Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
On Sunday, we’re firstly off to Hawkesbury where a colt from Brad Widdup’s stable and a promising Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly are top of our list while at Bendigo we are expecting a bold showing from an expensive filly with Team McEvoy.
Hawkesbury, Race 2, 2.35pm, J & G Excavations & Asphalting H., $35,000, 1100m
Deepfield’s Raine (Deep Field) brings a speedy pedigree to the table here and one that the colt can put to good use at the first time of asking. He has steadily improved through his early education and placed at his latest trial outing for trainer Brad Widdup.
Deepfield’s Raine as a yearling
He is a son of the unraced Cleo’s Raine (Redoute’s Choice) and she is a half-sister to the dual Group 3 winner Egyptian Symbol (Stratum) and Strathmore (Fastnet Rock), a Group 1 placegetter in Hong Kong. Their dam is the former champion New Zealand sprinter and G1 Railway H. winner Egyptian Raine (NZ) (Desert Sun {GB}) and the family of the multiple Hong Kong black type winner Egyptian Ra (NZ) (Woodborough {USA}).
Hawkesbury, Race 3, 3.10, AFPA Building & Livamol H., $35,000, 1100m
Just Field (Deep Field) looked well above average last season when she posted a debut victory at Muswellbrook and then did well to run fourth in a Listed event behind the well-performed Libertini (I Am Invincible).
Just Field as a yearling
She was given a break by Team Snowden and returned to finish fourth at Warwick Farm and will surely strip a fitter and more competitive filly here. A $650,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy, Just Field is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Granny Red Shoes (Not A Single Doubt) with their dam Shoboard (Show A Heart) the winner of the Listed Keith Mackay H. and the family of the G1 Otaki-Maori WFA S. winner Star Satire (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}).
Bendigo, Race 1, 1.05pm, Smartline Maiden Plate, $35,000, 1000m
Trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy haven’t sent Who Runs The World (Zoustar) to any public trials, but the stable has a good first-up strike rate and there’s plenty in this filly’s pedigree to have confidence that she will make a strong showing on debut.
Who Runs The World as a yearling
She was a $460,000 Gold Coast purchase with her dam Thurlow (Sebring) a talented mare in her racing days with a brace of stakes wins. She is a daughter of the Listed Canterbury Belle S. winner Princess Emmy (NZ) (King’s Chapel) and the pedigree features the G1 Queensland Oaks winner Travel Light (NZ) (Bellissimo {Fr}) and the Listed winner and G1 Queen of the Turf S. runner-up Illuminates (Strategic).
