Musk Creek's stallion selection backs up broodmare investment

10 min read
Having invested significantly in the quality of its broodmare band over the past few years, Victorian-based Musk Creek Farm is targeting a range of new and proven stallions in 2020 as it looks to frank that investment with strong results in the sales ring in the future.

Owned by David Kobritz, Musk Creek has been under the eye of Farm Manager Scott Williamson for just over three years and together with the guidance of bloodstock agent Craig Rounsefell, they have looked to re-invigorate Kobritz's 20-strong broodmare band.

Around 12 of the 20 broodmares have arrived since Williamson began with Musk Creek, with a focus on quality and the aim of further building the Mornington Peninsula Farm's reputation as a breeder and seller of top-class horses.

"Over the last couple of years, we have made a concerted effort in upgrading our broodmare band. We've spent a bit of money getting some young mares either carrying their first foals or off the track. We want to be at that top end of the market and have a red-hot crack. We want to produce those high-end yearlings," Williamson told TDN AusNZ.

"Over the last couple of years, we have made a concerted effort in upgrading our broodmare band." - Scott Williamson

Key to that success is the planning of matings for those mares, something which Williamson particularly relishes, utilising the experience of Kobritz and Rounsefell to ensure the right match.

"We want to be commercial, but we want to make sure we are breeding the right type. We want to make sure that it not only fits on pedigree, but that type is a strong consideration as well," he said.

"With young mares, you don’t necessarily know what they might produce, but you know what their pedigree is and we try and identify things they may need. You want to put a stallion to her that might have what she is lacking and visa versa.

"We want to present the right sort of horses at the sales and ones that we think that are going to go on to be racehorses."

Scott Williamson

Williamson described the broodmare band size of 20 as a perfect sweet spot to ensure all the mares get the support they need to be successful in their breeding careers.

"That's a comfortable number for us. It’s at a level where we feel we can invest in them and give them the service fees they deserve and need," he said.

All in the family

One of the strategies Musk Creek has embarked on over the past few years is sourcing its new mares from already proven families.

A prime example is Personalised, a mare by Snitzel out of the stakes winner Personify (Galileo {Ire}), the daughter of blue hen Procrastinate (Jade Hunter {USA}), who Musk Creek and Boomer Bloodstock paid $525,000 for at last year's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Personalised

"She is a multiple city winning daughter of Personify and her half-sister Personal is ready to help the family out in some big races this spring," Williamson said.

"She's from Cressfield, which is a very successful farm. Buying into a family like that, you don’t get many opportunities to do that. We look to buy into a family like that and turn that into a Musk Creek family."

Personlised is in foal to Dundeel (NZ) and is set to go to Widden Stud's Zoustar this season.

"We feel a mare with a good bit of strength really suits him. I foaled down Zousain in my previous role, and he was out of a decent-sized, strong mare and I think those mares are the ones that best suit Zoustar. She's a lovely, good-sized Snitzel mare with plenty of strength. Obviously, she is a very attractive mare and I thought it will be a good mating for her."

Divine connection makes sense

It was another strong family connection that drove Musk Creek to pay $320,000 for Notre Dame (Exceed And Excel) at the recent Magic Millions Broodmare Sale from Godolphin's draft.

Two years prior, it had paid $600,000 at the same sale for her half-sister Deipara (Lonhro) and Williamson has been delighted with what she has been able to produce.

Both mares are out of the multiple Group 1 winner Divine Madonna (Hurricane Sky).

Notre Dame

"We know that that family is producing, and we saw it as a good opportunity to get a bit of control of that family and guide that family in the direction we want to go," he said.

"She's a cracking type of mare, Notre Dame. She has produced a Street Boss colt already this spring, and she is off to Written Tycoon this year. We are definitely investing in that family."

Deipara's now 2-year-old Exceed And Excel filly is in training with Anthony and Sam Freedman and Kobritz and Williamson harbour high hopes for her.

"The second foal out of the mare is an outstanding I Am Invincible filly. Both sales companies have looked at her and are extremely impressed with her," Williamson said

"Deipara has thrown extremely good types and to an extent that she will go to Snitzel this year. We are pretty happy with what we have seen and we felt that with the quality of foals she has produced, it would be really good to get a Snitzel out of her. Not only does he suit her on type and pedigree, but to have a Snitzel in the draft, you can take that to any sale."

Mirette shapes up

The other purchase for Musk Creek on the Gold Coast this year was Mirette (Unencumbered), a winner of four starts, including the G3 Auraria S., while she was second in a G1 Schweppes Oaks. She cost $150,000, a price that was very pleasing for Musk Creek.

Mirette

"We are quite excited about Mirette. We thought she would make more money than she did. She was well performed on the track and is a lovely type of mare, good-sized and with a great temperament," Williamson said.

"Testa Rossa has really started to stand up as a broodmare sire and we feel that Unencumbered has got every chance of doing the same.

"Mirette deserves a good mating, with her looks and also her race ability. She will head off to Blue Point this year and we feel he's a very exciting horse from a great sireline and a sireline that has been successful in Australia."

"Mirette deserves a good mating, with her looks and also her race ability. She will head off to Blue Point this year." - Scott Williamson

Williamson admitted it was unusual to send a maiden mare to a first-season sire, but that Mirette's profile held up well for such a mating.

Another maiden mare is the imported Ascertain (USA) (Blame {USA}), a three-time winner in the United States, who had just one start in the Musk Creek colours in Australia under trainer Lindsey Smith.

