Gleesons riding high on the 'Thrilla from Chinchilla'

6 min read
With some strong results at the yearling sales, 2020 has already been a successful year for Chinchilla-based Gleeson Thoroughbred Connections, but it is a $10,000 sales reject which could propel them to a whole new level of success as Group 1 breeders in the next fortnight.

Patriarch Wally Gleeson heads up the family-run operation, with the former jockey's horsemanship a considerable asset for a business which also involves his wife Jill and his three sons Jacob, Simon and Tim.

For the past decade, they have operated as small-time commercial breeders, selling through the major sales on the Gold Coast and Sydney, and achieving some strong results, including $410,000 for a Spirit Of Boom colt at the 2018 Inglis Classic Sale.

Earlier this year, Gleeson Thoroughbred Connections sold four yearlings for $560,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, its best ever result at a sale, including $250,000 for a Deep Field colt picked up by Star Thoroughbreds and now under the eye of Champion trainer Chris Waller.

But while that success was crucial to its growing reputation as a vendor, the Gleeson family was very much aware that one of their earlier graduates was ready to put their name in lights. At that stage, Rothfire (Rothesay) had won a couple of pre-Christmas 2-year-old races, including one by 6l, and the reports from the Robert Heathcote stable were that he had more improvement to come.

He put together two more wins in February and while he suffered his first defeat when second in the QTIS Jewel in March, he resumed with a tough on-pace success in Saturday's G2 Champagne Classic at Eagle Farm.

Rothfire is now favourite for the G1 JJ Atkins S., with his breeders cheering him every step of the way.

"It's a big thrill for us. We started breeding commercially around 10 years ago and while Rothfire wasn't as commercial as he could have been, to come out and win a Group 2 with a horse bred from our place in Chinchilla is a huge thrill for us," Simon Gleeson told TDN AusNZ.

"It’s great for our farm, to be a small breeder in a place that is just outside of Queensland's breeding zone and be a chance to breed a Group 1 winner would be a fantastic result."

It was only just over a year ago that the Gleesons were struggling to find a home for the then yearling, who didn’t have the pedigree to get himself into any of the major sales.

"He never really stood out as a younger horse. We breed 15-20 foals and he was just another one of the foals. He was a nice horse, and he was always well put together, but he lacked the pedigree to get into any of the bigger sales," Gleeson said.

"We ended up getting stuck with him and had to find a home for him, because we only tend to keep the fillies to race ourselves.

"We offered him to North Queensland to see if we could get anyone to take him up there. We had bred out of that mare a filly called Rylee's Saga, that ended up being the top 2-year-old up in North Queensland. We thought we might be able to offload him up there, but that didn’t work out."

Heathcote to the rescue

Enter trainer Robert Heathcote, who the Gleeson family already had an association with.

"I rang Rob. We've got a number of horses in work with him and have a good relationship with him. I told him we have this colt at home, he's a nice horse, he doesn't have a lot of pedigree, but he's well put together and we don't want a hell of a lot of money for him," he said.

"We needed $10,000 for him and I said if you are interested, we will send him down to Kevin Thomas to get him broken in. Rob liked the Rothesays and took him and it went from there."

It wasn't until well-respected horseman Thomas, who runs Washpool Lodge, got his hands on the gelding that it became clear that Rothfire, as he was to be called, was a little bit special.

"Kevin is a renowned horseman and he rang Rob up and was giving him glowing reports. When he came into Rob's stables, Kevin said he'd be interested in taking a share in the horse. Rob had already filled him up. But that gave us an inkling that he might be a good horse," Gleeson said.

Chinchilla tough

Only six months after he was rejected from the sales, Rothfire came out and won his first trial by 7.5l, backed up and won another trial and then led all the way to win on debut at Eagle Farm. He has developed somewhat of a cult following, with Heathcote coining the phrase 'The Thrilla from Chinchilla.'

That maiden win was back on October 19, and while he has had a couple of lets ups, he is doing a remarkable job to still be improving enough to be winning Group 2 races in May and fronting up in a JJ Atkins.

"It’s a bit of a hall mark of the Rothesay breed, they are tough," Gleeson said. "We pride ourselves on our farm on breeding tough horses. My father is a really good horseman. He's been around horses all his life.

