Justifiable expense as partnership claims top lot

Coolmore’s determination to give Justify (USA) the best possible start to his Australian stud career continued on day two of the Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale with a new buying partnership securing the day’s headline act.

Successful game plan

Coolmore and Magic Millions co-owner Gerry Harvey paired together on Wednesday and their considerable resources were more than enough to purchase the day’s highest-price mare, paying $1,550,000 to secure Global Glamour (Star Witness).

As it did on Tuesday, the result tied in with a consistent sale theme and the Widden Stud consigned 5-year-old, who was offered as Lot 1219, is among a glittering array of richly-bred mares confirmed for the American Triple Crown winner, who serves his first Australian book at Coolmore later this year.

When asked the circumstances which led to the formation of the partnership, Harvey said it was finalised after an eventful evening out. “It was after a late night and I gave in.”

No stopping

And he further revealed they would have kept going to ensure they beat off the opposition to make Global Glamour their own.

“We would have kept going, they wouldn’t have got us,” Harvey said.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Global Glamour was a high class performer on the track and won five races including the G1 Flight S. and the G1 Thousand Guineas.

She was offered for sale in foal to Widden’s Zoustar, yet another attraction.

“She’s got a lot of quality, she was an amazing race filly and it’s nice to be involved with Gerry,” Tom Magnier said.

“Magic Millions has done a great job and got all the right people to the Gold Coast and we’re lucky we got her.” – Tom Magnier.

“Magic Millions has done a great job and got all the right people to the Gold Coast and we’re lucky we got her.

Also a major player in the Global Glamour story is agent James Bester, who is closely aligned to Coolmore and purchased her as a yearling on the Gold Coast for just $65,000.

"James is a great judge and he bought a great filly (as a yearling) and well done to everyone who went into the ladies’ syndicate,” Magnier said.

She was subsequently raced by a 40-strong group of women, the It’s All About The Girls syndicate, from seven countries.

The syndicate was founded by the United States-based Anna Seitz and Elaine Lawlor, who divides her time between the United Kingdom and Australia, and they brought together female thoroughbred enthusiasts from all parts of the globe.

MM bonus support

The purchase of Global Glamour in January, 2015 was a demonstration of international support for the Magic Millions Racing Women’s (MMRW) Bonus, the brain-child of Magic Millions co-owner Katie Page-Harvey.

“Thanks to Katie’s game changing initiative, It's All About The Girls certainly lived the dream and had so much fun racing this fabulous filly,” Lawlor said.

“Global Glamour is a gift that just keeps on giving. We will be back at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale next January to find another.”

Bester said he was delighted with the racing career and end sale result of Global Glamour.

“I would have hated there to have been an anti-climax,” he said. “She is the best mare to go through the ring in terms of performance. In my view, in terms of physique, she is exactly the type of mare Justify deserves.

“She is the best mare to go through the ring in terms of performance.” – James Bester.

“I cannot even imagine what she could produce by him. She is in foal to Zoustar, which is a wonderful start anyway, and to follow that up with a Justify will be wonderful.”

“She could go to any Coolmore stallion, she is free of Danehill, but Justify is the reason she was bought.”

Global Glamour is a graduate of Lauriston Thoroughbreds and James O'Brien was a seriously satisfied breeder as sale events unfolded.

"There was no possible way that I thought she would make that mark when she was born, but after seeing her racing career evolve, I'm very proud to see that result," he said.

"She is the best filly that we've produced. She did an amazing job on the racetrack."

Extra olives please

Earlier in the session, Coolmore also added the Redoute’s Choice mare Extra Olives to Justify’s dance card when she was bought out of Newgate’s draft for $875,000.

“She’s obviously a lovely type with a great page and we’re building a great book for Justify,” Magnier said. “A lot of the best people have booked to him and we’re just adding to that.”

Lot 1180, Extra Olives in foal to I Am Invincible

The winner of four races and runner-up in the G3 Vanity S., Extra Oliver is a grand-daughter of four-time Group 1 winner Alinghi (Encosta de Lago)

“We’ve had a fair bit to do with the pedigree over the years. It’s a very good family and this mare’s got a lot of quality,” Magnier said.

