Victorian trainer spreading forces across three states

4 min read
Victorian trainer and former Group 1-winning jockey Brent Stanley will spread his forces far and wide on Saturday with black type representatives in Sydney and Adelaide and a runner closer to home at Flemington.

Stanley has come full circle with the talented mare Dyslexic (Foxwedge), who runs in the G3 Emirates Park Dark Jewel Classic at Rosehill and has done particularly well since her last visit there when third in the G3 Hawkesbury Crown.

Under his Cloud 9 Thoroughbreds banner, Stanley purchased Dyslexic for $140,000 out of Newgate Farm’s draft at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

“I bought her as a yearling and then she went to the Hawkes stable when I got suspended,” he said. “She stayed there to see if we could get a stakes win with her, but it didn’t quite work out and now she’s back here to try and tick that box on Saturday.”

Dyslexic as a yearling

Dyslexic won three times for John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes and was a multiple placegetter at both Group 2 and 3 level before returning to Stanley’s Sutton Grange stable.

She was a trial winner before a midfield finish when resuming in the Listed Manihi S. at Morphettville and most recently was an unlucky third behind Sweet Scandal (Sepoy).

“She’s going really well and her last-start she was a little bit stiff. She drew inside and jumped out well and then came back a couple of lengths further than we would have liked,” Stanley said. “She got held up, but ran through the line really strongly.”

James Innes Jnr rode Dyslexic last time out and he will retain the mount in the Dark Jewel and has also been booked for stablemate Monitizing (Turffontein) in the Listed Coolmore Denise’s Joy S.

“She’s racing well, she’s coming back strongly. Whether she’s at that grade yet or not is the question mark,” Stanley said. “There are simply no races for her down here in Melbourne, no 3-year-old fillies’ races over a 1000 or 1100 metres.

“They are all over further and no stakes races so we’ll try and tick that box with some black type.”

Monitizing kicked off her current campaign with her maiden victory at Bendigo in April and returned there earlier this month to easily win a BM64 sprint. Both of her successes have been over 1000 metres.

Centaurea start

Meanwhile, Stanley’s prayers have been answered with Cryptic Jewel (NZ) (Savabeel) coming off the ballot with the scratching of Supre (High Chaparral {Ire}) to gain a start in the Listed AAMI Centaurea S.

She has finished in the money in each of her last two appearances over a mile and the step up to a middle distance is expected to enhance her chances.

“She’s just been terribly unlucky, just the way her races have been run and the distances and that’s just what has been available,” Stanley said.

“The 2030 metres against her own sex really should suit her, I think she’ll be very hard to beat.”

Stanley also fancies the chances of stable stalwart Violate (Sebring) when he steps out in the Seppelt Wines H. at Flemington, where he has a smart record.

Violate was unplaced when resuming at Caulfield, but is expected to produce a significantly-improved display.

Nathan and Brent Stanley with jockey Noel Callow

“He just flowed along behind them, which he can do sometimes when he gets back on the inside. I’ve got him going as well as I’ve had him for a long time and his last couple of pieces of work have been sensational,” Stanley said.

“I’ve kept him for this race at Flemington and his 1400 metre form there is very good, he’s won a couple of stakes races there. There will be no excuses on Saturday, if he races up to his best he should be able to beat them.”

Violate is a past course and distance winner at Flemington of the G3 Shaftesbury Avenue H., in which he beat the subsequent G1 Futurity S. winner Streets Of Avalon (Magnus) and the Listed Tontonan S.

Meeting and venues cut from NZ racing calendar

4 min read
Next season’s revised New Zealand racing calendar includes a reduction of both meetings and venues, most significantly Avondale is among them, with six fixtures to be held on the all-weather track currently being constructed at Cambridge.

The implications of the coronavirus pandemic on the TAB and the wider industry has forced an immediate overhaul of the original draft racing calendar for 2020/21 and proposes a reduction of total meetings, including 43 fewer thoroughbred fixtures.

