Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we’re keen on the chances at Coffs Harbour of a couple of lightly-tried maiden prospects from the stables of Allan Denham and Kris Lees. We’re also expecting an impressive pedigree to be to the fore from a Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained debutante at Geelong.
Coffs Harbour, Race 3, 2.25pm AEDT, Elite Ted Showcase Maiden, $30,000, 1215m
Sethlans (Lonhro) has placed twice in a brief career and will resume from his new quarters at Wyong with Allan Denham taking over the training of the gelding. He finished in the money on debut last preparation and from the inside gate he looks poised to go close to a breakthrough success.
Lonhro, sire of Sethlans | Standing at Darley
A half-brother to the G2 Great Northern Guineas winner Knight’s Tour (Reset), Sethlans is a son of Hestia (GB) (Machiavellian {USA}), who won twice in Ireland. She is a half-sister to the G2 Royal Ascot Ribblesdale S. winner Flying Cloud (Ire) (Storming Home {GB}) and the family also includes the multiple Group 1 winner and leading sire Pierro.
Coffs Harbour, Race 5, 3.40pm AEDT, Save A Buck Showcase Maiden, $30,000, 1415m
Kumana (Animal Kingdom {USA}) is a half-brother to a pair of winners and their dam Lieserl (Magic Albert) was successful on two occasions up to 1200 metres. She is a sister to the G2 Royal Sovereign S. winner Master Harry and to the dam of the G1 Stradbroke H. winner and sire Under The Louvre.
Kumana as a yearling
A $50,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, Kumana has been taken along patiently by trainer Kris Lees and in his only appearance the chestnut raced on the pace at Tamworth and boxed on well to finish fifth. He’s sure to have derived benefit from that experience and a step up in distance can bring out the best in him.
Geelong, Race 1, 1.30pm AEDT, bet 365 Odds Drift Protector, $35,000, 1121m
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Lorne (Redoute’s Choice) will be the first foal to race for Lifesaver Lady (More Than Ready {USA}) and she won on five occasions up to 1100 metres. She is a half-sister to the G3 Kindergarten S. winner Anise (General Nediym).
The late Redoute's Choice, sire of Lorne
Their dam Pimpinella (Flying Spur) is a winning three-quarter sister to the former Hong Kong Horse of the Year Fairy King Prawn (Danehill {USA}), whose sister Crevette was a stakes winner and produced the dual Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor), and a half-sister to the G1 Salinger S. winner and sire Easy Rocking. Lorne hasn’t been to any official trials, but on pedigree alone deserves serious consideration.