Another major plus for Coolmore was the cover – Extra Olives is in foal to I Am Invincible.

Solid business

The sale gross has now grown to almost $55 million with an average price of $146,914 and a clearance rate of 79 per cent with 373 lots sold.

"We may not have had the fireworks of Tuesday, but it was a really solid day's trade - above our expectations," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"What I've enjoyed is that the vendors who have met the market have been able to find buyers and full credit to the vendors who have come here with realistic reserves. Hopefully, they're walking away with good results."

Bowcock’s regard for Zoustar spurs sale purchase

6 min read
Zoustar is a horse close to Andrew Bowcock’s heart and on the second day of the Gold Coast Broodmare Sale he showed that by going to $750,000 for the Group winner Girl In Flight (Commands), who is in foal to the leading stallion.

Andrew Bowcock has played a major role in Zoustar’s auction ring success and so there was no surprise he targeted Lot 1215, the grey mare Girl In Flight offered by Yarraman Park with a cover to the Widden Stud stallion.

“I know a bit about Zoustar and sold his highest-priced yearling this year,” Bowcock said. “I’ve got an affinity with him and did a bit of work with Widden helping to launch him.”

The first Zoustar youngster to break the seven figure mark was sold for $1,075,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and was bought by Yulong and Rifa Mustang.

Girl In Flight won the G3 Schweppervescence and is from a European family that includes Prince Gibraltar (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire).

“I’ve always loved Commands as well and her first foal by I Am Invincible is with Godolphin,” Bowcock said.

“She’ll go back to the Hunter where I’ve got my mares and we’ll sort things out from there.”

Agent goes distance

Tom Pritchard-Gordon admitted he was almost out of gas in his pursuit of Dee Nine Elle (Duporth), but the post came up in the nick of time for Badgers Bloodstock's co-owner.

The English agent nailed Lot 1119 from Kitchwin Hills at $720,000 on behalf of Glentree Thoroughbreds and was delighted to have got in the final blow.

“It’s a cliché I know, but she did tick all the boxes, she’s an outstanding individual,” Pritchard-Gordon said.

“That was at the very top end of what we wanted to spend, but she’s special and with plenty of upside.”

Lot 1119, Dee Nine Elle in foal to Coolmore stallion Merchant Navy

Dee Nine Elle was offered in foal to Merchant Navy and having witnessed his Group 1 sprinting exploits in the Diamond Jubilee S., the mare was at the top of Pritchard-Gordon’s shopping list.

“I saw what he did at Royal Ascot and he was pretty special down here too,” he said.

“I saw what he did at Royal Ascot and he was pretty special down here too.” – Tom Pritchard-Gordon.

“We haven’t decided the next mating, but she does deserve to go to any top class stallion. It’s a massive bonus that she’s a complete outcross.”

The winner of five races and stakes placed, Dee Nine Elle is a half-sister to the G2 Todman S. winner Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) who can bring further credits to the family roll of honour.

“He looks to be top class and hopefully can get a Group 1,” Pritchard-Gordon said.

Their dam Sin Sin Sin (Fantastic Light {USA}) is a half-sister to the stakes wining siblings Hot As Hell (County) and Flaming Hot and to Craig’s Dragon (Catbird).

A headline act on the pedigree page is In Her Time (Time Thief), the dual Group 1 winner of the Galaxy H. and the Lightning S.

Harron in early action

James Harron was on the front foot early in the session to snap up Blonde Intuition, Lot 1032, out of the Newgate draft for $600,000.

The prominent bloodstock agent had numerous reasons to purchase the mare on behalf of Sydney identity Nick Vass, not the least her parentage and the fact she is in foal to exciting young stallion Capitalist.

“Obviously, there aren’t too many more Redoute’s Choice mares and I love the family,” Harron said. “She’s by Australia’s best broodmare sire.

“There’s a lot of depth to the family and young performers from it popping up every year. She’s the whole package and in foal to Capitalist.”

