Hussonet's rich legacy flows through his daughters

5 min read
Hussonet's (USA) tremendous legacy to the Australian thoroughbred industry since his arrival from Chile 17 years ago continues to grow with two of his daughters producing Group 1 winners at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

It's been over four years since Hussonet died at age 25 at Cornerstone Stud, where he spent his final five years as a stallion, having previously made a significant impact at Arrowfield Stud, whose chairman John Messara had purchased him out of Chile as a seven-time Champion Sire.

As a sire, he produced 30 stakes winners in Australia, highlighted by seven-time Group 1 winner Weekend Hussler as well as Eagle Falls and Reaan, while he also had Gold Trail win at Group 1 level in New Zealand.

But as a broodmare sire, he is making an even bigger impact, highlighted by his rare double on Saturday as Rothfire (Rothesay) won the G1 JJ Atkins S. and Tyzone (Written Tycoon) claimed the G1 Stradbroke H.

The late Hussonet (USA)

That pair joined dual Group 1-winning 2-year-old King's Legacy (Redoute's Choice) as top-flight winners out of Hussonet mares in Australia this season. Other names on the overall list of elite racehorses featuring him as a broodmare sire include triple Group 1 winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock), South African star Soqrat (Epaulette), dual Group 1-winner Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), Hong Kong Chairman's Sprint Prize winners Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) and Ivictory (Mossman) and G1 CF Orr S. winner Manuel (Commands).

Arrowfield Stud has benefitted significantly from Hussonet's ongoing influence as a broodmare sire and has between 15 and 20 of his daughters as part of its current broodmare band along with standing Pariah, who is out of a Hussonet mare himself.

Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer said the influence of Hussonet blood in Australia is no real surprise when you look at the quality of his own pedigree and how well it matches as an outcross to the dominant sirelines in Australia.

Jon Freyer with The Autumn Sun

"I think it's probably had so much success because it's such a wonderful outcross. He's a direct son of Mr Prospector out of a great mare and that in itself has stood him in good stead," Freyer said.

"He was a great sire himself. He only came to us midway through his career, but he was a tremendous stallion, capable of getting a champion, and his daughters are perfectly suited to all the good sires of recent times."

Stats back-up pedigree matches

The stats paint an emphatic picture of the impact of Hussonet broodmares in Australia.

The nick of Champion sire Redoute's Choice with Hussonet mares has produced 16 winners from 20 starters, including six stakes winners for a remarkable 30 per cent stakes winners to runners record.

Hussonet's mares have produced 11 winners, including three stakes winners to another Arrowfield resident Not A Single Doubt, while the stats with Coolmore Champion Fastnet Rock are seven winners, including one stakes winner, and six winners, including two stakes winners, from eight runners, with former Widden Stud stallion Sebring.

Table: Hussonet (USA) mares - Best nicks by stakes winners percentage

Nicks with fellow Australian-bred or based sires such as I Am Invincible, Choisir, Swiss Ace, Beneteau, Stratum, Mossman, Commands, Epaulette, Perfectly Ready, Towkay, So You Think (NZ) and now Written Tycoon and Rothesay, have also produced stakes winners.

Freyer said the general physical match between Hussonet and these Australian sires was a positive, but the success also owed much to the strength of the American-bred sire's own bloodlines.

"His daughters tend to be like him in that they are neater, quality type mares and physically that suits a lot of the bigger scopier stallions like Redoute's Choice. He neatens and sharpens up those horses a little bit," he said.

"Physically they are compatible, but more importantly, it’s that Mr Prospector factor. There is probably no better sire than him and with Hussonet being out of a great and very fast mare by Raja Baba, it's good blood. It’s great blood for any of those Danehill-Northern Dancer-line stallions."

Match a secret to success

Sourcing an outcross stallion whose mares can match up so well with a farm's existing stallion offering is a strategy which has yielded considerable success for Arrowfield.

"If you can find those marelines that are compatible with the stallion you have, it’s a tremendous headstart," Freyer said.