Venues not to host meetings in the revised calendar include Avondale, Te Teko, Waipa (Te Awamutu), Gisborne, Wairoa, Waipukurau, Blenheim (Waterlea), Motukarara, Waikouaiti and Omakau.

Executive Chair of the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA) Dean McKenzie said the racing calendar was a critical driver to enable the recovery of New Zealand racing and an essential part of the overall reform program being led by RITA and the three racing codes.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on racing and accelerated the need for significant change across all levels of the industry.

“The leaders of New Zealand racing have repeatedly talked over decades about change, but not been courageous enough to address the critical need for venue intensification.

“Repeated reports on the industry, including most recently by John Messara, as well as the industry-led future venue plan have identified that there were too many racing venues. This was a commercial drain on limited industry resources. COVID-19 leaves us with no other choice but to act.

“COVID-19 leaves us with no other choice but to act.” – Dean McKenzie

“Over the last two years, the racing codes have undertaken considerable work identifying their optimal future venue footprint. The impact of COVID-19 has created greater financial need to accelerate the implementation of the codes’ plans.”

A key principle of the proposed changes is more meetings closer to where the horse population is trained, with resulting increased intensification at venues.

Avondale will not host any fixtures

“The racing calendar generates the revenue for the Codes that ultimately end up in the stakes that drive domestic racing,” McKenzie said.

“The draft calendar means that some venues will miss out on racing licenses, and that is regrettable, but COVID-19 makes servicing almost 60 venues simply unsustainable and unappealing to the owners and participants who travel the length and breadth of New Zealand for meetings.

“Maximising the total returns to all of racing is the goal of the racing calendar. With revenue likely to be further challenged next year, we have to cut costs and deliver the most efficient program of racing possible.”

“With revenue likely to be further challenged next year, we have to cut costs and deliver the most efficient program of racing possible.” – Dean McKenzie

The proposed meeting numbers in the draft calendar represent a 17 per cent decrease since 2009, from 328 to 273. During the same period there has been a 17 per cent decline in individual starters, from 5826 to 4812.

“Our dwindling foal crop, which has dropped 28 per cent since 2005, has resulted in a smaller pool of horses and even before COVID-19 the reduction in races was not keeping pace with the number of horses available to race,” New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Chief Executive Officer Bernard Saundry said.

“Nationally the average field size has fallen from 11.12 to 10.49 in 2019 and will have declined further by end of 2020.”

Bernard Saundry

McKenzie said this week’s announcement by the Government of two synthetic racing tracks didn’t feature in the draft racing calendar for 2020/21 as it was unlikely these would be built in time to support racing this season.

“The draft calendar includes six meetings at the Cambridge synthetic track, which is currently being developed.

“Having another two world-class synthetic tracks operational in the near future will provide a further opportunity to review our racing venue footprint and ensure the industry delivers on the ambition laid by the Racing Minister to make racing great again.”

A draft racing calendar has been released to racing clubs with consultation on the draft closing on June 15. It is expected a final calendar will be released on July 3, prior to the commencement of a new year of racing on August 1.

Sargent hoping to go one better in fillies' feature

3 min read

Written by Paul Vettise

John Sargent is following a path with Stick ‘Em Up (Dundeel {NZ}) that so nearly earned the stable a major reward 12 months ago and the Randwick horseman is now hoping to take care of unfinished business at Morphettville.

Sargent has identified Saturday’s G3 TAB South Australian Fillies Classic as the ideal race to suit Stick ‘Em Up’s deep reserves of stamina, as he did a year ago with Miss Moana (NZ) (Uncle Mo {USA}) and was so nearly fully justified.

Miss Moana made all the running in the 2500 metre staying feature only to be run down in the shadows of the post by Moor Gait (Fiorente {Ire}), who started at odds of better than 200-1.

Moor Gait (green silks) winning last years' Oaks with Miss Moana on the inside rail (black silks)

“Miss Moana ran in the Oaks, won at Newcastle and was then just beaten. We’ve got the same jockey again and Stick ‘Em Up won the same race at Newcastle so hopefully we can go one better this time,” Sargent said.

