Group 1 Doomben Cup

Race Summary:

A gem of a ride from John Allen saw Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt) collect her second Group 1 prize from her last three starts.

Winner of the Queen of the Turf S. at Randwick last month, she settled behind the leading division and when Allen spied clear air near the fence in the straight the mare took full advantage.

She burst clear to beat Life Less Ordinary (Ire) (Thewayyouare {USA}), who came from well back in the field and Sixties Groove (Ire) (Sixties Icon {GB}) took third ahead of stablemate Gem Song (Your Song).

Pedigree Notes :

Kenedna is a half-sister to four winners, including the G2 QTC Cup winner Spill The Beans (Snitzel) with their dam Miss Dodwell (Falbrav {Ire}).

She is a half-sister to the G3 Rain Lover Plate winner Yammer (Bellotto {USA}) and to the Listed winner Blab (Flying Spur), who is the dam of the G1 Flight S. winner Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor).

It is also the family of the former Australian Horse of the Year and multiple Group 1 winner Bounding Away (Biscay).

Group 2 The Roses

Race Summary:

Etana (Shamus Award) was given plenty of time to find her feet by John Allen before picking up ground across the top.

The filly responded gallantly from the top of the straight and produced a sustained finish for the fourth win of her nine-start career.

Aliferous (Hinchinbrook), fourth in the G1 Australian Oaks at her previous appearance, came home well from the back of the pack for second with Welsh Legend (Camelot {GB}) also closing off well for third.

Pedigree Notes:

Etana was a $400,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase and is a half-sister to the Group 3 performer Echo Gal (Stratum).

Their dam Pink Siris (Encosta de Lago) was a winner and a Listed placegetter and is a sister to the former champion Hong Kong stayer Liberator.

Pink Siris is a daughter of the European stakes winner Miss Helga (Ire) (Alzao {USA}), a sister to the North American Group 3 winner Alexis (Ire).

Group 3 BRC Sprint

Race Summary:

Tyzone (Written Tycoon) improved on his already impressive record when he made his 16th career victory his first Group stakes win in 31 starts.

Tyzone was comfortably running in the back pack of the field on the outside of other horses with only two beat. As the field entered the straight, Tyzone swung wide and easily started passing horses with a clear path in front of him.

He showed an impressive turn of foot to go from last to winning by nearly two lengths over Violate (Sebring). Violate won a photo finish for second over I’m a Rippa (Love Conquers All) with Chapter And Verse (Rothesay) just another nose back in fourth after a hard luck run.

Pedigree Notes:

Tyzone is the only stakes winner from Rezonet (Hussonet {USA}), who herself is a three-time winning half-sister to Group 3 placed Spirited Eagle (Not a Single Doubt).

Her second dam is the Group 2 winner Society Bay (Zephyr Bay) who produced two stakes winners, two more stakes placed horses and is the granddam of Group 1 winner Irish Fling (Darci Brahma). Society Bay is also the second dam of New Zealand champion Final Destination (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), who produced a Group winner herself.

Rezonet had a five year break between foals with her next youngest after Tyzone a weanling filly by Winning Rupert. The mare is in foal to Golden Slipper winner Capitalist.

Listed Bill Carter S.

Race Summary:

Perudo (Spirit Of Boom) became the sixth 2-year-old stakes winner for her Queensland-based sire with a close victory at Doomben on Saturday.

The filly broke on the fence and took full advantage of that spot when running in about fourth just behind the leaders. With 300 metres left it looked like the filly wouldn’t get running room in time as the leading Niedorp (Not A Single Doubt) pulled away. But when a gap opened, Perudo found another gear and was closing fast at the 100-metre mark.

The last 100 metres turned into a real battle for the win as Perudo caught Niedorp but had to hold off the undefeated Gem Of Scotland (Rothesay) for the victory. The wire came at just the right time with Perudo keeping the win by the bob of a nose over Gem Of Scotland. Niedorp was close behind in third to give trainer Tony Gollan a 1-3 finish in the race.

Pedigree Notes:

Perudo also becomes the first stakes winner from her dam Goodlookin Gambler (Johannesburg {USA}), who was a winner herself.

Goodlookin Gambler is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Scenic Peak (Scenic) with half-sister Shirbelle (Spectacular Sky) producing two other stakes horses.

Sold for $320,000 at the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale, Perudo is one of four winners from five runners out of her dam with 14 wins between them.

Listed Bright Shadow Quality

Race Summary:

Quilista (Scandal Keeper {USA}) enters the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale with a big update after winning at Doomben.

The mare galloped comfortably under Kerrin McEvoy, taking the lead soon out of the barriers in the 1200 metre race with Miss Que (Fastnet Rock) close behind. As they hit the straight it was obvious Quilista had the race locked up until something unforeseen happened.

Nothing did with Quilista running away from the field to win her ninth career race. The battle for second was much closer than the one for the win with Test The World (NZ) (Testa Rossa) just edging out River Racer (Hidden Dragon).

Like Quilista, Test The World will be going through the Magic Millions ring on May 28 with fourth placed Miss Que joining them.

Pedigree Notes:

Sold for $10,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, Quilista is from Listed placed Brocky’s Ace (Surtee). Those two mares are the best runners under Brocky’s Ace’s first two dams with her third dam producing a Listed placed filly and another mare from that dam producing a Group 2-placed gelding.

Under Brocky’s Ace’s fourth dam is Group 1 Western Australian Oaks winner India’s Dream (NZ) (Western Symphony {USA}), who is the granddam of Xanadu (NZ) (Elusive City {USA}) and her half-sister Group 1 winner Hasty Departure (NZ) (Red Anchor {NZ}).

Brocky’s Ace’s 2-year-old Vital Call (Vital Equine {Ire}) is already placed and she had a filly by War Chant (USA) last season. She was served by Safeguard in 2018.

Listed Chief De Beers Quality

Race Summary:

Godolphin struck again in Queensland on Saturday when Isaurian (Exceed and Excel) won in a photo.

The 4-year-old was in the middle of the tightly packed field, enjoying a run one path off the rail. As they turned into the straight, multiple horses were within striking distance of the leading Whypeeo (I Am Invincible) with Straturbo (Stratum) taking the first crack at him and grabbing the lead in the final 200 metres.

It looked like Isaurian may be making his move too late when he approached the leader with under 200 metres to go but he was quick to close the margin and grabbed the lead in the final few strides to win in a photo with In Good Time (Time Thief) also threatening for the win with a close third.

Pedigree Notes:

As to be expected, Isaurian has lived up to the name on his pedigree with his dam Byzantine (Elusive Quality {USA}) a half-sister to five-time Group 1 winner Mummify (Jeune) and the dam of Group 3 winner Take Pride (Reward For Effort).

A two-time winner herself, Byzantine was purchased as a yearling by Darley in 2008 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $160,000. Since joining their broodmare band, she is three-for-three on stakes horses with her first foal being Isaurian’s full brother and Group 3 winner Ottoman, her second the Listed placed Nemrud (Reset) and the third Isaurian himself.

Byzantine’s youngest is the unraced 3-year-old gelding Constantinople, a full brother to Nemrud in training with John Salanitri.
