When she first arrived and went to Gai and Adrian's, Gai called me and said she'll be a bit of work, she was a very hard puller. They have put a lot of effort in her to get her to relax. She's a seriously valuable mare now, having put in a Group victory in a high-class mares race yesterday at Scone."

Fighting qualities to the fore

It was an impressive win in that she was forced to fight very hard. She settled just off the pace but when Savatiano (Streey Cry {Ire}) kicked clear and Con Te Partiro was tightened for room at the 300m between another Godolphin mare Organza (Street Cry {Ire}) and Into The Abyss (Foxwedge), she looked to be without luck.

But Sam Clipperton, who had also won the featured Listed Scone Cup on the first day of the two-day carnival, lifted her over the final 200m and she surged late to nab Savatiano and secure a first win in the new black and red Newgate colours.

"That's the first winner for the new set of colours that we registered. We have never had colours before and we figured we might as well get a set made up. We are certainly happy that they seem to be lucky," Field said.

Daddy's first winner

It was also historic in that she became the first Australian winner by the legendary Scat Daddy, who has only had a handful of runners here.

The progeny of Scat Daddy has been particularly sought after by Australian breeders in recent years and Coolmore now standing four of his sons, Justify (USA), Caravaggio (USA), No Nay Never (USA) and Mendelssohn (USA), while Swettenham Stud is standing Sioux Nation (USA).

Newgate has been building up its Scat Daddy broodmares, with Con Te Partiro and Paulita (USA) both secured at the November Sale.

Scat Daddy, sire of Con Te Partiro

"We've got four Scat Daddy mares on the farm. We have been collecting them for the past few years. I think she's the jewel in the crown," he said.

"We've got four Scat Daddy mares on the farm. We have been collecting them for the past few years. I think she's the jewel in the crown," - Henry Field

"There's a filly called Paulita, she's with Ciaron Maher, another Scat Daddy filly and she should have her first start in the next few weeks."

Paulita is also a stakes winner in the USA and cost US$325,000 at the same sale.

Insta Erma (USA) (Pioneer of The Nile (USA), who has had a couple of starts in the Newgate colours for Chris Waller in Melbourne, was bought for US$425,000 at the Keeneland November Sale.

"We bought three fillies to put in training, two are by Scat Daddy," Field said. "The reality is, we didn't have any ambition with them. We thought that rather than eating grass on the farm, we'd give them every opportunity to show what they can do on the track.

Future in trainers' hands

Con Te Partiro, who is out of the stakes-placed mare Temple Street (Street Cry {Ire}) and is a half-sister to stakes-winner in Donworth (USA) (Tiznow {USA}) holds a nomination for both the G1 Kingsford Smith Cup and the G1 Stradbroke Hcp in the coming weeks but Field said he would be entirely guided by the opinion of her trainers.

"While she is going well, we will keep her going. Adrian Bott has put a huge amount of work into this mare and he is really focused hard to get the best out of her, and if he's not happy with her anymore, we’ll send her home, but until then, himself and Gai can keep her going," he said.

Smart stakes streak a boost for Twin Hills

5 min read
A rush of three new stakes winners in the space of two days for Smart Missile couldn’t have come at a better time for Twin Hills Stud, who are planning the stallion's second season at its Cootamundra-based farm.

Smart Missile enjoyed a fantastic weekend with front-running 5-year-old Special Missile winning Friday's Listed Scone Cup before 3-year-old filly Ready To Prophet claimed the Listed Denise's Joy S. at the same venue 24 hours later. Promising 2-year-old Missile Mantra then made it two wins from as many starts with a barnstorming victory in the Listed Redoute's Choice S. at Caulfield.

That takes the stallion's total for 2018-19 up to eight stakes winners, including his first Group 1 - Maid Of Heaven in the Spring Champion S, the season after he transferred to Twin Hills following six seasons at Arrowfield.

Off the back of that success and a record book of mares of 222 in his first season at his new home, Twin Hills recently announced his fee would move back to $22,000 (inc GST) having been $13,200 in his first year.

