Extra Brut leads AusNZ exports to Hong Kong

4 min read
The resumption of racing in Hong Kong is still better than a month away, but as is the norm, there has already been and will continue to be an influx of talented Australian and New Zealand bloodstock into the SAR over the coming weeks and months.

To follow is a brief list of horses that have been recently exported to Hong Kong for the 2019/2020 racing season that commences in early September.

Extra Brut

Gelding, 3YO, Domesday x Dom Perion (Redoute’s Choice)

A $52,000 Inglis Great Southern Weanling, a year after selling for just $6,000 in utero at the same auction. Extra Brut was purchased by Brad Spicer’s Spicer Thoroughbreds for $100,000 at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and it has turned out to be money well spent.

Extra Brut

Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace for Spicer Thoroughbreds, Aquis Farm and others, the bay won four of his nine appearances, including a $10 winner of the 2018 G1 AAMI Victoria Derby, and was also a close third in the G1 Mackinnon S.

Extra Brut will start on a lofty domestic rating of 93 and will look to give Frankie Lor a second straight victory in the Hong Kong Derby next March.

Millard Reaction

Gelding, 3YO, Fastnet Rock x Miss Jakeo (Unbridled’s Song {USA})

The Toby Edmonds-trained Millard Reaction was a veteran of just three trips to the post this season, winning his first two starts at Doomben before making the trip down to Sydney, where he was just beaten in the Listed South Pacific Classic S. on the second weekend of The Championships.

A half-brother to Group 1 stakes-winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym), and Group stakes winners Miss Judgement (Strategic) dam of Group stakes-winner/multiple Group 1 stakes-placed Missrock (Fastnet Rock), Aussies Love Sport (Redoute’s Choice) and Fifth Avenue Lady (Encosta de Lago), Millard Reaction was a $220,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling purchase by Aquis and Julian Blaxland’s Blue Sky Bloodstock.

Douglas Whyte takes over the training duties in Hong Kong.

Rememba The Titans

Gelding, 3YO, I Am Invincible x Ailuros (NZ) (One Cool Cat {USA})

Rememba the Titans is the first listed produce for his dam, a half-sister to Estelle Collection (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}), whose son Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) was named Horse of the Year, champion sprinter and champion older horse in Australia in 2014. Estelle Collection was represented this season by 2-year-old filly Art Collection (Fastnet Rock), a debut second in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington.

Rememba The Titans as a yearling

Purchased in utero for $440,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Rememba the Titans was himself a $250,000 Inglis Easter yearling and will be conditioned in Hong Kong by John Size.

Godot

Colt, 2YO, More Than Ready (USA) x You Da One (Fastnet Rock)

Bred on the wildly successful cross over Danehill-line mares responsible for Group 1 winners such as Sebring, Perfectly Ready, Benicio and Prized Icon, among others, the September-foaled Godot fetched $320,000 from Team Hawkes on behalf of Alan Bell at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale.

Godot as a yearling

The bay, produced by a half-sister to Group stakes-winner Always Allison (More Than Ready) and multiple group stakes-placed Kyria (Encosta de Lago), was impressive in winning a pair of trials earlier this season, including a powerful four-length ‘victory’ at Rosehill in May.

He has joined the yard of Danny Shum.

Lenta

Gelding, 3YO, Choisir x Azardi (Desert Prince {Ire})

A $180,000 acquisition by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock out of the 2016 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, Lenta was led out unsold at that same price at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale some eight months later.

A half-brother to G2 Villiers S. winner All Legal (Al Maher) and out of a half-sister to G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile hero Glorious Days (Hussonet {USA}), multiple stakes-winner Bangalore Bullet (Hussonet {USA}) and stakes-winner & Group 1 stakes-placed Spurcent (Flying Spur), Lenta trialled four times, winning his final heat at Newcastle in May.

Dennis Yip will call the shots in Hong Kong.

Magnetic Field

Colt, 2YO, Deep Field x Jolie Bay (Fastnet Rock)

Lucky Owners Pty Ltd. went to $530,000 for this offspring from the second crop of his sire, the most expensive of eight Deep Fields sold at the 2018 Easter Sale.

Magnetic Field as a yearling

The Oct. 25 foal is a son of Group stakes-winner and Group 1 stakes-placed Jolie Bay, herself a full-sister to dual-hemisphere Group 1 winner Merchant Navy, both siblings being out of Group stakes-winner and multiple Group 1 stakes-placed Legally Bay (Snippets).

Magnetic Field will race for the Frankie Lor yard.

Move Forward

Gelding, 3YO, Sebring x Steps In Time (Danehill Dancer {Ire})

Another bred on the More Than Ready/Danehill cross, this September foal is the first produce for his dam, who defeated Sweet Idea (Snitzel) and favoured Catkins (Dubawi {Ire}) to cause a mild $8 upset in the 2014 G1 Coolmore Classic.

The $95,000 Inglis Easter graduate, who hails from the extended female family of G1 Doncaster H. hero Vision and Power (NZ) (Carnegie {Ire}), will be trained in Hong Kong by Benno Yung.