Pierro | Standing at Coolmore

"Pierro is a great example of that. He thrives on the Redoute's Choice-line mares. That's one of the issues we have had with our stallions, with Snitzel and the like, a lot of the best blood is incompatible with them, because they are Redoute's or Fastnet Rock-line horses. Having access to a horse like Hussonet and now his daughters is a tremendous asset to the farm."

Similarly, the win of Tyzone in the Stradbroke is a timely one for Arrowfield, who will stand his sire Written Tycoon in 2020. He was sourced from Victoria with his compatibility to both the Redoute's Choice-line and Hussonet mares in mind.

"We’ve thought all along that the Mr Prospector blood would go well with Written Tycoon. That seems to be a great nick. A lot of our mares by Hussonet or carrying Hussonet blood are going to Written Tycoon this year," Freyer said.

Written Tycoon | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

The ongoing success of the Hussonet line is another tribute to the foresight of Messara when he plucked the stallion out of Haras De Pirque in Chile nearly 20 years ago. It's a decision which is set to have a long-term impact on Australian breeding for many years to come.

"A lot of those decisions have far reaching consequences, bringing a horse like him out here from Chile," Freyer said.

"Hussonet will be a name that will be seen in pedigrees for the next 30-40 years. You will look back and he’ll be there, whereas some die out quickly. He's been so successful and so influential, he’ll be there in many generations to come, I'm certain."

Communication key to Star's ongoing success

5 min read
In Monday’s Five minutes with Denise Martin, she labelled a Territories (Ire) filly as a stand-out among her yearling purchases. TDN AusNZ followed up in greater depth with the Star Thoroughbreds principal about her 2020 sale activity, business during COVID-19 and an outstanding weekend on the track.

It’s been business as usual for leading syndicator Star Thoroughbreds through testing economic times with Denise Martin adamant that regular communication with owners has been a key driver.

She has remained in constant contact with existing owners and those new to Star Thoroughbreds throughout the COVID-19 outbreak and tailored incremental payment plans for clients accordingly.

Martin has been active in the yearling market in 2020 with the ongoing success of Star’s familiar silks of purple and white stars on racetracks across Australia continuing to drive business.

That was again evident again at the weekend with Chris Waller-trained winners in New South Wales and Queensland and very nearly in Victoria as well.

Denise usually purchases between 20 and 25 yearlings each year

“I’ve bought 23 yearlings this year and usually buy between 20 and 25 and might have looked to get a buy one or two more, but circumstances nationally put a halt to that so I’m comfortable in this environment,” Martin said.

“Clearly, circumstances have changed for everybody. I think the most important thing in the last three months is to engage in dialogue with current and prospective owners.

“I think the most important thing in the last three months is to engage in dialogue with current and prospective owners.” – Denise Martin

“Given that not everybody is enjoying great circumstances at the moment, I have ensured that we have discussed our new horses with people who have made a commitment to purchase and we finalise ownership one horse at a time.

“We space that weeks apart so people are not being presented with invoices all at once. I think that’s the way to go about it and knowing our owners as well as we do, people are comfortable going along quietly.

“It’s marginally slower, but we have been really satisfied with how things have gone. I think most owners now feel that we are coming out of a difficult time reasonably quickly and looking forward to carnival racing later on in the year with really nice horses.”

Star Thoroughbreds’ colours were carried to victory at Randwick on Saturday by Achiever (Pride Of Dubai) and Dealmaker (Dundeel {NZ}) and at Eagle Farm by Mangione (Fiorente {Ire}).

The import Masaff (Ire) (Raven’s Pass {USA}) went close to adding to the tally when the 4-year-old finished runner-up at Flemington.

“Had the European horse Masaff, who we think is quite a talent, won in Melbourne we would have had four city winners in three states,” Martin said. “We were quite satisfied though, we had three wins and two seconds from eight to the races.”

“Had the European horse Masaff, who we think is quite a talent, won in Melbourne we would have had four city winners in three states.” - Denise Martin

The 2-year-old Achiever started the ball rolling when he opened his winning account at his fifth appearance after banking a cheque in all previous starts.

