Tavistock fee a reflection of the NZ market

Cambridge Stud’s flagship stallion and internationally successful sire Tavistock (NZ) will stand the 2019 season at a reduced service fee of NZ$50,000 + GST, a move that reflects the current New Zealand market.

Chief Executive Officer Henry Plumptre said the stud had recognised the wider industry’s move to provide support to breeders and the fees were set accordingly.

“A number of studs have reduced fees, acknowledging that breeders are going through difficult times.

“Our business model with the stallion line-up is to try and provide New Zealand breeders with a range of stallions at affordable prices.

“With the current state of affairs, breeders need to be helped in every way that we can to keep them in the game and continue to keep their businesses afloat by presenting commercial yearlings for a viable return.”

On that basis, Tavistock’s fee has been reduced by Cambridge Stud.

Tavistock

“In 2019, yearling market support for his progeny remained strong, particularly from Australian-based trainers and owners, underlining the confidence in the young stock coming through,” Plumptre said.

“Tavistock has enjoyed success at Group 1 level in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, making him a truly international Group 1 sire.”

The son of Montjeu’s Group 1 successes includes two Australian Derbies, two Rosehill Guineas and, in Hong Kong, his son Werther (NZ) remains the highest rated 2000 metre horse of all time.

Cambridge Stud newcomer Roaring Lion (USA) comes to New Zealand as the highest rated 3-year-old in the world last year, having being crowned Cartier Horse of the Year and Longines World Champion 3-Year-Old.

The son of Kitten's Joy (USA) won four consecutive Group 1 races at weight-for-age in the United Kingdom to earn a Timeform rating of 130.

“In all of his victories, he displayed an extraordinary turn of foot which is the hallmark of a great racehorse and often a great stallion,” Plumptre said.

Roaring Lion stands in England for 40,000 pounds and he will stand at Cambridge Stud at a service fee of NZ$35,000 + GST.

Almanzor well-received

Almanzor (Fr) stood his first season at Cambridge Stud last year and received a warm welcome.

“Strong support from local breeders saw a number take shares in him and he covered a full book of 140 mares.

“His sire Wootton Bassett had a stellar season in France last year and his fee has doubled in 2019 from 20,000 to 40,000 euros,” Plumptre said.

“Early reports and pictures of Almanzor’s Northern Hemisphere foals are very encouraging and he will stand at an unchanged fee of NZ$30,000.”

Promising start

Burgundy (NZ) has made an encouraging start to his career and produced the New Zealand Bloodstock 3-Year-Old Filly of the Year Dijon Bleu (NZ) from his first crop.

“Burgundy’s yearlings were sought after and many have gone to homes in Sydney and Melbourne, underlining the regard that Australia has for his sire Redoute’s Choice,” Plumptre said.

A NZ$1.3 million yearling, Burgundy will stand for a fee of NZ$6000 + GST.

Son of a gun

Meanwhile, Embellish (NZ) is the first Group 1 winning son of Champion sire Savabeel to go to stud.

Embellish

Embellish won the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas at only his fourth career start and is a product of the classic Savabeel/O’Reilly (NZ) cross that has produced multiple stakes winners both in New Zealand and Australia.

“A brother to Group 1 winner Diademe and a NZ$775,000 yearling, Embellish oozes quality and is a great exponent of New Zealand’s classic, international sire line,” Plumptre said.

“We strongly encourage breeders to come and see him at the farm. Cambridge Stud is offering a limited number of shares in Embellish and he will stand for a fee of NZ$5000 + GST.”
