X-ray expertise helps power yearling market

9 min read
After our feature last Friday about concerns by agents and breeders over the impacts of pre-sale x-rays, we speak to respected equine vet, Dr Chris Lawler, about how expertise in equine radiography has grown and how greater transparency has given buyers more confidence.

Dr Lawler, one of Australia's most experienced and respected equine vets, has backed the expertise of his profession when assessing x-rays of developing thoroughbreds and believes x-rays have played a crucial role in the growth in the yearling market in the past 20 years.

He assesses x-rays from thousands of yearlings and weanlings on behalf of buyers and vendors each year and has witnessed the continued development of expertise in the area since x-rays were introduced into the Australian sales landscape in 2002.

Speaking extensively to TDN AusNZ, Dr Lawler dismissed a perception among some breeders, agents and vendors that the understanding around thoroughbred radiography by vets has not evolved in recent years.

"The more time has gone on, the more experienced they've got. Whereas previously they may have rated a horse as being high risk, now that category only comes for horses that it is believed will not go to the races," he said.

"The number of horses being classified as high risk now has diminished greatly from when it first started.

Inspections at Magic Millions

"You also need to remember when it first started in the early 2000s, you would get 60 or 70 veterinarians arrive at a Magic Millions Sale. Economic pressures and performance results have seen that number decrease rapidly, and now you have probably got 15-20 that are going there. It tends to be the same people that are going to most of the sales."

Dr Lawler said the transparency offered by the availability of x-rays had helped grow confidence of investors, which has played a major role in increasing returns to breeders in Australia.

"What it has done is it has dramatically increased buyer confidence. We have seen averages at sales increase year after year and if we took those radiographs and scopes away, have a look at what will happen to the yearling prices. They will plummet," he said.

"What it has done is it has dramatically increased buyer confidence." - Dr Chris Lawler

"I think it's improved immeasurably from where it was and I think the number of people that are vocal about it are in the minority. Most people have the confidence as far as their veterinarian is concerned."

He said that it was important for the Australian industry to not only meet international industry standards but help set them when it came to providing information for prospective buyers.

Dr Lawler believes it's important for the Australian industry to meet international standards

"There is no doubt that there are vendors out there that would love to see x-rays done away with, but I don’t know if they realise the damage they would be doing to the value of their own drafts," he said.

"They might want to go back to how horses were sold many, many years ago, but if Australia wants to keep up with what is happening internationally, we need to offer international buyers, who are crucial for that top end of the market, at least the level of expectation that they might get at Kentucky or Tattersalls or Arqana."

Clients often dictate risk approach

One of the key variables in Dr Lawler's work in assessing thoroughbreds ahead of sales is working with the different expectations of clients and their various appetites for risks. That is a key factor in his assessment of horses.

"You might have someone akin to a Danny O'Brien, or back in the day, Guy Walter, who is prepared to give a horse a lot of time and not put any pressure on it early. In that instance, you can be far more forgiving in your assessment of a set of radiographs compared to someone who wants a horse up and running early," he said.

"You might have someone... who is prepared to give a horse a lot of time and not put any pressure on it early." - Dr Chris Lawler

"You might have a stallion syndicate, who is trying to win one of these Group 1 2-year-old races, and they want to be able to put the blowtorch to those horses early on. Individual buyers, you might have different advice for and different levels of acceptance."

Buyers ringside at Inglis Riverside Stables

Other buyers who may prefer a horse with a complete clean slate are pinhookers, who are becoming an increasingly active part of the market. They often attract Hong Kong buyers from breeze-up sales or trials, meaning their purchases must stand up to both the rigours of sales preparations and Hong Kong's famously high standard for x-rays.

Cosmetic surgery an area of concern

The desirability of clean x-rays is something which has led to an increasing amount of surgeries for young horses to rectify small defects which while they are highly unlikely to impact a racehorse's future soundness, may impact their desirability at a yearling sale.

Bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills is very much a supporter of the transparency that x-rays provide but raised these 'clean-up' surgeries as a possible equine welfare concern in a recent TDN AusNZ article.

Sheamus Mills

Dr Lawler said that the growing amount of unnecessary surgeries on young horses for cosmetic reasons were also something which concerned him.

"There are certain operative procedures which I am not in favour of, which I do believe are cosmetic," he said.

"I have tried to educate my buyers and investors alike that there are certain procedures, which while they may take away any comment on the horse, won't change the assessment of the horse from an experienced veterinarian.

"There are certain procedures, which while they may take away any comment on the horse, won't change the assessment of the horse from an experienced veterinarian. " - Dr Chris Lawler

"The glowing example of that is hind-fetlock chips, front or back. Any horse like that which doesn't have large swollen joints, it doesn't impact my assessment. Their racetrack performance, their number of starts and average prizemoney earned is the same as the normal population.

"Morally, I find it disturbing that people will opt to do those procedures."

Dr Lawler noted that morally he finds it 'disturbing that people will opt to do those procedures'

Dr Lawler said he does understand the commercial reasons behind the decision to operate in those circumstances, but it is not something he is comfortable with recommending himself.

The questions around surgeries in young horses are not black and white and Lawler said there are instances where he would recommend surgery on a horse that has issues which could impact their soundness in campaigning as a 2-year-old.

The x-ray exceptions

The argument against the value of pre-sale x-rays is often mounted with evidence of a host of elite horses who have failed an x-ray test and then gone on to perform at the top level.

But Dr Lawler says his long experience, and extensive array of collected data, indicates these horses are in the vast minority.

"One thing I see a lot of is vendors coming out with the exception, rather than the rule. I can understand that. But they will say, 'look at this great horse we have, it's great and all the vets have bagged it'," he said.

"One thing I see a lot of is vendors coming out with the exception, rather than the rule. I can understand that." - Dr Chris Lawler

"They always remember the one in 100 that comes out and performs well. I don't blame breeders for doing that, but it does happen."

Five-time Group 1 champion Elvstroem (Danehill {USA}) is often used as a pin-up boy for those who 'failed the x-ray', but Dr Lawler says he recalls that as a yearling in 2002, that horse only fell short of the very stringent Hong Kong requirements.

Elvstroem

"Elvstroem had OCDs in both front fetlocks that were fragmented. Given time and taken along slowly, there was every likelihood that it was going to resolve and he was going to be ok," he said.

"The people that wanted to buy him said they'd like the horse to pass the Hong Kong protocol, because if the horse got up and trialling they would then be able to entertain Hong Kong offers.

"He didn't meet the Hong Kong protocols, but it didn’t mean he failed the x-rays. He very quickly became the banner horse for everybody to use."

Dr Lawler believes vendors need to realise there were always two sides to the x-ray situation

He said vendors needed to realise that there were always two sides to the x-ray situation.

"There might be stories that vendors say they have been cruelled by the veterinarians, but when they go and buy a horse themselves, they get their vet to check it out for sure. From start to finish, you can't have your cake and eat it," he said.

Data available for study

Dr Lawler's 20 years of collected data, plus the repositories of the major sales companies, would make an ideal basis for a broader Australian study on how x-ray issues impact horse soundness and performance.

That study is not one that Dr Lawler himself has time to conduct and when he did broach the concept with the Racing Industry Participants Advisory Committee (RIPAC), it wasn’t something high on their agenda.

Dr Lawler welcomes students to study the data available

"They say some of the data has been done before in America. But I think there will be a response from the vendors to address that, given dirt tracks in America is completely different to what we have here.

"As far as educating the entire industry, that's not my role. That's something RIPAC can do and someone at a university can examine."

For the reasons suggested above and for a multitude of others, in appears the contention around x-rays is not something which will be resolved any time soon.

