While he continues to work closely alongside his Rosehill-based father, leading trainer Gerald, the 2-year-old trade has become more of a focus with a consignment of 13 to go under the hammer for Blake Ryan Racing by a range of proven sires and stallion newcomers.
“Dad had always prepared some for clients and then when I was out at Platinum Park we did a draft under their banner, that was the first one I prepped, and since then I’ve sold under my own name,” he said.
“The first year I had four in Melbourne, that was the year Inglis’ Riverside Stables was still being built, and last year I sold nine and this year before scratchings I had 16.
“It started off as a bit of a hobby and a way to get into the market place and it’s grown from there with a lot of people I’m consigning for now. I’ve got shares in most of the horses myself as well.

“This is obviously my biggest draft yet and the best I’ve taken. There’s some really nice horses among them.”
A colt that Ryan has particularly high hopes for is Lot 124, a chestnut son from the first crop of Real Impact (Jpn) and the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Only Roses.
“I loved him as a yearling and paid decent money for him. His mother is a half-sister to The Inevitable so that page is going really well and happening at the right time for us,” Ryan said.
“He’s a lovely horse and breezed in 10.23s and does everything right. He’s a highlight for sure.”
Purchased at the Inglis Classic Sale for $75,000, the colt is also a half-brother to the winner Game Of Thorns (Animal Kingdom {USA}).
“The Written Tycoon I’m doing for 2K Thoroughbreds is a lovely colt and ran the quickest of my draft,” Ryan said. “He’s got the best attitude of any colt you’d ever see he’s done everything right from day one.”

A $175,000 Classic buy, Lot 114 is out of Night Train (Commands) who was successful three times over 1200 metres and is from the family of the G3 Carbine Club S. winner and G1 Thousand Guineas runner-up Permacious (Danzero). The colt breezed up in 10.22s.
“The Headwaters sold really well at the Gold Coast so I hope that continues and we’ve got one who is a really good type,” Ryan said.
Lot 173 breezed up in 10.26s is a son of Sunset Coast (Dubleo {USA}) and she is a half-sister to the G1 Cox Plate and G1 Australian Guineas and sire Shamus Award. The colt was a $30,000 Classic buy.
“There’s a really nice Hinchinbrook colt there and they’re not making any more of them. They go really well around Asia so hopefully there’s a lot of interest in him,” Ryan said.

A $40,000 Classic graduate, he is a half-brother to three winners with their dam Khepri (NZ) (Faltaat {USA}) a half-sister to the G2 Wakefield Challenge S. winner Kapsdan (NZ) (Kaapstad {NZ}) and the family of the stakes winning sprinter Wyndam Glory (Rory’s Jester). He will be sold as Lot 83 and breezed up in 10.25s.
The draft will also include sons of Sepoy (Lot 4), Dissident (Lot 16), Ready For Victory (Lot 63), Hallowed Crown (Lot 66), Akeed Mofeed (GB) (Lot 93), Domesday (Lot 105), Nostradamus (Lot 106), Rubick (Lot 121) and Super One (Lot 125).
“I reckon we’ve got a horse for most budgets and if the market’s there we should find them all a home,” Ryan said. “Everything is in place so if all the buyers turn up we’ll hopefully have a really exciting sale.”
