Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we like the chances at Randwick of a pair of youngsters out of Group 1 winners while at Newcastle a 3-year-old who raced boldly on debut looks capable of showing winning improvement.
Randwick, Race 1, 11.30am AEST, Darley 2YO H., $100,000, 1300m
Overlord (Sebring) profiles well for this race with an improving form line and a high-class sprint-biased pedigree to back the colt’s prospects. He is a the first foal to race for the former top mare Red Tracer (Dane Shadow), winner of 15 races including the Myer Classic and the Tattersall’s Tiara at Group 1 level.
The late Sebring, sire of Overlord
She is a sister to the G1 Galaxy H. winner Shellscrape and a half-sister to Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice), who won the G3 Fred Best Classic. Overlord was third on debut before he finished runner-up behind Peltzer (So You Think {NZ}), again a race rival, from the outside barrier on this course. With the gates reversed, the Chris Waller-trained chestnut can turn the tables.
Randwick, Race 3, 12.40pm AEST, Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation H., $100,000, 2000m
Reinvest (Redoute’s Choice) was a $450,000 graduate of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is a half-brother to multiple winner High Rev (Fastnet Rock). They are sons of the G1 Schweppes Oaks and G3 Doomben Roses winner Invest (Dehere {USA}), a daughter of the G1 Flight S. winner Unearthly (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).
Reinvest as a yearling
It is a family that has starred over ground so there’s every confidence the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Reinvest will be a handful over this trip. He has been successful in both of his starts up to a mile and looks a strong chance to maintain his winning habit.
Newcastle, Race 1, 11.37am AEST, TLE Newcastle Mdn, $31,500, 1200m
The Bjorn Baker-trained Brook Hill (Hinchinbrook) came off two encouraging trials to finish a sound third at the first time of asking over this course and distance earlier this month. The gelding will again be ridden by Mitchell Bell and with natural improvement looks well-placed to open his account.
Brook Hill as a yearling
A half-brother to three winners, Brook Hill was a $110,000 purchase at the Gold Coast and is a son of Bellbird Hill (Ashkalani {Ire}). She was successful twice up to 1100 metres and is a half-sister to the multiple stakes-winner Unanimously (Not A Single Doubt) and also the family of the black type winners The Travelling Man (Mossman), British Lion (Celtic Swing) and British General (General Nediym).