"She’s the whole package and in foal to Capitalist.” - James Harron.

Harron purchased Capitalist for $165,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale and managed the champion colt’s career, which netted four wins and a G1 Golden Slipper S. title before he retired to Newgate.

“His first foals were very well received and we’re very excited about the stock we have,” he said. “They’ll have serious appeal at the yearling sales, he’s made a great start.”

Capitalist

A 2-year-old winner, Blonde Intuition is out of the Group performer Hanky Panky (Anabaa {USA}), who has produced the G3 Up And Coming S. winner Master Ash (Sebring) and the multiple stakes winner Come Hither (Redoute’s Choice).

The dam is also a half-sister to Group 1 producer Not A Single Doubt and to the dams of G1 Flight S. winner Oohood (I Am Invincible) and G1 Golden Slipper S. runner-up and sire Zizou.

Harron said this year’s breeding plan for Blonde Intuition would be confirmed following discussions with Vass.

“We’ll sit down and have a chat, there are plenty of options for her.”

Harron also went to $500,000 for Caveat (Elusive Quality {USA}), Lot 1065, consigned by Yarraman Park Stud and in foal to its resident champion I Am Invincible.

“She’s from a wonderful colonial family and in foal with a nice, early cover to a leading stallion,” he said.

Harron’s pre-sale value of Caveat, a 2-year-old winner and dam of two multiple winners, proved to be on the money.

“She’s from a wonderful colonial family and in foal with a nice, early cover to a leading stallion." - James Harron.

“It was on the mark. You have to consider the service and work around that,” he said. “These are hard mares to find, they don’t come along very often.”

A daughter of G1 Queensland Derby winner Camarena (Danehill {USA}), Caveat is a sister to the G1 AJC Sires’ Produce S. winner Camarilla, who has produced the dual Group 1 winner Guelph (Exceed And Excel). She is in turn the mother of the G2 Danehill S, winner Encryption (Lonhro).

Surace strikes

Ricky Surace is growing his presence in the industry under his B2B Thoroughbreds banner and he made another splash on Wednesday with the $600,000 purchase of the Group winner Elle Lou (Snitzel).

Consigned as Lot 1160 by Newgate, the package deal was made even more attractive with a cover to I Am Invincible.

“She’s pretty good value – a very good page and a great type,” Surace said. “We hope to get the foal back here to sell in the coming years.”

“She’s pretty good value – a very good page and a great type.” – Ricky Surace.

He is in no rush to commit to a stallion this year for his new acquisition.

“We’ll wait and see how the I Am Invincible comes out and then plan a mating,” Surace said.

He has this year established a base in the Southern Highlands with a property at Mittagong where the intention is to strengthen the broodmare band.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s a big enterprise and we’d like to have 40 or 50 mares,” he said.

Surace also own shares in stallions Cable Bay (Ire), Merchant Navy, Star Witness and Xtravagant (NZ) as well as the G2 Sandown Guineas winning colt Ringerdingding (Sebring).

$1 million payday ends 20-year journey

5 min read
What ended up as a seven-figure deal on the big stage of the Gold Coast this week, started out 20 years ago when a tiny filly stepped off a float at Mornington.

The $1 million pricetag achieved by the Oregon's Day (Domesday) at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale is the perfect way for Paul Girolami and his fellow shareholders to end an ownership syndicate which has been on an amazing 20-year journey.

Aquis Farm snapped up the 5-year-old Group 2 winner on Tuesday, strengthening the connection between Aquis owner Tony Fung and his favourite stallion Domesday.

What ended up as a seven-figure deal on the big stage of the Gold Coast through vendor Amarina Farm, started out 20 years ago when Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Bob Skelton imported a filly from New Zealand, who his wife initially mistook for a pony.

Girolami and a few friends were convinced by Skelton to go in shares for the filly, who would be called Oregon Seal (Oregon {USA}).

"We just went in to help Bob as a trainer. We were good friends of the Skeltons here at Mornington," Girolami said.

