Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we like the chances of an expensive yearling purchase of Lloyd Kennewell, a Sacred Falls (NZ) filly who steps up in distance at Ballarat, and a colt that hails from an important breed-shaping family.
Ballarat Synthetic, Race 3, 2pm AEST, The Haymarket Maiden Plate, $35,000, 1400m
Kazuhiko (Deep Impact {Jpn}) has had two starts for two runner-up performances. He finished second behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Kuzco Lad (Zoustar) last start, who has since come out and won again.
Kazuhiko as a yearling
Trained by Lloyd Kennewell, Kazuhiko was bought for $1.7 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is a son of the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Grito, who is a half-sister to the three-time Group 1 winner Yell (Anabaa {USA}).
Ballarat Synthetic, Race 7, 4.10pm AEST, Hygain Winners Choice H., $35,000, 1400m
Peskijen (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}) was impressive winning on debut last start over 1200 metres. She was trapped three-wide without cover and showcased a good turn of foot in the straight to win by 0.4l. The step-up in distance looks ideal for the David Brideoake-trained filly and she seems very progressive going forward.
Sacred Falls (NZ), sire of Peskijen (NZ) | Standing at Waikato Stud
Peskijen was purchased by Cape Schanck Stud for NZ$220,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of Waikato Stud and is one of five winners from five to race out of Listed Northland Breeders S. winner Queen Sabeel (NZ) (Savabeel), making her a half-sister to the stakes-placed Sagunto (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}).
Nowra, Race 2, 1.55pm AEST, Remembering Gowan Williams Plate, $22,000, 1400m
The Empire (Not A Single Doubt) was purchased by Darby Racing and de Burgh Equine for $210,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud and is one of three foals to race out of Royal Snippets (Royal Academy {USA}).
Out of breed shaping mare Snippet’s Lass (Snippets), Royal Snippets is a half-sister to Snitzel and Hinchinbrook, as well as stakes producers Viennese (Redoute’s Choice), Wiener (More Than Ready {USA}) and Viennese Lass (Redoute’s Choice).