Rothesay | Standing at Lyndhurst Stud

"He is rising 70 and he looks after 60 horses on his own. He handles everything from foals, to doing yearling preps to walking mares onto studs. He's very energetic and he's a great horseman. Our horses are all very well educated. Rothfire shows that, because he's relaxed too. He's had a lot of education from an early age."

Unfortunately for the Gleesons, Rothfire's dam Huss On Fire (NZ) (Hussonet {USA}) died from a leg infection last year, but they have been able to buy back a couple of his siblings to maintain a connection to the family.

"We have been fortunate enough to buy Rothfire's half-sister, Fiery Hussy, who is by Sizzling, back after we sold her in Sydney in 2018," Gleeson said.

"We sold her to Angela Davies, but we bought her back off the back of a good trial for Rothfire. Angela told us that she had bowed a tendon at trackwork and never raced. They found her for us and we had a free nomination to Flying Artie and we sent her there and she's in foal."

Wally Gleeson

Fiery Hussy is set to go through the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in July with a fairly significant pedigree update, thanks to her younger half-brother.

The Gleesons also recently purchased the sister to Rothfire, Smokin' Hussay, who won one race for Toowoomba trainer Rex Lipp, and they are currently assessing their options on which stallion she starts her breeding career with this year.

There are a host of possibilities, with the Gleesons holding shares or breeding rights in a myriad of stallions, most of them based in Queensland.

Graham plots Victorem's Stradbroke shot from afar

5 min read
Trainer Jenny Graham never could have predicted that a state border would prevent her from watching her pride and joy, Victorem (I Am Invincible), contest a Group 1 race, but she is coming to terms with the fact she won't be on course when the 5-year-old fronts up as one of the leading chances in the G1 Stradbroke H. on Saturday week.

Cover image by Albert Perez courtesy of AAP Photos

The impacts of the COVID-19 shutdown have already created plenty of strange circumstances for owners, trainers, breeders and their horses, and the fact that Graham will be 500km south of Eagle Farm on June 6 at Port Macquarie when Victorem shoots for Group 1 glory can be added to that surreal playlist.

Graham has relied implicitly on the guidance and generosity of Eagle Farm trainer Barry Lockwood to oversee Victorem's campaign, as she is stuck in New South Wales, unable to cross the northern border because of COVID-19 protocols.

The situation hit home again after Victorem's excellent win in Saturday's G2 Victory S.

"It's difficult being away from him. It’s really difficult. I said to Barry this morning, it would be just nice to walk out the door and give him a pat for what he's done," she told TDN AusNZ.

"I'm sure we will catch up again when all this is over. It is a bit strange but we have to enjoy the ride and do the best we can for the horse."

"It is a bit strange but we have to enjoy the ride and do the best we can for the horse." - Jenny Graham

The Queensland carnival was always the target for Victorem after he finished second in The Kosciuszko at Randwick in the spring, His two previous stakes wins were both in Brisbane, in the 2018 Listed Lough Neagh S. and the 2019 Listed Hinkler H., while Graham had tested him out in Group 1 company there last year, where he finished eighth in the G1 Kingsford-Smith Cup.

Convinced that he had improved again heading into this campaign, the Stradbroke looked an ideal target, with the possibility of other Group 1 options.

Then COVID-19 threw a considerable spanner in the works with the entire Queensland carnival initially cancelled before a decision was made to revive the Stradbroke as one of only two Group 1 races, the other being the JJ Atkins S.

Jenny Graham with Victorem

Cross-border challenge

It quickly became apparent that the challenge for Graham was to find a way for Victorem to head to Queensland without her being by the horse's side.

"It was a difficult decision. But where we stay at Barry Lockwood's, we stayed there last campaign and we know the horse settles there. Barry knows the horse as well as we do. It was a hard decision, but he was always going to be in great hands. We have a lot of contact between us and it works well," Graham said.

"Barry knows the horse as well as we do. It was a hard decision, but he was always going to be in great hands." - Jenny Graham

The campaign hasn't been without hiccups and Victorem put in the worst performance of his career at his first run back in the G3 BRC Sprint at Doomben earlier this month. He was bumped after the start, and then bucked, losing all chance in the race.

He was required to trial last Tuesday, just four days out from the Victory S., and the use of a lambswool girth made a big difference. Despite the less-than-ideal build-up, Graham said she never lost confidence in the horse.

Jenny Graham credits Victorem's impressive record to his terrific attitude

"I was very confident he would bounce back. He was fresh and well. We made a small gear change. He just settled a lot better yesterday and the gear he had on was a bit bigger and all those things helped for yesterday," she said.

