Preferment (NZ) x Vuela (filly)
Lot 952 - New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale
TDN AusNZ: Why was the mare chosen to see the particular stallion?
Patrick McDaid, breeder: "It occurred the other way around actually. When Preferment was first paraded at Brighthill Farm, Nick King mentioned that he had a selection of mares available for lease that suited Preferment. It had been a lifelong goal of mine to breed a racehorse, so along with my cousin Paddy, we took the plunge.
In selecting a mare, choosing a family that was successful in, and familiar to, the Australian market was key. Vuela (by the top broodmare sire Anabaa) was the clear choice, and on type she suited Preferment. Vuela is part of the Kendayla Park broodmare band where Russell and Robyn Rogers have done a magnificent job of raising our filly, Lily."
TDN AusNZ: What was the foaling down like etc?
Patrick McDaid, breeder: "Lily became the first Preferment foal born at Brighthill in early September. The foaling went smoothly and she was up and about quickly, Vuela was a lovely mother. After a few days they both returned to Kendayla where she stayed until yearling prep time.
Just before she foaled, I created a Twitter account for Lily to keep a record of her life as she grew (@IAmLilyTheFilly)."
TDN AusNZ: What was the horse like as a weanling?
Patrick McDaid, breeder: "Up until weaning, Lily was quite shy, staying close to her mother. Once weaned however, she really developed physically and personality-wise. She had always been a filly with good strength, both in the chest and hindquarters.
She became the boss of her paddock; independent but she always enjoyed the attention of visitors."
TDN AusNZ: How is the horse handling prep so far? Does it have a nickname? Particular traits/personality? What sale is it heading to? What Lot number?
Patrick McDaid, breeder: "Lily started her prep at the start of December and adapted really well to what is quite a change for all yearlings. The feedback from Scott Eagleton at Seaton Park is that she has a good brain on her, is sensible and picks things up quickly. She has taken the prep in her stride which hopefully stands her in good stead for the sales. She is having a couple of days in the paddock before heading to Karaka as Lot 952.
Fillies and mares are the star performers in Lily’s family, so hopefully she follows in their hoofprints. These include Group 1 winners and performers such as Rostova, Imananabaa and Miss Bowie and more recently Manikato S. placegetter Anaheed."