Stick ‘Em Up, who will be ridden on Saturday by Todd Pannell, also ran in the G1 Australian Oaks and finished a game fifth after rider Jason Collett looped the field to take her to the front 1000 metres from home.

Stick ‘Em Up

“I don’t know what Jason was doing, but anyway the owners want to get some black type with the filly and this looks ideal with Queensland out of the equation,” Sargent said.

“This looks a good race for her to get some black type, she’ll stay all day. As a 4-year-old, she will be up against the imported horse and all the big boys so some black type now would be great for the owners.

“She went on Monday to David Hayes and he’ll look after her, he’s got three in the race. She’ll go to Murray Bridge and stay there.

“This looks a good race for her to get some black type, she’ll stay all day.” – John Sargent

“It’s a bit tough when you can’t send staff, but we’ve got a pretty good system and David sends me horses when they come here.”

Stick ‘Em Up was purchased out of Lime Country Thoroughbreds’ draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $110,000 by Duncan Ramage, who manages the filly on behalf of owners Westcode.

She has a rich staying pedigree and is out of Shoot Fer Love (Ferocity), who is a half-sister to the four-time Group 1 winner Shoot Out (High Chaparral {Ire}) and the family of the G2 Craiglee S. winner and G1 Adelaide Cup runner-up Native Jazz (NZ) (St Hilarion {USA}).

Stick 'Em Up as a yearling

“Duncan has got quite a few with me at the moment and he comes in during the week and has a look at them all. We’ve had a few winners lately so we’ve got a good thing going on,” Sargent said. “They are mainly stayers.”

Also under Ramage’s management are She’s So Savvy (So You Think {NZ}) and All Things (So You Think {NZ}), who both won at Newcastle last week and Come Along (NZ) (Power {GB}) was successful at Canterbury Park.

She’s So Savvy has now won twice from a handful of starts and All Things broke his maiden at just his fifth appearance while Come Along has won four races.

“Stick ‘Em Up is still a bit weak and she’ll be a lovely horse next year, she’s still six months away really,” Sargent said.

Black type preview: Morphettville & Gold Coast

Gytrash in pole position

Morphettville, G1 The Furphy Goodwood, $400,000, 1200m

Gytrash (Lope De Vega {Ire}) is a model professional with eight wins from his 18 starts and only once has he missed a top three spot. He is a Group 1 winner and resumed with victory in the G3 RN Irwin S. to top him off perfectly for this assignment.

He beat Sunlight (Zoustar) on that occasion and she has since tailed the field home in the G1 Robert Sangster S. However, her trainers are happy with the mare and she deserves a second chance, especially from an ideal gate.

Santa Ana Lane

Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega {Ire}) won’t have it easy giving weight to all his rivals, but he’s a high-class sprinter and with the right run a threat. Behemoth (All Too Hard) is talented and will be sharper for his sound resuming run for second, he could be the value runner in the field.

Order Of Command (Squamosa) is rock-hard fit and will drop 6.5kg on his win in the Listed Wangoom H. while a wet track would boost the hopes of the veteran Jungle Edge (Dubawi {Ire}), who continues to race well.

Lyre (Lonhro) finished powerfully to just miss out in the Robert Sangster and with 1kg less will be a leading chance again and Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}) is well seasoned and the booking of in-form rider John Allen is another plus in the mare’s favour.

Filly in fine touch

Morphettville, G3 M&J Chickens National S., $120,000, 1200m

Diala (Artie Schiller {USA}) is in hot form with two wins from her last three appearances and she would be ideally-suited to a rain-affected track. Her only failure this time in was at Flemington on a firmer surface.

Kazuhiko (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was a $1.7 million yearling and he has pleased his connections in jump-outs and is expected to give a bold showing on debut. Hard Rock Girl (All Too Hard) has been busy, but is holding her form well and a last-start second is a good guide to her chances.

Zoushine (Zoustar) finished third in that race and she looks to have decent place prospects again while Riched (Rich Enuff) came from well back to win his first start at Balaklava and achieved in a style that suggests he can cope with a rise in class.