“He’s an interesting horse and Brett Howard, who helps me at the yearling sales, found him for me at the Inglis Premier Sale. He was an eye-catching colt from the outset and I’d seen him several times, but on the morning of the sale he had a wrap on his hind leg,” Martin said.

“I was quite crushed thinking perhaps he had an injury so I asked vet Ross Alexander to x-ray him, but we didn’t do that before he went through the ring and he was passed in.

Achiever as a yearling

“A number of my best horses have been passed in, including Sebring and Noire, and when he was passed in for $90,000 I asked Brett to speak to the vendor (Erinvale Thoroughbreds) and we were advised it was a soft tissue, minor injury and x-rayed as that.

“We offered $80,000 for the colt and I was thrilled to be able to take him home at that price. He has tremendous quality behind him, his mother is a daughter of Circles Of Gold and she is quite legendary in Australian racing.

“The dam Lady Circles has already produced the Group 3 winner Decircles and I always liked Pride Of Dubai as a horse when he was racing.”

“The dam Lady Circles has already produced the Group 3 winner Decircles and I always liked Pride Of Dubai as a horse when he was racing.” – Denise Martin

Circles Of Gold won the G1 Australian Oaks and is the dam of Group 1 winners and sires Elvstroem and Haradasun and Hveger (Danehill), dam of seven-time Group 1 winner and sire Highland Reel (Ire).

“Dealmaker has been the perennial bridesmaid, but he loves the Randwick mile and when he gets free air in the straight he can find the line very strongly,” Martin said. “It was a deserved win and quite able to go and win more races.”

Dealmaker as a yearling

A multiple Group placegetter, Dealmaker was a $160,000 purchase out of Arrowfield Stud’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale draft and is out of Sport Chic (Redoute’s Choice), a half-sister to the G2 Guy Walter S. winner Alassio (Foxwedge).

“Mangione is a horse that improves during preparations and distance and he was strong to the line as well,” Martin said.

He posted the fourth win of his career at Eagle Farm over 1815 metres and was bought for $150,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Yarraman Park Stud. He is from the Group 1 winning family of Burst (Marauding {NZ}) and Bush Padre (Redding {NZ}).

Breeder celebrates with Proisir colt

Sydney breeder and owner Tony Falcone enjoyed Group success with Proisir during his racing career and retained an interest in the stallion on his retirement to Rich Hill Stud.

On Monday, his colours were carried to victory by a second crop son of Proisir when the John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes-trained Scenic Warrior (NZ) produced a gallant performance to win the Iron Jack Plate at Warwick Farm.

He disputed the pace on the outside of Gunnamatta (Headwater) and shook that colt off in the closing 250 metres to score by 0.8l with Prompt Prodigy (NZ) (More Than Ready {USA}) and Yulong Code (Zoustar) both closing late to be the next pair home.

Scenic Warrior was making his second appearance after finishing fifth from the outside gate at Canterbury Park last month.

Watch: Scenic Warrior (NZ) win at Warwick Farm

“We would have been a little bit disappointed if he had been beaten, let me tell you but he was in for the fight,” Michael Hawkes said.

“He’s a really nice horse going forward and was a little stiff at Canterbury. He drew a bad barrier and had to go too far back and hit the line. We thought he would run well and he did.

“These colours have been pretty successful with us for the Falcone family and Divine Prophet was the last good horse.

“These colours have been pretty successful with us for the Falcone family and Divine Prophet was the last good horse.” – Michael Hawkes

“He’ll more than likely head to the paddock and he’ll come back a nice type for the spring.”

A brother to Proisir, Divine Prophet won three races, including the G1 Caulfield Guineas, and is now resident at Aquis.

Scenic Warrior was ridden by Tim Clark, who said the colt had taken improvement from his first outing and stuck to his task gamely in the run home.

Tim Clark

“He was able to put himself a bit closer to the speed and he battled it out really well. He’s got more to give as he’s still a little bit immature.”

Scenic Warrior is a brother to Napster (NZ), who won two of his first three starts for Falcone before his sale for $1.2 million to Hong Kong interests.