"I'd love it to be black and white, but unfortunately it’s not," Dr Lawler said.

Trailblazer Danzero remembered

5 min read
G1 Golden Slipper S. winner and successful stallion Danzero has passed away peacefully at Rosemont Stud in Victoria at age 28.

Danzero was a trailblazer for his sire Danehill (USA) in Australia, becoming his first Australian-bred stakes winner when claiming the Listed Maribyrnong Trial on debut in October 1993 and then etching his name as his first Group 1 winner in the world when he won the 1994 Golden Slipper for trainer Lee Freedman and jockey Greg Hall.

He was retired to Arrowfield Stud after his 3-year-old campaign, which included another stakes win in the McNeil S. and became the first son of his sire to stand in Australia.

As a stallion, he would sire 669 winners, 40 of them at stakes level, including the Group 1 winners Niconero, Jymcarew, Danni Martine, Danglissa, Fairway and Dance Hero.

Dance Hero

Dance Hero would not only emulate his sire in winning Australia's richest and most prestigious 2-year-old race, 11 years on, but would also claim the 2-year-old Triple Crown in adding both the G1 Sires' Produce S. and the G1 Champagne S to his Golden Slipper success.

Danzero was at the vanguard of the Danehill-revolution, which saw the bloodlines of his superstar sire become the most dominant in the Australian thoroughbred industry for the past 25 years.

He was bred by Arrowfield Stud from the stakes-placed mare Confidentially (Kaoru Star) and was sold as a yearling for $55,000 to a group of owners including David Kobritz.

The late Danzero at Rosemont Stud earlier this year

He would return to the farm where he was bred, reportedly for nearly 50 times his original price, where he stayed, with the exception of one year at Chatswood Stud in Victoria, before he moved to Rosemont Stud in 2011 to be its foundation stallion.

Crowned Champion First-Season Sire in 1998/99, Danzero finished top five in the Australian Sires Table on two occasions. The first time was in 1999/2000, where his first-crop pair Danglissa and Fairway gave him multiple Group 1 successes, in what was just his second season with runners to the track.

Thanks largely to Dance Hero's heroics, he would finish fourth on the Sires' table in 2003/04. As a measure of the tremendous consistency of his progeny, he had multiple stakes winners for 14 straight seasons.

The late Danzero at Arrowfield Stud in 2009

Danzero also shuttled three seasons to Cheveley Park in Great Britain, with the champion 2-year-old filly Soar (GB), his best horse among 34 winners there. All in all, he had winners in 26 different countries.

“There is no doubt he is one of the finest stallions we have produced,” Arrowfield’s John Messara said when he moved to Rosemont.

"He was bred by us, sold by us, bought back by us and was Danehill’s first Group 1 winner.”

A foundation for Rosemont

Danzero spent three seasons at Rosemont before he retired due to fertility issues.

“He was the first stallion to stand at Rosemont and was in fact the only stallion to stand at our original farm at Ceres,” Rosemont Principal Anthony Mithen said.

“He helped set in motion the stallion business for us and ultimately the purchase of Rosemont Gnarwarre from Tony Santic which is now home to our five-strong stallion roster.” - Anthony Mithen

“He helped set in motion the stallion business for us and ultimately the purchase of Rosemont Gnarwarre from Tony Santic which is now home to our five-strong stallion roster.”

Mithen said the farm would owe a debt of gratitude to Danzero, who changed the nature of the business forever.

The late Danzero enjoying a scratch from a team member at Rosemont Stud

“It is fair to say he changed the course of what we do at Rosemont. We had an itch to scratch and try the stallion game and he got us off the mark. While his fertility let him down, the horse didn’t disappoint us,” he said.

“It was an honour to have him on the farm and he was revered by all that got to lean over his fence and give him a pat. He helped teach us the stallion game and was a true gentleman.

