Looking Ahead - June 5

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Wednesday, we are headlining a pair of lightly-tried youngsters with impressive pedigrees at Canterbury Park and at Ladbrokes Park we highlight the daughter of a two-time Group 1 winner.

Canterbury Park Race 1, 12.50pm, Winter Racing H., $50,000, 1550m

Discombe (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) has a deep and current pedigree as he is a half-brother to this season’s joint New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Queen Of Diamonds (NZ) (Savabeel), winner of the G2 Lowaland S. Their dam Love Diamonds (Danehill {USA}) is a sister to the Group 2 winners Viking Ruler and Kempinsky and a three-quarter sister to another Group 2 winner in Lovetrista (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). The G3 Waikato Gold Cup winner Mongolian Marshal (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) is another family member to emerge as a stakes winner this term.

A member of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team, Discombe was a NZ$150,000 Karaka purchase and has kicked off his career with two encouraging minor placings. In line with his pedigree, the 3-year-old looks sure to appreciate a step up in distance and a first win beckons.

L’Cosmo (Lonhro) is a filly that looks on the verge of opening her account for Peter and Paul Snowden. She was fifth on debut on a heavy track before Christmas and then given a break before trialling well and finished runner-up when resuming on this course.

She is a richly-bred 2-year-old, being a daughter of the G1 Canterbury S. and G1 Tattersall’s Tiara winner Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor). Her dam Crevette (Danehill {USA}) was successful three times at Listed level and is a sister to the former Hong Kong Horse of the Year and champion sprinter-miler Fairy King Prawn and half-sister to the G1 Salinger S. winner Easy Rocking (Barathea {Ire}).

Ladbrokes Park Race 2, 1.00pm, MyPunter.com H., $50,000, 1400m

It’sayesfromme (Dundeel {NZ}) is making excellent progress for Anthony Freedman and followed up a debut second with a comfortable victory at Donald. This is a step up in what is a competitive 2-year-old line-up, but the colt looks a progressive type and capable of continuing his winning roll.

A $115,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy, It’sayesfromme is a son of Vocalise (Redoute’s Choice) and she was a juvenile winner and out of a half-sister to the three-time Group 1 winner Serenade Rose (Stravinsky {USA}), also the champion 3-year-old filly of her year. Another family member is the G3 Hall Mark S. winner Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}).