Miss Guggenheim (Dundeel {NZ}) hasn’t trialled, but as a daughter of the dual Group 3 winner Sharnee Rose (Nadeem) has a speedy pedigree and is from a stable to be respected.

Stay with Bellx

Morphettville, G3 TAB SA Fillies Classic, $120,000, 2500m

Bellx (Rock Hero) will run this trip out better than most following her runner-up finish over 2400 metres in the Listed Galilee Series Final. She then backed that up with a sound fourth in Listed VRC St Leger over this distance.

La Falaise (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) rushed home late for fourth in the G1 Schweppes Oaks and on that performance is right in the mix here. Stick ‘Em Up (Dundeel {NZ}) was smart winner at Newcastle and her prior run for firth in the G1 Australian Oaks was also sound.

Stick 'Em Up

Silent Sovereign (Dalakhani {Ire}) was unplaced in the Schweppes Oaks and a better guide in this grade may be her previous success in the G3 Auraria S.

Realm Of Flowers (So You Think {NZ}) has been stakes placed on the course and has since beaten the older horses under 60kg. Raptures (Fastnet Rock) is lightly-tried with handy form credentials and looks likely to run the trip so is an upset chance.

Follow Sangster form

Morphettville, G3 TAB Proud Miss S., $120,000, 1200m

Street Icon (Street Cry {Ire}) and Humma Humma (Denman) were unplaced in the G1 Robert Sangster S., but within 4.25l of the winner so in this grade that’s a decent form reference.

Too Good Too Hard (All To Hard) is fashioning a tidy record and this is her favourite distance while Mystery Love (Eurozone) was out of the money on a heavy track last time out and her previous Caulfield win may prove a more worthy guide to her chances.

Zargon (Shamardal {USA}) was a Group 3 winner two runs back and that should make her competitive again, despite the weight, and Magna Bella (Magnus) is genuine and as a course and distance winner is worth more than a second look at odds.

Second-up specialist

Morphettville, G3 Robert & Faye Gerard RA Lee S., $120,000, 1600m

Harbour Views (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) is a smart type and he will be improved for his resuming run for third at Sandown. He has an unblemished second-up record and, at this stage, a mile should be ideal.

Waging War (Rebel Raider) is a genuine mare with a strong course and distance statistics to back her claims and Danon Roman (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) has been freshened and has twice won in that state.

Harbour Views (Fr)

Seabrook (NZ) (Hinchinbrook) comes in well at the weights for a Group 1 winner and her recent performances indicate she can be a threat .

Shrouded In Mist (Exceed And Excel) was an upset winner of the G2 Queen of the South S. and if she gets an easy run in front can’t be taken lightly. Stablemate Vinland (Sebring) was unplaced last time under 61kg and with 5.5kg less she can be more competitive.

Girl on a mission

Morphettville, Listed AAMI Centaurea S., $100,000, 2030m

Girl Tuesday (Street Cry {Ire}) is clearly the highest-rated runner in the field so is particularly well-placed under the conditions of the event. With two runs under her belt, she should be ready to show her best form.

Fidelia

Fidelia (Not A Single Doubt) runs her races out strongly and if there is a genuine pace she will be well-suited while Naivasha (Starcraft {NZ}) is a newcomer to this grade, but is in excellent touch with consecutive wins to her credit.

Bea Tempted (Reset) and Lamu (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) each turned in eye-catching runs at their last starts and are a couple to consider at longer odds.

Colt a wise choice

Gold Coast, G3 TAB Ken Russell Memorial Classic, $125,000, 1200m

Wisdom Of Water (Headwater) is a smart youngster and had little more than a working gallop to gap his rivals over this course and distance last time out. It will be a surprise if the colt doesn’t continue on his winning way.

The Chris Waller-trained pair of Spokesman (Press Statement) and Saffiano (More Than Ready {USA}) are also last-start winners and should give strong accounts again.

Superare (Exceed And Excel) was a tidy winner when resuming at the Sunshine Coast and should be all the better for the outing and Tick Tock Boom (Spirit Of Boom) finished off strongly for second there and should also strip better for the run, his first for six months.

