Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we zero in at Newcastle on a lightly-tried filly and a colt from the family of Fastnet Rock who are both resuming, while at Hamilton we take a closer look at a 3-year-old from a well-performed Group family.
Newcastle, Race 3, 1.55pm AEST, Hunter Valley Premium Meats Mdn, $31,500, 1500m
The lightly-tried Rules Don’t Apply (Dissident) makes a fresh start here for trainer Chris Waller and a recent trial win at Warwick Farm suggests she is ready to fire first-up. She has yet to finish out of the money in her brief career and looks set to break through.
Dissident, sire of Rules Don't Apply | Standing at Newgate Farm
A $200,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale graduate, Rules Don’t Apply is the first representative of Ostentatious (Shamardal {USA}) and she is a daughter of the G2 Sapphire S. winner Renaissance (Lonhro). She is a sister to the G2 Shorts H. winner Sessions and the family of the Group 1 winners Unworldly (Quest For Fame {GB}) and Gordo (Brief Truce {USA}).
Newcastle, Race 4, 2.35pm AEST, Amalgamated Cash Services Mdn, $31,500, 900m
Meadow Land (Not A Single Doubt) has the benefit of the inside gate in this dash and his debut performance gave a clear indication the colt can go one better. He finished runner-up at Gosford and, following a break, has trialled well ahead of his return.
Meadow Land as a yearling
Trained by Kris Lees, Meadow Land was a $250,000 Easter Sale buy and is out of the Group performer Twirl (Lonhro). She is a sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and champion sire Fastnet Rock with their mother the winner and stakes placegetter Cirque Du Soleil (Danehill {USA}).
Hamilton, Race 4, 2.30pm AEST, bet365 Mdn Plate, $20,700, 1200m
Capital Zous (Zoustar) brings an international pedigree to the table here and one that has already performed well in Australia. The Lindsey Smith-trained 3-year-old hasn’t been to any official trials, but the stable is in hot form and with Michael Rodd in the saddle they look a combination to keep a close eye on.
Capital Zous as a yearling
Purchased for $200,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Capital Zous is out of the unraced Invested Capital (GB) (Zamindar {USA}) and she is a half-sister to the G3 Qld Tattersall’s Cup winner Index Linked (GB) (Dansili {GB}), also successful twice at Listed level. It’s the family of the G1 South Australia Derby winner Leicester (Wanted) and the European Group winners Await The Dawn (USA) (Giant’s Causeway {USA}) and Multiplex (GB) (Danehill {USA}).
