Snitzel colt shines on Day 1 of National Sale

5 min read
A $500,000 Snitzel colt helped lift the bar on what was an otherwise quiet opening day for vendors and buyers at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

At A Glance:

>> The overall clearance rate of 64.3% was an improvement on Day 1 last year, which was 62.4%

>> The overall average was very similar to 2018, at $41,256, $1 less than last year

>> The median on $30,000 was on par with what happened last year

>> The $500,000 Gerald Ryan and David Raphael paid for the Snitzel - Miss Jakeo colt was the highest price at this sale for five years

>> There were six lots over $100,000 on the day

>> The Day 1 gross was $4.83m

Ryan links up with successful family again

Baramul Stud produced the goods on Day 1, with Lot 2188, a well-bred Snitzel colt securing the clear sales-leading price, with Gerald Ryan and David Raphael going to $500,000 to secure him.

He was from a family very much in vogue after Missrock (Fastnet Rock), who is out of this colt's stakes-winning half-sister Miss Judgement (Strategic), sold for a sale-topping $2.3m at last week's National Broodmare Sale.

There are three other stakes winners from Miss Jakeo (Unbridled's Song {USA}), including G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym), who Ryan trained.

The trainer also prepared this colt's sire Snitzel, who also won an Oakleigh Plate, and given the strength of that pedigree it was no surprise to see him top the charts on Day 1. He becomes the most expensive yearling from the mare.

"He was an absolutely beautiful colt. Picked himself on both pedigree and type. He reminded me very much of Redoute’s Choice himself - that lovely balanced physical, with an attractive head on him," Raphael said.

"Gerry (Harvey) needed to give him a bit of time, which is why he was in this sale instead of January."

There were high expectations for another couple of yearlings, Lot 2147 the Not A Single Doubt colt out of a daughter of Gold Edition (Lion Hunter) offered by Lauriston Thoroughbreds, and Lot 2012, a filly by Snitzel out of stakes-winner Belle D'Amour (Jet Spur) offered by Aquis Farm, but bidding on both of those fell short of the reserve.

The second highest price on the day was the $150,000 Damien Yap paid for Lot 2174, a Dream Ahead (USA) cold offered by Macquarie Stud.

He is the first foal from city-winning mare Longchamp Belle (Charge Forward), who is from the family of Group 1 winners Excellerator (Marscay) and Artistic (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}).

International buyers strike

The international influence on the opening day was strong with 37 of the 117 lots going to buyers from outside of Australia.

Hong Kong-based Worldwide Bloodstock paid $140,000 for Lot 2136, a Kermadec (NZ) colt and Singapore's Stephen Grey paid $110,000 for a Lot 2078, a colt by Reliable Man (NZ).

The Kermadec colt is out of Indiscretions (Commands), who hails from the extended family of Group 1 winner Freemason (Grand Lodge {USA}) and was offered by Aquis Farm.

The Reliable Man colt was offered by Westbury Stud and is a half-brother to the promising Usain Bowler (So You Think {NZ}) out of Eileen (Redoute's Choice), the half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Barbaricus (Lion Hunter).

Reliable Man would end up the day's leading sire on averages (more than 3 lots), with five sold at an average of $64,000.

Ontrack for success

The top price for a filly was Lot 2098, the sister to stakes-placed Our Intrigue (NZ), by Showcasing (GB) out of Forever And Ever (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) offered by Bhima Thoroughbreds.

Gold Coast-based Ontrack Thoroughbreds paid $110,000 for the Showcasing filly, having earlier secured Lot 2066, a Foxwedge filly from Eureka Stud for $100,000. That filly is the half-sister to multiple stakes winner I'm A Rippa (Love Conquers All).

Ontrack's three purchases saw them as the day's second biggest spender, with $275,000, behind Ryan and Raphael with their one big buy.

There is considerable buzz around Newgate's Deep Field, with his first crop having produced 17 winners to date and Lot 2076. a colt offered by Riversdale, sold for $95,000 to Portelli Racing.

The top price for a yearling by a first-season sire was the $90,000 Moorillah Pastoral paid for a No Nay Never (USA) colt offered by Valiant Stud. He is out of El Shahar (Encosta De Lago), the half-sister to Group 1 winner Zip Zip Aray (Bellotto {USA}).

