Mungrup Stud to wind down successful operation

5 min read
A variety of factors are behind the Williamson family's decision to close the doors of Mungrup Stud, one of the most successful breeding operations in Western Australia.

The Williamson family announced on Thursday that Mungrup Stud will be wound down over the course of the next three months with a large dispersal sale also to be held at a date yet to be announced.

The 3000 acre nursery is currently home to stallions Playing God, Oratorio, I’m All The Talk and A Lot (USA) and negotiations are currently underway to decide their futures.

“It is very sad for the family, but life doesn’t go in a straight line all the time and we’ve got differing views on where we want to head so it’s the best thing,” Gray Williamson said.

“Everyone can then go in their own direction. It’s time to have a little bit of a breather, it’s a pretty relentless exercise and my health hasn’t been great in the last few years.

“It’s been a bit of a struggle on a number of fronts so we decided it’s best to pull stumps. The land is not being sold though, it’s just the bloodstock.

“We’ll sell 72 weanlings, 85 broodmares, and some yearlings and 2-year-olds. We are in negotiations with the stallions now – for WA we’ve been a pretty fair operation.”

Williamson and his family have driven Mungrup Stud to the height of its success, but circumstances now dictate a change of pace.

“My wife (Jan) and I split up a few years ago and we’ve been running the business together with other family members,” he said.

Mungrup Stud's bloodstock will be sold at a dispersal sale with the date yet to be decided

“It’s a combination of things and not just one. For me, the main issue is my health and I had cancer diagnosed a number of years ago and now I’ve got a few heart issues so I’ve decided to take it a bit easier and smell the roses.

“Like anyone involved in the racing business knows it's a seven day a week job whether you’re reporting, breeding, training or riding or whatever you do.

“It is a relentless business, it takes a toll on you after a while and I’ve been here all of my life, 62 years.

“It is a relentless business, it takes a toll on you after a while and I’ve been here all of my life, 62 years.” – Gray Williamson

“We’ll go out on top and Playing God is going really well. My daughter Ann and (husband) Tom and our other daughter Claire have been an integral part over the last number of years, as have our great staff. That’s why we’ve had great sales and they’ve kept the stud running.”

Mungrup Stud has risen from humble beginnings and Williamson had seen plenty of change within the industry.

Playing God, sire of the G1 Kingston Town S. winner Kay Cee

“From a breeding point of view, I think the x-rays and the governance in regards to selling horses at sales have been issues, as has animal welfare. They have been some of the biggest changes in the time I’ve been here,” Williamson said.

“I was on Aushorse and the TBA for a while and we had some big issues come through then, like artificial insemination and I’m so glad that never got up and allowed us to continue on.”

Major force

Mungrup has been a major player in Western Australia for many years and has produced the winners the G1 Railway S., the G2 Karrakatta Plate, the Perth Magic Millions 2YO and the G2 WA Guineas.

“Very few black type races in WA have escaped being won by a Mungrup horse. It is something we all can be very proud of,” Williamson said.

“Highlights in more recent times include watching Kay Cee, by our sire Playing God, win the G1 Kingston Town, Watch Me Dance, by our sire I'm All The Talk, win the G2 Sires’ Produce and being top vendor at the Perth 2020 Yearling Sale.

Mungrup Stud was the top vendor at the Perth 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale

“We’ve been extremely lucky over the years to have had horses like Metal Storm and I reckon Playing God is walking a line that’s not far behind him.

“We’ve got a lot of great memories and made a lot of great friends because of the racing industry, it’s very sociable and once you’re in it you can enjoy it on a lot of different levels.

“It’s been a great business to have been in. I’m looking forward to putting my feet up though and maybe going away for a couple of months without stressing out about what is happening at the stud.”

Thank you Mungrup

Aquis poised to make Group 1 splash

7 min read
With a connection to a third of the field in the JJ Atkins S. as well as holding part ownership in two key runners in the G1 Stradbroke H. Aquis is well poised to make a splash on what is the only Group 1 raceday of the 2019/20 racing season for its home state of Queensland.

