Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, all our efforts are focussed on the Cranbourne meeting where we like a resuming 2-year-old who was stakes-placed in his first preparation, an in-form colt with numerous top-flight winners in his pedigree and a half-brother to the multiple Group 1 winner Sacred Falls (NZ).
Cranbourne, Race 1, 12.25pm AEST, Peter & Lavella DaRose 2YO, $31,500, 1000m
Frederick The Dane (Danerich) returns from a break and he looked good on debut when third to the well-performed Mildred (Hinchinbrook) in the G3 Chairman’s S. at Caulfield. He couldn’t repeat the effort when unplaced in the Listed Talindert S. at Flemington, but with the benefit of a spell is one to keep a close first-up watch on.
Frederick The Dane as a yearling
Trained by Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes, Frederick The Dane is a brother to stakes performer Kaiser Sun and half-brother to Speed Street (Al Maher), also placed at black type level. Their dam Street Princess (Keltrice) is an unraced half-sister to the Listed Mercedes Benz S. winner Lady Elsie (Rainbows For Life {Can}) and the family of the great Kingston Town (Bletchingly).
Cranbourne, Race 6, 3.20pm AEST, Mercedes-Benz Mornington H., $31,500, 1200m
Harlem Blues (Your Song) turned in a fine performance to win untested at Ballarat, racing on the speed and surging clear to score by 2.75l. The 2-year-old will be up against older opposition again, but from a handy gate a similar performance will take him close to doubling his winning tally.
Your Song, sire of Harlem Blues | Standing at Widden Stud
From the stable of Peter and Paul Snowden, Harlem Blues is a half-brother to the winner Jarm (Danerich) to give their dam New York Rain (Statue Of Liberty {USA}) a perfect record at stud. The pedigree also features the champion mare Emancipation (Bletchingly) and fellow Group 1 winners Virage De Fortune (Anabaa {USA}), Stratum Star (Stratum), Railings (NZ) (Zavabeel {NZ}) and Rumya (Red Ransom {USA}).
Cranbourne, Race 5, 2.45pm AEST, TAB Long May We Play H., $31,500, 1400m
Wairere Falls (NZ) (Savabeel) faces a rise in class in this, but on the evidence of his most recent appearance he looks up to the task. The 3-year-old resumed off the back of a four month break at Geelong and came from well back in the field to account for Toyetic (Sebring), who won next time out.
Wairere Falls (NZ) as a yearling
Prepared by Waller, Wairere Falls was a NZ$280,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale purchase and is a half-brother to the four-time Group 1 winner and sire Sacred Falls (NZ). Their dam Iguazu’s Girl (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) is a half-sister to the G3 Thoroughbred Club S. winner Splashing Out (O’Reilly {NZ}) and she has produced the Group winners Splurge (NZ) (Savabeel), Shopaholic (NZ) (Pins) and her brother Packing Pins (NZ).
