Balaklava, Listed TQCSI Balaklava Cup, $100,000, 1600m

Race summary

Winning Partner (Dawn Approach {Ire}) was just too good when winning the Balaklava Cup and gave Tony McEvoy his third win in the race in six years and his second since training in partnership with his son Calvin.

The 5-year-old gelding settled well back in the field and needed a lot of luck in the straight but he burst through the field and ran away to win by 1.4l.

Analytica (NZ) (Shocking) finished second with Tony and Calvin McEvoy also landing third in the race with Savatoxl (Kuroshio).

Pedigree notes

Winning Partner was purchased by McEvoy Mitchell Racing for $110,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale from the draft of Glenelg Park and is the third winner from three foals out of Lady Frere (Johannesburg {USA}).

Lady Frere is herself a half-sister to dual Listed winner General Peekay (General Nediym).

Winning Partner also becomes the fourth Australian stakes winner for former Darley shuttler Dawn Approach (Ire), and the 11th overall.