While Aquis is a national and international racing and breeding operation now, it is very much connected to the state it set up its business in five years ago, with the farm at Canungra in south-east Queensland at the heart of its success.

Managing Director Shane McGrath said a Group 1 win in either of the feature races at Eagle Farm on Saturday would be tremendous fillip for the Fung family and the entire Aquis team.

"The Magic Millions Carnival and Queensland Winter Racing Carnival are significant parts of the Australian calendar. For us, Queensland is the heartbeat of the company and it'd be a massive thrill if we could get a Group 1 success. It’s exciting to be part of it," he said.

Given Aquis' amazing success with 2-year-olds this year, highlighted by G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) as well as Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Away Game (Snitzel), who is part-owned by Loretta Fung, it comes as no surprise that it holds such a strong hand in Queensland's only juvenile Group 1 race, the JJ Atkins.

Five of 18 runners in the race have Aquis or the Fung family in their ownership, three of which were bred at the farm, while Aquis also bred one of the other runners.

It has recently bought into leading Queensland 2-year-old Wisdom Of Water (Headwater) as part of a deal with existing owners Golden East Horse which secured future breeding rights for the last-start G3 Ken Russell Classic winner.

"We acquired an interest in the stallion rights of Wisdom Of Water. He's an extremely exciting colt. He's run fast times and he has rated really highly racing against what look a really quality bunch of 2-year-olds in Queensland. He's right at the top of that pecking order," McGrath said.

"He's drawn 10 on Saturday and with the speed outside of him, Trent and Toby (Edmonds) have done a great job with him so far. Robbie (Fradd) knows him really well. We are going in there with a fair degree of optimism."

"We are going in there with a fair degree of optimism." - Shane McGrath

Saffiano (More Than Ready {USA}) will be the flagbearer and carry the aqua and black colours in Saturday's Group 1 test. Bred by Aquis Farm, he was then purchased by an Aquis connected syndicate through Newhaven Park's draft for $600,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and has won one of his three starts.

Saffiano | Image by Brendon Thorne courtesy of AAP Photos

"He's a well-bred horse and will really appreciate the step up to the 1400 metres. Chris Waller has always got a sense of timing this time of year with the Queensland carnival," McGrath said.

"You can imagine he will be running on strong later in the piece and if they run along hard in front, he will be the one to watch to get over the top of them."

Aquis-bred and part-owned Macroura (Snitzel) is considered the leading chance of the fillies in the race having won her three starts to date for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Macroura | Image by Dan Himbrechts courtesy of AAP Photos

"She's a gun and we've had great success with Ciaron and David throughout the year. We've had a phenomenal year with the 2-year-olds," he said.

"She's still on the way up having won a stakes race last start. She's got really solid Sydney form, has got a good gate and a good rider on board. You can see her stalking the speed and she makes her own luck. She's tough, she's three from three and she's definitely one of the favourites."

Beans making it count

There are also two runners by former Aquis stallion Spill The Beans, who died last October and whose first crop has made quite the impression with 10 2-year-old winners, the most of any first-season sire in Australia.

Way Beyond was bred by Aquis, which retained a share when he was sold to Stuart Kendrick for $50,000 at last year's Magic Millions March Yearling Sale.

Way Beyond as a yearling

"Way Beyond is a really good Queensland story. We put the horse with Stuart Kendrick and raced him with a few of the stable stalwarts. He's a homebred and he's got the blinkers on and Spill The Beans himself really appreciated the blinkers," he said.

Kendrick also trains the other 2-year-old by Spill The Beans in the race, Cosmic Gossip, who is part-owned by Loretta Fung.

"Stuart does a good job with his 2-year-olds. Mrs Fung is delighted to have one by her favourite stallion," McGrath said.

"Mrs Fung is delighted to have one by her favourite stallion." - Shane McGrath

Aquis also bred the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained Not An Option (Not A Single Doubt), who has been a Group 2 winner in New Zealand for her owners which include Cambridge Stud's Brendan and Jo Lindsay.

