12 min read
This weekend's Hunter Valley stallion parades will give breeders their best chance to assess the physical attributes of the new crop. We take a look at the schedule of first season sires to be paraded this weekend, ahead of their first seasons at stud.

Brave Smash (Jpn) (Tosen Phantom {Jpn})

Stud: Aquis Farm

Fee: $22,000 inc. GST

Parade Times: Friday August 23, 9:30am, Saturday August 24, 8:30am, Sunday August 25, 8:30am

Brave Smash (Jpn) is a rare commodity in that he was able to transform himself from a Japanese stakes horse into a dual Australian Group 1 winner. Purchased out of his home country by Australian Bloodstock, Brave Smash made an immediate impression, winning the Listed Chandler McLeod S. at his second Australian start and then running third in the inaugural edition of The Everest.

He returned in the autumn of 2018 and broke through for his first Group 1 success beating fellow Japanese import Tosen Stardom (Jpn) in the Futurity S. His second Group 1 win came in the spring of 2018, when he won the Manikato S. at Moonee Valley. He was placed in Group 1 company on a further four occasions, including twice by narrow margins in the G1 Newmarket Hcp.

He is one of two stakes-winners by Tosen Phantom (Jpn). He is from Tosen Smash (Jpn), who is by Japanese Horse of the Year, Tokai Teio (Jpn), and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Tosen Jo O (Jpn) (Timber Country {USA}). That is the extended family of Japanese G1 winners Daiwa Scarlet (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}) and Daiwa Major (Sunday Silence {USA}).

Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})

Stud: Darley

Fee: $22,000 inc. GST

Parade Times: Saturday August 24, 2pm

World champion sprinter Harry Angel (Ire) comes to Australia off the back of his first season at Dalham Hall Stud and expectations are high for the impact he will make in this country. Harry Angel was a winner of the G2 Mill Reef S. as a 2-year-old but it was as a 3-year-old he really made his stamp for trainer Clive Cox. A 4.5l win in the G2 Sandy Lane S. gave a portent of what was to come.

Harry Angel (Ire) | Standing at Darley

He elevated himself to a Group 1 winner in the July Cup, with a 1.25l win and backed that up with a stunning 4l win in the G1 Spring Cup at Haydock, a performance which saw him elected by a panel of international handicappers as the World Champion Sprinter of that year. He would add further Group success with his win in the G2 Duke of York S. as a 4-year-old, while he was also runner-up in the final race of his career, the G1 British Champions Sprint S.

He is considered the best son of his own Group 1 winning sire Dark Angel, while his dam Beatrix Potter (Ire) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) is a half-sister to Hong Kong Group 1 winner Xtension (Ire) (Xaar {GB}), and a three-quarter sister to G1 placegetter Wathab (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}). It's a pedigree which will appeal greatly to Australian breeders, being Danehill-free.

Justify (Scat Daddy {USA})

Stud: Coolmore

Fee: POA

Parade Times: By Appointment

It’s hard to oversell the magnitude of the only unbeaten American Triple Crown winner coming to Australia to stand his first season. As a racehorse, Justify's career lasted three and a half spectacular months, with Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert taking him from a 9.5l maiden win at Santa Anita to his win in the G1 Belmont S, where he completed that Triple Crown.

Justify | Standing at Coolmore

In between, he won the G1 Santa Anita Derby, beating Bolt D'Oro (USA) (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}) by three lengths, before he claimed the G1 Kentucky Derby, beating Good Magic (USA) (Curlin {USA}) by 2.5l. He then won the G1 Preakness S., edging out Bravazo (USA) (Awesome Again {Can}) with his final win in the Belmont a clear 1.75l margin over Gronkowski (USA) (Lonhro).

As the highest-rated son of Scat Daddy (USA), the spectacular chestnut brings a pedigree to match his performance. His dam, Stage Magic (USA) (Ghostzapper {USA}), was stakes placed and has also produced a G3 winner in The Lieutenant (Street Sense {USA}).

Kementari (Lonhro)

Stud: Darley

Fee: $33,000 inc. GST

Parade Times: Saturday August 24, 2pm

Kementari's (Lonhro) career highlight was his brilliant win in the G1 Randwick Guineas, where he won by 1.5l, and defeated four horses who either were or would become Group 1 winners. That success was part of a hat-trick of wins which also saw him win the G3 Eskimo Prince S. and the G2 Hobartville S., where he also beat the likes of Pierata and Trapeze Artist. He was also placed in four additional Group 1 races, including the Caulfield Guineas and the George Ryder S. behind the superstar Winx.