Unsurprisingly given it sold the top lot, it was Baramul Stud which topped the vendors' list, with four sales for a total of $640,000, clear of Westbury Stud, with 10 sales for $608,500.

“It was a sticky start to the day,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “There were a fair few pass ins which was disappointing but we gained momentum as the day went on.”

“At the end of the day we were up on last year. But we are a long way from the benchmark that we like to set ourselves.”

"We gained momentum as the day went on.” - Magic Millions Managing Director, Barry Bowditch

“From a buyer’s perspective there’s a lot of nice horses out there that have either been passed in or bought for good prices,” Bowditch added.

“I think tomorrow will be a solid day’s trade. I expect it to pick up a little and for buyers there will be great opportunities across all levels of the market.”

U S Navy Flag joins Valachi Downs' roster

3 min read
Champion European 2-year-old U S Navy Flag will stand at Kevin Hickman's Matamata property in 2019.

Triple Group 1 winning sprinter U S Navy Flag (USA) will stand at Valachi Downs in 2019, with the son of War Front (USA) to commence his season at a fee of $20,000 plus GST.

The Matamata-based stud is rapt to have secured U S Navy Flag offering New Zealand breeders a first opportunity to breed to a Champion European 2-year old and 3-year old sprinter, who also won the G1 July Cup.

“There has never been a sprinter of this elite-level stand at stud in New Zealand, let alone with the incredible pedigree U S Navy Flag possesses,” Valachi Downs General Manager Jonathan Scully said. “We are beyond delighted to offer this precocious speed sire to breeders."

Watch: U S Navy Flag winning the G1 July Cup

U S Navy Flag, who has just completed his first season to a full book of mares at Coolmore Ireland, boasts a formidable pedigree being out of the four-time Group 1 winning daughter of Galileo (Ire), Misty for Me (Ire), herself a champion 2-year-old and 3-year-old, who has also produced three-time Group 1 winner Roly Poly (USA) (War Front {USA}) and G3 winner Cover Song (Fastnet Rock).

Misty For Me is a full-sister to Ballydoyle (Ire), a winner of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, and is a closely related to Europe's Champion 2-year-old Fasliyev (USA) (Nureyev {USA}).

As a racehorse, U S Navy Flag showed both toughness and brilliance in a 2-year-old season which featured 11 starts, becoming the first horse in 35 years to win both the G1 Middle Park S and the G1 Dewhurst S., while also winning the G3 Curragh Round Tower S.

He defeated a top-class field in the Dewhurst, including eventual Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf hero Mendelssohn (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA}).

“He’s been a remarkable horse,” jockey Ryan Moore said at the time. “It was a good Dewhurst today and he was strong at the line. This is a massive feat.”

“He’s been a remarkable horse." - Jockey Ryan Moore

He then collected a third Group 1 victory at his fifth run back in his 3-year-old season, comfortably defeating the older horses in the G1 July Cup, a race won by star stallions such as Oasis Dream (GB), Anabaa (USA), Starspangledbanner and Stravinsky (USA).

He would go on to contest top-flight sprints in Australia, including The Everest and the G1 VRC Sprint Classic.

"Speed is his biggest attribute but heart is his next biggest, he never lies down and is an amazing horse," trainer Aidan O’Brien said of U S Navy Flag on his retirement to Coolmore Ireland.

Scully was recently in Ireland to inspect the son of War Front and was suitably impressed by how he had furnished as a stallion.

“I recently travelled to Coolmore to physically inspect U S Navy Flag and can describe him as the epitome of a Danzig-line sprinter. He is strong, neat and correct, the same dark-bay colour as his sire War Front and grandsire Danzig,” said Scully.

“He will add an enormous injection of high-quality speed to our broodmare population.”

He will stand alongside Zacinto, (GB) and Savile Row (NZ) in 2019.

Sokolski's Cox Plate triple-threat

7 min read

By Bren O'Brien

Seven months on from his toughest day as an owner on Cox Plate day, Brae Sokolski is contemplating a three-pronged attack on the Group 1 Moonee Valley feature in 2019.

Ahead of last year's Cox Plate, Sokolksi, who has emerged as a significant owner in recent years with around 65 horses, was contemplating whether either of the horses he part owns, Humidor (NZ) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Kings Will Dream (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}), could be capable of upsetting superstar mare Winx (Street Cry {Ire}) in her bid for her fourth victory in the race.