They are out of Pemba Nepali (Domesday), who is from the family of the former champion colt and four-time Group 1 winner Trapeze Artist, now standing at Widden Stud. Crawl (Dr Grace {NZ}) and Marching (Commands) are other top-flight winners in the pedigree.

Proisir won three of his seven starts when trained by Gai Waterhouse, including the G3 Spring S. He was also runner-up to Dundeel (NZ) in both the G1 Spring Champion S. and the G1 Randwick Guineas.

His best representative to date is the G3 Bonecrusher S. winner Riodini (NZ) while his daughters Vancooga (NZ) and Feel The Rush (NZ) finished second and third respectively in this season’s G1 New Zealand Oaks.

Proisir's daughter Levante (NZ), who suffered her only defeat in five starts when she finished second in the G2 Wellington S.after missing the start by 5l, is another leading spring prospect.

Hunter Valley stallion parade formats altered

3 min read

Written by Bren O'Brien

Hunter Valley's stallion farms have altered their stallion parade formats in 2020, with a six-day open house format to replace the usual one or two-day parade days.

The format replicates that used at Kentucky and Newmarket during their annual broodmare sales periods and will run from Tuesday August 18 until Sunday August 23.

Each stud will put its own arrangements in place of how their parades will be conducted, whether it be by invitational appointment or at fixed times through each day, but the format will allow studs to successfully comply with any COVID-19 protocols that may still be in place, and ensure social distancing.

Maurice (Jpn) parades at Arrowfield Stud

The studs believe that the new format will allow breeders to inspect stallions more closely, with a better chance to speak with staff from the relevant studs. With crowds distributed across the days, it will also allow breeders to set their own schedule, subject to the timetables set by the studs.

"Parade week is an important annual event for the Hunter Valley and sees a large influx of visitors each year," a statement from the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association said.

"Our leading stallion farms have together shown great initiative by allowing breeders the continued opportunity to visit these wonderful properties and see their impressive array of stallions. We hope that breeders from around the country can safely and responsibly travel to the Hunter in August and enjoy these open days."

There will be plenty of interest in the new stallion arrivals at the major Hunter Valley studs ahead of the 2020 breeding season.

Brutal (NZ) (yellow cap) | Standing at Newgate Farm

Newgate will debut Brutal (NZ), Cosmic Force and Tassort, while Coolmore also has a trio of freshmen in Calyx (GB), Magna Grecia (Ire) and Yes Yes Yes.

Arrowfield will debut Castelvecchio, with Written Tycoon making his first appearance in the Hunter Valley having moved from Victoria, while Exceedance will create plenty of interest at Vinery, as will Microphone and Too Darn Hot (GB) at Darley.

Pierata debuts at Aquis; Murrurundi, Zousain has joined Widden Stud's roster, while Unite And Conquer will be on display at Kingstar.

The stars of the parades will be stallions of the calibre of three-time Australian champion Snitzel at Arrowfield, along with Exceed And Excel at Darley, Fastnet Rock at Coolmore and I Am Invincible at Yarraman Park.

Details of the arrangement of the stallion parade formats will be confirmed by the individual studs over the coming weeks.

Love gives O’Brien his sixth 1000 Guineas

All Aidan O’Brien needed to win his fourth Group 1 1000 Guineas in the last five years was one thing –Galileo’s (Ire) Love (Ire) - on Sunday at Newmarket. The only entry for her trainer in the 1000 Guineas and only for her sire in the weekend’s two classics, Love proved to be their perfect weapon with a 4.25l romp in the 1600 metre race.

The filly’s flashy face made her an easy horse to watch as she raced in midpack down the centre of the track, closest to the nearside rail of any horse in the field. Cloak Of Spirits (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was the pacesetter with the next group of fillies running five abreast about a length behind her.

In the final 400 metres Final Song (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was the first to challenge the pace setter with Europe’s Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) also joining in. Keeping her spot in the centre of the track, Love also entered the fray under Ryan Moore and quickly put an end to the battle as she took the lead.

The filly pulled clear with 200 metres to leave the field behind her to battle it out for second. Cloak Of Spirits was able to hold on to second by a head from Quadrilateral with Final Song another length back in fourth.