Victorem's record now stands at eight wins from 19 starts and nearly $1.3 million in prizemoney. Graham attributes that impressive record to the gelding's terrific attitude.

"I think he just wants to win, I really do. He's a very competitive horse and loves life really. He enjoys what he does but I will say, as he has gone from being a young horse, he just continues to improve through each campaign," she said.

Reconnecting with the family

Victorem was purchased for $65,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions 2YO In Training Sale, with Graham signing the docket after discussions with Mark Owens, who had been involved with breeding him, and had raced the dam, Playful Miss (Foreplay) with her.

Owens spoke to TDN AusNZ in 2018 about having given away Playful Miss, then bought her back with her foal, before convincing Graham to train her I Am Invincible gelding after he was slated to sell to an owner in Korea.

Graham was initially not going to bid on the horse, but Owens convinced her he was worth a shot.

"I trained the mother and he went through the sales but at the time, I couldn’t afford the money that he went for. But the owner then decided he didn’t want him to go overseas, so he approached me at the sales and we worked between us and basically sold shares in him and here we are," Graham said.

Victorem as a 2-year-old

The gelding immediately made an impression with his trainer

"Even when we had him as a baby, we always felt he showed talent very early," she said.

He is now an $8 chance to give Graham her first Group 1 win in the Stradbroke and while she won't be there to guide his preparation, it is now full steam ahead to that race under Lockwood's guidance.

"He's pulled up very well. He licked the bin out last night, Barry reported to me. So he's done very well," she said.

"I spoke to (jockey) Mark (Du Plessis) last night and he said he felt that there was still more improvement in him. I think going forward, being up to 1400 metres won't worry him a bit."

Spring plans for unbeaten Dissident filly

3 min read

By Bren O'Brien

Lindsay Park is eyeing spring stakes races for impressive 2-year-old Aidensfield (Dissident), who made it two wins from as many starts in the Samson H. at Sandown on Sunday.

Aidensfield was a good winner on debut for David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig at Caulfield earlier this month and stepped up her improvement significantly on Sunday, powering away under Daniel Stackhouse to win by 3.5l from Starelle (More Than Ready {USA}), who finished on well for Danny O'Brien on debut, with the early leader Soul Obsession (I Am Invincible) another 0.75l away in third.

Aidensfield's cause was considerably helped by the late scratching of her chief rival in the market La Mexicana (I Am Invincible), but she was nevertheless impressive enough to have the stable thinking of spring targets.

"She's a very professional filly," stable representative JD Hayes said. "She's two from two now and she couldn’t have done it any better."

"She's done everything right now. She's earned herself a little break and will get a crack at them in the spring. Those colours have had a lot of success and hopefully she's given herself every opportunity to get there.

"She’ll hit the ground running and be ready for those better 3-year-old races."

As Hayes alluded to, Aidensfield carries the brown and white colours of Henderson Racing and Breeding, who have raced several top-line performers including Group 1 winners Sweet Idea (Snitzel) and Descarado (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

She was a $125,000 purchase for Lindsay Park and Andrew Williams Bloodstock at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Newgate Farm.

Aidensfield as a yearling

Bred by Henderson Racing, she is the second foal out of Muscovado (Big Brown {USA}), the half-sister to Group 3 winner Sugar Babe (Exceed And Excel) out of the G2 Surround S. winner On Type (Zeditave). Listed winner Typing (Sebring) also features on the page.

Aidensfield is one of 33 winners in 2019/20 for Newgate's second-season sire Dissident, who has one stakes winner to date in the Listed winner Pancho.

Gobstopper sticks on again

Earlier on the Sandown card, the well-bred jumper Gobstopper (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) continued his great run in feature jumps races, with victory in the $100,000 Australian Hurdle over 3900 metres.

A last-start winner of the Galleywood Hurdle at Warrnambool, the 7-year-old, trained by Eric Musgrove relished the heavy track to win by 2.75l from the horse he defeated in the Galleywood, Runaway (Manhattan Rain), with Robbie's Star (Shinzig) in third.

He has now won over $450,000 with his 11th win from 43 starts.

He is a brother to recent G1 Schweppes Oaks winner Toffee Tongue (NZ), being out of Bagalollies (Zabeel {NZ}), who also produced the Hong Kong Derby and multiple Group 1 winner Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}).