Hightail hot chance

Gold Coast, G3 Brandons Gold Coast Guineas, $125,000, 1200m

Hightail (Written Tycoon) looms as the horse to beat here following his impressive resuming run on the Kensington track. He has performed extremely well in strong 2 and 3-year-old events.

The Odyssey

The Odyssey (Better Than Ready) has won his last three starts and will be a threat if he gets some luck from a tough gate. Exhilarates (Snitzel) is a quality filly and if she gets any sort of run from an outside barrier can make her presence felt.

Bellevue Hill (Pierro) has had two trials to ready him for his return and he’s won first-up in the past while Garibaldi (I Am Invincible) was runner-up to The Odyssey earlier this month and from a handy draw has place hopes.

Fiesta time

Gold Coast, Listed Attwood Marshall Lawyers Silk Stocking, $85,000, 1200m

Fiesta (I Am Invincible) hasn’t raced since she was unplaced in the G1 Coolmore Classic, but has trialled and she has proved a potent force when previously produced in a fresh state.

Fiesta

Multaja (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) rarely gives a poor account of herself and was a close last-start fifth in the G3 Hawkesbury Crown. Jen Rules (Redoute’s Choice) has a recent trial win to her credit after finishing runner-up at Randwick at her most recent appearance.

Grey Shadow (Dash For Cash) was unplaced in the G2 Sapphire S. on a heavy track and can prove some value on a drier surface while Frangipani Moon (Spirit Of Boom) is a smart type with a good record and no surprise to see her in the mix.

Black type preview: Rosehill, Flemington & Ascot

Amangiri a gem

Rosehill, G3 Emirates Park Dark Jewel Classic, $160,000, 1400m

Amangiri (All Too Hard) is a dual Group 3 winner, including the Hawkesbury Cup at her latest appearance, so she looks well-placed under the conditions of the race to strike again.

Sweet Scandal (Sepoy) overcame a wide gate to claim the G3 Hawkesbury Crown and should get a softer run from a better barrier while Dyslexic (Foxwedge) was a touch unlucky when third in that race and with a clearer run is a major player.

Miss Fabulass (Frankel {GB}) is racing well and was runner-up in the G1 Coolmore Classic before finishing fourth in the G2 Emancipation S. She tends to get back in her races so a genuine pace will enhance her prospects.

Stay with Ranier

Rosehill, Listed TAB Luskin Star S., $112,000, 1300m

Ranier (Lonhro) showed he was in for another good preparation with his resuming win at Randwick and he again looks the horse to beat with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Graff

Lanciato (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) was fourth behind Ranier at his last start so any improvement has him in the mix. Graff (Star Witness) is a quality sprinter and his effort for fourth in the Listed Hawk Rush was a sign of better things to come.

Brave Song (Your Song) has been below par in his last two runs, but on his best form is a chance at odds while Eleven Eleven (Fastnet Rock) is back from Group company and, while he is against older opposition, he can give a bold sight from a handy barrier.

Keep following Fituese

Rosehill, Listed Coolmore Denise’s Joy S., $112,000, 1100m

Fituese (Deep Field) is really progressive and her dashing resuming victory on the Kensington track puts her on top here with Rachel King to take the reins again.

Wayupinthesky

The Godolphin pair of Enfleurage (Exceed And Excel) and Aquitaine (Exceed And Excel) are both recent trial winners and strong hopes, despite tricky gates. Satin Socks (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) won well at Warwick Farm and is favoured by a 6.5kg drop in weight.

Wayupinthesky (Snitzel) has to give weight to all her rivals, but it’s hard to ignore her last-start second in the G3 PJ Bell S. behind the rising star Rubisaki (Rubick).

Marcoura in mix again

Rosehill, Listed Yarraman Park Woodlands S., $112,000, 1100m

Macroura (Snitzel) came off a midweek win to follow up on the Kensington track and she looks a filly open to further improvement.

She has drawn the inside gate and that may give her the edge on the also unbeaten Marbooshka (Dream Ahead {USA}), who will have to overcame the outside barrier. Stablemate Sancy (I Am Invincible) is capable of improving on her unplaced resuming run.