The winner of last year’s Group 1 Moyglare Stud S., the Cooolmore bred and owned Love also led home a notable finish for Pivotal (GB), whose daughters produced the top two finishers. Galileo could also boast of his own prowness as a sire-of-sires after the result with third placed Quadrilateral by his son Frankel (GB).

Trainer Aidan O’Brien had to celebrate his sixth career 1000 Guineas victory at Ballydoyle in Ireland but having to miss Love winning Sunday, a day after he finished second in the 2000 Guineas with Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never {USA}), didn’t keep him from planning the filly’s next move.

“She’s a special filly and we always thought she would get much further than a mile,” he told Thoroughbred Daily News. “She showed she got a mile last year and we always thought we’d start here and then maybe go on to the [July 4] Oaks. Ryan gave her a beautiful ride, very uncomplicated, he got her in a lovely rhythm and I couldn’t have been happier really. He had her well-balanced into the dip, she’s very genuine and she had her head out and ran to the line.”

Love (Ire) is one of 84 Group 1 winners by Galileo (Ire) (pictured)

Love is the latest success story for the Galileo x Pivotal cross with the cross’s six Group 1 winners also including last year’s dual-1000 Guineas winner Hermosa (Ire).

Proving to be another bargain after the $1500 paid for the dam of yesterday’s 2000 Guineas winner Kameko (USA) (Kitten’s Joy {USA}), Love’s dam Pikaboo (GB) was purchased for just 50,000 gns the last time she went through the ring in 2012.

Now the dam of six winners from six to race, Pikaboo has produced four Group winners, including Love’s full sisters Flattering and Peach Tree. The mare’s second-best foal is the Group 2 winning Lucky Kristale (GB) (Lucky Story {USA}), who was born the year before her dam sold.

Street Sense’s McKinzie wins seventh Graded S.

Adding to his already lofty resume, McKinzie brushed off an uncharacteristically bad race last out when giving trainer Bob Baffert his sixth Grade 2 Triple Bend S. victory on Sunday at Santa Anita.

Racing in a small field in the 1400 metre race, McKinzie broke well and found a spot in the pack just behind the leaders.

The small field was tightly packed from the start with McKinzie running three wide and at times running last just a few lengths off the leaders. Confidently handled by regular jockey Mike Smith, McKinzie rolled up to the leaders in mid-turn before Smith let his mount fly in the stretch. McKinzie did the work from there, securing the lead from Fashionably Fast to win by 1.5l under a hand ride for his seventh career graded stakes victory.

Making his graded stakes debut, Fashionably Fast (USA) (Lucky Pulpit {USA}) put on a good showing to battle with McKinzie for the lead and hold off Dark Vader (USA) (Tale Of Ekati {USA}) in the closing stages to finish second – ending the California-bred gelding’s six race win streak.

Running exclusively in stakes company since making his winning debut in October 2017, McKinzie secured his first Grade 1 victory in his second start when winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity. One of the early favourites for the Kentucky Derby, McKinzie was forced to skip the race but has proved to be one of the best horses in Bob Baffert’s barn over the last four seasons with 13 top two finishes in stakes company since 2017 with four Grade 1 victories in his career.

A $170,000 Keeneland September buy by Karl Watson, Michael Pegram, and Paul Weitman, McKinzie is one of six winners out of Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 runner-up Runway Model (USA) (Petionville {USA}). Though the most accomplished of his family, McKinzie is joined by 20 other stakes horses under his first three dams.

Liberty Beach wins again for Cable Bay

Cable Bay’s (Ire) Group 3 winner Liberty Beach (GB) added a third stakes win to her resume on Saturday with a victory in the Listed Betway EBF Cecil Frail Fillies’ S.

Racing keenly early in the 1200 metre race, jockey Jason Hart tried to settle Liberty Beach just behind the leader in the early stages. Liberty Beach finally quit fighting her jockey with 500 metres left to run and soon got down to the business of challenging Maid In India (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) for the lead.

