Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
On Wednesday, we check out a couple of very well-related fillies on debut at Warwick Farm for Anthony Cummings and John Thompson, and then head west to see a half-brother to two stakes winners have his first start.
Ascot, Race 3, 5:09pm AEDT, Amelia Park Plate, $30,000, 1000m
Samsurian (Snippetson) makes his debut for Robert and Todd Harvey and is out of the very good producing mare Sambar (More Than Ready {USA}), who has had four winners from four to the track including the Group 3 winners Samovare (Savabeel) and Samizdat (Not A Single Doubt). It is the extended family of Group 1 winners Denman (Lonhro) and Dark Eclipse (Baguette) as well as stakes-winners Nevet (Zeditave), Press The Button (Encosta De Lago) and Rio Carnival (Hussonet {USA}).
Samsurian as a yearling
Samsurian cost his trainers $75,000 at last year's Magic Millions Perth Sale and has had four trials leading into his debut, winning two of them.
Warwick Farm, Race 1, 1:35pm AEDT, Exceed And Excel @ Darley Hcp, $50,000, 1000m
Anthony Cummings steps out Attract (Sebring) for her first start and she boasts a pedigree that catches the eye. She is the sister to the Group 2 winner Pretty In Pink out of the stakes-placed mare Total Attraction (Nadeem), who hails from the family of Group 2 winning mares Infinite Grace (Prince Of Birds {USA}) and Fontein Ruby (Turffontein) as well as dual G1 Cox Plate hero Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton).
Attract as a yearling
Purchased by Anthony Cummings and 2K Thoroughbreds at the 2019 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale she has had a couple of recent trials. In the first she found trouble early on, got a long way out of her ground and passed just one runner, but in her second, she worked home sweetly for fifth to be beaten just 1.2l.
Warwick Farm, 2:45pm AEDT, Race 3, Hyland Race Colours Plate, $50,000, 1200m
Haven (I Am Invincible) steps out for the first time for John Thompson in the Waratah Thoroughbreds colours having had a couple of changes of stable before her debut and having impressed with a recent trial win at Randwick.
I Am Invincible, sire of Haven | Standing at Yarraman Park
A homebred, she is out of the five-time winner Gamba (Elusive Quality {USA}), the half-sister to G1 Tatts Tiara winner Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor). They are both from the multiple stakes-winner Crevette (Danehill {USA}), the sister to Hong Kong champion Fairy King Prawn (Danehill {USA}) and half-sister to G1 winner Easy Rocking (Barathea {Ire}).