Zeftabrook (Hinchinbrook) has won her last two in easier company and is ready for a sterner test and Newsreader (Press Statement) will be all the better for her bold debut showing for third. Mrs Maisel (Hinchinbrook) and Panna Cotta (Fastnet Rock) also deserve respect as last-start winners.

Loving his job

Rosehill, Listed Arrowfield Ortensia S., $112,000, 1100m

Dirty Work (Written Tycoon) moves up in grade here, but is compensated by a 3kg drop in weight. As the winner of his last two starts he is in the right order to take up the challenge.

Villami

His stablemate God Of Thunder (More Than Ready {USA}) ran well last time out and has drawn better while Villami (Foxwedge) is a smart filly and from her inside gate can be expected to be in this for a long way.

Prophet’s Thumb (I Am Invincible) gave a good account last time out and is a chance in an open line-up, as is Spending To Win (Snitzel), who has won four times at this trip.

Stayer in hot form

Flemington, Listed The Andrew Ramsden, $320,000, 2800m

Too Close The Sun (Carlton House {USA}) comes here in sparkling form with three wins on the bounce, including a comfortable victory in the Listed Warrnambool Cup. He’s a progressive type and looks ready to run this distance.

Oceanex (NZ)

King Of Leogrance (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) hasn’t raced since he won the G2 Adelaide Cup, but trainer Danny O’Brien has a knack of producing stayers to win off a limited build-up so the import rates highly.

Runaway (Manhattan Rain) is tough and seasoned after performing well over fences and Norway (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was third last time out and can improve further. Oceanex (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) was a tidy winner over 2500 metres at Morphettville and more than capable of figuring again.

In-form mare one to beat

Ascot, G3 Amelia Park - Roma Cup, $160,000, 1200m

Angelic Ruler (Universal Ruler) is a smart mare who raced with distinction during the Melbourne spring carnival and has come back well this preparation. She was a resuming second and then won the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic.

Black Heart Bart

Gatting (Hard Spun {USA}) is quality performer and he should sprint well fresh and Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) and Vega Magic (Lope De Vega {Ire}) would be hard to hold out if they bring their A games.

Man Booker (Discorsi) is fresh and has been effective in the past off a break while Flirtini (Artie Schiller {USA}) and Electric Light (Vital Equine {Ire}) are other smart types and with the benefit of recent racing to back their claims.

Black type results: Scone

2 min read

Scone, Listed Darley Scone Cup, $160,000, 1600m

Race summary:

Dr Drill (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was given a perfect ride by Keagan Latham and the 5-year-old was good enough to capitalise on it.

The import was settled three back on the rail before Latham angled him across heels 200 metres from home and they rounded off determinedly to score by a short neck.

The favourite Phaistos (Helmet) was caught three near the back of the field, but that didn’t stop him producing a spirited finish for second ahead of Sambro (Fastnet Rock) and Chief Ironside (GB) (Lawman {Fr}), who was in front 350 metres off the post.

Pedigree notes:

Dr Drill is a half-brother to seven winners, including Pinzolo (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) who won an edition of the Listed Newmarket Fairway S. and placed at both Group 2 and 3 level in England.

Their dam Pongee (GB) (Barathea {Ire}) won the G2 Lancashire Oaks and finished runner-up in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks. She has done a terrific job at stud with eight of her nine foals to race having been successful.

She is a half-sister to the two-time stakes-winner Lion Sands (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) and it’s also the family of last year’s G1 Mackinnon S. winner Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Cornerstone cuts fees

Cornerstone Stud has reduced its 2020 service fees by 25 per cent while, due to the current economic conditions, World Of Trouble (USA) will not be shuttling to the farm this year.

“Although I’ve an unwaivering belief in World Of Trouble’s credentials, speed and sire line, I just felt that the South Australian industry was not in a position to throw its collective weight behind a $22,000 dual Group 1-winning sprinter and consequently we will review our position in 2021,” Sam Hayes said.

