Caulfield, G1 Ladbrokes Sir Rupert Clarke S., $500,000, 1400m

Race Summary:

Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie {Ire}) was ridden a treat by Declan Bates and after leading early they settled in a handy spot.

The 5-year-old loomed ominously to challenge 250 metres from home and forged clear to give his jockey and trainer Daniel Bowman their first taste of Group 1 success.

Age Of Chivalry (NZ) (He’s Remarkable {NZ}) was prominent throughout and he boxed on gamely for second with Widgee Turf (Turffontein) coming home well from the back for third.

Offered by Donnybrook Estates, Begood Toya Mother was bought by Bowman for $280,000 at the Adelaide Yearling Sale in 2016.

He is out of Lady Of Helena (NZ) (Kaapstad {NZ}), successful in one minor event, and of her nine foals to race, seven have been winners.

Lady Of Helena is a half-sister to the G1 Canterbury Guineas and G1 Waikato Draught Sprint winner Western Red (NZ) (Spectacular Love {USA}) and the family also includes the G1 Hong Kong Derby winner Great Success (NZ) (Zamazaan {Fr}) and the multiple Group winner Elegance (NZ) (Decies {GB}).

Caulfield, G3 Ladbrokes How Now S., $160,000, 1200m

Race Summary:

Godolphin mare Manicure (Exceed And Excel) and her jockey Rachel King were each competing at Caulfield for the first time, and they made a winning start.

Breaking from a wide gate over 1200 metres, King angled Manicure across into a perfect position just behind the leaders, with cover from the strong wind.

In the straight, Manicure showed a ferocious turn of foot to charge to a clear lead, racing to victory by a length and a half from Angelic Ruler (Universal Ruler) and Dawn Dawn (All Too Hard).

The hot favourite Pippie (Written Tycoon) was the big disappointment in the race, setting the pace but dropping out in the straight to beat only one runner home. Jockey Ben Melham said he was concerned about her action in the off-front leg.

Pedigree Notes:

Manicure is one of 162 individual stakes winners for champion sire Exceed And Excel, whose overall total now stands at 1394 winners from 1994 runners.

Manicure’s dam is the Lonhro mare Trim, who won three races including the G3 Research S. and the Listed Red Roses S. She also placed in the G2 Light Fingers S. and G2 Champagne Classic.

Trim is a full-sister to Stubborn, the dam of last week’s upset G1 Makybe Diva S. winner Gatting (Hard Spun {USA}). Second dam, Firm (Night Shift {USA}), won the G3 Smoke-Free SA S. and placed in another four black-type events.

Caulfield, G3 Malvern Bendigo Bank Foundation Cup, $160,000, 2000m

Race Summary:

Brimham Rocks relished the extra distance in the G3 Foundation Cup at Caulfield today, making a long sustained run from midfield and proving too strong for So You Win and Sikandarabad over the concluding stages.

The son of Fastnet Rock appreciated the quality conditions of the race, saluting for the first time in over 700 days after finding the line nicely under WFA conditions in the G2 Chelmsford Stakes.

With his win in the race formerly known as the Naturalism Stakes, Brimham Rocks is exempt from the ballot in the Caulfield Cup and is in with a light weight chance with only 52kg on his back.

Michael Walker wasn't afraid to produce Brimham Rocks early saying “He’s a good out-and-out stayer so I took it to them quite early because I knew Chris Waller would have him fit and ready to go,”

Brimham Rocks has shorted to $31 with most corporate bookmaker for the G1 Caulfield Cup which will be run at Caulfield on October 19.

Pedigree Notes:

Brimham Rocks notched up Fastnet Rock’s second group winner for the season and 149th stakes win with his win in the G3 Foundation Cup at Caulfield today.

The northern hemisphere-bred gelding is out of a stakes-placed daughter of Authorized (GB), a half-sister to Group 3 winner Oh Goodness Me (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who finished third in the Irish One Thousand Guineas.

Brimham Rocks was a 340,000 guineas purchase by Chris Waller Racing from the 2017 Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale.

Caulfield, Listed Aquis Jim Moloney S. for Pinchapoo, $140,000, 1400m

Race Summary:

I Am Eloquent progressed from restricted company at Geelong to claim her first stakes win in the LR Jim Maloney Stakes at Caulfield today over 1400 metres.

Jockey Stephen Baster gave her the perfect run and when she was produced, she showed a good turn of foot to win from Observed and Deserved who finished second and third respectively.

She will now attempt 1600m for the first time in the G1 Thousand Guineas to be run at Caulfield on October 12.

Her trainer Natalie Young, who trains in partnership with Trent Busuttin thinks they've found the key to her, saying post race “It’s been five weeks between runs and we’ve always known she’s better when kept fresh,”

The stable are confident that she will make the grade in the Thousand Guineas and plan to go straight there, keeping the filly nice and fresh.

I Am Eloquent is the daughter of I Am Invincible and she became his 48th stakes winner with her win the the LR Jim Maloney Stakes.

Her dam, Choice Words (Choisir) won the Listed Wenona Girl Quality over 1200m at Warwick Farm. She is from unraced Flying Spur mare Verbose. She is from the family of multiple Group 1 winner Jolie’s Halo (Halo {USA}).

I Am Eloquent was a $220,000 purchase from the 2018 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Morphettville, Listed Tokyo City Cup, $100,000, 1800m

Race Summary:

Single Handed appreciated the extra distance today in the LR Tokyo City Cup over 1800m at Morphettville, fighting off Charossa and Wasabi Bob in a good tough effort to win.

He graduated from a fast finishing BM70 second to win in stakes company and improve on his already impressive race record, making it 4 wins from just 10 race starts.

Paul Gatt gave him the perfect ride, trailing the leaders in third just one away from the fence. After hitting the front a long way from home, he proved too strong over the concluding stages.

He looks a progressive stayer who will be competitive in better races over the Spring Carnival.

Race Summary:

Godolphin filly Soothing (Lonhro) pulled off a stunning win in the Listed WH Wylie H. Despite being almost out of shot, Raquel Clark didn't panic and rode the mare to a visually impressive win from well back.

The margin was 1.8l over the Anthony Freedman-trained Gift Of Power (NZ) (Power), with a further 2.5l to third-placegetter Schilldora (Artie Schiller).

A last start second in the G3 Toy Show, this is the first stakeswin for Soothing.

Pedigree Notes:

Soothing became Lonhro’s first stakeswinner of the new season when take out the Listed Wylie Stakes. Out of Bel Esprit mare Dreamy, Soothing is related to Black Caviar (Bel Espirit) and All Too Hard (Casino Prince) with second dam Song of the Sun (Desert Sun) a three-quarter sister to Helsinge.
