Looking Ahead - September 30

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we fancy the winning chances on the Kensington track at Randwick of a pair of lightly-tried fillies who both placed at their most recent appearances while at Sportsbet Ballarat we are in the camp of a 3-year-old who turned in a strong performance to place in his only start.

Kensington, Race 1, 2pm AEST, Sky Racing Active Plate, 1400m

Seleque (Deep Field) was a $150,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase out of Goodwood Farm’s draft and is a half-brother to the winner All A Spritz (All American), also successful in Hong Kong as Beauty Spark. Their dam is the unraced Bubbly Duchess (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}).

Deep Field, sire of Seleque | Standing at Newgate Farm

She is a half-sister to the G2 Autumn Classic winner Extra Zero (Domesday) and the G3 Adrian Knox S. winner Operetta Lass (Singspiel {Ire}). Trained by Chris Waller, Seleque has finished in the money in all three of her starts and from the inside gate looks a top chance to gain a deserved victory.

Kensington, Race 2, 2.35pm AEST, Impending @ Darley H., $50,000, 1250m

Newsreader (Press Statement) competed well in strong company last season and was third on debut behind three-time winner Macroura (Snitzel) and then ran fifth in the Listed Woodlands S. She resumed from a break to place and that should have her ready for the first winning strike of her career.

Newsreader as a yearling

Trained by John O’Shea, Newsreader was bought for $170,000 at the Gold Coast where she was offered by Yarraman Park Stud and is a daughter of the dual winner Thinking Of You (NZ) (Thorn Park), who also ran third in the G1 Flight S. She is out of a half-sister to the G3 Frank Packer Plate winner Spurred On (Flying Spur) and the family of the G2 Kewney S. winner Eureka Jewel (Semipalatinsk {USA}).

Sportsbet Ballarat, Race 2, 1.35pm AEST, Hewitt & Whitty Plate, $35,000, 1400m

Lindsay Park representative Kentucky Dream (Sebring) is a half-brother to Medal Kun (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), a black-type winner and multiple stakes placegetter in Singapore, and to the dam of the Listed Canberra Guineas winner Final Award (Smart Missile).

Kentucky Dream as a yearling

Kentucky Dream is out of the unraced Run For Roses (Danehill {USA}) and she is a half-sister to the G1 Goodwood H. winner and successful sire Keeper. He was bought out of Kitchwin Hills’ draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $90,000 and off a sound debut third looks a strong chance to open his winning account.