"She was such a little thing. It was declared that she was the smallest thoroughbred going around at the time. From there, it’s been a quite ridiculously, fantastic journey."

"She was such a little thing. It was declared that she was the smallest thoroughbred going around at the time." - Owner Paul Girolami

What she lacked in size, Oregon Seal made up for in courage and on the racetrack she would win nine races, including a G3 Tesio S. and $286,000 in prizemoney.

Skelton then decided to breed with her, taking his syndicate of owners on another stage of the journey.

Oregon Seal (rail)

All of her eight foals have been winners, including Talent Show (Jeune {GB}), who was sold for $100,000 as yearling and won a G2 Perth Cup and Oregon Spirit (Bel Esprit), who the syndicate raced themselves, and was a stakes winner with over $400,000 in prizemoney.

But her best progeny was last filly to make the track. Under Mick Price's guidance, Oregon's Day won a Listed race at her second start, the first of four stakes wins as she collected nearly $1m in prizemoney.

But with many of the members of the ownership syndicate in their 80s, it was decided that it was time to cash in and she was sent to the Broodmare Sale to test the market.

"We had a word to Mick Price and few others, and we thought, we'd ask for $750,000 and see how we go and there might be someone interested and we might get up to $800,000. Turns out there were people interested and it went up to million," Girolami said.

"She's won $960,000 and she sold for $1 million. Interestingly enough this time last year, after she had a very good campaign in Sydney and Brisbane, we thought we'll probably be selling her as a 5-year old."

"We thought she might have two more good campaigns and might fluke a Group 1 and we might get $1m out of her. She's had two campaigns that went pear-shaped and she has still made a million!"

Oregon's Day (white, blue spots) winning the Listed Redoute's Choice S. at Caulfield

Aquis a good fit

That it was Aquis that ended up with her wasn't a total surprise given Fung's love of Domesday, who stands at its foundation farm at Canungra. But there was also a connection through Aquis Farm CEO Shane McGrath.

Girolami pointed out that McGrath was the General Manager at Eliza Park when Oregon Seal visited Bel Esprit three times.

Aquis intends to continue to race Oregon's Day for the time being, and she has been transferred to the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable where she will be given a chance to win a Group 1 race in next month's Tatts Tiara at Eagle Farm.

"Their intention is to send her around in the Tiara and see how she goes. If she gets up, good on them. We won't be saying we shouldn’t have sold her. It’s great," Girolami said.

Aquis Chief Executive Officer Shane McGrath with Chief Operating Officer, Paddy Power at the Magic Millions Sale

End of the road

With Oregon's Day now sold, Girolami's time as a racehorse owner comes to an end.

"That's it is it for me. No more horses," he said. "I'm 81 and my wife is 80, and we feel that's enough."

He'll content himself with watching Oregon's Day's progeny run around in the years to come, while Skelton's son Craig is breeding with one of Oregon Seal's other fillies, Oregon's Girl (Soldier's Tale {USA}), who has a weanling colt by Fiorente (Ire) and is in foal to Ready For Victory.

Oaks a winning way to farewell Makin

5 min read

By Bren O'Brien

Owner Paul Makin and trainer Garry Newham combined for some amazing wins with the superstar Starcraft (NZ) (Soviet Star {USA}), but Newham believes victory in the G1 Queensland Oaks on Saturday with Winning Ways (Declaration Of War {USA}) in the week after Makin's death would surpass anything that has come before.

Newham knows how much he owes Makin for the opportunity to train Starcraft, a horse of a lifetime who would win three Group 1s for him before embarking on a successful European campaign under the guidance of Luca Cumani.

"I'll never forget it, it’s what you try to achieve all your life, and it paid off," Newham told RSN.

Makin picked up Starcraft (NZ) for $110,000 via the agent Robt Dawe at the 2002 NZB Premier Sale and gave him to Newham to train in Queensland.

"He always showed quite a bit of potential, but he was a big tall gangly horse early, who didn’t know where his legs were going. As he matured and furnished into himself, he just got better and better," Newham said

Starcraft's 3-year-old campaign is the stuff of legend. Starting with a maiden win at Doomben in late November, he won six of his next seven races, ending with a thrilling success in the G1 Australian Derby at Randwick in April.