The $100,000 Australian Steeple was taken out by the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Bit Of A Lad (Ladoni {GB}).

Coming back off his fourth in the Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool, Bit Of A Lad proved too seasoned for his rivals, cruising away to win by 8l from Shamal (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), with Undergroundfighter (Shinzig) in third.

Before they were famous: Bivouac

Bivouac

TDN AusNZ: What was Bivouac like as a foal?

John Sunderland, Stud Manager Godolphin Woodlands: He was a later foal born on November 4 and was a nice leggy, scopey colt at birth. As a later foal he was a bit immature but straight forward with good conformation.

TDN AusNZ: What was the foaling down like?

JS: Presented upside down but was easily corrected and a straight forward foaling. He was 59.5kgs at birth.

TDN AusNZ: What was Bivouac like as a weanling?

JS: He was on the immature side but continued to slowly improve as he got older. He was quite cheeky as a weanling and always playful in the paddock.

TDN AusNZ: Did he have any best friends or paddock mates?

JS: He shared the nursery area with the filly Colette (Hallowed Crown), but one of his constant paddock mates was Chenier (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}) who would grow out to be a good 3-year-old for Godolphin and has now been sold to race in Hong Kong.

TDN AusNZ: What was he like through his yearling years?

JS: Although he was a later foal he continued to improve and show signs of precocity as a yearling and after a one week education prep, he commenced his breaking-in with the second group on January 31, 2018 at Kelvinside.

Bivouac winning the G1 Seppelt Wines Newmarket H.

Education notes

TDN AusNZ: What was Bivouac like in his early days of work, did he display any 'standout' qualities?

Scott Eeles, Godolphin (Breaking In and Pre-Training): Bivouac handled his education without concern. He had an even temperaments as a yearling with no real standout trait.

He came through in the very first group in January that year. He was quite unassuming during his time here, but caught the eye under saddle.

First impressions

TDN AusNZ: What was your first impression of Bivouac?

Victoria 'Dizzy' Appleby, Assistant Trainer: He was quite feminine but athletic and very willing in everything asked of him.

TDN AusNZ: What was his temperament like?

VA: He was a kind tempered colt and loved a cuddle (those big eyes drew you in to give him a hug).

Bivouac gets a hug and a pat from the team and winning connections

TDN AusNZ: Did he have any particular traits that made him standout?

VA: His overall attitude, his uncomplicated way about him, eat, sleep and perform.

TDN AusNZ: How soon did you see something ‘special’ in him?

VA: When Nacim Dilmi jumped him out of the barriers and said, “I think is probably one of the quickest horses I’ve ridden”, and he’s ridden a few good ones and is a pretty good judge.

TDN AusNZ: Was he a team favourite?

VA: Bivouac was a team favourite, just because all staff could handle him if needed.

TDN AusNZ: What have been the highlights of having Bivouac under your care at Crown?

VA: The highlights for the whole team was watching the boys turn into men, from the first time they came out for track work to progressing to be Group 1 winners.

Maxfield leads banner day for Bernardini

It was a banner day for Darley Australia’s former shuttle stallion Bernardini (USA) on Saturday when three runners out of his daughters won stakes on the Churchill Downs card, led by the undefeated Maxfield (USA) (Street Sense {USA}) in the Grade 3 Matt Winn.

Forced to scratch out of last year’s Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile due to injury, Maxfield was making his highly anticipated 3-year-old debut in the race for Godolphin and trainer Brendan Walsh. Forced wide around the first turn of the 1700 metre race, Maxfield ran near the back of a tightly bunched pack just a few lengths behind a duelling trio of leaders.

The race turned into the perfect educational opportunity for the lightly race colt when he had to navigate traffic to find running room in the middle of the track down the straight. In the final furlong, Maxfield had to deal with a wandering Ny Traffic (USA) (Cross Traffic {USA}) but didn’t back down from being crowded by the rival, taking the lead with 100 metres left to run.

Maxfield had his ears pricked when finishing 1l ahead of Ny Traffic with Uncle Mo’s (USA) Pneumatic (USA) 0.75l back in third. The win earned him 50 points toward the Kentucky Derby, taking his total to 60 points after winning last year’s Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland for 10 points.

“He came off the layoff today at 1 1/16 miles and did very good,” said jockey Jose Ortiz. “Brendan did a fantastic job getting him ready off the layoff and I don’t think (the Kentucky Derby distance of) 1 ¼ miles will be a problem for him.”