“It was an honour to have him on the farm and he was revered by all that got to lean over his fence and give him a pat." - Anthony Mithen

"He has been in the best health for the nine years he’s been with us. He refused to be boxed at night. We built him his own expensive box before he arrived, only to learn he hated being cooped up and just wanted to spend his days and nights outside - rugged and roaming! I think he spent only three nights in that box ever!

“Our longest serving employee Suzanne Mowat who has looked after him for the best part of a decade found him Sunday morning, resting peacefully. He will now be buried just outside his paddock. May he rest easy.”

Exosphere | Standing at Darley

While his impact as a sire of stallions himself was limited to his sons Masked Assassin and Marechal, he leaves a significant legacy through his daughters, who have produced 31 stakes winners, including Group 1 winners Exosphere, Kolding (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}), Danzdanzdance (NZ) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), Julius (NZ) (Swiss Ace) and December Draw (Ire) (Medecis {Ire}).

Along with Darley's Exosphere and Argyle Thoroughbreds Marechal, Kingstar Farm's new stallion Unite And Conquer, a maternal grandson of Danglissa, is the other active sire to carry Danzero's blood in Australia.

Sun sets on stud’s favourite son

Written by Paul Vettise

A colic attack has claimed the life of much-loved Sun Stud stallion Fighting Sun, who passed away early on Sunday morning.

With three crops of racing age, the son of Northern Meteor’s leading representative to date has been the Listed St Albans S. winner Chess Star and Roccabascerana recently won at Flemington and finished runner-up in the Redelva S.

Fighting Sun’s daughter Platinum Mam’selle has been a winner in New Zealand and ran second in the G3 Taranaki 2YO Classic while Entrapped and Celestial Sol have been other stakes performers.

The late Fighting Sun

Fighting Sun has sired 64 winners across four countries from 155 runners and will have his largest crop of 2-year-olds to the races next season.

“It’s never easy and colic is a horrible thing. He unfortunately went in the early hours and when the guys turned up on Sunday morning he had passed away,” Sun Stud Sales and Nominations Manager Philip Marshall said.

“He was a horse that everyone got very attached to. He was just a bit different and a very loving horse, very ease to manage and to do anything with.

“He was just a bit different and a very loving horse, very ease to manage and to do anything with.” – Philip Marshall

“From a stallion point of view, many can be difficult and aggressive, but he was the complete opposite. He was a gentle giant and just a lovely horse to deal with.”

Fighting Sun also played an important role in the careers of a number of stud staff.

“A lot of the young guys that work here on the farm learned their trade with him in the last few years because he was such a willing horse. He was a great teacher for this younger people who want a career with stallions,” Marshall said.

The late Fighting Sun when racing

Those sentiments were echoed by Operations Manager David Grant.

“He was the go-to stallion for the new and less experienced stallion staff, to help build their confidence. Fighting Sun had such a kind nature and was always easy to serve mares with,” he said.

“It’s been 17 years since we lost a stallion on the property, so we are all in shock and are extremely saddened by his passing. One thing is for sure, the stallion barn will not be the same without him.”

“It’s been 17 years since we lost a stallion on the property, so we are all in shock and are extremely saddened by his passing.” – David Grant

Fighting Sun was purchased at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and signed for by Gai Waterhouse and James Harron for $180,000.

“He was the first horse that our ownership group had good success with. He was named by Mr Cheng and raced with Gai and Adrian and showed unbelievable potential and probably robbed of what was a likely G1 Golden Slipper S. victory by injury,” Marshall said.

Fighting Sun had won at Rosehill on debut and sadly suffered a career-ending victory when he won the Listed Canonbury S. in his only other appearances.

Watch: Fighting Sun win at Rosehill

“He was a tremendous talent and we all thought, as did Gai, that he was the most likely winner of Slipper that year and unfortunately it wasn’t to be,” Marshall said.

“It’s very, very sad and kind of ironic that his sire Northern Meteor, who was going to be an absolute super sire and probably a breed-shaper, unfortunately he went the same way at the same age.