He also won the G1 Chipping Norton S. against the older horses, and as a 4-year-old won the G1 Mudgway S. under Cumani, he then claimed two additional Group 1 wins in Europe before a successful career as a stallion. He is still standing at Rosemont Stud in Victoria.

Starcraft after his win in the G1 Chipping Norton for Garry Newham

In the post Starcraft-era, Newham drifted away from training until Makin came calling a few years ago looking to get the team back together.

"I went to New Zealand training for five years and when I came back to Queensland, I didn’t like the way racing was going up here. I decided to stray away from it. I was still mixed up in racing, driving horse floats, but I got out of the training side for while," he said.

Training exclusively for Makin, after an 8-year break, Newham restarted his training career on the Gold Coast in January 2017.

At the Magic Millions Yearling Sale that same month, Makin picked up a Declaration of War filly via agent Dermot Farrington for $110,000. She was out of the imported mare Skip Along (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who had already produced the WA One Thousand Guineas winner Dreamtime Dancer (Danehill Dancer {USA}).

She is one of a handful of horses that Makin sent to Newham to race in the navy with white vee and red sleeves made famous by Starcraft and subsequently G1 Irish Oaks winner Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

The Declaration Of War filly, Winning Ways

A winning return

Winning Ways doesn't belong in the same category as those horses yet, but has built a good record, winning six of her 12 starts, including a stakes victory at the Gold Coast earlier this month.

She was without luck at her most recent start in the G2 The Roses at Doomben, finishing eighth and her trainer feels she can make an impression on Saturday.

"It was miles better than it says on paper. If she had have got clear running when she went for it, she would have gone close. I don’t know if she would have won it, but she would have been in a close photo," Newham said.

"Luck didn't go our way, and we all know how much luck you need, no matter how good a horse you've got. Without that luck, it all comes undone."

"Luck didn't go our way, and we all know how much luck you need." - Garry Newham

The 2200m will suit her a lot better than the 2000m of The Roses. She should be able to get a better position earlier and young Matty (McGillivray) who is riding her, will know her a bit better from that earlier ride."

"I do think she can win."

Her participation in the fillies' feature took on additional significance when it was confirmed earlier this week that Makin, aged 82, had passed away after a series of strokes.

"It’s been a tough week," Newham said. "We knew it was coming, because of the way he was deteriorating, and the good thing that came out of it all was that he didn’t suffer for too long and it was over and done with pretty quick."

"He was a character, a real character. You never knew what he was going to come out with next. He'd surprise you every day. He'd come up with something new. When you sat down to talk with him, if he thought he was in the wrong, he'd listen to you. He was a great mate."

"He was a character, a real character. You never knew what he was going to come out with next." - Garry Newham

The Makin colours through the Paulyn Investment ownership, will remain part of the Newham stable for a while yet, with Winning Ways one of three 3-year-olds, as well as a pair of 2-year-olds and a Frankel (GB) foal that will remain racing.

Of all the things they achieved together, Newham feels victory on Saturday, in the current circumstances, would surpass anything that happened with Starcraft.

"It would be the best," he said. "It would be better than winning the Derby."

Kelly to set up own veterinary practice

Written by Paul Vettise

Padraig Kelly is highly appreciative of the opportunities and support afforded to him by Coolmore and while it’s time to move on, he will continue to work closely with the major breeding and racing operation.

“I’ve been with them for 11 seasons and head veterinarian for the last three,” he said. “This season I will be setting up my own veterinary practice in the Hunter Valley – Padraig Kelly Equine Veterinary Services.

“I’ll continue my excellent working relationship with Coolmore and will be contracting back to do work for them.

“I very much appreciate all the support I have had from Coolmore and the opportunities they have given me to further my career.”

Padraig Kelly with Coolmore's MV Magnier

Kentucky experience

Kelly graduated from University College in Dublin in 2007 and subsequently completed a surgical internship in Kentucky at the Hagyard Medical Institute before joining Coolmore in Australia.