"He's a colt that we bred and sold through Curraghmore Farm as a yearling. We still have the mare Chintz, and we sent her to America. She's residing at Woods Edge Farm and she is in foal to US champion sire Curlin," McGrath said.

"If she could get a Group 1-winning 2-year-old that would be phenomenal. There are several significant New Zealand breeders involved with him and from the mare's profile, it would be enormous."

Not An Option

The many parts of Aquis on display

The six runners with the Aquis connection in the JJ Atkins S. all reflect different parts of the Aquis business, something which is not lost on McGrath.

"From the breeding side, you have the progeny of Chintz, from a stallion perspective, we've got two by Spill The Beans and from our stallion-building side of things, we’ve got Saffiano and Wisdom Of Water. It's a great illustration of the many parts of Aquis within the race," he said.

Aquis' influence also extends to the Stradbroke H. where it holds part ownership in two runners, Dawn Passage (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and Graff (Star Witness).

Dawn Passage | Image by Simon Bullard courtesy of AAP Photos

"Dawn Passage is a leading chance and while he's drawn wide, speaking to the trainers, we are not too concerned with that as he is a free rolling horse. We were happy enough to be drawn outside as he is a horse that needs galloping room," he said.

"He's got a winner's profile, 3-year-olds have a great record and with the weight, he's the one they have to beat."

"He's the one they have to beat." - Shane McGrath

Along with Australian Bloodstock, Aquis bought into Graff, a close relative of Dawn Passage, earlier this year and McGrath thinks the 4-year-old can prove a knockout chance from an inside barrier with a light weight.

Success in the final Group 1 races of the Australian racing season would prove an excellent way to cap a brilliant year for Aquis.

"It’s been a year like no other. It's what you set out to do, but not in your wildest dreams we would have thought we would have had the success we have had. It’s testament to that system we have in place," McGrath said.

Consultation underpins action on equine welfare initiative

7 min read
A key member of an industry-formed independent welfare panel says the response to an issues paper it has released will play a major role in the successful establishment of a proper framework for the improvement of thoroughbred welfare.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Working Group (TAWWG) was formed earlier this year by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia in conjunction with major stakeholders such as the Australian Trainers' Association and the Australian Jockeys' Association.

It consists of an independent four-person panel, chaired by former Victorian premier Dr Denis Napthine, who with the assistance of a steering group of key thoroughbred industry figures, has been charged with identifying issues and formulating recommendations to ensure the lifetime health and welfare of a thoroughbred is a prime consideration for horses leaving the racing and breeding industry.

The panel's formation came in the wake of a series of horse welfare issues, highlighted by a story on equine welfare on the ABC's 7:30 last October which garnered national attention.

Gallery: The Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Working Group

TAWWG's first significant milestone has been reached with the release of a discussion paper, which has identified seven key issues for consideration by those in the industry.

"There's certainly been a lot of work done within the panel. You can see the fruit of that work in terms of identifying what the key issues are and what are the key questions that the panel is looking to get answers to," panel member Jack Lake told TDN AusNZ.

"It’s now a matter of firstly seeking input from the broader community but then focusing on those key stakeholders, not only in racing, but in the broader horse community, and developing understanding around what their priorities are."

"It’s now a matter of firstly seeking input from the broader community but then focusing on those key stakeholders, not only in racing, but in the broader horse community, and developing understanding around what their priorities are." - Jack Lake

The consultative process, which involves public submissions taken until July 24, will be followed up with further discussions by the panel with key stakeholders and interested parties.

Lake, a senior advisor on agricultural policy in the Hawke, Keating and Rudd federal governments, sits in the panel along with vet and former politician Dr Napthine, the RSPCA's Chief Science and Strategy Officer Dr Bidda Jones, and experienced vet and former director of the Australian Veterinarian Association Dr Ken Jacobs.

"When you combine the panel's experience with the practical expertise of the steering group, then you have a wealth of knowledge and experience that is brought to bear," Lake said.

"But the consultative process is really important in this. I see that process as identifying and engaging with key interest groups and there will be hopefully a broad community view from people who want to have a view on it."