"He's having a great season and his 3-year-old crop in particular is top class. He's had five stakes winning 3-year-olds and that's the same as Zoustar and I Am Invincible at the top of all stallions in Australia. It's been terrific," Twin Hills owner Olly Tait told TDN AusNZ.

It is the spread of winners which pleases Tait, with Friday and Saturday's winners from three different crops over 1100m, 1200m and 1600m.

"He's had a 3-year-old stakes winner, a 2-year-old stakes winner and a Scone Cup winner in two days, so it's been really good," - Olly Tait

"He's had a 3-year-old stakes winner, a 2-year-old stakes winner and a Scone Cup winner in two days, so it's been really good," Tait said.

"He is very versatile, and his horses win over all distances and at all ages. He's everything you want in a stallion."

"I think his horses are very tough and they have got ability and speed. That's what you need over whatever distance. Since Day 1, they are good looking horses, they sell well."

"I think his horses are very tough and they have got ability and speed. That's what you need over whatever distance. Since Day 1, they are good looking horses, they sell well." - Olly Tait

Smart Missile was the leading first-season sire in Australia in 2015-16, with seven winners in his first year. But Tait feels that while he can produce a good 2-year-old, with the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Missile Mantra his sixth juvenile stakes winner, trainers are learning the value of taking their time with his progeny.

Smart Missile

"He was the leading first-season sire in his first crop which shows that he can get some talent into his 2-year-olds and even as time has gone on, people have been a bit more patient with his progeny," he said.

"That filly of the Snowdens' only had her first start in April of her 2-year-old year. Now she's a stakes winner at her second start. She was given a little more time than a lot of 2-year olds do and they are being rewarded for that."

Big future for Snowdens' filly

Missile Mantra looks another great buy for Triple Crown Syndications, who paid $30,000 for her at the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale. She is out of Wecansay Mak (Starcraft {NZ}), the full sister to Group 1 winner We Can Say It Now.

She looks a 2-year-old of some promise having won on her debut at Ballarat last month.

"She's a very nice horse," jockey Beau Mertens said. "It's only early days with her now. She did a lot more right than she did at Ballarat in travelling-wise and going a bit straighter."

"She's a filly going places. I really like her. She's only going to improve on herself and next prep, she's going to be a lovely, lovely horse."

"She's a filly going places. I really like her. She's only going to improve on herself and next prep, she's going to be a lovely, lovely horse." - Beau Mertens

Tait agreed that the future looks bright and it was fitting success given the way both Snowden and Triple Crown have supported the stallion.

"She's an exciting prospect. She's two from two now and she is in very good hands with Peter Snowden. The way she has won her first two races, you’d suggest she'd may get over a bit more ground," Tait said.

"Even her maiden, it was a good, class field and going to town and winning a Listed race, you’d suggest it won’t be the last we hear of her."

Missile Mantra as a yearling

"It's great for the stallion and we are very happy for Triple Crown, who have been great supporters of Smart Missile as well as Peter and Paul as trainers."

That run of results has given Tait every confidence that Smart Missile will get a similar level of support in season two at Twin Hills.

Success augurs well for Denman

As well as Odyssey Moon, Smart Missile will stand alongside Denman, for the first time this season, who is a horse who brings a similar profile having spent nine seasons at Darley.

"Both of them have similar characteristics. Both of them have covered large numbers of good mares leading up to moving to us. We are giving them a different opportunity than they were getting at the Hunter Valley, so that has been to their advantage," Tait said.

"They are both high quality racehorses who covered large numbers of good mares. Denman's got a lot of runners out there for him out of quality mares. He's had three stakes winners from his 3-year-old crop. There is much more to look forward to with him."

Inglis Scone Yearling Sale Review

5 min read
Sunday's Inglis Scone Yearling Sale bucked the trend of the rest of the yearling sales season, with the top-end weaker than previous years but the median and clearance rate both increasing.