"She had a long layoff and had an injury in the States," Williamson said. "She got over that and Lindsey was really happy with how she was going. Then everything went wrong with the one run she had.

"She's up in the Hunter and is off to Deep Field. She's a beautiful mare and obviously Deep Field is getting plenty of winners. We are pretty excited about her. We think she was very good purchase at US$40,000 (AU$54,979) when Craig managed to find her. The minute he laid eyes on her, he fell in love with her, I know every time I talk to Lindsey, he asks about her."

Pride for If I Can

The Listed-winning If I Can I Can (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}), was a $350,000 purchase for Musk Creek back in 2016 and has produced a filly by I Am Invincible who sold for $475,000 in 2018 as well as a colt by Hinchinbrook that fetched $450,000 at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

"She's in foal to American Pharoah at the moment and we plan to send her to Pride Of Dubai," Williamson said.

"We have been pretty impressed with how he has started out at stud and we are of the opinion that the Pride Of Dubais will only get better at three. It’s the right type of stallion for her, she lacks a bit of height as a mare."

Cardiac (Encosta De Lago) has already produced the Group 3 winner Declarationofheart (Declaration Of War {USA}) and is a half-sister to the G1 VRC Oaks winner Arapaho Miss (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who has, in turn, produced a winner of the same race in Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}). A blood brother to Miami Bound by Reliable Man out of Cardiac sold for $200,000 by Musk Creek earlier this year at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Reliable Man (GB) x Cardiac (colt)

Cardiac recently produced a filly by Dundeel (NZ) and will be heading back to the Arrowfield Stud stallion this year.

"He's the perfect type for her. She is quite a large mare, so a slightly smaller stallion suits her. Declaration Of Heart was quite a big horse for a first foal and she is the sort of mare you wouldn't want to send to a big stallion," Williamson said.

"It’s definitely a family on the up, Arapaho Miss has been doing a great job, It’s another nice family that seems to keep producing, That's a family we would be looking to keep a filly out of at some point down the track."

Finding the right fit

Also suited to a stallion with a smaller profile is another of Musk Creek's mares in stakes-placed Keep De Rose (NZ) (Keeper), and she will revisit Shalaa (Ire), with who she produced a $300,000 colt.

Williamson said the form Shalaa's first European crop has given it only more reason to send Keep De Rose back to the Arrowfield shuttler having recently produced a Rubick colt.

Shalaa (Ire) x Keep De Rose (NZ) (colt)

Imported mare Apologynotaccepted (USA) (Fusaichi Pegasus {USA}), a $500,000 2019 Inglis Chairman's Sale buy whose Medaglia D'Oro (USA) filly is set to be one of the highlights of Musk Creek's yearling offering in 2021, is in foal to Written Tycoon and will visit Snitzel later this season.

And Bellissima Miss (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), the daughter of Group 1 winner Veloce Bella (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}), has foaled a Brazen Beau filly and heads to Coolmore's Pierro this spring.

Cross-border support

Williamson said he felt securing a spread of stallion options for the broodmare band was a strategy which would pay dividends for Musk Creek going forward.

"We feel that we are giving them all a fair chance. We’ve got a fairly equal split between New South Wales and Victoria," he said.

"We are supporting Toronado with a couple of mares and we are supporting Fiorente. We will be sending Imperial Empress to Brazen Beau.

"And we’re pretty excited and impressed with the new horse at Spendthrift.

"We will send one of our mares, Leny's Here, the daughter of Devil Moon, to Omaha Beach, I was really impressed with Omaha Beach. He's a horse that pedigree wise, he should work. He looks a cracking type with a lovely walk on him. He's very good looking with a great head.

"I feel there is a revival in the Victorian industry at the moment, and it’s good to see the new players getting involved and there are some exciting new stallions."

First-season shuttlers - who is faring best across the pond?

7 min read
With 2-year-olds edging closer to stepping out at the races, the first-season shuttlers are already getting results on the track in the Northern Hemisphere, but which ones are faring the best?

As we head further into the new season, all eyes are on this year’s crop of 2-year-olds and which of the first-season sires will fare best.

For many of the stallions who first arrived on our Southern shores in 2017, their first local runners from next month onwards will also provide our first glimpse of their progeny on a racecourse, but there are 11 stallions whose progeny have already hit the tracks in the Northern Hemisphere.

Several of these shuttlers had their first runners this year, while there are a handful of others who have multiple crops at racing age.

Territories (Ire) | Standing at Darley

Darley’s Territories (Ire), a Group 1-winning son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) just like champion Australian sire I Am Invincible, is leading the way for first-season Southern Hemisphere shuttlers in Europe, siring 10 winners from 41 runners including five stakes placegetters.

Arrowfield shuttler Shalaa (Ire), a fellow son of Invincible Spirit, has also gotten his stallion career off to a good start. The Group 1-winning 2-year-old has nine winners from 37 to race, also giving him a 24 per cent strike-rate.

His progeny is headed by Saeiqa (GB), who finished third in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, while he is also responsible for three other Group performers.

Former Arrowfield shuttler Maurice (Jpn) is proving just as successful in Japan, he has sired nine winners from 47 runners at a strike rate of 19 per cent. His dual-hemisphere barn mate, Mikki Isle (Jpn), landed his first stakes winner on Sunday when Meikei Yell (Jpn) took out the G3 Nisai S.