Consultation crucial to process

The process is initially inviting submissions broadly and the panel will then seek advice from stakeholders and subject matter experts for further comments on particular aspects.

"We will be engaging with those particular groups and will also looking for expert input into various issues as well. We won't be waiting for everyone to come to us. We will be going out and engaging with those interest groups and stakeholders as part of the process," he said.

"We will be going out and engaging with those interest groups and stakeholders as part of the process." - Jack Lake

"It's important to engage with those groups who have an intimate knowledge and understanding of the various aspects of the policy framework of what we are looking at. Whether that be a PRA like Racing Victoria, or Equestrian Australia of the Australian Thoroughbred Sports Horse Association, there are a whole range of organisations and individuals as well, who have expertise who will significantly value add to the process."

Engagement and consultation with a number of groups will be of significant value to the process

The seven issues identified as part of the TAWWG paper are:

- What is good welfare

· Thoroughbred breeding

- Traceability

- Programs for horses leaving racing and breeding

- Regulatory framework

- Humane processing of horses

- Research and Development

The first of the seven issues covered in the paper 'What Is Good Horse Welfare' is an extremely important one, according to Lake. With the intention that recommendations established through this process can be put into law, a clear understanding of the community standards which underpin the horse welfare discussion is all important.

"Firstly, the standards and guidelines have to reflect contemporary science, they have to be science-based. Secondly they have to reflect community expectations or standards. What are the community expectations around how animals are treated? That's why that question is in there. Community attitudes change and so it’s an important starting point for this sort of process," Lake said.

The standards and guidelines have to reflect contemporary science and to reflect community expectations or standards

Panel working towards spring deadline

The challenge for the TAWWG panel having undertaken that level of consultation, will be then to work through the process of collating the feedback to formulate recommendations, something that is expected to occur by the end of 2020.

"We are working to a loose deadline of the spring. It will certainly be this year, but late this year, These processes are always a challenge because the process itself identifies a whole range of issues that may be important but might sit outside the frames of reference," Lake said.

"The panel has got to address the terms of reference because that is what it has been asked to do. There might be an opportunity to identify areas where there are additional issues that need to be addressed. If things present and we identify areas that we think warrant work or further research, we aren’t precluded from doing that."

"If things present and we identify areas that we think warrant work or further research, we aren’t precluded from doing that." - Jack Lake

With such a strong background in public policy, Lake is very familiar of the process of formulating into recommendations which can then establish standards and guidelines. He said previous work done in this area over a decade ago may prove useful in helping this process.

"There was a whole lot of work done from about 2005 onwards and that was called the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy. That process was really about developing a set of standards and guidelines that provide for the welfare of animals," he said.

"It’s really a matter of someone taking the initiative to revisit that process and Thoroughbred Breeders Australia have taken that initiative, along with the jockeys and the trainers, to revisit it, Work has been done and I feel the model is still the right model.

What is also key, according to Lake, is the willingness of state governments to make the necessary legislative change to ensure standards become a legal requirement

"The model is, you develop standards, which become enforceable and you have guidelines alongside of that, which are not enforceable. It’s then a matter for each state, because they are responsible for animal welfare, to put legislation in place to make those standards enforceable. You then have an enforceable regime that puts a floor in the standard of care of horses."

What is also key, according to Lake, is the willingness of state governments to make the necessary legislative change to ensure standards become a legal requirement.

"The model is a good one, but it takes a level of effort on the part of each state to draft the relevant legislation, get it through their respective parliaments and then you have the system. It's worth a try to get it back on the agenda and there is a level of goodwill around various state governments to get that to happen," he said.

Those wishing to make submissions, the can be emailed to secretariat@thoroughbredwelfareinitiative.org.au or posted to TAWWG, PO Box 149, Canterbury, NSW 2193.

Inglis again has the highest of expectations for its Ready2Race Sale, with entries now open for the October auction.

The sale is scheduled to be a physical auction at Riverside Stables on October 20 and is shaping as the best-ever in terms of quality, according to Inglis’ New South Wales Bloodstock Manager Chris Russell.