At A Glance

>> Average was only slightly down on 2018, from $16,213 to $15,815

>> Median was slightly higher at $12,000 compared to $10,000 for last year

>> The sale continued its reputation for high clearance with 89% of lots sold, up from 87% last year

>> The total sales of $2,657,000 was just short of last year's number , with no six-figure lot at the sale for the first time in four years

>> Recently relocated Shamus Award, who will now stand at Rosemont Stud in Victoria, was the leading stallion on aggregate with $277,000 in total sales

>> Newgate's Wandjina proved the most popular sire on the day with all 16 of his lots selling

Buchanan strikes for top lot

Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan picked up the top lot at Inglis Scone Yearling Sale going to $60,000 for a colt by Widden's stallion Sebring.

Buchanan, who has had a career-high 26 winners so far this season, snapped up Lot 75 from Middlebrook Valley Lodge, a colt out of the stakes-placed imported mare She's Due (USA) (Devil His Due {USA}) who was bred by TJS Bloodstock.

Lot 75: Sebring x She's Due (USA)

He is a half-brother to three winners, including the seven-time American winner Ground Control {USA}) (Awesome Again {USA}) as well as recent Hong Kong placegetter Mr Darthvegar (Lope De Vega {Ire}), while the dam is a half-sister to US stakes-winner J D's Deelites (USA) (Afternoon Deelites {USA}).

Soon after Jenny Graham went to $55,000 for Lot 84, an Artie Schiller (USA) colt out of Sorcha Rose (Stravinsky {USA}) offered by Clarke and Croft Bloodstock. Sorcha Rose is a half-sister to Singaporean stakes winner Oscar Eight (Showcasing {GB}) and her dam Zafonique (NZ) (Bigstone {Ire}) is a sister to Group 2 winner Lady Mulan.

The highest-priced filly of the sale, Lot 170, was one of Deep Field's second crop snapped up by Rothwell Thoroughbreds for $55,000.

Lot 170: Deep Field x Enjoyment

She is from the family of G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Mossfun (Mossman) as well as Listed winner Cat D'Antibes (Tale Of The Cat {USA}).

Another Wyong trainer, Kim Waugh, paid $48,000 for Lot 29, a Rubick colt out of a sister to Group 1 winner Shinzig (Danehill {USA}). A brother to six winners, he was passed at the Classic Sale earlier this year and was sold by Davali Thoroughbreds on behalf of Huntworth Stud.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott were also active at the sale, paying $46,000 for Lot 36, an Al Maher colt out of Novita Flash (Lonhro).

Lamings spend up

Laming Racing were the biggest spenders on the day, picking up four lots for a combined $145,000 across its Victorian and Queensland operations, while SJ Racing picked up four yearlings for a total of $74,000, and John Foote two lots at $35,00 apiece.

Vietnam-based Keyhinge was the most active buyer, picking up six lots for a total of $28,000, continuing its busy sales season.

Widden Stud was the leading vendor on aggregate with $378,500 for the 18 it sold, while its former stallion Shamus Award topped total sales for all sires with $277,000, just ahead of former barnmate Outreach, who had 14 sell for $243,500.

Newgate's Super One (13 from 13 for a total of $226,500) and Wandijina (16 from 16 for a total of $205,000) boasted a 100 per cent clearance rate, while Deep Field topped averages for those stallions with more than three sales with an average of $37,750 across his four sold lots.

Middlebrook Valley Lodge had a strong sale with $329,500 in total sales across 16 lots, while the leading vendor on average was home town operation Ashleigh Thoroughbreds, whose three yearlings averaged $35,000.

The sale concludes Inglis Select Yearling Sale season and Managing Director Mark Webster was delighted with the results of the past few months,

“We had pre-empted the Classic Sale would experience a slight downturn given the huge hype and presence surrounding the 2018 sale which doubled as the opening of Riverside Stables, as well as the fact we opted to accept more than 1000 horses for our clients, but the sale was still very strong and gave us a great platform to launch off for the rest of the season,’’ Webster said.

