Looking Ahead - April 12

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we believe a pair of first-timers from Bjorn Baker’s Warwick Farm stable can make impressions on debut while at Mornington we’re keen on a filly having her first start for Phillip Stokes.

Mudgee, Race 1, 12.40pm AEST, Lions Club Maiden, $20,000, 1100m

One Last Fight (Snitzel) is a half-sister to the stakes-winner Cantonese (Redoute’s Choice) and to the dam of the G1 Australian Guineas winner Alligator Blood (All Too Hard). They are out of Kylikwong (Red Ranson {USA}), who won on two occasions and was three times Group 1 placed.

She is a sister to the former Australian Horse of the Year and multiple Group 1 winner Typhoon Tracy and to the dual stakes-winner Red Element. Trained by Bjorn Baker, One Last Fight has won her only trial to give a sound indication she can give a bold sight on debut.

Mudgee, Race 2, 1.15pm AEST, Mudgee Florist Maiden, $20,000, 1100m

Baker also looks to have a strong winning chance here with Spirit World (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}), who was a NZ$250,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale purchase. A sister to the multiple winner Ocean Essence (NZ), she is a daughter of Our Essence (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), who was a two-time winner.

Spirit World (NZ) as a yearling

She is a half-sister to the G1 Australian Derby placegetter Now Voyager (Last Tycoon {Ire}) and the family of the G1 Australian Oaks winner Round The World (NZ) (Sea Anchor {GB}). Spirit World has been well schooled at the trials and won the latest of them at Hawkesbury to indicate her readiness to start her career on a top note.

Mornington, Race 2, 1.10pm AEST, Neds Bet Back, $20,000, 1000m

Medician Miss (Street Boss {USA}) is a half-sister to the G3 Red Anchor S. winner and G3 Zeditave Plate runner-up Galaxy Pegasus (War Pass {USA}) with their dam the winning Galileo (Ire) mare Medician Star. Her second dam is a half-sister to the breed-shaping stallion Storm Cat (USA).

Medician Miss as a yearling

A $150,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, Medician Miss is prepared by Phillip Stokes and she has had a quiet trial to ready her for this. From an inside gate and with Damien Thornton in the saddle, the youngster looks set to give a decent account at the first time of asking.