Post-race, Sokolksi was left shell-shocked with Kings Will Dream pulled out of the race with a fractured pelvis, while Humidor sustained a suspensory injury which looked to have ended his racing career.

Remarkably, both horses are now fully recovered, and having joined new stables after Darren Weir's disqualification, are being set for a return to the Cox Plate in 2019.

"At that point, my main concern was saving Kings Will Dream and finding a nice paddock and retirement for Humidor. Fast forward seven months and I never thought I'd be in a position for both of them being 100 per cent and arguably in the best condition they have ever been," Sokolski told RSN's Racing Pulse.

"I never thought I'd be in a position for both of them being 100 per cent and arguably in the best condition they have ever been." - Owner Brae Sokolski

Kings Will Dream's recovery has been as close to a miracle as Sokolski has seen in his time in the game. The import was genuinely 50-50 to survive in the days after the race, but nursed back to health, he is now in Chris Waller's Rosehill stables.

"There is no doubt that horse is looking better than he has ever been. He has furnished and grown and he didn't have any atrophy in his hindquarters despite fracturing his pelvis," he said.

"He was in a box for three months. He was stall-tied for two months and he couldn't move, because we couldn’t afford to put any pressure on his pelvis."

"Yet, he is in magnificent order. His attitude throughout has been incredible, and he is in pre-training now with Chris. We are moving forward to the spring carnival very bullish about his prospects."

Kings Will Dream

Having come through his period of confinement, Kings Will Dream spent time further recovering at Noorilim Park. Waller doesn’t usually pre-train his horses, but made an exception for Kings Will Dream, ensuring he keeps a close eye on him in his continued rehabilitation from what was a catastrophic injury for a racehorse.

Sokolksi sat down with Waller last week to plot out his spring campaign. The 5-year-old, a winner of six of his 14 starts, is likely to kick things off in the G1 Winx S. at Randwick on August 24.

"It's highly likely he stays in Sydney and we get some give in the track in the early part of the spring to look after his joints," he said.

"He'll come down for the G1 Turnbull S. or the G1 Caulfield S. for his final run into the Cox Plate."

Third-time lucky for fully-recovered Humidor

Humidor, twice a Cox Plate placegetter, is also on target for a third shot at the race, with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace to oversee his preparation.

Having recovered from his injury, the 6-year-old spent time with Pat Cannon before heading to Lindsey Smith's new set-up at Warrnambool, where former Weir employees Maddie Raymond and Tyson Kermond have been working with him.

"Tyson got off the horse on Tuesday and said he's the best he ever felt," he said.

"Lindsey takes him through pre-training and he’ll be with Ciaron in eight weeks."

Regular rider Tyson Kermond says Humidor is 'the best he's ever felt'

He will head to the Cox Plate along a very similar path to last year, when he kicked things off in the G2 PB Lawrence S. at Caulfield, then won the G1 Memsie S. before contesting the G1 Makybe Diva S., G1 Underwood S. and G1 Caulfield S. before his third in the Cox Plate.

The main contention is whether he starts off in the PB Lawrence or attempts to defend the Memsie S. first-up.

Verry exciting filly

Sokolski's third Cox Plate contender is likely to be G1 AJC Oaks winner Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}).

She has emerged as one of the most promising young stayers in the country, but Sokolski said that she was unlikely to go to the G1 Caulfield Cup and would instead head to the Cox Plate before a possible shot at the G1 Melbourne Cup.

"It has been the subject with rigorous debate. I caught up with Chris for lunch last week to go through all the preparations of the horses. I'd have to say, at this point and time, the Cox Plate is the number one race on her agenda," he said.

"I'd have to say, at this point and time, the Cox Plate is the number one race on her agenda." - Brae Sokolski

"Chris believes he can run her in the Cox Plate. He feels that the Melbourne Cup is still an option, so we are definitely keeping an open mind about that, but he has to work out how he prepares her for the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup giving her enough miles in her legs to go to the Melbourne Cup without taking away from her brilliance."

Verry Elleegant winning the G1 Vinery Stud S.

"It’s a real balance and if anyone is able to walk that tightrope, it’s Chris."

Bob Peters announced this week that his Group 1 winning filly Arcadia Queen (Pierro) would join Waller's stables and head towards The Everest and the Golden Eagle.