“Our Ready2Race Sale continues to grow in stature each year and that’s due to the high quality of product the vendors are producing,’’ he said.

“Take last year, we had the likes of George Moore, Lok Lor, Yulong, Gu Tao, Krit Chittaseni and Caspar Fownes, some of Asia’s biggest players, on the buyers’ list.

“Just as significant was the huge increase of the domestic buying bench with the likes of Darby Racing, Anthony Freedman, Arrowfield, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Aquis, Bjorn Baker, Bob Peters, Kim Waugh, Anton Koolman, Ellerton and Zahra and Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr to name but a few all on the buyers’ list as well.

“The quality of early stock already confirmed for this sale is stronger than I have seen during my time at Inglis and I’d encourage participants in this part of the market to take this sale very seriously indeed.

“The Inglis Ready2Race Sale has produced 27 per cent more individual winners in Hong Kong since 2018 than the next best sale in Australia and it is facts like these that mean that all the leading buyers will be looking to be participants in our sale.”

Breeze-ups

Breeze-ups will take place at Seymour on September 11, Eagle Farm on September 15, Warwick Farm on September 18 and Cambridge on September 21 in the lead-up to the sale, as well as a second-chance breeze back at Warwick Farm the Friday prior to the auction on October 16.

High-quality video of each breeze will be available on the Inglis website within days of the gallops. Entries for the Inglis Ready2Race Sale will close at 5pm on Monday, August 3.

Inspections will begin at Riverside on October 16 with a champagne brunch and parade of 2-year-olds two days later.

NZ racing to be back in action ahead of time

Written by Paul Vettise

The New Zealand thoroughbred industry has received welcome news with racing to resume earlier than anticipated and the hope that it will be conducted under normal circumstances with patrons on course.

Racing was shut down by the coronavirus pandemic on March 24 and will return with a Counties Racing Club meeting at Pukekohe Park on Saturday, June 20.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) announced the move on Thursday based on feedback from trainers, who have indicated they had horses ready to return to the track sooner than the planned resumption in early July.

“We are delighted we can resume earlier than originally expected,” NZTR Chief Executive Bernard Saundry said.

Bernard Saundry

“Our first race meetings since lockdown will be held with owners being able to attend and, with the expectation that the country may soon move to level one, it might be that full crowds will be able to be on course from the outset.”

The meeting scheduled to Counties is an addition to the original calendar and will carry the same NZ$15,000 stakes across the board, with free nomination and acceptance for all starters and payment back to 14th place in each race.

“RITA and the code have worked together to make this earlier start possible,” Saundry said.

The Canterbury Jockey Club meeting originally programmed for Friday, July 3, will now move to Saturday, June 27.

Racing in the Central Districts will get underway, as planned, at Awapuni on Saturday, July 4, which will also see the second northern meeting of the resumption period at Te Rapa.

“As we build up to this earlier return to racing NZTR would like to thank all industry participants – our clubs, owners, trainers, jockeys, trackwork riders and stablehands – for doing what was required during lockdown,” Saundry said.

“The industry also worked together to ensure that protocols were followed when horses returned to their respective training facilities. "

The industry has gone through tumultuous times since the intervention of COVID-19 with the Government stepping in with a NZ$72.5 million announced last month by Racing Minister Winston Peters last month.

Winston Peters

The package included NZ$50 million for the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA), with NZ$26 million of that to pay its outstanding supplier bill and remain solvent.

RITA has subsequently taken drastic steps to rein in operational costs and has cut 230 jobs at the TAB including 150 permanent staff. That action will save an estimated NZ$11 million annually.

Another NZ$20 million from the Provincial Growth Fund is going toward the construction of all-weather synthetic racing tracks at Awapuni and at Riccarton Park in Christchurch.

Spendthrift moves for top colt

B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm has acquired a majority ownership interest in the undefeated 3-year-old colt Authentic (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}), the likely favourite in Saturday’s G1 Santa Anita Derby.