Proven Group 1 producer Sir Prancealot (Ire) will stand at $9900 (in GST) while Valentia will be offered at $5500 (inc GST). The roster is completed by Ambidexter, who will stand at $4400 (inc GST).

Annabel knows the drill

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace heeded the advice of Annabel Neasham, who runs their Sydney stable, to win their first Listed Scone Cup courtesy of Dr Drill (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

“We had our first runner in the Cup last year and it came stone cold last so I said to Ciaron we’ve got to find something faster to come up this time,” Neasham said.

Dr Drill fitted the bill perfectly and he was angled out of the trail 200 metres from home by rider Keagan Latham to finish off strongly to beat the favourite Phaistos (Helmet).

“We were quite confident this would be his sort of race and it was a beautiful ride from Keagan. I said to cuddle him and he’s got a really good turn of foot," Neasham said. "He was a mile and a-half horse back in Europe and Ciaron has done a great job to put the speed back into his legs.”

Well-bred colt wins

The only foal out of the former top-class race mare May’s Dream (New Approach {Ire}) made his first trial a successful one at Randwick on Friday morning.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Jimmy’s Dream (Not A Single Doubt) won his 742 metre heat in the hands of Tim Clark.

The youngster failed to reach his $150,000 reserve at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where he was offered by Newhaven Park, who has remained in the ownership of the colt.

Jimmy’s Dream’s dam May’s Dream won four races, including the G1 Schweppes Oaks, and she is a daughter of the G1 South Australian Oaks winner and G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up She’s Archie (Archway {Ire}).

Pressure on Ranier

James Cummings will rely on Ranier (Lonhro) to continue Godolphin’s recent domination of the Listed TAB Luskin Star S.

The stable won the race in 2018 with Osborne Bulls (Street Cry {Ire}) and last year with Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}).

Ranier comes into Saturday’s race at Rosehill in fine form following a victory at Randwick last month to open his current campaign.

Aquis buys into colt

Talented 2-year-old Wisdom Of Water (Headwater) will race for new ownership in Saturday’s G3 TAB Ken Russell Classic at the Gold Coast.

Aquis has bought into the colt and will race the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained juvenile with Golden East Horse.

The winner of two of his four starts, including a runaway last-start success, Wisdom Of Water will confirm his place in the upcoming G1 JJ Atkins S. with another bold showing on Saturday.

Cup start on line

Oceanex (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) will be out to secure a golden ticket into the G1 Melbourne Cup when she runs in the Listed Andrew Ramsden S. at Flemington on Saturday.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained 4-year-old will contest the 2800 metre race, with the winner receiving a ballot exemption for the Cup, off the back of success in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup.

Oceanex (NZ)

“It was a fantastic win,” Kent Jnr said. “I don’t think it was a strong race class-wise, but she did display a good staying performance, which is really important for us to see.

“The way she was three-wide early and still stayed on really strongly at the finish gives us confidence that she will stay the trip on Saturday.

“The race lacks a bit of depth on Saturday, but there are two or three to beat there that are classier than what she faced last time.”

Collett back in action

Jockey Alysha Collett is happy to be back in the saddle and will ride on Sunday at Queanbeyan in New South Wales.

Collett had been in Singapore, where she is licensed to ride until the end of the year, when racing was shut-down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She joined fellow riders Michael Rodd, Patrick Moloney and Daniel Moor in making a move to Australia.

Alysha Collett

“When we went into isolation (in Singapore) for the month the numbers weren’t that high daily but it came to two weeks of isolation and they were getting about a thousand cases daily,” Collett said. “So they decided to put another month on the isolation, maybe two. It was hard for us jockeys to be sitting in a condo not doing anything.”

Collett completed the mandatory two weeks isolation on arrival in Sydney and had a negative COVID-19 test before returning to riding work on Wednesday.

“I haven’t ridden in New Zealand in the past two years and after riding in Singapore I had always wanted to come to Sydney to ride,” she said. “You are always putting new challenges on yourself to improve as a jockey and I thought that coming here could be better for my future.”

