Looking Ahead - May 21

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Thursday, Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr debut a Snitzel 3-year-old at Seymour, a Wandjina filly resumes for a new stable at Hawkesbury and a well related daughter of Fastnet Rock takes on the older horses at Pakenham.

Seymour, Race 2, 1pm AEST, North Central Hire Mdn, $20,700, 1300m

Terrace House (Snitzel) was a $300,000 purchase out of the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and is out of the imported mare Fleeting Touch (USA) (Touch Gold {USA}), who has produced two stakes winners in Running Tall (Stratum) and Mister Kaopu (Redoute's Choice) as well as two stakes placegetters in Sensibility (Redoute's Choice) and Ephemera (More Than Ready {USA}).

He has had a couple of jump-outs heading into his debut, and in his most recent at Caulfield on May 12 was pushed along to win with a bit of authority, showing the style of improvement much desired ahead of a first start.

Hawkesbury, Race 3, 1.25pm AEST, Australia Farriers Conference Provincial and Country Mdn, $31,500, 1300m

Whitchety Grub (Wandjina) makes her first appearance for Matthew Vella having showed a bit at her first preparation for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, finishing a close-up third on debut at Randwick Kensington and then seventh at a strong midweek maiden after that. She has looked good at the trials this time in, finishing first and then second in two hitouts at Hawkesbury and this looks a winnable maiden for her.

She is out of Ice Creme (Encosta De Lago), the half-sister to Group 1 winner Ike's Dream (King Of Kings {Ire}) as well as stakes-placed Miss Hurry Khan (Hurricane Sky). The third dam is the juvenile stakes-winner Beans (Blazing Saddles), while stakes winners such as Opportunity (Redoute's Choice) and County (Vain) also feature on the page.

Pakenham Synthetic, Race 4, 7pm AEST, Polytrack Mdn, $31,500, 1200m

2-year-old filly Dame Defector (Fastnet Rock) makes her debut against the older horses here for Peter and Paul Snowden. She had a recent jump-out at Flemington which was a little inconclusive, but she must have shown enough to put her in for her debut here.

She was a $260,000 purchase out of the 2019 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Spicer Thoroughbreds and is out of stakes-winning mare Lovetorn (Giant's Causeway {USA}), who has already produced a couple of winners. This filly is a three-quarter sister to the multiple stakes-winner Lovemelikearock (Fastnet Rock) from a Northern Hemisphere family which features the likes of Grade winners Joyeux Danseur (USA) (Nureyev {USA}) and Arazi (USA) (Blushing Groom {Fr}).
