Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
On Sunday, we zero in on the chances at Geelong of a maiden contender, who produced an encouraging first-up effort. At Dubbo, we have found a debut runner from a strong black type family and a 3-year-old whose effortless win at his only appearance puts him in the spotlight.
Geelong, Race 3, 2.10pm, Charles Rose Parisienne Maiden, $23,000, 1335m
The Jason Warren-trained Earl Of Kendal (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is a half-brother to the multiple winner and G3 Cockram S. runner-up Le Societe (Anabaa {USA}). They are out of the Listed New Zealand St Leger winner Ritzy Lady (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).
Tavistock (NZ), sire of Earl Of Kendal (NZ)
It’s also the family of the Listed Debutante S. winner Clever Zoe (NZ) (Pompeii Court {USA}), who ran second in a G1 Lightning H., with international flavour added by the South African Group winners Hancock Park (NZ) (Pompeii Court {USA}) and her daughter Park Lane (SAF) (Eliodor {SAF}). Earl Of Kendal was a strong debut third at Mornington and it’s reasonable to expect him to be more of a force to be reckoned with this time, both in terms of experience and fitness.
Dubbo, Race 3, 3.05, Daily Liberal Maiden, $22,000, 1110m
Hawklist (Purrealist) is from a well-performed Group winning family and that adds to the confidence in his first-up chances. He is a three-quarter brother to the G1 Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur and the G3 Spring S. winner Devil Hawk.
Purrealist, sire of Hawklist
His pedigree also features the G3 Tesio S. winner Oregon Seal (NZ) (Oregon {USA}) and her stakes winning progeny Oregon’s Day (Domesday), Talent Show (Jeune {GB}) and Oregon Spirit (Bel Esprit). Hawklist has had a couple of quiet trials to prepare him and he has the added benefit of jumping from the inside gate.
Dubbo, Race 6, 5.00pm, McDonald’s Dubbo & Wellington H., $22,000, 1110m
Conspirator (Crowded House {GB}) gave an inkling of his talent when he won a trial on this course and on his return to debut he was well-fancied and gave no cause for concern with a runaway victory. The ease of that win strongly suggested he can make his mark in a higher grade.
The chestnut is a son of the unraced Snitzel mare Bellasonic and she is out of a half-sister to the Listed Colonel Reeves S. winner and Group performer Zedavite (Zedative). It is also the family of the G2 Emancipation S. winner Hec Of A Party (Hector Protector {USA}).