June 1 restart

The British Horseracing Authority is working its plans for a return of racing off a June 1 resumption date.

Under that plan, Newcastle will re-open proceedings with an eight-race card on its all-weather course on June 1 with Newcastle again and Kempton each staging eight races the following day.

In major movements, the G1 Coronation Cup will be moved to Friday, June 5 at Newmarket and will be staged alongside the G3 Brigadier Gerard, G3 Abernant S. and Listed Paradise S. Lingfield also races on June 5 and will host its Oaks and Derby trials.

Inspection protocols

Tattersalls and Goffs have agreed to a set of safety protocols to be utilised on farms during upcoming yearlings inspections, the two sales companies announced in a joint statement on Thursday.

These inspections will begin on May 18, as a phased return of outdoor workers will then be allowed by the British and Irish governments as the coronavirus restrictions ease. These safety protocols will be closely followed by both companies’ inspection teams and comply with all government guidance related to social distancing, hand sanitation, and the wearing of appropriate PPE gear to ensure the safety and welfare of vendors, their staff and the sales company personnel.

Woodbine to open

Woodbine has been given approval to race without spectators as part of Stage 1 of the Ontario government’s framework to gradually reopen the Province. Stage 1 is scheduled to start May 19.

Woodbine | Image courtesy of Michael Burns/WEG

“This is great news for the sport of horse racing and the tens of thousands of people it employs throughout the Province,” said Jim Lawson, Chief Executive Officer of Woodbine Entertainment.

“I would also like to thank the entire horse racing community for their patience, understanding and commitment in following health guidelines during this time. In doing so, it has put the entire industry in the position to resume live horse racing in the coming weeks.”

Looking Ahead - May 16

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we are expecting a filly who ran well on debut to show improvement at Rosehill while at Kembla Grange we like the chances of a half-brother to a Group 1 winner and a 2-year-old from a fast North American family to make impressions.

Rosehill, Race 3, 12.45pm AEST, Listed Yarraman Park Woodlands S., $112,000, 1100m

Newsreader (Press Statement) had just the one trial before she made her debut on the Kensington track a couple of weeks ago. From a wide gate she went back and made ground strongly in the straight to finish third behind Macroura (Snitzel), a race rival again.

Newsreader as a yearling

With the benefit of that experience and a better barrier, the John O’Shea-trained Newsreader is capable of significant improvement. A $170,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, she is out of the multiple winner and Group 1 performer Thinking Of You (NZ) (Thorn Park). It is the family of the G2 Kewney S. winner Eureka Jewel (Semipalatinsk {USA}) and the G3 Frank Packer Plate winner Spurred On (Flying Spur).

Kembla Grange, Race 1, 11.42am AEST, Carlton Draught Mdn., $31,500, 1000m

Shadow Chaser (Super One) was a $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate and is a half-brother to three winners, including the top-class Viddora (I Am Invincible) who won the G1 Moir S. and the G1 Winterbottom S. They are out of Snow Flight (NZ) (Colombia {NZ}), successful five times and further back in the pedigree is the former French Horse of the Year Detroit (Fr) (Riverman {USA}) and her multiple Group 1-winning son and sire Carnegie (Ire).

Shadow Chaser as a yearling

Trained by Richard and Michael Freedman, Shadow Chaser finished sixth in his first appearance at Newcastle, but wasn’t far off the winner. The colt should strip a lot sharper for the outing and appeals as a strong chance.

Kembla Grange, Race 2, 12.17pm AEST, Wave FM 2YO Mdn., $31,500, 1000m

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-prepared Dominant Lady (I Am Invincible) comes from a strong North American black type family with her dam Sensible Lady (USA) (Street Sense {USA}) the winner of six Listed sprints. She is out of Awesome Lady (USA) (Bianconi {USA}), also successful twice at stakes level and a Group 3 performer.

I Am Invincible, sire of Dominant Lady | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud

Dominant Lady finished in behind the placegetters in both of her outings during the summer before she was set aside. The filly has been given a thorough grounding ahead of this preparation with three trial outings and can make an impact on her return.