“We’re only in this industry because we love the horses so when something like this happens it’s tough. He’s going to leave a big hole, he was just a wonderful horse and Amir Khan, our Stallion Manager, is extremely upset.”

Filly defies the odds to win again

Felicia (Unencumbered) has faced daunting challenges in her young life and the 3-year-old has come out the other side to repay the unwavering faith of her connections.

The filly has had to overcome adversity to return to the track after she was sidelined for 15 months, following a highly-encouraging start, and her last-start return to winning form at Caulfield was testament to both her courage and talent.

Felicia began her career in Western Australia and was unbeaten in both of her 2-year-old starts at Morphettville and Gawler for trainer Matthew Seyers before her progress was halted by knee surgery.

She was subsequently sent to the Mornington stable of Dean Binaisse, who has enjoyed previous success with training programs tailor-made for horses with such issues. Group performers Anabaa’s Legacy (NZ) (Anabaa {USA}) and Fab Fevola (Falvelon) two past examples.

“Felicia is lucky to be here at all. She had a routine knee operation and then she got an infection in the joint and they rushed her back,” he said. “They gave her a heap of drugs and she wasn’t responding.”

Advice ignored

Veterinary advice was to put her down, but connections thankfully ignored that and she was sent to Golden Plains veterinary clinic for further surgery.

Felicia made good progress with an expectation of a broodmare career, but further treatment subsequently rekindled hopes of a return to racing.

“She was running around the paddock and they thought with a water walker, beach work and the programs we’ve got in place for horses with knee issues they would send her to me for rehab,” Binaisse said.

“Some of her owners own a product called 4CYTE, which is made from green lipped muscles and she’s on that every day for joint lubrication.”

Dean Binaisse

A co-owner Dan Bright, who races under his Interpath Horse banner, operates an animal health company whose products are marketed all over the world.

“We got her up and going and the owners thought they may get a run out of her, but I was pretty confident with the way she was responding to this training that we would get a bigger result,” Binaisse said.

“She only trots and canters on the track and the rest of the time she spends on the water walker here or down the beach in the heavy sand.

“She only trots and canters on the track and the rest of the time she spends on the water walker here or down the beach in the heavy sand.” – Dean Binaisse

“She only zips up on the grass over 600 metres, but only when the track is soft. It’s the same at the races, if the track’s firm she won’t go.”

Felicia placed in three of her first four starts for Binaisse before she deservedly broke through at Caulfield on Saturday with a powerful display under jockey Craig Williams.

“When you’ve got people like Craig annoying you and trying to get on the horse you know you’ve got a decent one,” Binaisse said.

Felicia

“She’ll have a little break now and if it’s still wet when we bring her back we’ll aim for that. She will have all the summer and autumn off.

“She’s been super consistent and unlucky and been right there. She still needs to fill out, she’s quite lean and trim and there’s not a lot of her for a sprinter.

“After a really nice spell she will thicken up and mature and improve. It was only her seventh career start on Saturday so she’s done a really good job.

“I’m really proud of the team and everyone around us, there’s a lot of work gone in to a horse like this. She’s 100 per cent sound and we’ve had no issues with the knee, it’s pretty exciting going forward to get hold of a decent horse again.”

Pedigree Boosters

In the build up to the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale Round 2, the Scone Yearling Sale and the Australian Weanling Sale, we will pick out three lots each day who have enjoyed pedigree updates in the lead-up to the auctions.

Today, we check out a daughter of No Nay Never (USA) who has received a Group boost from Ireland and at Scone we take a closer look at a colt whose half-brother is a recent winner and a son of the exciting young stallion Vancouver.

Easter Round 2, Lot 9 - No Nay Never (USA) x Like A Song (Ire) (Royal Applause {GB}) – On account of Coolmore

This filly is the sole representative of her sire in the auction and hails from an internationally successful family. Her dam is a half-sister to the G3 Sandown Atalanta S. winner Ladys First (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}).