Spendthrift has joined forces with Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables, who has remained in the ownership group. SF Racing, Fred Hertrich, John Fielding and Golconda Stables have sold their respective interests.

“We are very excited to join an accomplished team on such a talented and promising colt as Authentic,” Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey said. “We believe Into Mischief is still in the early stages of his successes, and we are hopeful Authentic can be a significant part. This colt possesses all the signature attributes we have come to know from Into Mischief, and we feel strongly that those attributes are going to carry on through his sons in the breeding shed.”

Fee payment options

Brighthill Farm has lowered its service fees for 2020 and has also introduced new payment options for breeders to assist them in the current testing times.

The Waikato farm has announced cuts across the board with Preferment (NZ) to stand at NZ$12,500 + GST, Eminent (Ire) will be offered at NZ$7500 + GST and the third member of the roster Dalghar (Fr) will stand at NZ$3000 +GST.

In addition, Brighthill has also unveiled payment initiatives whereby breeders can either take advantage of a further 10 per cent discount off the fee on the return of a 42-day positive test or stagger the fee over six monthly payments.

Preferment (NZ) | Standing at Brighthill Farm

“The whole thing is to try and give people confidence to continue breeding so in combination with the fee reductions we’re giving people a couple of options to find something that fits for them,” Studmaster Nick King said.

“The decision they make now will meet the market place in two years’ time or a racecourse a little bit after. We would all like to be optimistic and figure the world will be a much better place then.

“New Zealand tends to have service fees that are very, very competitive anyway, but this is an exceptional year and we’re reacting to that and helping breeders with these two options. "

Lunar lights up

Lunar Light (Akeed Mofeed {GB}) sold for $160,000 to Spendthrift Australia during the Magic Millions Online Sale.

Lunar Light

Offered by Goldin Farms, the 3-year-old filly has won three of her 10 starts and finished third in the G2 Angus Armanasco S. at Caulfield earlier this year.

Bidding for the star lot Spinning Memories (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}), the recent winner of the G3 Prix du Plaid Royale, had reached $505,000 by 6.30pm with bidding on the mare, also offered by Goldin, closing at10pm on Thursday night.

Grand servant honoured

The Australian Turf Club is honouring one of Australian racing’s most successful and popular administrators with the inaugural running of the Listed Bob Charley AO S. at Randwick on Saturday.

Charley is a former Chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, inaugural Chairman of the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Board and inaugural Chairman of the Australian Racing Board.

He went on to hold a number of prominent positions in the racing industry, including Vice-Chairman of the Asian Racing Federation and a member of the governing council of the International Conference of Horse Racing Authorities. Since 2011, he has also been the Chairman of the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame.

For his service to thoroughbred racing and the community, Charley was appointed in 2001 as an Officer Of The Order of Australia.

Costa confident

Trainer Michael Costa believes Supergiant (NZ) (Red Giant {USA}) has improved since his bold front-running victory in the G3 Gunsynd Classic.

Michael Costa

He is confident the 3-year-old will again be hard to roll in the G3 Rough Habit Plate at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Costa said the step up to 2200 metres will be ideal for Supergiant, who had the G1 Queensland Derby on his program before COVID-19 forced a revamped carnival.

Riverdene acquires Sizzling

Riverdene Stud’s roster has been bolstered by the arrival of Group 1 winner Sizzling.

He has been relocated to the Wagga farm following six seasons at Newgate and will stand at $6600 inc GST alongside McLaren ($6600 inc GST), Strada ($1100 inc GST) and Va Pensiero ($3300 inc GST).

Sizzling standing at Riverdene Stud in 2020

A son of Snitzel, Sizzling won the G1 TJ Smith S., the G2 Champagne Classic and the G2 BRC Sires’ Produce S. as a 2-year-old and the following season added the G2 Queensland Guineas to his record.

Sizzling has produced 80 individual winners with his leading representative to date the Listed Galilee Series Final winner Secret Blaze who has also been placed at Group 2 and 3 level.