Kementari | Standing at Darley

He is the only Group 1 winning son of champion sire Lonhro to debut at stud in 2019 and hails from a strong family, being a half-brother to a Group 1 placed juvenile in Telperion (Street Cry {Ire}). His dam Yavanna (Redoute's Choice) is out of the prolific winner and Group 3 winner Wild Queen (Loup Sauvage {USA}), which is the family of G1 winning Dubai sprinter Sterling City (Nadeem).

Mendelssohn (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA})

Stud: Coolmore

Fee: $17,600 inc. GST

Parade Times: By Appointment

A US$3 million Keeneland September yearling, Mendelssohn lived up to that price tag when he claimed the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar at the final run of a 2-year-old season which also included a second in the G1 Dewhurst S. He then franked his international credentials as a 3-year-old by winning the G2 UAE Derby by 18.5 lengths in a course record time, before running second in the G1 Travers S. at Saratoga later that year.

Mendelssohn (USA) | Standing at Coolmore

There would be few, if any, stallions standing in Australia with a better-performed immediate family than Mendelssohn. Not only is he a son of one of the hottest international sire of sires in Scat Daddy (USA), he is a half-brother to leading American stallion Into Mischief (USA) (Harlan's Holiday {USA}) as well as 11-time G1 winner Beholder (USA) (Henny Hughes {USA}).

Real Steel (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})

Stud: Arrowfield Stud

Fee: $16,500 inc. GST

Parade Times: Friday August 23: 9am - 11am & 2pm- 4pm, Saturday August 24: 9am - 11am & 2pm - 4pm, Sunday August 25: 9am - 11:30am

Australian-based sons of Deep Impact (Jpn) have created plenty of interest in the Australian market. Right from his win as a 2-year-old on debut, Real Steel lived up to his name, winning or placing in five of his 10 Group 1 starts. His marquee performance came in the 2016 G1 Dubai Turf, which he won. He was also successful in Group 2 and Group 3 company in his native Japan.

Real Steel (Jpn) | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

Pedigree-wise, he brings plenty to the table beyond his father's considerable influence. He is one of three stakes-winners from Loves Only Me (Jpn) (Storm Cat {USA}), including his full sister the G1 Japanese Oaks winner Loves Only You (Jpn). Further back on the page are European Group 1 winners such as Rumplestiltskin (Ire) (Danehill {USA}), Tapestry (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Real Steel's third dam, the blue hen Miesque (USA) (Nureyev {USA}).

Santos (I Am Invincible)

Stud: Aquis Farm

Fee: $16,500 inc. GST

Parade Times: Friday August 23: 9:30am, Saturday August 24: 8:30am, Sunday August 25: 8:30am

Santos is one of just two new sons of record-breaking stallion I Am Invincible available in 2019. He comes from a pedigree stacked with precocity and speed, being a half-brother to multiple Japanese stakes winner Melagrana (Fastnet Rock) and out of a half-sister to four stakes-winners including Mutawaajid (Redoute's Choice) and Fatoon (Snadee {USA})), the dam of Group 1 winner Fat Al (Al Maher). The page, which also features champion Shaftesbury Avenue (Salieri {USA}), is completely clear of Danehill.

Santos | Standing at Aquis Farm

As a racehorse, Santos was placed in a Listed Breeders' Plate at his first start and would go on to win a G2 Skyline S. as well as a Pierro Plate in the autumn before competing against Australia's best juveniles in the G1 Golden Slipper S.

Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})

Stud: Coolmore

Fee: $24,750 inc. GST

Parade Times: By Appointment

The recent passing of Japanese supersire Deep Impact has put even more focus on his sire sons and there will be four standing in Australia this season, including G1 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior, who travels to Jerrys Plains for the first time in 2019. He boasts an imposing pedigree, being out of champion European 2-year-old filly Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a family that already includes G1 winners Promise To Be True (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Saxon Warrior (Jpn) | Standing at Coolmore

Saxon Warrior added more Group 1 glory to that family when he claimed the G1 Racing Post Trophy S. at his third start, defeating Roaring Lion (USA) (Kitten's Joy {USA}) and completing an unbeaten 2-year-old season. He then returned a Group 1 winner as a 3-year-old with his success in the 2000 Guineas over the mile at Newmarket, where he comfortably defeated Tip Two Win (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and subsequent G1 Investec Derby winner Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}).