Haunui Farm’s Belardo (Ire) has also gotten off to a good start, siring seven winners from 31 runners, headed by G3 Prestige S. winner Isabella Giles (Ire), while fellow New Zealand shuttler Vadamos (Fr) has had six winners from 27 runners and is responsible for G3 Acomb S. runner-up Spycatcher (Ire).

American visitors Frosted (USA) (Darley) and Air Force Blue (USA) (Coolmore) have had good starts to their stallion careers, with Frosted siring four winners from 14 starters - all by a significant winning margin, and former shuttler Air Force Blue has sired five from 27.

Coolmore’s Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (USA) is in his second season in the Northern Hemisphere and is already responsible for 10 individual stakes winners and two Grade 1 performers. Woodside Park's Cable Bay (Ire) is also in his second season and is the sire of G1 King's Stand S. runner-up Liberty Beach (GB), in addition to multiple stakes winners.

The final first season shuttler for 2020/21 is Cornerstone’s Sir Prancealot (Ire), who began his stud career in the Northern Hemisphere in 2013 so his oldest crop are now six. He is responsible for eight individual stakes winners including G1 Santa Anita American Oaks scorer Lady Prancealot (Ire).

In the ring

Having had a season of runners already performing well on Northern Hemisphere tracks, American Pharoah’s Southern Hemisphere results fared best of his fellow first-season shuttlers at this year’s yearling sales.

From 75 lots offered, 63 sold at an average of $229,262 and a median of $160,000. His top-priced yearling was a colt out of Derelique (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the dam of Group 2-winning sprinter Man From Uncle (Uncle Mo {USA}), who was purchased by Tom Magnier for $850,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

American Pharoah x Derelique (colt)

With only a handful of 2-year-old trials conducted in New Zealand so far, American Pharoah is the only one of the first-season shuttlers to have a runner step out, with a colt winning impressively at Ruakaka last Tuesday.

The unnamed colt, who is trained by Tony Pike, settled second last in the 700-metre heat before getting clear in the straight and rocketing past his rivals and being eased down at the line. Purchased by Pike for NZ$150,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, the 2-year-old colt is the first foal out of dual Group 1 placegetter Strada Cavallo (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}).

Shalaa also proved popular at the Southern Hemisphere yearling sales, with 69 of his 83 lots offered finding new homes at an average price of $158,898 and a median of $140,000. Caulfield trainer John Sadler took home his highest-priced yearling, a colt out of Jemison (Commands) who is a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Contentment (Hussonet {USA}), for $600,000 at the Gold Coast Sale.

Shalaa (Ire) x Jemison (colt)

Despite a small first crop, Territories’ sale results were strong. He had 21 yearlings go through the ring for 19 sold at an average of $77,629 and a median of $43,000. His top lot, a filly out of Group 3 winner Kaniana (Canny Lad), was sold at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $350,000 to Star Thoroughbreds and Randwick Bloodstock.

Frosted’s first crop was highlighted by a filly out of Fast Fleet (Fastnet Rock) making her a half-sister to champion sprinter Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega {Ire}). She was purchased by Spendthrift Australia for $650,000 at the Gold Coast and is one of 29 yearlings purchased from 37 that were offered.

Rich Hill Stud’s Vadamos led the way for New Zealand with 35 of a possible 43 yearlings purchased at an average of NZ$95,000. His top lot was a colt out of Surooh (USA) (Pivotal {GB}) who was purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock in conjunction with Ballymore Stables for NZ$330,000.

Frosted (USA) x Fast Fleet (filly)

Where are they now?

Out of 11 first-crop shuttlers, only three won’t be standing in the Southern Hemisphere this season.

Arrowfield shelved plans to bring out Maurice and Mikki Isle for the 2020 season, while Coolmore brought Air Force Blue down to Jerrys Plains for the 2017 season only.

American Pharoah will stand for a slightly reduced fee of $55,000 (inc GST) at Coolmore, while Shalaa is back at Arrowfield and his fee is still set at $33,000 (inc GST).

Territories returns to Darley’s Kelvinside property, standing for a value fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Down in Victoria, Frosted stands at Darley’s Northwood Park for $22,000 (inc GST) while Cable Bay is at Woodside Park for a reduced fee of $9900 (inc GST) in 2020. Likewise Sir Prancealot, who is over in South Australia at Cornerstone, stands for a reduced fee of $9900 (inc GST) this season.

Across the Tasman, the only son of Lope De Vega (Ire) at stud in the Southern Hemisphere in Belardo stands at Haunui Farm for NZ$10,000 (plus GST) and Vadamos returns to Rich Hill with his fee set at NZ$15,000 (plus GST).

The local boys

In addition to the 11 first-season shuttlers, there are a further 43 stallions with their oldest crop turning two this season.

Capitalist will have his first crop hit the track this season | Standing at Newgate Farm

The progeny of G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Capitalist proved popular at the sales as he had 137 yearlings go through the ring with 112 changing hands at an average price of $153,071 and a median of $120,000.

Extreme Choice is the only one of the locals to have progeny hit the trials so far, with a colt trained by Jamie Richards taking out a heat at Rotorua last Thursday.

The market

Last week Ladbrokes opened a market for the 2020/21 champion first-season sire with Capitalist holding favouritism at $2.50.

American Pharoah and Flying Artie are the second favourites at $5.50 with Star Turn just behind at $8.50. At $11 is Shalaa and Sooboog followed by Astern at $13.

Coolmore legend as solid as a rock

7 min read
A pair of Group wins as both a sire and broodmare sire over the weekend only confirm that there are very few stallions who can rival Coolmore's legendary Fastnet Rock when it comes to pure consistency in producing stakes quality horses.

