Memsie S.

Race Summary:

A perfect barrier was used to full advantage by jockey Dean Yendall aboard the game Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt).

They purred along close to the pace before taking control 150 metres from home and fought off all-comers to win in style.

So Si Bon (So You Think {NZ}) continued his good form this preparation by taking second money and the favourite Alizee (Sepoy) ran home strongly from back in the field for third.

Pedigree Notes:

Scales Of Justice was a $180,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale purchase and is a son of the unraced Beymatilla (Umatilla).

Also the dam of the black type performer Cruyfforme (Johan Cruyff {GB}), the dam is out of a sister to the Listed Wylie H. winner Duke Abbey (Lord Seymour {Ire}).

It is also the family of the G3 Standish H. winner King Hooks (King Charlemagne {USA}) and the G3 Stewards’ H. winner Present Arms (NZ) (Guns Of Navarone {Ire}).

San Domenico

Race Summary:

Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) jumped from barrier one to settle in third spot and once rider Tommy Berry had found clear air the race was over.

The Team Hawkes-trained colt dashed clear to make an impressive seasonal debut and sound a warning to his fellow 3-year-olds.

The hot favourite Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) had every chance, but couldn’t live with the winner in the straight and Anaheed (Fastnet Rock) boxed on gamely for third.

Pedigree Notes:

Exceedance is out of the Listed Proud Miss S. winner Bonnie Mac (NZ) (Thorn Park) and she is a half-sister to the Group 3 winners Upham (NZ) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Intimate Moment (NZ) (Dubawi {Ire}).

The youngster was a $180,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale purchase for Vinery Stud.

There is also an international flavour to the pedigree with the North American black type winners No Dinero (USA) (Lord At War {USA}) and Calendar Girl (USA) (Elusive Quality {USA}) members of this family.

McNeil S

Race Summary:

A lack of early speed allowed Super Seth (Dundeel {NZ}) to keep the leaders well within his sights and drew alongside to challenge 200 metres from home.

The colt asserted his superiority under jockey Mark Zahra to win for the third time in his four-start career.

Stablemate King Of Hastings (Ilovethiscity) was a reluctant pacemaker and he dug deep to take second with Sebrakate (Not A Single Doubt) third and should have finished closer with a trouble-free run.

Pedigree Notes:

Super Seth is a half-brother to the dual Listed winner Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom {USA}) and was a $280,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale buy.

He is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Salutations and she is a daughter of the G2 Yallambee Classic winner Toast Of The Coast (Rory’s Jester).

It’s also the family of the G2 Autumn S. and G3 Sir John Monash S. winner Oak Door (Commands).

Caulfield, G3 Moet & Chandon Cockram S., 1200m, $160,000

Race Summary:

Pippie (Written Tycoon) took the next step in an exciting career, leading all the way and justifying her $2.05 favouritism.

Ridden by Ben Melham, the 4-year-old speared forward from a midfield gate and dominated the race from the front. She won by a length and a half from Spanish Whisper (Lope de Vega {Ire}), with Sylvia’s Mother (Snitzel) third.

The John and Chris Meagher-trained Pippie has now had six starts for four wins and a placing. This was her first stakes win.

Pedigree Notes:

Bought for $60,000 at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Pippie is the 28th individual stakes winner for sire Written Tycoon.

Pippie is the first foal to race for the six-race-winning mare Coupe Express (Ne Coupez Pas {USA}), who is a half-sister to the stakes performer Timely Truce (Brief Truce {USA}).

The third dam is a half-sister to Merry Ruler (The Carpenter {USA}), who won the G2 Hobartville S. and G2 Phar Lap S. and placed in seven other black-type events. He was also fourth in the G1 Epsom H.

Caulfield, G3 Everest Series Heath 1100 S., 1100m, $160,000

Race Summary:

Crystal Dreamer (Stratum) delivered a $41 upset, capitalising on a perfect run behind the front-running Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi {Ire}) and surging past that rival in the straight.

Gytrash (Lope de Vega {Ire}) unleashed a potent finishing burst from third-last, but Crystal Dreamer was out of reach and held on by half a length. Gytrash was second, with Ball Of Muscle just behind in third.

Crystal Dreamer was ridden to victory by Damian Lane for trainers Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra. Owned by Contract Racing & Breeding Pty Ltd, the 7-year-old has now won 11 of his 28 starts.

Rosehill, G3 Ming Dynasty Quality, 1400m, $160,000

Race Summary:

Nine years ago, Murray Baker crossed the Tasman with the Listed Champagne S. winner Lion Tamer (NZ) (Storming Home {GB}), who won the Ming Dynasty en route to a superb win in the VRC Derby.

There is the potential of a repeat this year with the Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Quick Thinker (So You Think {NZ}), who added the 2019 Ming Dynasty to his victory in the Champagne S. at Ellerslie in April.

Baker and Forsman were unsure about the heavy track, but Quick Thinker mastered the conditions in a powerful come-from-behind performance. He swept to victory by two lengths, with Aspect Ratio (Declaration of War {USA}) second and Reformist (Dissident) third.

Raced by a big group of owners headed by OTI Racing, Quick Thinker has now had three starts for two wins and a second.

Pedigree Notes:

Quick Thinker is by So You Think (NZ), who is now the sire of 256 winners from 436 runners including 19 at black-type level.

The second dam is a half-sister to the prolific broodmare Kensington Gardens (NZ) (Grosvenor {NZ}), dam of Group 1 winners Blackfriars (Danehill) and Larrocha (Danehill) and three other stakes winners.

Rosehill, G3 Iron Jack Premier’s Cup, 1900m, $160,000

Race Summary:

A sodden track proved to be ideal for Wu Gok (Sebring), who recorded his sixth win from 10 starts in heavy ground.

Rider Tommy Berry settled in third position behind the front-running Wolfe (Jpn) (Novellist {Ire}) and Come Play With Me (Blackfriars). Berry made his move at the home turn, cutting the corner and sneaking through the inside of that pair to take the lead.

Wu Gok kicked clear, maintaining his advantage over Come Play With Me to win by a length. Chris Waller trained all of the first five horses home, with the first pair followed in by Carzoff (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}), So You Win (So You Think {NZ}) and Savacool (NZ) (Savabeel).

The Hermitage-owned Wu Gok is now the winner of eight of his 31 starts.

Pedigree Notes:

One of 55 stakes winners for the high-class stallion Sebring, Wu Gok was a $120,000 purchase at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Wu Gok is out of Lipari (Redoute’s Choice), who placed in the Listed Morphettville Guineas. Wu Gok is one of three stakes winners for the mare, alongside the G1 Australian Derby winner Levendi (Pierro) and the G3 National S. winner Marcel From Madrid (Sepoy).

The second dam is Tully Thunder (Thunder Gulch {USA}), who won four races including the G1 Australasian Oaks and the Listed Oaklands P.

Caulfield, Listed ZircoDATA Heatherlie S., 1700m, $140,000

Race Summary:

In just his third Australian start, Super Titus (GB) (Dansili {GB}) made a black-type impact with a bold performance at Caulfield.

Ridden by Jye McNeil for David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, the 6-year-old raced in midfield before swooping four-wide around the home turn to challenge for the lead. Super Titus took control just inside the last 200m and went clear, winning by three-quarters of a length from the fast-finishing placegetters Captain Cook (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Etymology (New Approach {Ire}).

Super Titus has now had 15 starts for four wins and three placings. Prior to relocating to Australia, he won races at Leopardstown, Wetherby and York under the name Titus.

His first two Australian appearances produced a 13th at Bendigo on March 30 and a last-start third at Flemington on August 10.