The G2 Doncaster May Hill S. winner and Group 1 performer Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is another quality performer in the pedigree, and he also finished runner-up in the G2 Mooresbridge S. since the catalogue went to print.

Scone Yearling Sale, Lot 261 - Your Song x Bay Trixie (General Nediym) – On account of Ashleigh Thoroughbreds

This colt is a brother to The Tenor, who recently won for the fifth time in his career and another update has been delivered from overseas with family member Zerostress (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) placing at Group 3 level in Germany.

Lot 261 - Your Song x Bay Trixie (colt)

The pedigree page of Ashleigh’s youngster also features the G3 Thoroughbred Club S. winner and multiple stakes placegetter California Zimbol (I Am Invincible) and her half-sister From Within (Not A Single Doubt), successful in the Listed Alinghi S.

Scone Yearling Sale, Lot 292 - Vancouver x Dirty (Hussonet {USA}) – On account of Vinery Stud

As the only youngster by Vancouver in the sale, this colt is sure to have his share of admirers. The first crop of his sire have made an outstanding impression and most recently capped by his son Mount Pleasant winning at Group 2 level in South Africa.

Lot 292 - Vancouver x Dirty (colt)

Vinery’s colt is a half-brother to three winners, including the Group 2-placed Cabeza De Vaca (Northern Meteor). Their dam Dirty was successful four times and the family also features the stake-winning half-brothers Whitlam (Elusive Quality {USA}) and Etymology (New Approach {Ire}).

Paul Moroney

TDN AusNZ: Where are you from and what is your earliest racing memory?

Paul Moroney: Born in Matamata, New Zealand. My mother’s parents bred Hi Jinx (NZ) (Pride Of Kildare {Ire}) which won the 1960 Centennial Melbourne Cup. My earliest racing memory is my uncle by marriage, Buzz Leggett, completing the 1965 Great Northern Hurdles-Steeplechase double on Smoke Ring a couple of days before my fifth birthday.

TDN AusNZ: Can you tell us a bit about the work you do, and what you love most about your job?

PM: I’m a bloodstock consultant who specialises in selecting breeding stock, racehorses, and yearlings. Horse racing has always been my passion so I love being able to have turned that into a profession. It’s never really felt like a job and even less so since my partner Catheryne joined me in our business six years ago!

Paul with his partner Catheryne

TDN AusNZ: Which is your favourite racehorse of all time? Why?

PM: Xcellent (NZ) (Pentire {GB}). I bought him as a yearling, was his managing owner and also co-trained him to win a Group 1. He was a freak who won a Derby at his third start and four Group 1s in his first seven starts from 1400 to 2400 metres. Unfortunately, he was plagued by injury and, despite that record, we never saw the best of him.

TDN AusNZ: Which racehorse, ever, do you think was the best type?

PM: Sadler’s Wells (USA) is probably the most athletic I’ve seen in the flesh - great balance and quality.

The late Sadler's Wells (USA)

TDN AusNZ: What stallion do you consider to be ‘under the radar’ and why?

PM: Toronado (Ire). I believe in High Chaparral (Ire) as a potential sire of sires.

TDN AusNZ: Which stallion, ever, do you think was the best type?

PM: Zabeel (NZ) was hard to fault. He was a quality yearling who let down into a classy stallion. It was no surprise he achieved stellar heights.

TDN AusNZ: Who do you think is a rising star within the industry? (person not horse).

PM: Young Kiwi horse trainer Jamie Richards has the backing, talent and work ethic to become a champion trainer in his own right. I’m sure he will make his mark in Australia and eventually further afield as well.

Te Akau trainer, Jamie Richards

TDN AusNZ: What positive change would you like to see in the industry?

PM: Racing NSW and Racing Victoria working together to prevent diluting and splitting Australia’s best horses and jockeys at carnival time.

