Sebring x Miss Rose De Lago (colt)

Lot 545 - Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

TDN AusNZ: Why was the mare chosen to see the particular stallion?

Breeders, Barry & Jan McRostie: "Upon retiring Miss Rose De Lago we had a number of stallions on the shortlist. Ryan McEvoy had done some analysis on her pedigree and was keen to see her visit Sebring who was in fact a stallion we had in mind. I wanted to find a proven stallion with nice size particularly for her first foal. Sebring fitted that bill and his success with Encosta De Lago mares was really taking off so we were excited to go that way with her. Since then it’s been fabulous to see the emergence of superstar sprinter Aethero in Hong Kong who is of course bred on the exact cross."

TDN AusNZ: What was the foaling down like?

Katherine Steman, Assistant Stud Manager, Widden Stud: “Obviously with maiden mares you take all the necessary precautions but thankfully ‘Rose’ never gave us a moment’s worry. The foaling was very straightforward, in fact she foaled spot on her due date and the young colt was on the suck almost immediately."

TDN AusNZ: What was the horse like as a weanling?

Rob Hamilton-Cowan, Weanlings, Widden Stud: “Rose was in one of our first groups to be weaned. By the time this process came about he had become quite independent and I think he was probably ready for some freedom! I remember he was one that quite liked his own space and he used to rip around the paddock with a mate when you came in for a feed run. We bring all our weanlings through the yearling barn for a week or two as education orientation. He was a little pushy at the start but worked it out very quickly – he has a good brain which helps our job!”

TDN AusNZ: How is the horse handling prep so far?

Zoe Bayliss, Yearling Manager, Widden Stud: “Rose’ has handled the preparation beautifully in the lead-up to the 2020 Magic Millions sale. I like a colt that keeps improving in condition and muscle despite the workload and that’s what Rose has done. He’s really thriving which is a great sign for when the time comes he goes into training. He’s an impressive type and I’m looking forward to his last few weeks here on farm at Widden before we depart for the Gold Coast."
