Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
On Saturday, we have found a pair of well-related maiden contenders to follow at the Newcastle meeting while at Tatura a filly from a well-performed family looks to be a gilt-edged chance to run up to her pedigree.
Newcastle Race 2, 1.14pm, Easy Payroll Global Maiden, $35,000, 900m
Regimental Band (I Am Invincible) is a daughter of Lilliburlero (Redoute’s Choice), who boasts a race record to go with her pedigree. She won four races including the G3 Triscay S. and is a daughter of the G1 Australia S. and G1 Lightning S. winner Regimental Gal (General Nediym). Lilliburleo’s sister also produced the G2 Pago Pago S. winner Souchez (Lonhro).
Regimental Band
Trained on the course by Kris Lees, Regimental Band followed up a debut second last season with a runner-up finish in the Listed Woodlands S. behind the now star filly Libertini (I Am Invincible). With that form line it will be a surprise if she can’t open her winning account against what looks to be a modest line-up.
Newcastle Race 3, 1.49pm, Reward Hospitality Maiden, $35,000, 1400m
Godolphin’s Kyanite (Shooting To Win) hasn’t raced since he finished fourth at Kembla Grange in April in what was his second appearance. The chestnut has been given four trials this time around and has showed steady improvement with a most recent second at Warwick Farm.
Shooting To Win, sire of Kyanite
Kyanite is bred to be well above average and is a half-brother to the Group 3 winners Tessera (Medaglia d’Oro {USA}) and Montsegur (New Approach {Ire}) and their dam Chatoyant (Flying Spur) was successful four times up to 1100 metres. She is a half-sister to the G1 Myer Classic winner Bonaria (Redoute’s Choice) and the G3 Sweet Embrace winner Legally Bay (Snippets), who produced the multiple Group 1 winner and exciting young sire Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock).
Tatura Race 1, 12.51pm, Cheap As Chips Maiden, $23,000, 1100m
Boreas (Medaglia d’Oro {USA}) is the first foal to race for the multiple stakes winner Gybe (Fastnet Rock) who is a half-sister to the two-time Group 1 winning champion New Zealand 2-year-old Anabandana (Anabaa {USA}). Under the second dam is the North American Group 3 winner Hessonite (USA) (Freud {USA}) and she is a half-sister to the dam of the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner King’s Rose (Redoute’s Choice), who was also placed at the elite level three times in Australia.
Boreas as a yearling
Prepared at Lindsay Park, Boreas has showed a taste of the family ability at the trials, winning at her only appearance at Wodonga earlier this month. She has an ideal draw and rider Patrick Moloney should be able to give the well-bred filly every chance to succeed at the first time of asking.
