Looking Ahead - January 3

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Friday, we are keen on the chances of a pair of maiden contenders at Canterbury Park from the stables of Peter and Paul Snowden and Chris Waller while at Cranbourne we’re suggesting a 3-year-old with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace is worth following.

Canterbury Park, Race 1, 6.15pm, Mirvac Residential Plate, $50,000, 1250m

Untamed (Pierro) was a $450,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy and is a half-brother to two winners with their dam the unraced Fastnet Rock mare She’s A Wildcat. She is a half-sister to the G1 William Reid S. winner and successful sire Foxwedge and his stakes winning sister She’s a Fox.

Untamed as a yearling

There’s also a strong international flavour to the family with the presence of the G3 Fairmount Derby winner and Group 1 performer Count The Time (USA) (Regal Search {USA}). Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, Untamed finished fourth in his first trial appearance and was successful in his second on this track to emphasise his readiness to make a winning debut.

Canterbury Park, Race 2, 6.45pm, The Agency Real Estate H., $50,000, 1250m

Zing (Zoustar) is a half-sister to five winners, including Crafty Irna (Starcraft {NZ}), who has the G3 Adrian Knox S. and multiple stakes placings on her CV. Their dam Zirna (NZ) (Deputy Governor {USA}) was a highly talented race mare who won the G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. and was successful multiple times at black type level in Singapore.

Zing as a yearling

Trained by Chris Waller, Zing was a $120,000 buy at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and she performed well at the trials before finishing fifth on debut on this course last month. With the benefit of that race day experience she appeals as a sharp improver.

Cranbourne, Race 3, 7.30pm, Core Protective Group Maiden, $35,000, 1400m

Court Deep (Deep Field) finished a sound fifth at Wangaratta on debut and made late ground after going back from a wide gate. He has again drawn a tricky barrier, but in a modest line-up and with a race day outing on his side the 3-year-old appeals as a strong chance in the hands of John Allen.

Court Deep as a yearling

Trained by the in-form pair of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Court Deep boasts a speedy pedigree and is a son of the unraced Court Flying (Flying Spur). She is a half-sister to the G2 Stan Fox S. winner and G1 Caulfield Guineas placegetter Court Commands (Commands) and the family of the Listed Lee Steere S. winner Lusaha (More Than Ready {USA}).