The duel continued until they were in the final 100 metres with Liberty Beach taking over with 50 metres to go as a pack of four other fillies joined Maid In India behind the leader. The wire came just in time for Liberty Beach with the filly winning by 0.75l over Queen Jo Jo (GB) (Gregorian {Ire}) with Maid In India surviving the swarm to finish third.

Liberty Beach is out of a half-sister to Group 3 winner La Rioja and from the family of Group 2 winner Eastern Aria (UAE) (Halling {USA}) and four-time stakes winner Shivalik Star (Ind) (Shamardal {USA}).

Manuela De Vega leads top day for Lope De Vega

Only half hour after Summer House (GB) led home a 1-2 finish for Lope De Vega (Ire) in a competitive 2400 metre maiden at Lingfield, Manuela De Vega (Ire) went one better with a Group 3 victory in the Betway Pinnacle S. at Haydock.

Second in the Group 1 Grossier Preis von Bayern to end her 3-year-old season, Manuela De Vega wasn’t going to let victory escape her in the 2300 metre race on Sunday. The filly went straight to the lead and galloped with her ears pricked nearly a dozen lengths ahead of the rest of the field only a few hundred metres out of the gate. The field settled into a single file line behind the filly as she assured they’d have to work hard to catch her.

Race favourite Fanny Logan (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) put in a late challenge but it was no good with Manuela De Vega pulling away under urging from Rob Hornby to win by 2l. Fanny Logan was the only one to get near the Ralph Beckett trainee with Vivionn (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) finishing in third 6l behind the winner.

Manuela De Vega is one of three stakes winners by Lope De Vega for her dam Roscoff (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}) with Italian champion Hero Look (Ire) and Listed winning Isabel de Urbina (Ire) both produced by the pairing.

Haunui Farm’s Belardo registers first winner

New Zealand shuttle stallion Belardo (Ire) made Lope De Vega’s day even better on Sunday when siring his first winner at Haydock – the first Lope de Vega son to have runners.

Making her debut over 1200 metres, the flashy Golden Melody (Ire) tracked the leaders through the first 800 metres. Jockey James Doyle made the choice to move her to clear ground at that point and Golden Melody joined the dueling leaders before drawing away in the final 100 metres to win by 2.25l.

It was a freshman sires’ top three with Star Of Emaraaty (Ire), Pride Of Dubai’s first Northern Hemisphere runner, finishing second and Kodi Bear’s (Ire) Scarlet Bear (Ire) third.

A 52,000 gns yearling, Golden Melody is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Belmez (USA) (El Gran Senor {USA}) and the dam of Grade 1 winner Debussy (Ire) (Diesis {GB}). Standing at Haunui Farm in New Zealand, Belardo’s first Southern Hemisphere 2-year-olds hit the track later this year with the stallion breeding 314 mares in his first three seasons at Haunui.

First winner for Bobby’s Kitten

A day after his sire won the 2000 Guineas with Kameko (USA) (Kitten’s Joy {USA}), Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint victor Bobby’s Kitten (USA) got off the mark with Sands Of Time (GB) winning impressively at Lingfield.

The Mark Johnston-trained filly went straight to the lead in the 1000 metre race and maneuvered toward the rail under Connor Beasley. Joined for the lead 100 metres in, Sands Of Time didn’t waste much time kicking away from the field as they cornered into the straight.

Passing the 400 metre mark, she started drawing away and just extended her lead from there to win by an easy five lengths over Kodiac’s (GB) Spark Fury (GB) with Charm Spirit’s (Ire) You’ve Charmed Me (Ire) in third.

One of four winners out of her Group 3 winning dam Starlit Sands (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Sands of Time’s family includes Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed Songerie (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) and her Listed winning and Group 1 placed sister Souvenance (GB) with Group 1 winner Petoski (GB) (Niniski {USA}) under her third dam.

Bobby’s Kitten stood at Twin Hills Stud in 2017 with his first Australian foals scheduled to hit the track next season.

Filly casts winning shadow

The James Cummings-trained Silhouettes (Teofilo {Ire}) continued her progression with her maiden success at Warwick Farm.

She had finished fourth on debut and then third at Kembla Grange before she dashed home to win the Sky Racing Active Plate with the stable believing she is capable of mixing it in stakes company next season.

