Looking Ahead - July 23

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Tuesday, we are on the trail of Peter and Paul Snowden, checking out a trio of 2-year-olds from their stable, one of which steps out at Warrnambool and the other two which front up at Kembla Grange.

Warrnambool, Race 1, 12.30pm AEST, Clinton Baulch Motor Group 2YO Mdn, $31,500, 1100m

Peter and Paul Snowden don't bring too many to the 'Bool, and the Yulong-owned filly Sweet Sixteen (Sebring) shapes as an interesting prospect on debut. She was a $310,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale buy from the draft of Sun Stud.

She is a half-sister to Listed Fernhill S. winner Veuvelicious (Northern Meteor), and given the European pedigree on her dam's side, you’d suggest she may appreciate getting out in distance in time. However, she did show plenty of early speed in a recent Flemington jump-out and she won't have to be super slick to win a race of this quality.

Kembla Grange, Race 2, 1.40pm AEST, Poplar Petfood and Produce Mdn, $35,000, 1300m

Global Queen (Snitzel) was well-fancied when fourth in a Canterbury 2-year-old race last month and returns to the track with the benefit of that run and a recent trial where she was third. She steps up against the older horses but looks to have the ability to account for her rivals here.

She was a $500,000 purchase for GPI trust No.2, Andrew Williams Bloodstock and Makybe from the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She is a sister to Group 1 winner Summer Passage from a family which boasts stakes-winners Order Of The Sun (Encosta De Lago), Beauty (Smart Missile), Get To Work (Snippets) and Excitable Boy (More Than Ready {USA}).

Kembla Grange, Race 3, 2.20pm AEST, TC Aire & Electric Mdn, $35,000, 1400m

Fortaleza (Dundeel {NZ}) is another Team Snowden 2-year-old and she debuts here off a couple of trials which may indicate she will appreciate more distance in time.

She has the pedigree to be a nice horse over those Classic distance ranges given she is out of a G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Midnight Oil (NZ) (Keeper), and has champion staying filly Our Tristalight (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) as her fourth dam. G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Danske (NZ) (Danehill {USA}) and Listed winner Eagle Rhythm (NZ) (Rhythm {USA}) are also on the page.
