Looking Ahead - March 13

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, a lightly-raced maiden and a debut runner have caught our attention at the Kembla Grange meeting while an expensive filly with an impressive sprinting pedigree looks one to keep a close watch on at The Valley.

Kembla Grange, Race 1, 1.50pm AEDT, TAB Odds & Evens Maiden, $40,000, 1300m

Devan (Deep Field) possesses a speedy pedigree and one that can be put to winning use here for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden. The chestnut was a trial winner at Randwick last month before he resumed at Newcastle where he finished runner-up on a heavy track. On a firmer surface the 3-year-old can go one better.

Devan as a yearling

Passed in at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Devan is a half-brother to the two-time black type winner Eximius (Exceed And Excel) and their dam Allegra (Dehere {USA}) won twice up to 1200 metres. She is a half-sister to the Listed Ken Russell Classic winner and Group 2 performer Cat D’Antibes (Tale Of The Cat {USA}) and the family of the G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Mossfun (Mossman).

Kembla Grange, Race 2, 2.25pm AEDT, Canadian Club Maiden, $35,000, 1600m

Classic Kingdom (Pierro) is on debut here for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and can make an immediate impact in the hands of Brodie Loy. He has had a couple of trials to ready him and has the breeding to suggest he will be well served by the distance.

Classic Kingdom as a yearling

A $140,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, Classic Kingdom is a son of the unraced In The Future (Redoute’s Choice) and she is a half-sister to the G2 Silver Slipper S. winner and sire Domesday. Their dam is a three-quarter sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and successful sire Xaar (GB) and the G1 Dubai Duty Free winner and sire Cityscape (GB) also appears on the pedigree page.

The Valley, Race 1, 6.30pm AEDT, Ladbrokes Back Yourself Plate, $60,000, 1000m

Luiselli (Written Tycoon) was a $380,000 Gold Coast buy and is a half-sister to two winners with their dam the Fastnet Rock mare Pinova. She is a half-sister to the G2 Schillaci S. winner, multiple Group 1 placegetter and sire Star Turn.

Luiselli as a yearling

Further speed in evident in Luiselli’s background with the presence of the G1 Salinger S. winner Ancient Song (Canny Lad). Trained by Team Hawkes, the filly was unplaced in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate before a break and can star in a much easier assignment on her return.
