Looking Ahead - July 19

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we are expecting bold performances from a pair of sparingly-raced 3-year-olds at the Scone meeting and at Racing.com Park we are expecting a 2-year-old son of I Am Invincible to go one better on a last-start second.

Scone, Race 2, 1.30pm AEST, Horse Power Mdn Plate, $22,000, 1600m

Total Recall (Animal Kingdom {USA}) has gone close to opening his winning account a couple of times from limited appearances and is presented with a gilt-edged opportunity to make an overdue breakthrough here. He came from near the tail of the field over 1300 metres to run fourth last time out and the step up in trip is in his favour.

Trained by Paul Messara, Total Recall is a half-brother to three winners and their dam Hussta La Vista (Hussonet {USA}) was successful on four occasions. She is from a solid North American family and a half-sister to the stakes winners Avare (USA) (Johannesburg {USA}), V Formation (USA) (Proud Birdie) and My Silver Charm (USA) (Silver Charm {USA}).

Scone, Race 3, 2.10pm AEST, Widden Stud Mdn, $22,000, 1300m

Mother’s Day (Stratum) will make a fresh start here for local trainer Rodney Northam and she looks to have a fine chance of returning in a blaze of glory. The filly finished runner-up over this course and distance at her last appearance in May and, in a big field, the combination of an inside gate and the experienced Christian Reith in the saddle significantly boosts her prospects.

Mother's Day as a yearling

The 3-year-old is a daughter of the unraced Tej (Bernardini {USA}) and she is a sister to the Listed Geelong Classic winner Solemn. Their dam is a half-sister to the G1 Australasian Oaks winner La Volta (Laranto) and the family of the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Mighty Boss (Not A Single Doubt) and the G2 Angus Armanasco S. winner Catch A Fire (Sebring).

Racing.com Park, Race 7, 3.20pm AEST, Sportsbet-The Money Men Podcast, $31,500, 1200m

Cumberpatch (I Am Invincible) was bought at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $250,000 and is the first foal to the races for the Listed Dequetteville S. winner Pearl Star (Star Witness). This is the family of the G1 VRC Sires’ Produce S. winner and sire Spectatorial.

Cumberpatch as a yearling

Prepared by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Cumberpatch has been lightly-tried and was put aside after running fifth in his summer debut. He showed the benefit of a break when finishing runner-up over this course and distance earlier this month and looks a top chance to go one better in the hands of Jamie Kah.