Undefeated in three Kentucky starts, it's likely Maxfield will travel for his next race with the Grade 1 Belmont S. in New York kicking off the Triple Crown series on June 20.

By former Darley shuttle stallion Street Sense (USA), Maxfield joined Dunbar Road (USA) (Quality Road {USA}) and Owendale (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}) as stakes winners on the Churchill Downs card out of Bernardini daughters. Maxfield and Dunbar Road are two of eight Grade 1 winners out of Bernardini mares with Owendale one of 19 graded stakes winners from his daughters.

A Godolphin homebred, Maxfield is a grandson of Grade 3 winner Caress (USA) (Storm Cat {USA}), the dam of Grade 1 winner and sire Sky Mesa (USA) (Pulpit {USA}) and Grade 3 winner Golden Velvet (USA) (Seeking The Gold {USA}).

United prevails in G2 Charles Whittingham

Making his first start in nearly four months after traveling for a Dubai World Cup night race, United (USA) (Giant’s Causeway {USA}) showed the trip hadn’t taken anything out of him with a win in the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham on Saturday night.

Starting on the downhill turf course in the 2000 metre race, United was happy to gallop just behind the leading Synthesis (USA) (First Samurai {USA}) early on a few lengths in front of the rest of the field. Moving to the leader’s hip half-way down the backstretch, United went head to head with the 4-year-old in the far turn and Synthesis quickly faded as United took control of the race.

The gelding enjoyed a brief unchallenged lead until the field hit midstretch when he was taken on by both Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and Originaire (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) with Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock) also taking part in the challenge. In the end, it was a tight finish with United getting his head down just in time to beat Rockemperor by a nose.

The results took a few minutes to be pushed official with the stewards first having to examine the photo for a winner than look at an incident between Rockemperor and Originaire that saw Rockemperor demoted to third behind Originaire.

The race proved to have a strong Australian connection with each of the top five finishers’ sires shuttling to Australia during their stallion career, led by fourth place finisher Desert Encounter’s sire and Coolmore Australia stalwart Fastnet Rock.

A son of the late Giant’s Causeway, United is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Harlan Punch (USA) (Harlan’s Holiday {USA}) and Listed winner Tensas Punch (USA) (War Front {USA}) from the family of Grade 1 winner Liaison (USA) (Indian Charlie {USA}).

Breeders’ Cup winner Sharing wins 3-year-old debut

Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Sharing (USA) (Speightstown {USA}) started her 3-year-old campaign off with a bang on Saturday when winning the Tepin S. at Churchill Downs.

Breaking strongly, Sharing went into the first turn of the 1600 metre race a few paths off the rail but sat comfortably under jockey Manny Franco a few lengths behind the leader. The Eclipse Thoroughbreds and Gainesway Stable-owned filly started making up ground around the turn and was even with the leader as they entered the stretch. It didn’t take long for Sharing to get the lead and she easily fended off a late run from Abscond (USA) (Blame {USA}) to win by 0.5l.

The only Breeders’ Cup winner whose sire and dam have also won Breeders’ Cup races, Sharing is out of 2010 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Shared Account (USA) (Pleasantly Perfect {USA}), who is also by a Breeders’ Cup winner in Pleasantly Perfect.

Co-owned by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, who also co-owned Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Pinot (Pierro), the filly is one of three winners from three to race out of her dam, including Listed winner Riley’s Choice (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}).

Shared Account’s third winner I’m Pretty Strong (USA) (Street Cry {Ire}) was purchased by Australian-based Boomer Bloodstock for US$220,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Sale and made three starts in Australia before visiting Dundeel (NZ) last season.

Unbeaten Daring Tact makes history in Japan

Short-priced favourite Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) has claimed the G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (2400 metres) with a barnstorming finish.

Jockey Kohei Matsuyama settled Daring Tact a long way off the pace, and halfway down the straight, the filly's cause looked a lost one as she spotted Win Mighty (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn)) a huge start.

But given a clear run late on, she closed strongly over the final 100 metres and while for a brief moment the eventual runner-up Win Marilyn (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) looked like she might cause an upset having shot through along the inside, the momentum was with the favourite and she recorded a narrow win. The two Win horses, Marilyn and Mighty, filled the placings.

Now a winner of all four of her lifetime starts, Daring Tact is the first filly in 63 years to win both the G1 Oka Sho and the G1 Yushun Himba while remaining unbeaten. Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) completed the double two years ago, but was beaten at her track debut.