Saturday's victory by Dreamforce in the G2 Tramway S. ensured Fastnet Rock has now had an Australian stakes winner in each of the 13 racing seasons since his first crop hit the track in 2008/09. His 98 stakes winners have combined for 201 stakes wins in Australia, while his global total of stakes winners is 158.

This year, Fastnet Rock is shooting for a 12th straight season inside the Top 10 Australian stallions - he is currently sixth - a streak which would equal the longest marked by another famous son of Danehill (USA), Redoute's Choice, who was Top 10 from every season from 2004/05 to 2015/16.

As a measure of comparison and an indication of the rare air Fastnet Rock occupies, Danehill himself, a nine-time Australian Champion sire, finished Top 10 in 14 straight seasons from when his first Australian crop hit the tracks in 1993/94 until 2006/07.

Like his sire, Fastnet Rock has been able to produce remarkable results as a shuttle stallion, with winners in 29 countries, just two fewer than Danehill did across his remarkable global career.

The one aspect where Fastnet Rock has outperformed his own sire is in the success of his progeny in New Zealand, where he has had 18 stakes winners, including the Jamie Richards-trained Avantage, who claimed the G2 Foxbridge Plate on Saturday.

Fastnet Rock | Standing at Coolmore

He finished third in the NZ Sires Table in 2019/20, with seven individual stakes winners from just 20 runners. That's the highest position by an Australian-based stallion in New Zealand this century and represents the third time he has featured in the Top 10.

It's noteworthy that all but two of his 18 New Zealand stakes winners were bred in Australia, including all eight of his Group 1 winners.

His overall record in New Zealand is quite remarkable, with 82 winners from 120 starters, including those 18 stakes winners, who have combined to win 31 stakes races. He has had a stakes winner in New Zealand in each of the past six seasons.

"Fastnet Rock is indisputably one of the greatest stallions of the modern era and he continues to produce elite racehorses more frequently than any other sire," Tom Moore, Coolmore Australia's Marketing and Nominations said.

"Fastnet Rock is indisputably one of the greatest stallions of the modern era." - Tom Moore

"In the past 12 months alone he has produced 11 individual Group 1 performers including Dreamforce, Avantage, Sherwood Forest, Glenfiddich, Anaheed, Personal, Nudge and Prince Fawaz as well as the likes of Tuscan Queen, Brimham Rocks, Inverloch and In A Twinkling."

Market demand remains strong

And while the racetrack success rolls on, so too does the demand for Fastnet Rock's yearlings, which averaged $295,941 in Australia in 2020 across 50 sales.

"Fastnet Rock yearlings sold for an aggregate price of $20,000,000 or more each year for 10 years from 2010. In 2020, his yearlings realised a median price of $300,000 which is as high as it has ever been throughout his entire career," Moore said.

"Breeders can support him with confidence which is reflected in the high demand for his progeny in the sales ring. To achieve a median price that is higher than his average price speaks volumes for the regard for which he is held in the marketplace."

The next generation

The other success for the weekend for Fastnet Rock came as a broodmare sire, with Gytrash (Lope De Vega {Ire}) re-enforcing his credentials as a serious contender for The Everest with an upset win over the world's highest-ranked sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi) in the G3 Concorde S., while the promising Need I Say More (No Nay Never {USA}) won the G3 Northland Breeders' S. at Te Rapa.

Out of Miss Barley, Gytrash is one of three Group 1 winners for Fastnet Rock as a broodmare sire, two of which have been by Lope De Vega (Ire). Gytrash's likely rival in The Everest, Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega {Ire}), is the other poster boy for that combination, while the third Group 1 winner with Fastnet Rock as his maternal grandsire is Waikato Stud's Tivaci (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Gytrash

Fastnet Rock also has a great record nicking with the daughters of Australia's leading non Danehill-line stallions, Pierro, Sebring and More Than Ready (USA) as well as Coolmore's own younger brigade.

"Gytrash and Need I Say More on the weekend further consolidated Fastnet Rock as one of the leading broodmare sires in Australasia," Moore said.

"It is still relatively early days for him as a broodmare sire, but to produce top-class sprinters like Gytrash and Santa Ana Lane in such quick succession bodes very well for the future. They have had great success when paired with outcross sire lines and all his 17 stakes winners are at Group level .

"What we have already seen of the produce from our own Fastnet Rock mares with American Pharoah and Justify is particularly exciting. American Pharoah yearlings out of Fastnet Rock mares sold for $750,000, $750,000, $600,000, $450,000, $300,000, $300,000 in 2020 and the Justify foals out of the likes of Atlantic Jewel, Lake Geneva, Formality and Paulownia are outstanding."

The sons

In Australia, his influence as a sire of sires is becoming pronounced, with 19 sons at stud, with G1 Coolmore Stud S. and Diamond Jubilee S. winner Merchant Navy standing alongside him at Coolmore.

The list also includes Group 1 producers Smart Missile, Foxwedge, Wanted, Stryker and Rothesay. Rothesay is also destined to have a contender in The Everest in Rothfire, who was selected by miRunners for their slot last week, making it likely there will be at least three runners with Fastnet Rock in their pedigree in Australia's richest race on October 17.

Merchant Navy | Standing at Coolmore

Late Yarraman Park stallion Hinchinbrook continues to leave a legacy for his own sire, with his dual Group 1-winning son Press Statement set to have his second crop hit the track this year, while Kingstar Farm debuts Unite And Conquer and Gold Front Breeding, Leonardo Da Hinchi.