But Sokolski is adamant that the lure of the $7.5m Golden Eagle was never a temptation for Verry Elleegant, despite the fact she won the G2 Phar Lap S. over the same track and distance during her autumn campaign.

"I’ll never run in the Golden Eagle with a horse that is good enough to win a Cox Plate, I'm a purist, I want to win a Cox Plate, this is a race that is stepped in history and that has been won by the best weight for ages horses in the country for the last century," he said.

"I'm a purist, I want to win a Cox Plate." - Brae Sokolski

"Even if the prizemoney was doubled for the Golden Eagle, if I've got a horse that is good enough to win a Cox Plate, I'm running in the Cox Plate."

Everest aims for Yes Yes Yes

Sokolksi revealed that he was keen for one of his other rising stars, Yes Yes Yes (Rubick), to be targeted at The Everest.

Yes Yes Yes winning the G2 Todman S.

While Waller has an Everest slot available, so too does Coolmore, who are a shareholder in the Group 2 winning colt.

Sokolski, a young owner with a successful career as Chief Investment Officer for commercial real estate investment manager Maxcap Group, believes with his involvement in 65 horses, he is probably reaching his peak, with a determination to play with quality over quantity.

"The bottom line of it is, it is a volume game, and if you want to own some seriously good horses, and not just one or two, you are going to need to have numbers," he said.

"I'm fiercely ambitious and I'd like to think I can grow my racing interests over the next 50 years, I’d like to hope."

Waller ready for fun with new, young star

4 min read

By Bren O'Brien

Chris Waller is genuinely excited about the future of 2-year-old filly Funstar, who became the first winner for her sire Adelaide (Ire) with an impressive victory against the older horses over 1250m at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Funstar is a half-sister to Group 1 Queensland Oaks winner Youngstar (High Chaparral {Ire}) and races for the same interests. She was heavily supported on raceday off three very good trials and lived up to the hype by 3.3l.

In-form jockey Robbie Dolan sat the filly back off the strong pace and brought her with a long run, and she surged clear to defeat her stablemate Tawarat (I Am Invincible), with Classic Gaming (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}) third.

She breaks the duck for Coolmore's first-season sire Adelaide, the winner of the G1 Cox Plate, who had only had two runners to the track prior to her victory.

Waller was super impressed with the win and predicted a big future for Funstar.

"She's very smart and she has shown that in her trials as well," he said.

"She's by a good stallion in Adelaide and it would certainly suggest that distance won't be a problem for her."

"I think we’ve got a good one here." - Chris Waller

"That's why I had her ridden her like that, why would you be outside the leader on a horse by Adelaide? Obviously, she a sister to Youngstar who is a genuine Group 1 horse in her own right."

"I think we’ve got a good one here."

Waller admitted things have been a little flat around the stable since the departure of superstar mare Winx (Street Cry {Ire}), but he was genuinely excited about what Funstar could do.

"I'm tickled pink. This is the most excited I've been in about six weeks," he said.

"It was interesting running a 2-year-old against the older horses. I don’t believe in it, I don’t think they get enough weight advantage, but she has got a bright future. We’ll look after her and have a lot of fun with her."

"Who knows where she is going to get to? But I'm going home with a big smile on my face."

Funstar is the first winner for Coolmore stallion, Adelaide

Dolan was equally as impressed with the performance.

"I haven’t been riding for very long, but she's very smart I reckon," he said.

"Mr Waller was very adamant we give her a good experience on her first time around. She just did it so easy. It’s like she has done it 100 times before. She is going to be very nice I reckon."

"I'm tickled pink. This is the most excited I've been in about six weeks." - Chris Waller

Dolan said Funstar possessed a very long stride, which gives all the indications that she will improve with racing and with distance.

"She's got a very, very big stride on her, even going to the gates I had to tell her to slow down. I'm not saying how good she is going to be, but she is going to be very, very good," he said.

More joy for Sheather

The dam, Starspangled (Ire) (Danehill (USA), has been a great producer for Young-based Jack Sheather since he purchased her for $30,000 at the 2014 Sydney Weanling and Broodmare Sale.

He purchased her through his good friend John North at Bowness Stud in foal to High Chaparral, with Youngstar the resultant foal. She sold for $200,000 to Anton Koolman Bloodstock and Sheather and his wife Karen remained in the ownership.