“Melbourne Premier, with the opening of our revamped Oaklands Junction facility was a great success and Easter was again the pinnacle and again proved itself as clearly the best yearling sale in this part of the world for vendors to sell their best horses."

“I would like to thank all the breeders, vendors and buyers who have supported our sales in 2019 and I look forward to selling the best yearlings our breeders have produced for 2020.’’

Interesting Orfevre runner debuts at Taree

5 min read

By Anthony Manton

Orfevre (JPN) (Stay Gold {JPN}) is widely regarded as one of the best horses of his generation in Japan. A six-time Group 1 winner, Japanese Triple Crown winner and awarded Horse Of The Year and Best 3-year-old Colt in Japan in 2011, and Best Older Horse in 2012/13. He was inducted into the JRA Racing Hall of Fame in 2015.

Who could forget the Group 1 Prix De L’arc De Triomphe of 2012 when Orfevre went agonisingly close finishing 2nd after seemingly having the race all but won. He was 2nd again in 2013, and the race still eludes the Japanese.

Sent to stud in 2014, Orfevre was an immediate success. He sired a Group 1-winner in his first season with Lucky Lilac (Orfevre {JPN}), who was awarded Best 2-year-old Filly in Japan in 2017 and he backed it up in 2018 with Epoca D’oro (Orfevre {JPN}), winning the Group 1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), the same race Orfevre himself won in 2011.

Orfevre has had just one runner in Australia, Hokkaido Miss (JPN) (Orfevre {JPN}) a French-import trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, and is yet to sire a winner down under.

At Taree on Monday, Developed (JPN) (Orfevre {JPN}) trained by Kim Waugh will be just the second runner in Australia for Orfevre, when he kicks off his career in a 1400m maiden.

A 4-year-old by southern hemisphere standards, Developed first trialled at Newcastle on April 17, racing handily to the speed and accelerating when asked to win the heat by nearly 2 lengths.

At his second trial at Gosford on April 29, Developed was trapped three-wide throughout but despite the wide run showed toughness to knuckle-down and win again.

Developed was purchased at the JRHA Sale for ¥43,200,000 (AU$558,000), on account of Symboli Stud. Bloodstock agent Justin Bahen selected the horse for Hong Kong-based Little Kwok Hing Hung on behalf of Orbis Bloodstock.

“He was purchased out of a sale in Japan. At this sale all the yearlings on offer are in a paddock and you bid on them from there. They do things a little differently in Japan,” said Paul King, Director of Racing & Bloodstock for Orbis.

Developed is from the mare Miss Emma (Ire) (Key Of Luck {USA}), a four-time stakes-winner in Ireland and France. He is a half-brother to Kagura (USA) (Vindication {USA}), a stakes-winner in France as a 2-year-old, and Symboli Empire (USA) (Empire Maker {USA}) and Symboli Tapit (USA) (Tapit {USA}) both well-performed Japanese milers.

Purchased in Japan, reared in the UK and now trained at Wyong, Developed has taken the long route to get to where he is now.

“He was originally purchased to race in the UK and spent a good bit of time over there, then Orbis decided to close down their UK operation to focus on the Australian side of the business and all the horses were imported to Australia,” said King.

King, who rides all the Orbis Bloodstock horses in trackwork and gives recommendations on where to place them, has always believed Developed was worth persevering with.

“As part of my role with Orbis, I ride all of their horses and always thought he had the ability. I suggested we keep him and it was just a case of turning his attitude around”.

“As part of my role with Orbis, I ride all of their horses and always thought he had the ability. I suggested we keep him". - Paul King

“He took a long time to find his feet in Australia, he’s a very strong-willed horse and it’s taken a lot of work with him to behave,” said King.

Trainer Kim Waugh has also been impressed with the progression of Development, and expects he will be much better next preparation and once he gets to a mile and beyond.