Showtime (Snitzel)

Stud: Arrowfield Stud

Fee: $11,000 inc. GST

Parade Times: Friday August 23: 9am - 11am & 2pm- 4pm, Saturday August 24: 9am - 11am & 2pm - 4pm, Sunday August 25: 9am - 11:30am

Showtime has the honour of becoming the first and only son of Arrowfield's three-time champion Australian stallion Snitzel to stand at the iconic stud, which is quite a recommendation. A stunning colt, he competed at stakes level through his four-start 2-year-old season. His first black-type success followed in the G2 Bill Stutt S. before claiming another Group 2 at weight-for-age level in the PB Lawrence S. He was also placed in the G1 Futurity S. and G1 All Aged S.

He has Group 1 quality in his pedigree too, being a full brother to G1 Galaxy S., winner Sweet Idea, and a half to the stakes-winner Rush (Charge Forward). His stakes-placed dam Flidais (Timber Country {USA}) is out of the top racemare Electronic (NZ) (First Norman {USA}), who was a multiple Group 1 winner.

The Autumn Sun (Redoute's Choice)

Stud: Arrowfield Stud

Fee: $77,000 inc. GST

Parade Times: Friday August 23: 9am - 11am & 2pm- 4pm, Saturday August 24: 9am - 11am & 2pm - 4pm, Sunday August 25: 9am - 11:30am

It is with a sense of timing that The Autumn Sun enters stud duties in 2019, as it is the first time in 20 years that his legendary sire Redoute's Choice won't be on Arrowfield's roster. The baton for the Redoute's dynasty couldn't be in better hands. As a racehorse, he was just about without fault, beaten just once in an amazing nine-start career which featured eight wins, including five at Group 1 level.

The Autumn Sun | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

He ticked all the boxes on the track, winning the G1 JJ Atkins S. as a 2-year-old and then returning to win two of Australia's most significant stallion-making races, the G1 Golden Rose S. and the G1 Caulfield Guineas, both in contrasting but equally spectacular fashion. He then returned in the autumn to cap his short but sensational career with three more wins, including the G1 Randwick Guineas and the G1 Rosehill Guineas. His Timeform rating of 126 was the equal of that of his mighty sire.

He brings an amazing international pedigree with him, being out of one of the Aga Khan's best families. His dam is the unraced mare Azmiyna (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the half-sister to champion European galloper and now successful stallion Azamour (Ire) (Night Shift {USA}) as well as G2 winner Arazan (Ire) (Anabaa {USA}).

Trapeze Artist (Snitzel)

Stud: Widden Stud

Fee: $88,000 inc. GST

Parade Times: By Appointment

In terms of Australian sprinters, Trapeze Artist brings everything you could ever want on his resume ahead of his first season at Widden Stud. He is a four-time Group 1 winner, claiming the stallion-making G1 Golden Rose S. by a record margin of 4.5l and then returning as an autumn 3-year-old to win the G1 TJ Smith S., breaking the race record set by the superstar Black Caviar (Bel Esprit). He followed that up with a track record win in the G1 All Aged S. After running second in Australia's richest race, The Everest, as a 4-year-old, he then won the G1 Canterbury S. in yet another track record.

Trapeze Artist | Standing at Widden Stud

A record-breaking racetrack career is backed up by an imperious Australian pedigree. He is the highest-rated horse by three-time Australian Champion sire Snitzel, a sire line that of course includes fellow Champion stallions Redoute's Choice and Danehill (USA).

His dam, Treppes (Domesday) is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Crawl (Dr Grace {NZ}) as well as stakes-winner Old Man (Dr Grace {NZ}). Group 1 winners Boardwalk Angel (Bletchingly), Coogee Walk (NZ) (Success Express {USA}) and Distill (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}) are part of the extended family.

Written By (Written Tycoon)

Stud: Widden Stud

Fee: $24,750 inc. GST

Parade Times: By Appointment

Written By was a powerful and precocious juvenile, winning hist first four starts, including his 2.5l success in the 2018 G1 Blue Diamond S. In his first defeat, in the G1 Golden Slipper, he was the first colt home. He returned to be a stakes-winning 3-year-old claiming the G3 Blue Sapphire S. and running a close fourth in one of the best recent editions of the G1 Coolmore Stud S.

Written By | Standing at Widden Stud

He is just the second Group 1 winning son of Written Tycoon to stand at stud in Australia and being out of Tobougg (Ire) mare Yau Chin, he is the only one to be completely Danehill-free. It makes him a great outcross match for so many Australian mares.