“I don’t come from a racing background, but during my time at college I spent my summer holidays at JP McManus’ stables.

“While I was at Martinstown Stud I grew my passion for thoroughbreds and during that time he had the great hurdler Istabraq.”

Padraig with Galileo

Istabraq was a three-time winner of the Champion Hurdle and also won four editions of the Irish Champion Hurdle for McManus, an Irish multi-millionaire and former part-owner of Manchester United.

“I’ve been very fortunate in the position I’ve had at Coolmore and as head vet oversee two other vets, two nurses and the laboratory for the breeding seasons,” Kelly said.

“I’m so grateful to the Magnier family for entrusting me to look after the greatest racehorses and stallions.

“I’ve done every stallion flight for the last 10 years and will continue that role with Coolmore. The great relationship with Tom and the team will continue.”

Best wishes

Magnier said he wished Kelly every success in the next stage of his career and was also delighted to be able to retain his services.

“Padraig’s given great service during his time at Coolmore and he’s been a vital member of the team. We’re looking forward to continuing our close association and wish him every success.”

During his Coolmore tenure, Kelly gained his post-graduate certificate in Equine Sports Management and in 2016 passed the membership exam for entry to the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS), specialising in large animal radiography.

Kelly and his fiancé Rae-Louise Farmer, a former yearling manager at Widden Stud, also operate Fernrigg Farm, just outside Denman, which they established in 2017.

“We’ve done two full yearling drafts and it’s going really well,” he said. “The feedback has been very positive and we’ve had a few 2-year-old winners already.”

Among them has been Spilt (Choisir), who claimed top honours in the Inglis 2YO Challenge at Scone earlier this month for trainer Rod Northam.

Minted success highlights stable treble

3 min read

by Bren O'Brien

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have unearthed a promising 2-year-old in Minted (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}) on a day at Warwick Farm where they trained three winners.

Minted, who is raced by a partnership of Aquis Farm, Newhaven Park, Ingham Smith Racing and G1G Racing, showed sharp improvement from his first start when ninth at Kembla Grange to lead all the way under Tim Clark and win the 1200m Press Statement @Vinery Hcp.

Purchased by Aquis for $460,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Sale, Minted is out of the mare Fashion (Encosta de Lago), a daughter of Group winner True Jewels (Brief Truce {USA}). Fashion was raced by Newhaven Park and Ben Ingham. Ingham bred this colt and he and Newhaven Park stayed in the ownership.

He defeated $800,000 filly California Salto (Fastnet Rock) by 1.8l. Dream Circle (Dream Ahead {USA}) was third, while the well-backed Mercury (Brazen Beau), the half brother to Osborne Bulls (Street Cry {Ire}) didn’t figure after enduring a wide run.

Stable representative Neil Paine was rapt with the improvement that Minted showed and sees a bright future for the colt

"He's a very nice horse going forward," Paine said. "That trip away to the provincials for his first start can work very well to bring them along as it has with him."

Minted as a yearling

The stable is also lifting expectations for Embracer (Sebring), who shrugged off his last start below- par performance to easily win the Events by ATC Plate over 1200m.

The 3-year-old, a half-brother to Star Witness (Starcraft {NZ}) and Nostradamus (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}), was beaten as a $1.10 favourite at Wyong last time, but given a comfortable ride from Adam Hyeronimus, kicked clear to beat Front Sight (Smart Missile) by 1.3l, with another 4.3l back to Undoubted (Not A Single Doubt) in third.

“He is still learning and it was good to get the result today,” Hyeronimus said. “It has just taken a couple of starts to get him to relax."

“We were able to put the blinkers on and it made a big difference.”

Embracer was a $280,000 buy for his trainers at the 2017 Easter Yearling Sale and races for a large syndicate of owners, including the Bacon family who were trackside for the win.

Embracer as a yearling

The stable treble was completed when the promising filly Statuesquely (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}) made it two wins from her first three starts when holding off the previous unbeaten Bergen (Your Song), with Charretera (Epaulette) third.