Paul King, Kenny Au (Orbis Bloodstock) and Kris Lees

“He was very uneducated when we got him, he’d basically done nothing during his time in the UK and he’s come a long way since. Kim likes him and believes we won’t see the best of him until next preparation and once he gets to a mile and beyond,” said King.

Developed has drawn barrier 1 for jockey Serg Lisnyy, and King believes Taree looks an ideal starting point for Developed.

“We scratched him from Scone on Friday when he drew wide and saved him for Taree, and it looks a good race for him to kick off with. He’s bred to get a mile and beyond so 1400m for his first start will be ideal, and from gate 1 he’s going to get every chance,” said King.

“He’s bred to get a mile and beyond so 1400m for his first start will be ideal, and from gate 1 he’s going to get every chance,” - Paul King.

Just last month, Orbis Bloodstock had a winner at Taree with Bellum (GB) (Battle Of Marengo{Ire}), trained by Kris Lees, who was among the same group of horses exported from the UK with Developed.

Lane claims Japan G1

Australian jockey Damian Lane continued his amazing start to his Japanese riding stint with a treble in Tokyo, including a win on Normcore (Jpn) (Harbinger {Jpn}) in the G1 Victoria Mile.

Lane, a 15-time Group 1 winning jockey in Australia, secured the biggest winner since arriving in Japan, on the Kiyoshi Hagiwara trained Normcore.

His Sunday treble added to the four winners he rode on Saturday, which included victory on Tower of London (Jpn) (Raven's Pass {USA}) in the G2 Spring Cup.

Nature Strip sent for spell

Group 1 winning sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi) is headed to the paddock after his unlucky fourth on Saturday's G1 Doomben 10,000.

The Chris Waller trained Nature Strip missed the start after being fitted with earmuffs for the 1200m race and having worked hard would finish 1.2l adrift of winner The Bostonian (NZ) (Jimmy Choux {NZ}).

Owner Rod Lyons said the earmuff experiment had backfired and confirmed that Nature Strip would now be spelled and readied for a likely tilt at The Everest.

Viddora still a chance to return

Lloyd Kennewell is still keeping a continuation of Viddora's (I Am Invincible) racing career on the table as the mare spells in England after her global sojourn.

Quarantine restriction means Viddora must spend six months in England before she is allowed back into Australia, having race in Dubai and Hong Kong over the past couple of months, but while the dual Group 1 winner is in England, she won't race there and will likely return to Australia.

However, the breeding barn is not certain to be her destination, with Kennewell telling Racenet she may yet race on.

“She’s having a good break and we’ll decide what we’re going to do. We’ve still got plenty of time," he said.

“Whether it’s breeding season or whether it’s push on, we’ve got time to let it all unfold.”

McEvoy duo head to Goodwood

Tony McEvoy has confirmed that in-form mare Cool Passion (Not A Single Doubt) will join stablemate Despatch (Written Tycoon) in Saturday's G1 The Goodwood at Morphettvile.

Cool Passion was runner-up in last Saturday's G1 Robert Sangster S. and McEvoy said the seven-year-old mare would back up into Saturday's $750,000 race.

Despatch has won three straight races this campaign including the G3 McKay S. at Morphettville last time out and his trainer feels he is ready for the step up in class.

Good Standing back to Group class

A Sha Tin win from ex-Australian galloper Good Standing (Artie Schiller {USA}) has trainer John Moore eyeing some Hong Kong black-type.

A stakes winner in Australia in the G3 Caulfield Classic in 2016, the Gooree Stud-bred Good Standing has now won two of his 12 starts in Hong Kong and Moore thinks he is ready to step up.

"There's a mile race in early June, the (G3) Lion Rock Trophy Handicap, and another option for him at the end of June (G3 Premier Cup [1400m]). He'd be competitive again because he's holding his form well. He's not over-raced this season so there is plenty left in the tank," Moore said.

"He's come out today and done what I wanted him to do and he came close to the track record so, yes, couldn't be happier."