Pinhooker’s paradise

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling Sale has proved a fertile ground for pinhookers and the June 11 to 21 auction on Gavelhouse Plus promises to deliver more of the same.

Over the last few editions of the Karaka May Sale and its predecessor the National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, there is a lengthy list of pinhook purchases who fetched significantly higher prices at the National Yearling Sales Series or Ready to Run Sale.

Gingernuts (NZ)

Multiple Group 1 winners Gingernuts (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Yourdeel (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}) are two prominent members of that group.

All weanlings offered at the National Weanling Sale will be eligible for the lucrative Karaka Million Series featuring two NZ$1 million races available for graduates as 2 and 3-year-olds, plus the NZ$100,000 CollinsonForex Karaka Cup for the duration of their career.

To nominate weanlings, visit NZB’s online portal at portal.nzb.co.nz. For full instructions on how to use the online entry.

Sale dates confirmed

Arqana, Tattersalls Ireland and Osarus have agreed on revised dates for their 2020 August and September yearling sales.

The Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale will run from September 21 to 23, beginning one day earlier than originally planned. Arqana will shift its flagship yearling sale, initially set for August 15 to 17, to September 24 to 26.

Osarus’s September Yearling Sale will be amalgamated with the Arqana October Yearling Sale on October 19 to 23, with a small number of Osarus yearlings also to be rerouted to the Arqana Autumn Sale on November 16 to 18.

Breeders’ Cup series

The Breeders’ Cup has announced its June and July schedule of races for the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, with highlights that include a pair of automatic qualifiers for the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic and four berths on offer at the Royal Ascot meeting.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, now in its 14th year, is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting spots and fees paid into a corresponding race in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held this year on November 6 and 7 at Keeneland.

Looking Ahead - June 5

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we like the chances at Taree of a 2-year-old going one better on a last-start runner-up finish and a debutante with winning trial form. At Donald, an I Am Invincible juvenile from a strong North American black-type family has our attention.

Taree, Race 1, 12pm AEST, Manning River Hotel H., $20,000, 1250m

Zaru (Rubick) was a sound enough fourth on debut before Christmas and then went for a break and returned on his home Taree track last month. The gelding gave a bold account of himself to finish runner-up and, with the benefit of that outing, looks poised to go one better.

Rubick, sire of Zaru | Standing at Coolmore

He is the first foal of Zaboss (Street Boss {USA}), who was successful on three occasions, and she is out of the Zabeel (NZ) mare Zachelle (NZ). She is a half-sister to the Listed Singapore 3YO Challenge S. winner, Itmaybeyou (NZ) (Howbaddouwantit {USA}), who was also stakes placed five times, with multiple Group 1 winner and sire Lawman (Fr) also featuring in the pedigree.

Taree, Race 2, 12.35pm AEST, TAB Mdn Plate, $20,000, 1000m

Trojan Angel (Time For War) trialled twice last month and indicated that she was ready for a bold debut showing when successful over 1000 metres at Wyong. She was ridden there by Grant Buckley and he will take the mount again.

Trojan Angel as a yearling

The filly boasts a speedy background with her dam Helen’s Angel (Hidden Dragon) a two-time sprint winner and she is a sister to Hidden Kisses, who won eight times with her career highlight a victory in the G3 Toy Show H. Further back in the family is the G1 Doomben 10,000 winner Gay Gauntlet (Red Gauntlet {GB}).

Donald, Race 2, 1pm AEST, TAC Be Races Ready Mdn, $31,500, 1000m

Sure Am Invincible (I Am Invincible) was a $200,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale graduate and hails from a strong North American family. She is a daughter of Travesura (USA) (Limehouse {USA}), who was a smart 2-year-old and won the G3 Hollywood Park Miesque S.

Sure Am Invincible as a yearling

She is out of a half-sister to the stakes-winner Camachtmagnificent (USA) (Mr Nugget {USA}) and their dam Kerygma (USA) (Drone {USA}) won 15 races, including nine at Listed level. Sure Am Invincible hasn’t been to any official trials, but has plenty of speed in her pedigree and looks worth taking a chance on.