Statuesquely is raced by Gerry Harvey and is out of Fonnsagrives (Encosta De Lago), the daughter of multiple Group 1 winner Lotteria (Redoute;s Choice).

Good draw for Oaks favourite

G1 Queensland Oaks favourite Princess Jenni (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) has drawn an ideal middle barrier for Saturday's feature at Doomben.

The last-start G1 Schweppes Oaks winner retained her favouritism after coming up barrier nine in the 16-horse field. She will come in to eight should the five emergencies come out.

Impressive last-start winner of The G2 Roses winner Etana (Shamus Award) has drawn barrier 7, while Kris Lees' pair Angel Of Heaven (Redoute's Choice) (3) and Aliferous (Hinchinbrook) (13) had contrasting fortunes.

Chris Waller's hopes of a fourth win in the race were dealt a blow with all four of his fillies, Welsh Legend (Camelot {GB}) (20), Savigne (Ocean Park {NZ}) (18), Lady Cuvee (NZ) (Savabeel) (10) and Duchess Of Lennox (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) (21) drawing double-figure barriers.

Juddmonte announces Southern Hemisphere fees

Juddmonte Farm have announced its stallions will be available to serve mares on Southern Hemisphere time from their UK-based farm for the 2019 season.

Frankel (GB) will stand for £80,000 after an outstanding start to his career at stud, with 28 Group winners to date including 6 Group 1 winners. His Southern Hemisphere achievements include Group 2 Tea Rose S. winner, Miss Fabulass and the Group 1-placed Frankely Awesome.

Champion miler Kingman (Ire) will stand for £70,000, boasting eight stakes winners in his exciting first crop, including Classic winner Persian King. His first Australian weanling was recently sold at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $260,000.

The reliable Group 1 producer Oasis Dream (GB) is listed at £20,000 after enjoying two new Group 1 winners in the 2018/19 season.

Breeders' Cup Mile winner Expert Eye (GB) will be standing for £12,000, while Bated Breath (GB) is available for £5000.

All services are offered with an SLF guarantee. Juddmonte Nominations Manager Shane Horan is in attendance at the Magic Millions Nation Broodmare Sale to discuss breeding options.

New owners target G1s for mares

Several of the mares purchased out of this week's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast will aim for Group 1 victories in Brisbane over the next month.

Aquis Farm purchased Quilista (Scandal Keeper {USA}) and Oregon's Day (Domesday) on Tuesday and both will go to the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable with Quilista a late entry for the G1 Stradbroke Hcp and Oregon's Day headed to the G1 Tatts Tiara.

Chris Waller's new acquisition Eckstein (I Am Invincible), purchased by Coolmore for $750,000, will also go towards the G1 Tatts Tiara.

Quilista has been entered for the G1 Stradbroke Hcp

Jockeys sidelined

Jockeys Jason Benbow, Jean Van Overmeire and Opie Bosson were all injured in separate incidents on Wednesday.

Benbow was transported to hospital with a suspected leg fracture after falling from Postmistress (Host {Chi}) in the opening race at Sale.

Van Overmeire was kicked by another horse while riding out on to the track at Warwick Farm track work.

He has been stood down from riding until at least Saturday with scans set to determine the extent of the damage.

Bosson was taken to hospital suffering a concussion following a fall at Te Rapa on Wednesday.

Tough fight for Stradbroke spots

The battle for spots in the $1.5m G1 Stradbroke Hcp at Eagle Farm next month has intensified with the order of entry revealing several leading chances still sit outside the 18-horse field.

There are 41 horses left in the running for the Stradbroke, with Tyzone (Written Tycoon) (19th), Tactical Advantage (Bel Esprit) (22nd), Ringerdingding (Sebring) (24th), Con De Partiro (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA} (25th), Victorem (I Am Invincible) (28th) and Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) among those sweating on getting a run.

Noble Boy (Bon Hoffa) looks certain to miss the race as he is currently 37th and he will contest the Listed Hinkler Hcp instead.