It was the same story two years' later at the 2018 Easter Sales, when the Koolmans paid $80,000 for the Adelaide filly, with the Sheathers staying involved along with members of the Inglis family, whose colours she carries.

Funstar was an $80,000 yearling

The younger half-brother by Dissident passed in at the Classic Sale this year, while Starspangled visited Pierro last year having missed to Dundeel (NZ) the year prior.

Mark Newnham continued his terrific run with his 2-year-olds when Blazing Miss (Sizzling), also ridden by Dolan, won the earlier 2-year-old race at Canterbury over 1100m at her second start. Blazing Miss withstood a protest from second-placed Aquitaine (Exceed And Excel) of the James Cummings stable.

Waikato weanlings online

Waikato Stud's entire draft of weanlings for the 2019 season are available through the latest Gavelhouse.com online auction.

The draft of 27 will be paraded on the Matamata-based farm on June 6, 9 and 10, with x-rays for each of its entries available for viewing in the New Zealand Bloodstock online repository.

"This year we have made a couple of changes to the way we sell our weanlings and broodmares by offering them for sale through the online sale platform gavelhouse.com," Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick said.

"We have a great line-up of weanlings by proven sires that will give pin-hookers, and those looking to buy a young horse to raise and race, the opportunity to access some of our top bloodlines."

"Our aim is to offer buyers a mature, well-raised product they can take through to the next stage in their career and the horses offered will meet a range of budgets.

"The auction gives buyers the opportunity to purchase from a range of successful Waikato Stud stallions and mares."

19 winners for Better Than Ready

Lyndhurst Stud's Better Than Ready has moved into rare air with his 19th winner from his first crop.

Raging Pole won a maiden at Doomben to see his sire move two clear of Deep Field in the battle for the leading first-season stallion by winners.

Better Than Ready

It also sees Better Than Ready surpass the 2012-13 achievements of Northern Meteor, who sired 18 Australian winners (plus a Singapore winner) in his first season in 2012-13.

The overall first-season record of Lindsay Park's Without Fear (Fr) stands at 30.

At Sandown, Dissident secured his fifth winner, with the victory of Pancho.

Viddora sold

Trainer Lloyd Kennewell has confirmed that dual Group 1 winning mare Viddora (I Am Invincible) has been sold, and will be served to Southern Hemisphere time in England.

Viddora

While the likely stallion, and the buyer have yet to confirmed, she will return to the Hunter Valley after she has served her mandatory six-month quarantine period, having competed in Hong Kong.

The new buyer, to be announced in the coming days, will take the opportunity to get her in foal to a leading European stallion.

"I'm ecstatic that they’ve got her and she's got a good home for the rest of her life," Kennewell said.

Stakes performer Libran put down

Staying import Libran (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) was euthanised on the Gold Coast on Tuesday morning after suffering a career-ending injury while being prepared for Saturday's G2 Brisbane Cup.

The Chris Waller-trained galloper won the G2 Chairman's Handicap in 2016 before finishing second to Gallante in the G1 Sydney Cup. He remained competitive throughout his career with 9 wins and 9 placings from 45 career starts, and earnings of over $1.4m.

The Bostonian draws well

The Bostonian (NZ) (Jimmy Choux {NZ}) has drawn favourably for Saturday's $1.5m Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm as he aims to complete a Group 1 sprint treble.

The Tony Pike-trained 4-year-old drew barrier 10 in the full field of 18 runners but will come into barrier six if the emergencies fail to gain a start.

The Bostonian in the G1 Kingsford Smith

Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}), one of four runners for Godolphin, also came up with a midfield barrier in gate 13. Home Of The Brave (GB) (Starspangledbanner) will come from the second widest barrier after drawing 22, Viridine (Poet's Voice {GB}) comes from 11 and Encryption (Lonhro) 14.

Leading local hope Tyzone (Written Tycoon) drew barrier 12.

Brideoake charged over Princess Jenni

Racing NSW stewards have issued charges against Victorian trainer David Brideoake relating to the late scratching of Princess Jenni (High Chaparral {Ire}) from the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick in April.

Stewards have been conducting an inquiry into the late scratching of Princess Jenni, which occurred after a pre-race inspection by Racing NSW vets.