"Already seven of his sons have produced Group 1 winners and his grandsons/daughters include the likes of Rothfire, Spright, Foxplay, Beat The Clock, Press Statement and Maid Of Heaven amongst others," Moore said.

"Clearly his best sire son to date is Hinchinbrook, which augurs well for Merchant Navy who is bred on the same Fastnet Rock/Snippets cross. He is the fastest son of Fastnet Rock and his first weanlings sold up to $210,000 – more than any other first crop sire this year – so we look forward to him carrying on the legacy of his sire and grandsire at Coolmore."

Tivaci is one of seven active stallions in New Zealand to feature Fastnet Rock in their pedigree. There are five of his sons, El Roca, Highly Recommended, Mongolian Falcon, Rock 'N' Pop and The Bold One (NZ), while Grangewilliam Stud's Derryn is by Hinchinbrook.

Success flows through

While Coolmore's elder statesman continues to deliver, it was also a bright weekend for two of the younger brigade at Jerry Plains. Vancouver got his first Australian stakes winner with Night Raid successful in the Listed Atlantic Jewel S. He then followed that up with his first American stakes winner thanks to Madone (USA) in the Listed Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S. The son of Medaglia D'Oro (USA) now has three stakes winners the three different countries after Mount Pleasant's victory in the G2 Nursery earlier this year. Incidentally, Mount Pleasant is out of a Fastnet Rock mare.

Pride Of Dubai, who has had two winners to date out of Fastnet Rock mares, celebrated his fourth stakes winner on Saturday with the victory of Fancy Man (Ire) in the Listed Ascendant S. at Haydock.

An untimely injury for a weanling purchase proved costly for a New Zealand father and son pinhooking team, but at least they can take credit for sourcing a high-profile prospect for the $15 million The Everest.

John and Mark Corcoran bought the G1 Lightning S. winner Gytrash (Lope De Vega {Ire}) for $70,000 out of Glastonbury Farms’ draft at the Inglis Great Southern Sale with the intention of on-selling for a tidy profit.

However, their hopes took a hit when Gytrash got hurt and opinions were later divided as to which auction the youngster might be best placed at.

“We got him home here, but he fractured a splint bone just below the hock and ended up with quite a big lump,” said Mark Corcoran, who with wife Jane operates Grangewilliam Stud the home of Group 1 producer Zed (NZ). “The vets said it would never be a problem though.

“I wanted to keep him for the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale, I just loved him. He was booked to go to the Melbourne Sale and the old man wanted to sell him there.

“I was gutted and by then they hadn’t really copped on to the Lope De Vegas and between Melbourne and the Ready to Run they really took off with the likes of Santa Ana Lane.”

Gytrash was subsequently put through Luke and Mags Andrews’ Maluka Thoroughbreds’ draft at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and was snapped up by trainer Gordon Richards for $40,000.

“It was quite a nasty fracture and it left an ugly lump and was probably a bit off-putting. The vets said it would never worry him and they were right,” Corcoran said.

“We were a bit disappointed Inglis put him in Book 2 at Melbourne as well – if he wins The Everest maybe Inglis will pay us the difference!”

Gytrash has won nine of his 20 races and his latest success in the G3 Concorde S. on Saturday took his earnings beyond $1.3 million and is now second favourite for The Everest for slotholder Inglis.

“He was an outstanding type and we didn’t have much success with him, but at least we’ve got some bragging rights to him I suppose,” Corcoran said.

His father John formerly operated Maranui Farm where he stood champion sire War Hawk II (USA) and then purchased Grangewilliam Stud from the estate of Captain Tim Rogers, whose family own Airlie Stud in Ireland.

Mark Corcoran with Derryn

Grangewilliam has been home to Group 1 producers Standaan (Fr), Yachtie, Al Akbar, Brilliance (USA), Stark South (USA) and Yachtie and in more recent times Zed.

“The property has a very good record of producing very good horses. Ian Parsons bred the G1 Caulfield Cup winner Silver Bounty and the 3-year-old Filly of the Year Sweet Offer before he sold it to the late Captain Tim Rogers,” John Corcoran said.

“Doriemus, who won the G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Caulfield Cup, was bred here and multiple Group 1 winner Happyanunoit. Apollo Run won the G2 Craiglee S. and was fourth in a Caulfield Cup and now Verry Elleegant.”

Zed, the sire of top-class mare Verry Elleegant (NZ), now stands alongside Hinchinbrook’s Group 2-winning son Derryn, whose first yearlings will be sold next year.

“Zed is flying and he’s got another good one in Herengawe. His run for third in the G3 Premier’s Cup was huge so Chris Waller has got two very good Zeds, which won’t do us any harm,” Mark Corcoran said.

“Everyone who has seen the Derryns loves them. I had Dean Hawthorne here the other day and he said you would have to be happy with that line of yearlings, he’s really stamping them. He bought Derryn as a yearling and he was rapt with them.”

However, under the dark shadow of COVID-19 like many he is taking a cautious approach to next year’s sale.

“It’s going to be a hard season, it’s tough out there. I think we’ll have eight in Book 1 and 22 or 23 all up,” Corcoran said. “I was very optimistic, but we’ll just have to wait and see and hope for the best.”

Madone first Northern Hemisphere stakes winner for Vancouver

Vancouver reached another milestone on Saturday when his debut winner Madone (USA) added another star to his sire record with a Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf S. win.

