Looking Ahead - April 22

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we’re kicking off with a well-related Chris Waller-trained filly who is resuming at Canterbury Park where a stablemate on debut also looks to have a golden chance to make an impact. At Bendigo, we fancy a Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-prepared first-timer from a family of Group-winning sprinters.

Willinga Panache (Sebring) finished fourth in her only appearance at Randwick on Boxing Day and that race has been a handy form guide. The winner Return With Honour (Fastnet Rock) has since been Group placed and the third placegetter Damaged (Exceed And Excel) won his next start.

Prepared by Chris Waller, Willinga Panache has had a trial to prepare her for her return and has a pedigree to back her claims. She was a $410,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy and is out of a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner, former Australian Horse of the Year and sire Dissident.

Waller also looks to have a top prospect on debut here with Sauvestre (Hinchinbrook), who cost $500,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast. He is a half-brother to the multiple winner and stakes performer The Chairman (High Chaparral {Ire}) and they are out of the unraced Dezign (Zabeel {NZ}).

She is a half-sister to the G3 Ladies’ Day Vase winner Star Fashion (Street Cry {Ire}) and they are daughters of the multiple Group 2 winner and Hong Kong Group 1 placegetter Elegant Fashion (Danewin). Sauvestre has been a trial winner and from the inside gate the colt will get every chance to star.

Elementary Holmes (More Than Ready {USA}) hasn’t been sent to any official trials by trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, but the colt hails from a high-class family with an abundance of speed within its ranks. He will be the first foal to race for the Redoute’s Choice mare Disseminate.

She is a half-sister to the G1 Newmarket H. winner and sire Wanted whose half-brother Shrapnel (Charge Forward) won the G2 Yallambee Classic before entering stud. Their dam Fragmentation (Snippets) was a black type winner and under the second dam is the G2 VRC Sires’ Produce S. winner De Lago Mist (Encosta De Lago).