Daring Tact is trained by Haruki Sugiyama, owned by Normandy Thoroughbred Racing and was bred by Hasegawa Bokujo.

Regally bred Charm Spirit colt wins Derby du Midi

Off since mid-February, the well-bred Fantastic Spirit (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) won his third race of the year – and his first stakes race – when taking home the 164th edition of the Listed Derby du Midi.

Breaking from the rail in the 1750 metre race, Fantastic Spirit quickly took his spot in midpack a few lengths behind the leading Sayidah Kodiac (GB) (Kodiac {GB}). While Sayidah Kodiac opened up a few lengths on the field early on, he came back to the field with 800 metres left to run to place Fantastic Spirit in a perfect position to pounce as the field entered the final 100 metres of the race.

Fantastic Spirit quickly overtook the leader but had to face a tough duel with Again Music (Fr) (Palace Episode {USA}) to earn his first black type success. In the end, he was able to hold off that foe by a short neck to become the 12th stakes winner under his first three dams for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and owner Ecurie Antonio Caro.

The seventh stakes winner for Windsor Park Stud shuttle sire Charm Spirit, he is one of two winners from his dam Fantastic Cuix (Fr) (Fantastic Light {USA}).

A half-sister to the dam of Group 1 winner Goldream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and granddam of Group 1 Two Thousand Guineas winner Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}), Fantastic Cuix is out of a half-sister to champion racehorse and successful sire Montjeu (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells {USA}) and the dam of Irish Champion 2YO Again (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Back-to-back for Exultant

Exultant (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) has claimed his fifth Group 1, showing plenty of courage to win the G1 Champions and Chater Cup at Sha Tin.

Ridden by Zac Purton, the Tony Cruz-trained Exultant made it back-to-back wins in the race, taking control from early leader Time Warp (GB) (Archipenko {USA}) at the top of the straight.

Both Chefano (SAF) (Silvano {Ger}) and Furore (NZ) (Pierro) were there to challenge over the final stages, but Exultant kicked on and held a clear 1l margin on the line over Chefano, with Furore filling third, another 0.25l away.

Exultant had won the G1 QEII Cup last time out and he has won four of his seven starts for the season, making him a front runner to be named Hong Kong Horse Of The Year.

Mare confirmed positive for Theileria equi

Further testing has confirmed that a mare who was set for export from New Zealand to Australia is positive to exotic organism Theileria equi.

The mare in question was imported under New Zealand protocols last year from France and has been resident at Cambridge Stud since her arrival in February 2019.

She was set to be exported to Australia and a positive test was picked up as part of standard export certification prior to onward shipment.

The test put an immediate halt to importation of horses into Australia from New Zealand as Australia does not have Theileria equi and exports currently require certification that New Zealand is free of the disease.

There is currently a holt on the importation of horses from New Zealand to Australia

"Negotiations with Australia to resume trans Tasman transport appear to be progressing positively,” New Zealand Equine Health Association Chairman Ivan Bridge said.

“MPI Market Access are working on that right now and what that will most likely mean is we will be required to have two piroplasmosis tests carried out on a single blood for all horses being exported to Australia in the short to medium term.”

Bridge said an immediate focus was to facilitate the transport of in-foal mares across the Tasman, which may only travel up to 300 days in foal.

“One of our priorities is ensuring those mares covered in the first five days of last breeding season are able to get to Australia by June 26.

“There is also a shipment of horses bound for Hong Kong via Sydney on June 7, so there is some haste.”

“Post Covid 19 air freight access is another complicating factor, almost the perfect storm."

McEvoys' Ballarat move delayed

The move of Tony and Calvin McEvoy to new stables at Ballarat has been put on hold.

The father-son partnership were set to relocate to Ballarat from their Angaston base after the end of the Adelaide carnival, but delays caused by COVID-19 has seen them push their moving date back a few months.

The training partnership of Calvin and Tony McEvoy have had their plans to move to a new training base at Ballarat put on hold

Construction of the new facility was set to be completed by now, but it was ceased as part of the broader COVID-19 shutdown forcing the McEvoys to wait.

They intend to take up residence in September/October with jockey Barend Vorster to follow suit and make the move from South Australia.

Missing JJ Atkins Not An Option

The G1 JJ Atkins S remains on Not An Option's (Not A Single Doubt) radar after he was scratched on Saturday.

