Looking Ahead - October 17

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we have taken a shine to a pair of well-related Peter and Paul Snowden-trained stablemates making their first appearances at Randwick and Newcastle while at Caulfield we like the chances of an improving filly from Anthony and Sam Freedman’s team.

Randwick, Race 1, 12.30pm AEDT, ACY Securities Victory Vein Plate, $125,000, 1000m

Captivant (Capitalist) was successful in his only trial appearance for Peter and Paul Snowden and from a handy gate he should be given every opportunity by rider Jason Collett to carry that form over to race day.

Captivant as a yearling

A $550,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from the draft of Ashleigh Thoroughbreds, Captivant is a son of Speedboat (Commands), whose first foal Anna Cecilia (More Than Ready {USA}) has been successful, and she is a half-sister to Cross Current (Keltrice). He was a dual stakes winner and the family of the G1 New Zealand Derby winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) and the G2 Magic Might S. winner Willow Creek (Tale Of The Cat {USA}).

Newcastle, Race 1, 1.21pm AEDT, Sage Painting 3YO H., $35,000, 1200m

Team Snowden also look to have a bright winning prospect here with another debut runner in Bullet Hero (Vancouver). He has had three trials to prepare him for this and finished second in his most recent outing at Randwick.

Bullet Hero as a yearling

The colt was bought for $180,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale where he was offered by Lime Country Thoroughbreds. He is a half-brother to three winners, including Group 3 performer Moreau (Snitzel), their dam is the unraced Francophile (French Deputy {USA}). She is out of a half-sister to the European Group 1 winners and sires Arazi (USA) and Noverre (USA).

Caulfield, Race 2, 12.50pm AEDT, QMS Media Plate, $135,000, 1400m

Miss Conduct (Dissident) has showed pleasing improvement during her brief career with cheques at her first two runs before she cracked her maiden as a short-priced favourite at Sale. This is another step up, but she is getting better all the time and looks more than capable of making her presence felt.

Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, Miss Conduct is a half-sister to three winners, including the exciting Masked Crusader (Toronado {Ire}), while her half-brother by Sebring named Insurgence made $825,000 at the Gold Coast earlier this year. They are out of the Listed Ottawa S. winner She’s Got Gears (I Am Invincible), also a Group 3 placegetter.