Racing over 1600 metres on Del Mar’s turf course, Madone was among the back markers for most of the race with only two horses beat as the race favourite. With 100 metres to go, Madone grabbed the lead and never looked back for a 0.5l victory over Ivy League (USA) (Medaglia D'Oro {USA}), who was promoted to second when Nimbostratus (Fr) (Wootton Basset {GB}) was disqualified to third.

The first Northern Hemisphere stakes winner for Vancouver, following on quickly from his first Southern Hemisphere stakes winner on Saturday, Madone was a US$125,000 (AU$171,609) 2-year-old purchase in March for Kaleem Shah. The filly is out of a half-sister to stakes-winning Allegre (USA) (Orientate {USA}) from the family of Grade 1 winner Boisterous (USA) (Distorted Humor {USA}) and G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude winner Perast (Snitzel) among others.

Not This Time filly impresses in Debutante

The US$1.35 million (AU$1,853,377) 2-year-old Princess Noor (USA) (Not This Time {USA}) added another romping victory to her record on Sunday night with a win in the G1 Del Mar Debutante for Bob Baffert.

The filly broke inward in the 1400 metre race but was quickly among the leaders, running just behind the pacemaker in the early stages. Taking control in the final 400 metres, Princess Noor never felt the whip as jockey Victor Espinoza geared down the Bob Baffert-trainee in the final furlong for an easy 6.5l victory over Forest Caraway (USA) (Bodemeister {USA}).

From the first crop of Not This Time (USA), Princess Noor is one of two winners out of Grade 3 winner Sheza Smoke Show (USA) (Wilko {USA}) and ninth generation of her female line to win or place in a stakes race.

Persian King Rules in G1 Prix du Moulin

Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) proved to be the best of a loaded G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp field on Saturday for Godolphin SNC and Ballymore Thoroughbreds.

Facing five other Group 1 winners, he raced just behind the leading Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for much of the 1600 metre race open lengths in front of the rest of the field. The 4-year-old easily took over in the final 400 metres with the only threat in the closing stage coming from a fast closing Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal {USA}).

Persian King secured his third career Group 1 by 1.75l with Circus Maximus a further 6l back in third.

“Persian King’s victory was expected, to be fair. I don’t want to play the genius, but I was very confident because I could train him properly for the first time,” Andre Fabre told Thoroughbred Daily News. “The surfaces were better than in August and it was less warm, so I could train him harder.”

The victory was one of two Group victories at Longchamp by Kingman (GB) sons on Sunday with Chachnak (Fr) the winner of the Group 3 La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte.

Persian King is out of the winning Dylan Thomas (Ire) mare Pretty Please (Ire), a three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and a half-sister to Listed Ballarat Cup winner Pilote D’Essai (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Persian King’s fourth dam is also the granddam of champion racehorse and successful sire Peintre Celebre (USA).

Vequist gives Nyquist first graded stakes winner

On the day after the 2020 Kentucky Derby, the 2016 Kentucky Derby sired his first Grade 1 winner when Nyquist (USA)’s 2-year-old Vequist (USA) led home a first and third finish for her sire in the G1 Spinaway S. over 1400 metres at Saratoga.

Vequist raced at the leader’s hip from the start, just waiting for the time to pounce. That time came with 500 metres left to run when Vequist had to enter a small duel before pulling away to win by 9.5l.

Esplanande (USA) (Daredevil {USA}) split the Nyquist fillies in second while Lady Lilly (USA) finished 11.25l ahead of fourth.

“That race got a very good number and we knew she was a quality racehorse,” said trainer Robert Reid Jnr. “That horse was in and out in front of her and she never hesitated, never balked and just kept on running."

From the first crop of her sire, Vequist is one of two winners out of the Grade 2-placed Vero Amore (USA) (Mineshaft {USA}). The filly hails from the extended family of US Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Storm Song (USA) (Summer Squall {USA}), the granddam of dual G1 Irish St Leger winner Order Of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Glycon latest Group winner for Zelding

Part of a family that gets updates nearly weekly, Glycon (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) secured his first stakes victory in the G3 La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte.

Racing with just one horse beat early on in the 2000 metre affair as OTI Racing’s Mr Satchmo (Fr) (Mr Sidney {USA}) set the pace, Glycon made a late run and struck the lead just a few strides before the wire. The 4-year-old gelding by a short neck over Villa Rosa (Fr) (Doctor Dino {Fr}) with Les Vertus (Fr) (Shakespearean {Ire}) third by a head.

Glycon is a grandson of top broodmare Zelding (Ire) (Warning {GB}) out of her Listed winning and multiple Group 1-placed daughter Glorious Sight (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}). That mare is a half-sister to Beauty Is Truth (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}).

Among Beauty Is Truth’s four Group winners is G1 Ranvet S. winner The United States (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and two other Group 1 winners.

Called To The Bar wins Prix Gladiateur

Henrythenavigator (USA) gelding Called To The Bar (Ire) returned to the winner’s enclosure on Sunday with a victory in the G3 Prix Gladiateur over 3100 metres.

Racing near the back of the pack for most of the race, the gelding made his presence known in the final 400 metres. He secured the lead soon after for an easy 1.25l win over So You Think’s (NZ) Think Of Me (Ger) with Sublimis (Ire) (Shamardal {USA}) third.