Not An Option is under the care of Richard and Michael Freedman while in Australia, and the decision was made not to run him on the heavy track on Saturday and head straight to the Eagle Farm feature on June 6.

Trainer Tony Pike was happy Not An Option wasn't running on Saturday (May 23)

“A heavy track and carrying 60kg wasn’t ideal for him, so after watching the first race I was happy he didn’t run,” his usual trainer Tony Pike said from New Zealand.

“He will go to the trials at Canterbury next Friday instead and if he goes well then he will head to Brisbane for the JJ Atkins.

“We will probably put the blinkers on him and the 1400m at Eagle Farm will be perfect for him.

“He’s had a ten-day break and a little freshen up and from what we have seen he should be very competitive.”

Waddell set for Australian move

New Zealand jockey Jason Waddell has confirmed his intention to relocate to Australia.

The 34-year-old, a winner of 11 stakes races this season, has been considering his future during the current shutdown of New Zealand racing and put a short message up on Twitter saying he intends to move to Australia once travel restrictions are lifted.

Among his recent victories are the G1 New Zealand Oaks with star filly Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), who will head to Melbourne to compete this spring.

His biggest win in Australia came aboard (Lord) Tavistock (NZ) in the 2010 G2 Blamey S.

BHA publishes guidelines for return to Racing

As British racing prepares to get underway, on Saturday the British Horseracing Authority published operating procedures for racing behind closed doors.

Working with racecourses and trainer, jockey, and staff representatives, the BHA’s guidelines were also developed in consultation with Public Health England and cross-sport Chief Medical Officers. The guidelines are aligned with other elite sports’ operating procedures published so far and include information on the restriction of staff allowed to attend race days, screening that must be undertaken by personnel before entering the track, and requirements for international runners.

“Racing has been able to develop its guidelines based on our experience of operating bio-secure environments to control the spread of infection in horses, and a robust approach to regulation and enforcing the rules,” said Brant Dunshea, the BHA’s chief regulatory officer. “Our trainers, jockeys and staff carry out their roles in a highly disciplined way because working with horses always carries risks. I am very confident they will adapt quickly to this new set of measures designed to protect them from transmission of the virus.”

Racing is set to return in England on 1 June and 8 June in Ireland with both countries holding spectator-free meets for the foreseeable future.

Newitt thinking of making Victoria move permanent

Jockey Craig Newitt has conceded he is considering staying in Victoria when Tasmanian racing resumes next month.

Newitt made the move back to Victoria when Tasmania's racing shutdown in April and has had plenty of success, riding 13 winners from 87 rides.

Craig Newitt after winning the Tom Melbourne trophy at Flemington

He told Racenet that his run of success in his new base had led him to consider whether he would go back to Tasmania next month, with racing set to start again on June 13.

“I’ll just keep chipping away here for a while yet because I haven’t got any plans at this stage,” Newitt said. “Things are going pretty well over here at the moment and I’m making a lot more here than I would be back home.”

“I’ve got a few other things I need to consider before I make a final decision but I’ll just stick around here for the time being.”

Jockey outed for four months

Queensland jockey Stanley Watkin has been hit with a four-month suspension for handling charge.

The veteran jockey was issued the lengthy ban for his ride on Hacksaw Ridge (Animal Kingdom {USA}) at Emerald on April 11.

Hacksaw Ridge finished sixth in the 1200 metre Class 6, with the race won by the Todd Austin-trained stablemate Turkey Beach ($9).

Stewards questioned Watkin’s riding between the 800 metres and 300 metres, and he was charged under the rule that dictates that a jockey must take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure a horse is given the best opportunity to win or obtain the best possible finishing position.

Watkin was also quizzed on what the stewards deemed insufficient vigour entering the home straight.

His ban stretches until September 14.

Italian racing returns

Racing in Italy is set to resume on Monday, with purse levels maintained and with Classic action kicking off with the Italian Guineas’, the G3 Premio Regina Elena and the G3 Premio Parioli, on June 14.

The G2 Italian Oaks will be staged on July 5, and the G2 Italian Derby on July 12. Pivotal in securing the resumption of racing were jockey agent Stefano Pugliese, who led a demonstration that drew around 70 trainers, jockeys, grooms and owners in front of the Milan Prefecture; and Giuseppe L’Abbate and Teresa Bellanova of the Ministry of Agriculture.
