It is likely that the Teeley Assets dispersal consignment of mares at the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale in May 2014 will remain the highest-grossing batch for many years.
That draft consisted of 56 lots, the bulk of whom descended from the great matron Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad) and they accrued an aggregate of $23,037,000. Ten of the lots fetched a seven-figure sum, with the average being $404,158.
The Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale has seen several notable drafts since then which, although inevitably unable to challenge those figures, have racked up very healthy returns. Widden’s consignment in 2016 fetched over $10,000,000, as did the drafts from both Coolmore and Newgate in 2018.
A stellar collection
This year Newgate has entered a stellar collection in the Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale, and the overwhelming likelihood is that it will accrue an aggregate second only to Teeley Assets’ untouchable total of 2014.
Newgate (as agent) is set to offer 65 lots in the main part of its consignment. Additionally, it will offer four on behalf of Darby Racing, three for Aston Bloodstock and two for Blueblood Thoroughbreds.
Nine of the elite mares have been given an extra marketing push, with content available in the form of “buyer’s passports” accessed on the Newgate website.
Easily the larger part of its main draft falls within the ‘Broodmare’ part of the sale, but its smaller offering in the ‘Race Fillies and Maiden Mares’ section is no less mouth-watering.
Most notably this batch contains Lot 867, the Group 1-winning five-year-old I Am A Star (NZ) (I Am Invincible), nine of whose 10 victories have come in Group company. She is backed up by such talented gallopers as the Group 3 winners Bleu Roche (Fastnet Rock) and Agent Pippa (Demerit) as well as listed scorer Our Crown Witness (Star Witness). Those three are Lots 809, 999 and 918 respectively.
Naturally Newgate’s own stallions feature prominently in the backgrounds of many of those on offer, including two half-sisters to its exciting young sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon).
Exciting siblings
The first of these to go under the hammer will be Lot 1261, Ineffable (Smart Missile), with Lot 1592, Stresa (Real Saga), following along later. Understandably, both are offered with a covering by Capitalist’s sire Written Tycoon, a factor which gives them considerable further appeal.
Another member of the Newgate draft with an eye-catchingly appropriate covering is Lot 1566, Sous La Terre (Pierro). She is a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Solar Charged (Charge Forward), dam of the outstanding Sunlight (Zoustar).
The decision to have Sous La Terre covered last spring by Zoustar must have been an easy one even at the time and has been further vindicated by the three Group 1 victories which last year’s GCTC Magic Millions 2YO Classic heroine has landed since Sous La Terre’s last service on 5 September.
In that time, Sunlight has, of course, landed the G1 VRC Coolmore Stud S. in November, and the G1 VRC Seppelt Wines Newmarket H. and the G1 MVRC Keogh Homes William Reid S. in March.
Sous La Terre carries a cover to Zoustar
Similarly well-mated would appear to be Lot 1369, Members Joy (Hussonet {USA}) whose first foal, currently aged three, is the dual Group 2 winner Pure Elation (I Am Invincible). Again, this mare is offered with a mouth-watering covering, having been covered (of course) by I Am Invincible.
Another carrying a cover to I Am Invincible, the stallion who stands for Australia’s highest fee, is Vezalay (Shamardal {Ire}), the stakes winning daughter of the Flying Spur mare Tactfully.
Proven producers
Mares offered by Newgate who have already bred stakes winners include Lot 1347, the Tasmanian Oaks-winning Beautiful Crown mare Maha Chatri, dam of ATC Breeders’ Plate and BRC Lightning H. winner Whittington (Tale Of The Cat {USA}); Lot 1558, Slice Of Royalty (Johannesburg {USA}) who is already responsible for G3 GCTC Ken Russell Memorial Classic winner Royal Tithe (Show A Heart); and Lot 1081, Cinnamon Dove (USA) (Gulch {USA}), dam of Canberra Cup winner Dark Eyes (Snitzel). All three of these mares are offered in foal to Newgate’s brilliantly fast young stallion Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon).
Winning Rupert
There are a total of 11 mares in the draft with a Capitalist covering. One of particular interest is Lot 1747, Awesome Amy (Smart Missile), a half-sister to G1 SAJC Ubet Classic winner Secret Agenda (Not A Single Doubt).
Other covering sires featured in the consignment include I Am Invincible, More Than Ready, Zoustar and Sebring. The last-named is the covering sire for two mares in the draft: G3 ATC Birthday Card S. winner Shamalia (Shamardal {USA}) and dual US listed winner Katie’s Eyes (USA) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).
Blueblood offerings
The lots offered by Newgate on behalf of Blueblood Thoroughbreds feature in the ‘Race Fillies and Maiden Mares’ section. Both are very interesting prospects, boasting high-class form. Lot 941 is last year’s last year’s G2 BRC Brisbane Cup heroine Sedanzer (Sebring) and Lot 949 is She’s So High (I Am Invincible), successful last season in the G3 SAJC Proud Miss S.
Sedanzer
Newgate’s offerings on behalf of Darby Racing also include some quality stock who should hold considerable appeal for breeders.
They are arguably headed by Lot 998, the winning Snitzel filly Age Of War who is a full-sister to the dual Group 2 winner Time For War and who comes from the immediate family of the champions Might And Power (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) and Beauty Parlour (GB) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
The three mares consigned by Newgate for Aston Bloodstock have all been covered by Newgate-based sires and include Lot 1617, Tahnee Tango (Grand Lodge {USA}) who hails from one of the best families in the book, being a grand-daughter of the legendary Pride Of Tahnee (Best Western). Aged 15, she has had time to put together a decent breeding record and her winners include G3 GCTC Gunsynd Classic winner Worthy Cause (Choisir).
With the Newgate draft conspicuous for both quality and quantity, the stud can surely look forward to a memorable sale.