Unimaginable error to be probed by stewards

Another mix-up in Queensland racing will be investigated by Racing Queensland stewards after a horse saluted at Toowoomba on Saturday wearing the wrong saddlecloth number.

Royal Warfare (Fastnet Rock) crossed the line first in race six but was incorrectly wearing saddlecloth No.5, when it should have been No. 4, which was worn by Unimagineable (Myboycharlie {Ire}).

The wrong numbers were semaphored on course and the wrong dividends displayed initially before the issue was noticed by the chief steward overseeing the meeting and correct numbers were adjusted prior to correct weight.

Another Verry good option for Bishara

Nick Bishara is keeping his options open with Verry Flash (NZ (Zed {NZ}) after his win at Rotorua on Saturday.

The bigger brother of G1 Australian Oaks winner Verry Elleegant (NZ) has now won five of 18 starts after his win in the Craig Thom Memorial and Bishara is considering various long-term options with him.

G1 Australian Oaks winner Verry Elleegant (NZ)

“He (Verry Flash) is a really good horse, he’s no Verry Elleegant, but he’s a really good horse," he said. “He is a big striding horse who wobbled around the bend but when he flattened out, he let down good.”

Verry Flash was eighth in the G1 Auckland Cup in March and Bishara is keen to test him out at the two miles again.

"I think he will get two miles although it may have been a year too soon for the Auckland Cup. We’ll just tinker around and wait for the spring and work our way through the grades,” he said.

American Pharoah Leads Sires At Arqana

In another big result for 2015 U.S. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (USA), the stallion’s son from Tare Green (USA) (Giant’s Causeway) topped the Arqana Breeze Up Sale when selling for €1.1 million to the Broadhurst Agency on behalf of M.V. Magnier on Saturday.

A US$275,000 purchase at Keeneland September last year, he was consigned by Brendan Holland’s Grove Stud at Arqana.

“He’s been bought for the Coolmore partners and we were ordered to get a very nice colt, he’s the best colt of the sale, to go to Andre Fabre,” Broadhurst Agency’s Laurent Benoit said. “He came especially to see him yesterday and he was delighted with the horse. [The colt] coped very well with sales prep, [he has a] lovely mind, and of course his ability made everything easy for him I think. He was very well prepared by Grove Stud, which is a lovely nursery.”

The colt is from an unraced half-sister to U.S. champion and sire Leroidesanimaux (BRZ) (Candy Stripes {USA}), whose dam is a half-sister to top broodmare Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire]) and her full-sister, 2018 British Broodmare of the Year Arrive.

Return to Belmont the charm for Channel Maker

A return to Belmont Park was just what the winner’s circle ordered for Channel Maker (CAN) (English Channel {USA}) on Saturday when the gelding won the Grade 1 Man O’War.

Channel Maker had been off the board in three starts since his first Grade 1 victory at the same track last fall but that all changed when he chased down Hunting Horn (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the concluding stages of the 2200 metre race.

Hunting Horn went straight to the front early on and tried to play a game of catch me if you can as the pacesetter Channel Maker took his spot in third, watching the leader open up multiple lengths. It looked as though Hunting Horn may be able to pull off the victory as he still had a sizable lead half-way down the straight but as he began tiring, Channel Maker started closing in.

The gelding collared the leader inside the final 200 metres with Arklow (USA) (Arch {USA}) also closing to finish a narrow second with Hunting Horn’s stablemate Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) finishing just ahead of Hunting Horn for third. It was the second Grade 1 victory in a week for Bill Mott, who won the Kentucky Derby last weekend with Country House (USA) (Lookin At Lucky {USA}) with his other Derby runner Tacitus (USA) (Tapit {USA}) finishing third.

A full brother to Canada’s 2017 Champion Turf Male Johnny Bear (CAN), Channel Maker is out of a stakes winning Horse Chestnut (SAF) (Fort Wood {USA}) mare and comes from the family of 2-year-old French champion Carlotamix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr})

Bounding half-brother stamps ticket to Derby

Already a Group 2 winner as a 2-year-old, Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) continued to build his Epsom Derby case when winning the Listed RaceBets Derby Trial Stakes by 2 ¼ lengths with Ryan Moore aboard.