Princess Jenni

They took evidence into the matter at two separate sittings, on April 6 at Randwick and on Friday, May 24.

Brideoake has been charged under AR 254, relating to injections prohibited at certain times, and AR 249, administration of medication on race day.

"Mr Brideoake did, without the permission of the Stewards, administer and/or caused to be administered medication the horse Princess Jenni between approximately 7:45am and 11:58am on 6 April 2019 the day of and prior to Race 3 TAB Adrian Knox Stakes conducted at Royal Randwick racecourse on that day," a Racing NSW statement read.

The charges will be heard on Monday, June 17.

Full field for Derby

The G1 Queensland Derby has attracted a capacity field of 18 runners and five emergencies, including six fillies.

The Chris Waller-trained Nobu (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) holds favouritism and has drawn barrier 13. He is alongside the colt he edged out last start, Carif (So You Think {NZ}), who comes from barrier 14.

The Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie (Shamus Award), third in the recent G1 South Australian Derby, had drawn barrier five, while the two leading fillies in the race, Scarlet Dream (Sebring) and Aliferous (Hinchinbrook), have drawn out in barriers 16 and 17 respectively.

Matt Cumani's chance, Declares War (Declaration Of War {USA}), has come up with barrier 1.

Our Intrigue heads for a spell

Tony Pike will send Our Intrigue (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}) to the paddock after her unplaced run in the G1 Queensland Oaks.

The Tony Pike-trained 3-year-old has won three of her eight starts, while she was placed at Group 2 level at Ellerslie earlier in the campaign.

“She probably just came to the end of her preparation,” he said. “She’s going to head to the spelling paddock, she has been up a long time and did a good job to get into the Oaks."

“I think a couple of runs on heavy tracks just took its toll and she raced like a bit of a flat racehorse on Saturday in the Oaks unfortunately.”

Pike was pleased with her 3-year-old season and is looking forward to seeing what she can do as a 4-year-old.

“She’s a nice filly on her first preparation and I am sure she will keep for next season,” he said.

Looking Ahead - June 6

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Thursday, we check out a Godolphin filly stepping out at Seymour, look at the first foal from a Group 1 winning mare purchased by Mick Price, and examine the prospect of a Kris Lees' filly resuming at Wyong.

Seymour Race 1, 12:30pm AEST, United Insurance Group 2YO Fillies Mdn, $35,000, 1200m

Prophecies (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}) looks a typically fast and forward Godolphin 2-year-old, having shown plenty of speed in a recent Flemington jumpout. She has had a couple of hitouts ahead of her debut here and has been gifted an ideal barrier with Damien Oliver getting a rare ride in the all blue.

She is the only foal out of Phoebe (Street Sense {USA}), who was unraced and is a half-sister to Paximadia (Commands), who was a Group 2 winner. That family comes out of a European family which features the Group 1 winners Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Street Cry (Ire) (Machiavellian {USA}) and Shamardal (USA) (Giant's Causeway {USA}).

Seymour Race 2, 1pm AEST, Lloyd Sound Mdn, $35,000, 1200m

Steamboat Rock (Fastnet Rock) is the first foal out of the multiple stakes winner Fontein Ruby (Turffontein). Mick Price, who now trains with Mick Kent Jr, purchased this colt for $350,000 out of last year's Australian Easter Sale. Fontein Ruby is out of Charming Ruby (Rubiton), the three-quarter sister to dual G1 Cox Plate champ Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton) and a half-sister to the talented Group winning mare Infinite Grace (Prince Of Birds {USA}).

Steamboat Rock had a recent jumpout at Caulfield, working home nicely from back in the field suggesting whatever he does here, he will likely improve on going forward in the campaign.

Wyong Race 4, 1:50pm AEST, De Bortoli Wines Mdn, $35,000, 1350m

I'm Kate (NZ) (Savabeel) showed enough in her first campaign to suggest she shouldn’t take long to break her maiden. She has had two trials leading into her comeback race here and with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle from the inside barrier, she gets a good chance to break through for a win.

I'm Kate as a yearling

She was a $240,000 buy out of the NZB Premier Sale in 2017 and is the first foal of the Listed winner Shandream (NZ) (Pins). That's the family of stakes winner Catainer (NZ) (Centaine) and Fercertain (NZ) (Centaine).