Owned by breeder Fair Salinia, Called To The Bar is a half-brother to stakes placed Defrost My Heart (Ire) (Fastnet Rock) who spent two years racing in Australia before returning to Ireland in 2016. Their dam Perfect Hedge (GB) (Unfuwain {USA}) has her own sibling connection to Australia as well with half-brother He’s Your Man (Fr) (Cape Cross {Ire}) winning the 2014 G1 Epsom H. and finishing third in the G1 Chipping Norton.

Whip reform

Racing Victoria will look to gradually ban the use of the whip unless it’s being used as a safety measure.

RV will seek a vote at the November 2020 Racing Australia (RA) Board meeting to begin transitioning a significant reduction in the permitted use of the whip in a race. Ultimately, RV hopes the significant reduction will lead to the whip only being used to protect the safety of horses and jockeys.

“RV will propose that, from January 1, 2021, riders are only permitted to use the whip on a maximum number of occasions throughout the entire race and never in a horse’s consecutive strides,” a statement from RV said. “RV is proposing that the maximum number be between five and eight occasions per race.

“RV believes that the current national whip rules are no longer appropriate and not in the best interests of Victorian and Australian racing, both now and in the long-term.

“In calling for whip reform, RV articulated that jockeys should be permitted to continue to carry whips at all times, but that the industry should be working towards a framework where their use is only permitted in circumstances necessary to protect the safety of riders and horses.”

Camelot set for Makybe

Russian Camelot (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) will kick off his spring campaign in the G1 Makybe Diva S. at Flemington on Saturday and trainer Danny O’Brien believes he is ready to go.

Russian Camelot (Ire) (blue and white check)

“Fitness won’t be any problem - the horse is more than fit enough,” O’Brien told Racing.com. “It’s just a matter of whether he can win a Group 1 race at a mile I suppose.

“That’s what he’s got to get over. He was very good in Group 1 class last time (SA Derby) but his last run at a mile was in a BM64.

“It’s another thing entirely to win a mile weight-for-age race for him but he’s a very talented horse and we’re certainly not ruling it out.”

Fierce Impact on song

Fierce Impact (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) is already a Group 1 winner over the Flemington mile and trainer Matthew Smith believes he is in for another big spring after an impressive first-up third in the G1 Winx S.

"It was an excellent return to racing. It was good to see him come back in that manner as an older horse," Smith said.

"His work has been good since, but it has been all preparation. He's been really good this preparation.

"For a 7-year-old stallion he's going about everything really professionally."

Fierce Impact (Jpn)

Although Fierce Impact's best form is over 1600 metres, Smith believes he is looking for 2000 metres.

"He won the Summer Cup at Randwick in late 2018 over 2000 metres. I've been keen to get him back out to the trip again," Smith said.

"I was going to run him in the Australian Cup last campaign but he then got in the All-Star Mile so we went to that race."

Queen back for Flemington

After overcoming a foot abscess, Arcadia Queen (Pierro) will look to get her spring back on track in the G2 Let’s Elope S. at Flemington on Saturday.

Arcadia Queen

“She missed that race (Memsie) so we’ll bring her back to 1400 (metres) and she should come in pretty well at the weights,” owner Bob Peters told Racing.com.

“She’s been back working. She’ getting the work into her now. Hopefully, she gets back on track to where she should have been.”

Straight to The Everest

Gordon Richards will send Gytrash (Lope De Vega {Ire}) straight to The Everest next start after his stunning win on the weekend.

“I tossed around a few ideas after his win on the weekend,” Richards told Racing.com.

"I initially had planned to run him in a fortnight in The Shorts or there is another race in four weeks but ultimately I’m comfortable going straight to The Everest without another run.

"He will have a couple of easy weeks in the water walker and then we will ramp him up once again.

"His record fresh is outstanding and he will be ready for the Grand Final come October 17.

"My wife Jacqui and I are heading home to Adelaide on Tuesday and we then will do our self-isolation for the required two weeks.

"We will then fly back to Sydney a fortnight out from The Everest.”

Pride to unveil Everest hopefuls

Joe Pride will step out G1 All Aged S. placegetter Fasika (So You Think {NZ}) in the G3 Sheraco S. on Saturday and G2 Missile S. winner Eduardo (Host {Chi}) in the G2 The Shorts at Randwick next week to make their cases for a spot in The Everest.

"She runs this week, he runs the week after. They're not colts so they've got to do their talking on the racetrack," Pride said.

"People know I want to get them in. If he knocks them off in The Shorts he is a logical pick for someone. There will be drop outs, there always is.”

Fasika

Given she is only lightly-raced, Pride has no doubt Fasika still has upside and can go to a new level this preparation.

"She will most likely go there (Saturday) and then the (Golden) Pendant," Pride said.

"If she did go to The Everest, my plan would be to go there third-up, three weeks between runs. I like the idea of coming back slightly in distance with my horses, they really hit the line when I do it."

Rupert Clarke for Tagaloa

G1 Blue Diamond S. winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) will bypass Saturday’s G2 Danehill S. and instead run in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. ahead of a tilt at the G1 Caulfield Guineas.

The 3-year-old colt resumed in the G3 McNeil S. and was narrowly beaten by Immortal Love (Snitzel).

Tagaloa

"It took a lot out of him being his first run, so we decided not to go to the Danehill and give him an extra week,” owner Ozzie Kheir told Racing.com. “So we will go to the Rupert Clarke, it's a Group 1, he will get in first around 54kg and have his chance there.

"We might look at riding him a little more quieter than we have been. He's always had to do all the work and be on pace.

