Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
On Tuesday, a couple of expensive yearling purchases have our attention at Gosford while at the Pakenham meeting we take a closer look at a son of the great Scat Daddy (USA) who will make his first public appearance.
Gosford Race 1, 12.50pm, Broadwater Insurance Maiden, $35,000, 1600m
High-priced yearling Maybach (More Than Ready {USA}) looks poised here to go one better after a bold bid for glory when runner-up at Newcastle last time out. In typical Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott fashion, the 4-year-old made the running and was worn down late. Adam Hyeronimus takes the reins again and from a handy gate they have plenty in their favour.
Maybach as a yearling
A $1.3 million Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy, Maybach is a brother to the G1 Golden Slipper S. winner and successful sire Sebring and a half-brother to the G2 Ajax S. winner Pureness (Tale Of The Cat). Their dam Purespeed (Flying Spur) is a half-sister to the G2 San Domenico S. winner Surtee (Memento {USA}).
Gosford Race 2, 1.25pm, ITI (NSW) Maiden Plate, $35,000, 1200m
Orbis Bloodstock went to $500,000 to secure Impudens (I Am Invincible), who is the first foal to race for Ready To Rule (USA) (More Than Ready {USA}). She is a sister to the stakes winner and Group 1 performer Grace And Power (USA), the dam of the G1 Darley Classic winner Delectation (Shamardal {USA}). It is also the family of the North American Group winners Gamay Nor (USA) (Harlan’s Holiday {USA}) and Apart (USA) (Flatter {USA}).
I Am Invincible, sire of Impudens | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud
Trained by Kris Lees, Impudens finished third at Warwick Farm in his only appearance last season. He was spelled and has trialled three times since, winning his latest 1000 metre heat at Gosford earlier this month. Brenton Avdulla has been booked for the ride.
Pakenham Race 3, 2.30pm, Backcare & Seating Maiden, $35,000, 1200m
Yulong Base (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA}) is an interesting runner for Yu Long with the North American import making his first appearance. He hasn’t been to the trials, but is in safe hands with Peter and Paul Snowden and will be ridden by Jye McNeil.
The ill-fated Scat Daddy, sire of Yulong Base
The now 4-year-old was a $300,000 Fasig Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale graduate and is a half-brother to two winners. Their dam Bailzee (USA) (Grand Slam {USA}) was a multiple winner and stakes placegetter and is out of the G2 Keeneland Beaumont S. winner Golden Gale (USA) (Summer Squall {USA}). The pedigree also features the Group 2 performer Sway Away (USA) (Afleet Alex {USA}).