“The speed was on and Jason (Collett) was able to ride her with soft hands and it was good to see her finish off like she did,” stable representative Darren Beadman said. “We might get a bit of black type with her at the back end of the spring carnival.”

Silhouettes is the first winner for Cameo (Shamardal {USA}), who won the G3 Keith Nolan Classic and Listed Scone Cup.

Punters tickled up

All the money came for Deep Field’s son Deep Space on debut at Warwick Farm, but it was another first-timer by the Newgate stallion in Tickler that came out on top in Monday’s Queen’s Birthday Plate.

Trained by Kurt Goldman, Tickler finished off stoutly under Hugh Bowman to narrowly beat Stormy Rock (Fastnet Rock) and Deep Space, who petered out after making the pace.

Kurt Goldman

“We had to roll the dice and start on a heavy track, which was a question mark, but he’s done a good job. I think he’s a pretty smart horse,” Goldman said.

Tickler is a grandson of the G3 research S. winner Besame Mucho (Encosta De Lago), a sister to the G3 Vanity S. winner and G1 South Australian Oaks placegetter Gold Lottey. She is the dam of the stakes winner Iconoclasm (Toorak Toff).

One for future

Trainer John McArdle is confident the best is yet to come from Twain’s Express (Helmet), who made a successful debut on her home track at Mornington on Monday.

The filly settled off the pace and when the gaps opened in the straight she found the line strongly in the Neds Bet Back Plate for rider Jamie Mott.

“She’s nearly 18 hands and she’ll be a better horse when she gets out over a bit of ground and on a better track,” McArdle said.

Twain’s Express is a daughter of Lady Twain (Flying Spur) and she is from the family of the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Eagle Falls (Husonnet {USA}).

Criterion on board

Blaze A Trail credited his sire Criterion (NZ) with his first winner when successful at Hawkesbury on Sunday.

Third on debut in the Golden Gift, Blaze A Trail was then unplaced in consecutive Group 2 appearances for Peter and Paul Snowden before joining Matthew Vella’s stable.

The colt was making his first appearance from his new quarters on Sunday and off the back of two trial wins justified his favouritism with ease over 1300 metres.

Blaze A Trail carries the colours of Go Bloodstock, whose principal Sir Owen Glenn also raced the multiple Group 1 winner Criterion, who has had fertility issues at stud.

New look Missile

The G2 Missile S. will be run as a set-weights with penalties event for the first time this year.

Since becoming part of the Sydney racing calendar in 1978, the 1200 metre race has been held under weight-for-age conditions.

Run in late July but normally in August, the Missile was won in 2018 by the Gregory Hickman-trained Pierata, who will stand his first-season at Aquis in 2020, and last year by James Cummings’ Alizee (Sepoy).

Vendors thanked

New Zealand Bloodstock Sales Representative Regan Donnison was appreciative of the backing from South Island Sale vendors at its first online auction held on the Gavelhouse platform.

“The support and commitment we received from the vendors toward the sale was outstanding,” he said. “They have done a great job at giving prospective buyers the best possible information and their efforts shouldn’t go unrecognised.

“We are also very thankful for all those who registered to bid, their participation was well received.”

Agent Phill Cataldo was busy throughout the sale, investing in four yearlings including the top-priced lot early on in the session.

Purchased on behalf of an Australian buyer, the Reliable Man (GB) filly out of Lady Zafira (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) was secured forNZ$58,500 from the draft of Canterbury-based Ripple Creek.

Vale Falkirk

Falkirk (NZ) has been laid to rest at Windsor Park Stud, where he was born and raised and returned to for stallion duties after a successful racing career, following his recent passing.

He was an unbeaten Group winner in four New Zealand starts and subsequently won the G2 QTC Cup, the G2 Theo Marks H. and also finished fourth in the G1 Royal Ascot King’s Stand S.

At stud, Falkirk’s leading representatives include the Hong Kong Derby winner Fay Fay (NZ) and the G2 Concorde H. winner Durham Town (NZ) and has sired winners of more than NZ$20 million.

