Breeze-up videos now online

All videos from horses that have breezed ahead of the Inglis Ready2Race Sale are now available online following another successful day of action at Taupo in New Zealand on Monday.

In total, 47 juveniles breezed across the Tasman, with a pair of Ohukia Lodge 2-year-olds leading the way.

Lot 59, a Capitalist colt out of Mothwing and Lot 95, a Deep Field colt out of Riddling, clocked the day’s equal fastest time of 10.19s.

Attention now heads to Riverside Stables for the sale itself, which will take place from 10am AEST on Tuesday, October 20.

New rider for Vow

Craig Williams will not partner Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}) in the G1 Turnbull S. next Saturday with Danny O’Brien opting to put Damien Oliver on board instead.

"Damien Oliver will ride Vow And Declare, as he did in last year's Turnbull," O'Brien told RSN927.

"Damien will have the option going forward.”

Legacy out to spoil Rothfire's Rose

The G2 Run To The Rose winner Rothfire (Rothesay) is a dominant G1 Golden Rose favourite but rival trainer Peter Snowden has questioned whether that form will stack up.

His charge King's Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) finished last but recorded the second quickest final 200 metres sectional of the race, which was run at a hectic tempo.

While King's Legacy bounced out of the run, Snowden wasn't sure if every horse would have coped as well as his colt.

"He never lightened off at all after that run the other day and that was a hard run for every horse in the race," Snowden said.

"The pace it was run at, everyone was chasing a long way out so it's a gut-busting run really, but he came through it with flying colours.

"You look at a few of those horses, they all looked like Group horses a month ago and just through having hard runs, you wonder if they will all be able to keep going."

Pippie set to fire

G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Pippie (Written Tycoon) is undefeated in three first-up runs and trainer Chris Meagher believes she's on track to defend that record in Friday’s G1 Moir S.

"It's a good field with fast horses but she's ready to go. We'll use her speed from barrier five," Meagher said.

"If a horse wants to lead up that's up to them but they'll have to be running around 10 seconds for the 200 metres to do so.”

Cherry ripe

Patrick Payne believes his G1 Victoria Derby hope Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) is on song for Friday’s G2 Stutt S. at The Valley.

"He is a lovely horse to deal with. He had a nice little gallop at Moonee Valley on Monday morning and he's in good shape," Payne said.

"(The gallop on Monday) was just to get him out of the house for the day, basically. He had a very easy time.

"He is ready to go and this race fits well into his campaign. He needs to race this weekend, and it will be perfect."

Promising start

Rocket Spade (Fastnet Rock) made the perfect start to his racing career when winning on debut at Matamata on Wednesday.

The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained 3-year-old jumped well from barrier 10 and settled midfield for jockey Craig Grylls. They improved four-wide turning for home and he was able to run away to a 0.75l victory.

“We were pleased with him, he quickened well, but he has still got a lot to learn,” Scott said.

“The most encouraging thing for us was how he went through the line and sustained a good gallop.

“We were confident he would run well, but we were cautious of the barrier draw.

“Often at Matamata it is hard to make ground, but fortunately Craig got him in from the draw and managed to keep the leaders in his sights.”

10 for Vadamos

Rich Hill Stud shuttler Vadamos (Fr) sired his 10th European first-crop winner on Tuesday when the Ralph Beckett-trained Desert Empire (Ire) scored on debut over a mile at Lingfield in England.

The 2-year-old gelding showcased an electric turn of foot to defeat Vino Victrix (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) by 0.5l with 1l back to Hemsworth (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in third.

Vadamos is standing for a fee of NZ$15,000 (plus GST) at Rich Hill this season.

Karakontie colt highlights Book 5 opener

A colt by Karakontie (Jpn) achieved a very rare feat in Keeneland September’s Book 5 opener Tuesday, summoning a session-topping US$500,000 (AU$700,000) from Marsha Naify.

The Gainesway stallion had another yearling in the top five lots of the day with a full sister to Graded stakes-bound Spanish Loveaffair (USA) (Karakontie {Jpn}) (Hip 3161) bringing US$220,000 (AU$308,000) from Ballyfair Bloodstock.

A total of 253 yearlings brought US$6,484,100 (AU$9.077 million) Tuesday with an average of US$25,629 (AU$35,880) and a median of US$15,000 (AU$21,000). Fifty-five horses failed to meet their reserves Tuesday.

Throughout the first nine days of trade, 1,880 youngsters sold for a gross of US$240,340,300 (AU$33.64 million) with an average of US$127,841 (AU$178,977) and median of US$62,000 (AU$86,800).

“It has been really thin except for top horses in your draft,” said Brian Graves of Gainesway, which bred and consigned the day’s top lot. “The top horses have a lot of action and bring more than you think they will bring and the horses below that are tougher to sell and you really have to adjust your expectations and be willing to let the market say what they are worth.”

Bast to be offered at Fasig-Tipton November

Three-time Grade 3 winner Bast (USA) (Uncle Mo {USA}), in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify (USA) (Scat Daddy {USA}), will be offered at this year’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale through Hill ‘N’ Dale Sales Agency, who will consign the 3-year-old bay on behalf of owner Charles Chu’s Baoma Corporation.

“Bast was a fantastic racemare,” said John Sikura of consignor Hill ‘N’ Dale. “Selected and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, in foal to Triple crown winner Justify, and by leading sire Uncle Mo. She is without fault and has everything a breeder desires–class, performance, and pedigree at the highest levels.”

Added Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning: “Bast is another tremendous racehorse campaigned by Charles and Susan Chu. Her brilliance on the racetrack and impeccable pedigree make her a broodmare with unlimited potential.”