TDN AusNZ: If you weren’t in this industry what would you do?

PM: Who could ever think about that!

Hyland retires

After more than 60 years in racing as a jockey and trainer, Pat Hyland has retired after a successful career.

Ill-health has forced Hyland to relinquish his role in a training partnership with his son Chris to spend time on his farm in rural Victoria.

Pat Hyland

Inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2016, Hyland is one of only eight jockeys to have won Australian racing's Group 1 grand slam of the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper.

"He rode trackwork until he was 74 and then he slowed down a little bit in the last few years," Chris Hyland told RSN927. "He's had a few little health issues, but overall he's not too bad at the moment."

Awaiting test result

Trainer Matthew Williams is hoping a test result will explain the disappointing last-start effort of Harbour Views (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) at Caulfield.

He was sent out a hot favourite off the back of a victory at The Valley, but could do no better than fourth.

Harbour Views (Fr)

Racing Victoria stewards said Harbour Views was lame in the left fore-leg following Saturday's race, but Williams was not using that as an excuse.

He is hopeful a lung wash will shed some light on the below par performance with the result expected later in the week.

McDonald appealing

Jockey James McDonald will be lodging an appeal against his three-week suspension over a running and handling charge.

McDonald was found guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to win or obtain the best possible placing on Threeood (Star Witness) in at Randwick on June 20.

"I'll be appealing for sure and hopefully get that heard as soon as possible," McDonald told RSN927.

James McDonald

McDonald landed a treble at Rosehill on Saturday to bring up a century of winners in consecutive seasons on Sydney tracks.

He has a 20.5 win lead over Nash Rawiller in this season's Sydney metropolitan jockeys' premiership heading into Wednesday's meeting at Randwick.

Time called

Multiple black type winner Crack Me Up (Mossman) has been retired after re-injuring a fetlock in the Listed Civic S. at Rosehill.

Crack Me Up

"He’s a lovely horse and we’ll miss his majestic presence in the stable,” trainer Bjorn Baker said.

Crack Me Up won the G2 Villiers S. when prepared by Liam Birchley and was also successful in the G3 Liverpool City Cup and G3 Sunshine Coast Guineas, as well as three Listed events.

Magical winner for O'Brien

Playing host to a Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in full swing, Sunday’s G1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly S. at The Curragh was as good as over after less than a furlong as Seamie Heffernan committed to front-running duties on the returning 2-5 favourite. Kept in training for good reason, the G1 English and Irish Champion S. and G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup heroine of 2019 showed no mercy to her opposition and took off heading to two out en route to a 4.5l dismissal of the 3-year-old Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}), with 1.75l back to Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in third.

“She’s very exciting and always has been, but she’s got stronger this year and that’s why the lads decided to leave her in training,” Aidan O’Brien said. “She was to go to No Nay Never.”

Magical is out of the excellent producer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who herself won the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Nassau S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. All her progeny to date are by Galileo (Ire), including the triple Group 1-winning Rhododendron (Ire).

Open to Derby double

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has revealed that the door is still open for Saturday’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) to attempt to make it two Derbies in seven days in the Epsom version on July 4.

Santiago and his five stablemates that contested the Curragh Classic could be entered for the G1 Investec Derby on Monday, O’Brien told Racing TV’s Luck On Sunday program.

“It’s very possible. If any of them come out of the race exceptionally well and the owners want to make an entry, that’s what will happen.

“It was unconventional to run them so soon after Ascot, but they came out of the race well and that is why they ran. Nothing is definitely ruled out.”

Charming success

Windsor Park Stud shuttle stallion Charm Spirit (Ire) sired his eighth stakes winner when Time Scale (GB) proved a cut above her rivals in the Listed Betway Empress Fillies’ S. at Newmarket at the weekend.

The Ralph Beckett-trained 2-year-old continued her climb through the ranks when backing up her comfortable success at Chepstow last time.

