Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we have settled on three leading maiden chances at Terang with a filly poised to take advantage of a drop in class and two lightly-tried 3-year-olds who we are expecting to go close to breaking through.
Terang, Race 1, 12.40pm AEST, Bet365 2YO Maiden, $31,500, 1000m
The lightly-tried Wild Cherry Road (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) looks ideally-placed here to shed her novice tag for trainer Dean Krongold. The filly was unplaced in her first two outings in stakes company before she was a last-start third at Bendigo where she led and was run down late.
Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) sire of Wild Cherry Road
She is the only foal to have raced out of Mistress McDowell (Canny), who is a half-sister to the dam of the North American Group winner Skye Diamonds (USA) (First Dude {USA}). Under the second dam is the two-time Group 1 winner He’s No Pie Eater (Canny Lad) and the family of the champion sire Redoute’s Choice.
Terang, Race 2, 1.20pm AEST, Teran Co-Op Maiden, $31,500, 1850m
Tralee Rose (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) was a NZ$50,000 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale purchase and she has made a bright start to her career for trainer Symon Wilde. She made ground well for fifth on debut at Geelong and then again came home well to finish runner-up over a mile at Bendigo. Another step up in trip here can see her go one better.
The late Tavistock (NZ), sire of Tralee Rose (NZ)
The filly is a daughter of Star Of Tralee (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), a winner and stakes placed, and she is a half-sister to the former champion 3-year-old filly and three-time Group 1 winner Serenade Rose (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}). It is also the family of the G1 Stradbroke H. winner Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}).
