US$2.3 million Mia Mischief continues roll in Carousel

Stonestreet Stables’ US$2.3 million (AU3,601,110) purchase of Grade I winner Mia Mischief (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}) at last year’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale continued to pay off on Saturday when the filly won the Carousel S. her first stakes in her new owners colours.

Running over 1600 metres, Mia Mischief raced three paths off the rail just behind the leading Amy’s Challenge (USA) (Artie Schiller {USA}). The pair looked like they’d put on a show down the straight in front of the empty stands as they set down for a duel but Mia Mischief quickly showed she was the better of the two as she pulled away. The 5-year-old crossed the line 4.5l in front with the rest of the field a further 3.25l behind Amy’s Challenge.

Bred by Spendthrift Farm, Mia Mischief is by their flagship stallion Into Mischief and bred on the Speightstown (USA) cross that has also produced two other Group winners from seven runners.

Mia Mischief’s dam Greer Lynn (USA) (Speightstown {USA}) is a half-sister to Grade III winners Sing Baby Sing (USA) (Unbridled’s Song {USA}) and Roll Hennessy Roll (USA) (Hennessy {USA}) and Listed winners Value Plus (USA) (Unbridled’s Song) and Majorbigtimesheet (USA) (Carson City {USA}).

Last year’s Champion Sire in the U.S., Into Mischief currently has a 100 per cent strike rate in Australia with three winners from three runners. The stallion is soon to be represented by even more runners with 13 mares bred to the stallion in Kentucky and imported to Australia in 2017 and five in 2018.

Well-Related Basquiat Newest Winner For American Pharoah

The well-bred Basquiat (USA) became another debut winner for American Pharoah (USA) on Saturday when the colt raced to a 1.5l victory for the Triple Crown winner.

Happy to settle behind the leaders through much of the 1400 metre dirt race, Basquiat took a while to get into stride for Irad Ortiz, Jr. when asked to pick up the pace. Once they swung into the straight, Basquiat found his legs and put on an impressive showing to gallop away from the field with second placed Ashiham (USA) (Tapit {USA}) the only runner within 3.5l of him.

American Pharoah (USA) | Standing at Coolmore

From the family of G1 Doncaster H. winner It’s Somewhat (USA) (Dynaformer {USA}), Basquiat’s second dam is smart producer Alidiva (Ire) (Chief Singer {Ire}). Also the granddam of It’s Somewhat, Alidiva is dam of One Thousand Guineas winner Sleepytime (Ire) (Royal Academy {USA}) and two other Group 1 winners.

Standing at Coolmore Australia since 2017, American Pharoah’s first Australian-bred foals hit the track later this year.

Bolt d’Oro Half-Brother Impresses

Making his first start since finishing third in last year’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy, Grade 3 winner Global Campaign (USA) (Curlin {USA}) lit up social media on Saturday when winning his return at Gulfstream Park.

Running over 1400 metres, the 4-year-old was quickly away and raced near the back of the field early on. The colt had his work cut out for him with 5l to make up in the far turn but showed an impressive turn of foot when going five wide in the stretch and quickly battling for the lead. Jockey Chris Landeros looked confident in the final 150 metres when putting away the whip and giving Global Campaign an easy hand ride as they took command and won by 1.5l.

One of three graded stakes winners from three runners out of Globe Trot (USA) (A.P. Indy {USA}), Global Campaign’s year-older half-brother Bolt d’Oro (USA) (Medaglia d’Oro {USA}) spent his first southern hemisphere season at Spendthrift Australia last season with his first foals arriving shortly.