The race favourite was content to run in mid-pack as Severance (GB) (Nataniel {Ire}) set the pace a few lengths ahead of the field. Moore asked his mount to move a bit closer to the leader in the turn and had clear running room as they turned into the straight with Moore waiting patiently until the 400-metre mark to ask his mount to run.

Anthony Van Dyck took over the lead and had to battle Pablo Escobarr (Ire) (Galileo) but in the final 100 metres put the rival away to win with his ears pricked. Galileo sired the first two home in the race and was the grandsire of third placed Nate The Great (GB) through his son Nathaniel (Ire) with another son in Frankel (GB) siring the fourth place finisher.

Anthony Van Dyke is a half-brother to New Zealand Champion Sprinter Bounding (Lonhro) and out of Group 3 winning mare Believe’n’succeed (Exceed And Excel), who is a full-sister to Group 2 winner and sire Kuroshio.

Anapurna flies to Oaks Trial win

It was a big week for Frankel’s (GB) Epsom Oaks hopes when Anapurna (GB) made herself another strong Oaks contender in the Listed RaceBets Money Back All Losers Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes.

Running just behind the pacesetting Cape Islay (Fr) (Cape Cross {Ire}) throughout the race, Anapurna made her move to take over the lead with 400 metres left to run. Frankie Dettori gave her a few reminders after the filly took the lead but after glancing over his shoulder and seeing the field lengths behind them just let her gallop home with her ears pricked.

It was the second win for Anapurna, who was beaten on debut in December before romping over the Lingfield Polytrack in January. The filly has won her last two starts by a combined 11 lengths for trainer John Gosden. The win comes just days after Emirates Park’s Gosden-trained Mehdaayih won the Listed Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks for Frankel to also join Oaks talks.

“She showed as good mind, although she was green at times. She handled the bend well and put the race to bed very quickly,” Gosden told Thoroughbred Daily News. “We’re thrilled with her, as she is inexperienced and hadn’t even worked on turf before this. I liked the way she changed her legs coming down the hill and it was a really good trial effort. We’ll see how she is over the next few days and if she takes it well she is in the Oaks. We’ve got some lovely fillies and they all deserve to take their chance, as there is only one Oaks.”

Global Campaign On Belmont Trail

Global Campaign (USA) (Curlin {USA}) took his record to three wins in four starts on Saturday when winning the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on his way to the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes next month.

In a small field, the colt ran just behind pacesetting Federal Case in second during most of the 1800 metre race, grabbing the lead mid-turn and putting lengths on the field in what looked like it was going to be a runaway victory.

The surprise of the race was Sir Winston, who had been more than 10 lengths back mid-race but who rallied to finish a good second as the second longest shot on the board. Race favourite Intrepid Heart finished third, six lengths behind the leader.

Global Campaign is a half-brother to two-time Grade 1 winner Bolt d’Oro (USA) (Medaglia d’Oro {USA}), who will stand his first season at Spendthrift Australia later this year, and Listed winning Sonic Mule (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}) with all three of their dam’s runners to race now stakes winners.

Global Campaign is a half-brother to above Bolt d’Oro (USA)

Expressionist first winner for Night Of Thunder

It was a first winner for Darley stallion Night Of Thunder (Ire) on Saturday when Godolphin colt Expressionist (Ire) won on debut at Ascot.

Going off as the favourite, the colt sat just behind the pace in the 1000 metre affair before called upon to move toward the lead with 400 metres left. He moved up easily and joined a three-way battle before pulling away to win by three-quarter lengths over Clan Royale (Siyouni {Fr}).

A 300,000gns 2-year-old purchase earlier this year Expressionist was the fifth runner for his sire with two others placing in their runs. Night Of Thunder shuttled to Australia in 2016 with his first southern hemisphere runners hitting the track next season.