The late Falkirk (NZ)

“Falkirk is an integral part of Windsor Park’s success story. We purchased and raced his grandmother and bred and raced his Group-winning dam Madam Valeta with our good friend Alan Burnet, with whom we also bred and raced Falkirk,” Rodney Schick said.

“Falkirk has been very special to us for many years and we will miss having him around. We are fortunate to have a few of his daughters to breed on with now including Supreme, the dam of this season’s leading 2-year-old filly Play That Song.”

Miller keen for action

Young trainer Daniel Miller is looking forward to a return to racing and has three runners engaged at a bumper set of trials at Te Rapa on Tuesday.

A staggering 293 horses are engaged for the trial meeting as racing emerges from a COVID-19 hibernation.

For Miller, 23, lockdown gave him time to focus on some of his younger brigade in addition to the breaking and pre-training element to his business.

Daniel Miller

“I turned all of the racehorses out and I had 10 yearlings to break-in throughout lockdown. I was still pretty busy,” Miller said.

His team will be spearheaded by Sheezallmine (NZ) (Super Easy {NZ}), winner of the G3 Stewards’ H., and Listed Welcome S. winner La Romanee (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}).

Lowry looking to new season

While many jockeys will be looking to get back race day riding later this month, southern hoop Jacob Lowry has set his sights toward the new season for his return.

The 22-year-old rider has struggled with his weight this season and he said his hiatus away from racing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t help the scales.

“I am pretty heavy at the moment, which is to be expected,” Lowry said. “I got up to 65kg, but I am down to about 63.5kg at the moment, but there is still plenty more work to be done yet.

“Whether I ride in July or not, I am not really sure. I’m just chipping away at the weight now, but I would rather come back when I am in a good position, maybe August.”

Looking Ahead - June 9

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we’re expecting a bold debut showing from a 2-year-old who has trialled well and another juvenile who can show significant improvement off a sound opening effort. At Racing.com Park, we like the chances of a 3-year-old who placed on the track in his only appearance.

Titan Of Industry (Written Tycoon) was a $200,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate and is a half-brother to the winner Zoomesday (Zoustar). Their dam Zeltara (Exceed And Excel) was successful three times up to 1350 metres and is a half-sister to the black type winner Missy Cummings (Magnus), the dam of the dual Group 2 winner Mizzy (Zoustar).

Titan Of Industry as a yearling

The second dam Prime Again (Marooned {GB}) won the G2 WATC Champion Fillies’ S. and was runner-up in the G1 South Australian Oaks. Prepared by Matthew Vella, Titan Of Industry has placed in both of his lead-up trials and from a handy gate looks primed to impress on debut.

Scone, Race 2, 1.10pm AEST, trybooking.com Mdn, $20,000, 1400m

Saquon (No Nay Never {USA}) had trialled well before he finished an improver’s fifth in a competitive line-up at Newcastle. It’s more than reasonable to expect him to have derived benefit from that experience and look for sharp improvement from the Paul Perry-prepared gelding.

Saquon as a yearling

Purchased for $150,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Saquon is a half-brother to three winners with their dam Laurelling (USA) (Highest Honor {Fr}). She is a sister to the G1 Racing Post Trophy winner and sire Medaaly (GB) and the dual Group 2 winner and sire Charnwood Forest (Ire). Fresnaye (SAF) (Western Winter {USA}) and Desideratum (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) are other international Group winners in the pedigree.

Dane Zelek (Dane Shadow) is a brother to the Listed Canberra Cup winner Fill The Page, who has produced the G3 Grand Prix S. winner Fun Fact (The Factor {USA}), and the six-time winner and Group performer Patch Adams. They are out of Dorothy Dinosaur (Canny Lad) and the family of Magical Pearl (Keltrice), a multiple black type winner.

The late Dane Shadow, sire of Dane Zelek

Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Dane Zelek hadn’t been to any official trials before he made his debut at over this course and distance last month. The 3-year-old was well-supported and didn’t disappoint, making the play in front and boxing on well for third. He’ll will no doubt strip sharper and from the inside gate can open his winning account.
