Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we like the chances at Newcastle of a pair of lightly-tried maiden performers who both look on the verge of breakthrough performances. At Caulfield, we’re keen on the prospects of a 2-year-old colt who turned in an encouraging debut effort.
Newcastle, Race 2, 12.29pm AEST, Hunter Valley Premium Meats Mdn, $31,500, 1600m
Jazirat (Shooting To Win) looks primed to make a winning debut in her first appearance for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace following her Inglis Digital June Sale purchase for $70,000. Formerly trained by James Cummings, she has been lightly-tried and finished a bold last-start second at Wyong.
Jazirat as a yearling
The filly doesn’t meet a strong line-up here and has the added benefit of apprentice Tom Sherry’s 1.5kg claim. Jazirat is a half-sister to four winners and her dam Alzira (NZ) (Bertolini {USA}) is a half-sister to the dual Group 3 winner, Group 1 placegetter and sire Pendragon. They are out of the G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Alacrity (NZ) (Grosvenor {NZ}).
Newcastle, Race 3, 1.04pm EAST, Advanced Pest Control Mdn, $31,500, 1400m
Underboss (Animal Kingdom {USA}) has made a bright start to his career and followed up a debut fourth at Newcastle with a late closing effort for third at Wyong. He drew an awkward gate there and has fared much better in the barrier draw this time.
Underboss as a yearling
The Kim Waugh-trained 3-year-old is a son of the Redoute’s Choice mare Lobster and she is a daughter of the G1 Robert Sangster S. winner Universal Queen (NZ) (Scenic {Ire}). She is a sister to the four-time Group 1 winner and sire Universal Prince and the family of the G2 Karrakatta Plate winner Lucy Mae (Stratum).
Caulfield, Race 1, 11.50am AEST, Vale Graham Salisbury H., $100,000, 1100m
Impulsive Tycoon (Written Tycoon) was a $180,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase and is out of the multiple winner and stakes performer Bessano (Valixir {Ire}). Her dam Full Noise (NZ) (Kaapstad {NZ}) was a Listed winner and is a half-sister to the G2 Championship S. winner Dancing Daze (NZ) (Dance Floor {USA}).
Impulsive Tycoon as a yearling
She produced the G2 Japan-New Zealand Trophy winner All Roads (NZ) (Road To Rock) and the Listed JRA Cup winner General Booth (NZ) (Entrepreneur {GB}). Impulsive Tycoon came from the tail of the field to run third in his first appearance for Team Hawkes and can improve significantly with the benefit of that experience.
