Randwick 2YO Trials Preview

Monday's much-anticipated 2-year-old trial session at Randwick features nine heats with a total of 69 juveniles engaged. We have previewed each heat to pick out the likely talking points from each trial.

Please note: Heat 1 is a Group and Listed Trial for the older horses.

Heat 2: 9:15am AEST - Colts and Geldings - 850m

The Peter and Paul Snowden Bullpen (Deep Field) is the most expensive yearling in the opening heat, having cost China Horse Club/Newgate/Stonestreet $650,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is one of several horses whose dams are half-sisters to stakes winners, in his case, his dam Lindy Lou is a half to Cent Per Cent (Secret Savings {USA}).

Another Snowden runner, Kalashnikov, is the first of Capitalist's colts to appear and creates plenty of interest. He was purchased by James Harron on the Gold Coast and is out of Rough Ride (Flying Spur), the half-sister to G1 Queensland Derby winner Eagle Way (More Than Ready {USA}) as well as three other stakes winners. At $600,000, he was the second most expensive first-crop yearling by his sire.

Judgement Day (Not A Single Doubt), a $260,000 Gold Coast purchase for Darby Racing/De Burgh Equine, is out of a half-brother to Group 2 winner Gypsy Diamond and is one of two runners for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who also have the unusually bred Navajo (Moonlark {USA}) engaged.

Heat 3: 9:30am AEST - Fillies - 850m

The first two runners for Newgate's Flying Artie feature here in the fillies; Miss Hoff, who is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, and Opportunity Missed, prepared by Maher and Eustace. Miss Hoff is out of Beach Babe (Falvelon), the half-sister to G1 Schweppes Oaks winner Irish Darling (Ivory's Irish) and cost $120,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, while Opportunity Missed was passed in at that same Sale and is out of Scrum (Flying Spur), a half-sister to Group 1 winner and Newgate stallion Extreme Choice.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Sabiette (Not A Single Doubt) was a $170,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale purchase out of the Listed winning mare Sabie (Exceed And Excel), while the most expensive yearling in the heat is also by Not A Single Doubt, the Waterhouse and Bott-trained Vaccine, who cost $220,000 on the Gold Coast and is out of American stakes winner A Brilliant Idea (USA) (Afleet Alex {USA}).

Shocking Force is the first 2-year-old to trial for former Coolmore shuttler Air Force Blue (USA).

Heat 4: 9:45am AEST - Colts and Geldings - 850m

This heat is highlighted by the appearance two quite pricey I Am Invincible colts from the Snowden stable in Construct and King Of Sparta. King Of Sparta was a $700,000 buy for China Horse Club/Newgate/Starlight Racing at Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. He is out of G3 Cockram S. winner Octavia (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), Construct was a $600,000 colt from the same sale and racing in the same silks and is out of the Lonhro mare Martindale Hall.

Danaustar (Zoustar) is out of Group 3 winning and Group 1-placed mare in Danaupair Starlet (Delago Brom), while River Snitty (Snitzel) is from a half-sister to champion New Zealand stallion Savabeel. Feirme Prince, trained by Matthew Dunn, is the first representative of Arrowfield shuttle stallion Shalaa (Ire).

Shalaa is also represented in Heat 5 through Bahahaa, a $200,000 Magic Millions buy for her trainers Waterhouse and Bott and a granddaughter of Group 1 winner Danelagh (Danehill [USA}), which is also the family of Group 1 winners Vengeance Of Rain (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), Dizelle (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and Pinot (Pierro).

Waterhouse and Bott also have the most expensive yearling of this heat in Our Filly (Exceed And Excel), who cost $240,000 at the same Sale. She hails from a well-credentialed international family through her dam Our Sea (USA) (Kingmambo {USA}).

There are also a couple of well-bred Written Tycoon fillies engaged in the Maher and Eustace-trained Enthaar and Bjorn Baker's Little Miss Magic.

Five of the 10 entries in this trial are by first-season sires, with Maurice's Medad (Maurice {Jpn}), Peacemaker (American Pharoah {USA}), Revivalist (Shalaa {Ire}), Silver Thorn (Capitalist) and Wilsons Prom (Xtravagant {NZ}).

The Chris Waller Peacemaker is the most high-profile, having cost $600,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale when purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock. His dam, Peaceful Sea (Fastnet Rock) hails from a strong American family.

Joyous Legend (Snitzel) is the profile filly in this heat, being out of champion mare More Joyous (More Than Ready {USA}) and having cost Bon Ho $800,000 at this year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. She makes her first public appearance for trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou.

Insurgence (Sebring) cost CHC/Newgate/Stonestreet $825,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, and the son of Group 3 winner She's Got Gears (Invincible Spirit {Ire]) steps out here for the Snowdens, who also send out the I Am Invincible colt, Oblique, the son of Listed winner Twist Tops (Beneteau). He was a $260,000 Gold Coast buy for James Harron.

Waller's colt Best Side (Not A Single Doubt) was a $650,000 Inglis Easter purchase who hails from a very strong family, including last year's G1 Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}).

The first-season sire representatives are Keith (Winning Rupert) and Zeitakuna (Xtravagant {NZ}).

On her pedigree, it’s not hard to see why BK Racing and Guy Mulcaster paid $650,000 for Authentic Jewel (I Am Invincible) at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, seeing she hails from the family of Octagonal (NZ), Commands, Don Eduardo (NZ) and the like, with her granddam Diamond Smile (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) another Group 1 winner for the family. She lines up for Chris Waller.

The Waterhouse-Bott prepared Excela Bella (Exceed And Excel) is another with a terrific page, being a blood sister to G1 Blue Diamond S. winner Earthquake (Exceed And Excel). She cost $250,000 at the Gold Coast.

There will be considerable attention of the Waller-trained Montenegro (I Am Invincible) in this heat, given he cost Coolmore's Tom Magnier $1.4 million at the Inglis Australian Easter Sale. He is out of G2 VRC Sires' Produce S. winner Twilight Royale (Testa Rossa).

We get our first look at the progeny of Star Turn with the Snowden-trained Astrologer, who cost James Harron $300,000 on the Gold Coast and is from the family of Crystal Dreamer (Stratum) and Persuader (Zoustar). The Snowdens also present a Capitalist colt named Captivant, who was a $550,000 Magic Millions buy from the extended family of Headwater.

There are a couple of well-related Snitzel colts in Retiro and Scarzel, while there is also a Flying Artie colt named Schwarzenegger, who is a half-brother to Group 1-placed Zamzam (Redoute's Choice).