A step up to Group race company is next on the agenda for Time Scale, who was installed as a 25-1 for next year’s G1 1000 Guineas, with Beckett earmarking potential targets both at home and abroad.

“She will have an entry in the G2 Robert Papin. There is also the G3 Princess Margaret S. at Ascot and it is just as likely that she could go there.

“Hopefully we can then look at the G2 Lowther S. and the G1 Cheveley Park S. later on in the season.”

Oaks performer to Maher

Southland trainer Kelvin Tyler may have lost one of his star 3-year-olds to Australia, but he is excited about the prospects of another.

The G1 New Zealand Oaks placegetter Feel The Rush (NZ) (Proisir) has joined Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s Sydney barn, however, Tyler’s brother Allan and sister-law Marie have retained a half-share in the promising filly.

Feel The Rush (NZ) | Image courtesy of Race Images

“My brother already has a horse over with Ciaron at Ballarat, so we knew him a little bit and Allan was quite keen for her to go over so it fell into place quite nicely.”

Tyler said he fielded a few offers for the filly and also for her dual stakes-winning stablemate Lightning Jack (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}).

“He is quite exciting. He is a good horse and could have easily gone over to Australia as well. My brother and sister-in-law own him as well and they are quite keen to have a horse racing in New Zealand,” Tyler said.

Looking Ahead - June 30

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we like the chances of a maiden with a speedy pedigree to back his claims at Gosford where we also like a well-related 2-year-old off the back of a smart trial win. At Sportsbet-Ballarat, a filly from a Group 1 background looks ready to go one better following a debut second.

Gosford, Race 2, 12.45pm AEST, Eve Security Service Mdn, $31,500, 1000m

Light And Dark (Rubick) looks like proving an astute piece of business for trainer Bjorn Baker, who secured him for just $20,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale. The 3-year-old had trialled well before he ran fourth on debut at Hawkesbury and then ran third at Newcastle. He has drawn well and third-up should be ready to shed his novice tag.

Light And Dark as a yearling

The gelding boasts a speedy pedigree and is a son of Canzero (Danzero), who has produced three winners, and she was successful twice up to 1000 metres. The dam is a half-sister to the Listed Ottawa S. winner Spectrolite (Stratum) and from the family of the Listed Reginald Allen S. winner Hitapotomoss (Twig Moss {Fr}), also placed in the G2 Light Fingers S.

Gosford, Race 3, 1.20pm AEST, Kentan Machinery 2YO, $31,500, 1100m

Oscar Zulu (Epaulette) has a pedigree to boost confidence with his dam Ininthree (NZ) (Generous {Ire}) a half-sister to the Group 1 winners Terravista (Captain Rio {GB}) and Tiger Tees (NZ) (Dubawi {Ire}), the multiple Group 2 winner Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi {Ire}) and the former Singapore Horse of the Year and sire Super Easy (NZ).

Oscar Zulu as a yearling

A $130,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, Oscar Zulu has been to the trials on four occasions and was successful at Warwick Farm at his most recent appearance. He has drawn an ideal gate in a big field and with Lee Magorrian aboard they look a tasty combination.

Sportsbet-Ballarat, Race 2, 1pm AEST, Hertz 2YO Mdn Plate, $20,700, 1200m

Impetus (Written Tycoon) was a strong second on debut at Pakenham and she looks perfectly-placed here to go one better. The Lindsay Park representative will be ridden by the in-form Daniel Stackhouse, who was aboard the filly in her first appearance.

Written Tycoon, sire of Impetus | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

She is a daughter of Gybe (Fastnet Rock), who won five races including two at Listed level and was runner-up in the G3 Golden Pendant S. She is a half-sister to the two-time Group 1 winner Anabandana (Anabaa {USA}) and the family of the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner King’s Rose (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), whose brother Hardham won the G2 Alister Clark S. and placed in the G1 Australian Derby.