"We will look at that then going into the Guineas with that being his grand final. From there we will assess, if he comes through that run and he still has gas in the tank then we will look at the Cox Plate if he is up to that level."

Barbie in Sydney

Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) will resume in the G2 Sheraco S. at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Tony Gollan-trained 5-year-old will be reunited with regular jockey Jim Byrne, who is in Sydney to ride Rothfire (Rothesay) in the G2 Run To The Rose.

Byrne may also partner another Queenslander in Tyzone (Written Tycoon) when the G1 Stradbroke H. winner steps out in the G2 Theo Marks S.

It will be Outback Barbie’s second visit to Sydney, having finished third in the 2018 edition of the G2 Percy Sykes S.

Group 1 performer retired

The Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Princess Kereru (NZ) (Pins) has been retired after finishing 11th in Saturday’s G2 Foxbridge Plate.

The 7-year-old is a Group 3 winner and was narrowly beaten into second in the 2019 G1 Railway S.

“She was going to stud this year anyway and has a booking to Almanzor,” Ken Kelso said.

“The plan was to race her and if her form warranted it to race her on in-foal, but it was a sub-par performance on Saturday, and we thought it best that she be retired now. She’s probably done enough.”

Lease filly shines

A lease arrangement brokered by Novara Park principal Luigi Muollo has allowed Sweynesse’s former trackwork rider to share in his black-type success at stud.

Muollo bred his daughter Only Words (NZ), who scored an impressive victory in the Listed HS Dyke Wanganui Guineas. She became the second stakes winner for the stallion who was New Zealand’s leading first-season sire in 2019/20.

After Only Words was passed in as a weanling at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka May Sale, Muollo leased her to Te Awamutu trainer Clinton Isdale, who shares ownership with Asian World Racing Ltd.

“It’s turned out to be quite a special story,” Muollo said. “Clint used to work for Godolphin and he actually rode Sweynesse in trackwork during the time he was there.

“He rode a few good ones for Godolphin, but when we brought Sweynesse over to stand at Novara Park, he came to me and said he thought he was the best he’d ridden. I was quite stunned when he told me that.

“We’ve stayed in touch, and that’s how the lease arrangement came about. For Clint to win the Wanganui Guineas with a daughter of Sweynesse is an amazing thrill for him and for me.”

Grylls taking flight

Craig Grylls began the spring in the best possible fashion at Te Rapa on Saturday, riding a winning treble, including his first stakes victory for the season, to take him to the top of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Premiership.

“It was a great day. It’s always good to get a few on the board and get the prizemoney up a bit,” Grylls said.

Adding to the occasion, the Matamata jockey rode home a double for employers Kevin and Jo Hickman of Valachi Downs when victorious aboard Karalino (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}) and Communique (NZ) (Redwood {GB}).

While Grylls got a big thrill in securing a double for the Hickmans, it was his win aboard Need I Say More (No Nay Never {USA}) in the G3 Northland Breeders’ S. that proved to be the highlight of the meeting.

“He is a grouse horse. He is a beautiful, big, strong horse and has got a lot of ability,” he said.

Looking Ahead - September 8

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we fancy the chances of a pair of lightly-tried 3-year-olds at Scone while at Moe we like a debutante who has plenty of Group 1 form in her immediate pedigree.

Scone, Race 1, 1.35pm AEST, Get Your Kosciuszko Tickets Plate, $22,000, 1300m

Tempel One (Real Impact {Jpn}) was initially a $75,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale buy and subsequently made $310,000 at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale. He is a half-brother to the multiple winner and G3 Spring S. runner-up Game Of Thorns (Animal Kingdom {USA}). Their dam Only Roses (Redoute’s Choice) is a half-sister to the Group 3 winners The Inevitable (Dundeel {NZ}) and Blahnik (Jeune {GB}).

Tempel One as a yearling

Prepared by Paul Messara, Tempel One placed in one of his two starts last preparation and looks to have come back well. He won his first trial on the course and then finished runner-up at Gosford so he should be forward enough to shine for rider Christian Reith.

Scone, Race 3, 2.50pm AEST, Yarraman Park H., $22,000, 1150m

Deep Value (Deep Field) has been genuine with placings at her last three appearances and she can use that race experience to a winning advantage here. Another major factor in the filly’s favour is the inside gate and jockey Grant Buckley should give the 3-year-old every opportunity to break through.

Deep Field, sire of Deep Value | Standing at Newgate Farm

The Mark Newnham-trained Deep Value is the first representative of the I Am Invincible mare Miss Antaeus, who was a winner and stakes-placed. She is a half-sister to the dam of the G3 Festival S., winner Testashadow (Testa Rossa) and this is the family of the dual Group 1 winner and successful sire Zoustar.

Moe, Race 1, 1.30pm, S&S Equipment Hire Plate, $23,000, 1011m

Cave Hill (Not A Single Doubt) was a $220,000 Magic Millions Gold Cast Yearling Sale purchase and is a sister to the winner and Listed Dequetteville S. runner-up Maqsad. They are daughters of the More Than Ready (USA) mare Moojeh and she is a half-sister to the seven-time Group 1 winner Grand Armee (Hennessy {USA}).

Cave Hill as a yearling

Their dam Tambour (Marauding {NZ}) was second in the G1 Queensland Oaks and is a sister to the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Drum and a half-sister to the G1 Australasian Oaks winner Anamato (Redoute’s Choice). Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Cave Hill hasn’t trialled, but confidence can be drawn from her pedigree and the stable is enjoying an excellent run of results.