Meech's return delayed

Leading Victorian jockey Linda Meech has conceded she’ll spend up to another month on the sidelines with a collarbone injury.

Meech suffered a fractured collarbone and an associated shoulder injury at Geelong on April 17. A visit to the doctor this week has revealed she will need another three to four weeks of recovery.

“It’s healing really well but not as fast as I would’ve liked,” Meech told Racing.com.

“I haven’t needed surgery or anything like that which is a good result but I’m still looking at another three to four weeks until I’m ready to come back."

Meech still leads the Victorian Jockey Premiership on 114 wins but John Allen (104 wins) is closing in fast.

Breakthrough for Sessions

Oaklands Park Stud's Sessions has secured his first racetrack winner with Comes A Time successful at Belmont on Wednesday.

Comes A Time, trained by Brett Wilkinson, won the Tabtouch Better Your Bet 2YO Plate in a photo finish to secure his sire's first-ever winner.

Sessions, a son of Lonhro who won the G2 The Shorts, stands for $5,500 (inc GST) at Neville Duncan's stud at North Jindong in WA.

Gobstopper on trial for Australian trip

Trainer Andrew Campbell is hoping a strong performance from his tough stayer Gobstopper (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) this weekend can parlay into a shot at a stakes race in Australia.

Gobstopper will run at either Ellerslie or Wanganui on Saturday with a trip to the Queensland Winter Carnival a possibility for the 2017 G2 New Zealand Cup winner.

"If he wins, and wins well, there is a race over in Brisbane on June 22 called the Tattersall’s Cup (G3),” Campbell said. “It is run over 3000m and at the end of the carnival, so I am hoping it might be a bit weaker. That’s the dream anyway."

“There is a flight next week and we could throw him on there and have one throw at the stumps. The prize will pay his way.”

Looking Ahead - May 30

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Thursday, Gerald Ryan debuts a gelding out of a Group 1 winner at Gosford, where a well-bred Godolphin filly also has her first start, while at Ballarat, an expensive Lindsay Park filly looks to break her maiden in the Vinery stud colours.

Gosford Race 2, 12:35pm AEST, Max 2YO Mdn, $35,000, 1600m

The superbly bred Chains Of Honour (Redoute's Choice) makes his debut for Gerald Ryan over the 1600m, which seems unusual for a 2-year-old, but not one who is from a G1 VRC Oaks and G1 Vinery Stud S. winner in Faint Perfume (Shamardal {USA}).

Sun Stud paid $700,000 for Faint Perfume from the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale back in 2016, carrying this colt, who races in its colours here. Faint Perfume has left three winners from as many foals to race. This gelding has shown considerable improvement through his three recent trials and should start close to favourite in this race.

Ballarat Synthetic Race 1, 1pm AEST, Champions Estate Ballarat Mdn, $35,000, 1000m

The expensive filly Manasari (More Than Ready {USA}) resumes here in the Vinery colours and looks ready to break her maiden at start number four. She showed enough with her second last start at Sale in January and her recent trial win to suggest this is a suitable race for her.

She was a $600,000 purchase from the 2017 Gold Coast Magic Millions, being out of the Group 3 winning American mare Heart Ashley (USA) (Lion Heart {USA}), who has already produced the three-time winner and stakes-placed Ameristralia (Fastnet Rock). Manasari's full sister sold for $280,000 at this year's Gold Coast Sale. Heart Ashley is also a half-sister to three other stakes American winners.

Manasari as a yearling

Gosford Race 3, 1:15pm AEST, Konami 3YO Mdn, $35,000, 1000m

The well-named Accoutrements (Exceed And Excel) is out of Darley's excellent producer Accessories (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}). She already has four stakes winners to her name, including Group 1 winners and successful stallions Helmet (Exceed And Excel) and Epaulette (Commands) as well as Pearls (Exceed And Excel) and Bullbars (Elusive Quality {USA}).

It is quite the pedigree for any debutant, particularly one contesting what looks a fairly winnable Gosford maiden. Her most recent trial was very good and she gets the services of an in-form Rachel King.
