Race summary

Johnny Get Angry (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) provided trainer Denis Pagan and jockey Lackie King with their first Group 1 win as he out-stayed his rivals here.

King had Johnny Get Angry settled midfield and one off the fence on the back of favourite Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) and tracked up to his outside around the bend, challenging him all the way down the straight before hitting the front at the 300 metre mark and going on the win by 1l.

Matt Cumani came agonisingly close to training his first Group 1 winner as Hit The Shot (Dundeel {NZ}) flew home from well back in the field to score second while Young Werther managed to hold on to finish 0.2l away in third.

Purchased by Malua Racing and Flemington Bloodstock for NZ$50,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of Bradbury Park, Johnny Get Angry is the third foal out of placed mare Luminova (Redoute's Choice).

Luminova herself is out of Listed JRA Cup winner and G1 Queensland Oaks fourth Pavlova (Singspiel {Ire}), who is out of multiple stakes placegetter Hospitable (Luskin Star), making her a half-sister to G2 Autumn Classic winner and G1 Caulfield Guineas runner-up Fubu (Last Typhoon {Ire}).

Further back this is also the family of G1 South Australian Derby winner and G1 Melbourne Cup third Markham (Salieri {USA}) as well as G1 Mackinnon S. winner Side Glance (GB) (Passing Glance {GB}).

Luminova’s only foal since producing Johnny Get Angry is a yearling colt by Cambridge Stud shuttler Almanzor (Fr).

G1 Coolmore Stud S., $1,500,000, 1200m

Race summary

September Run (Exceed And Excel) proved her class down the Flemington straight and added a well-deserved Group 1 to her CV with a dominant win here.

Ridden by Craig Williams, she found cover throughout the initial stages of the race before being peeled out at the 400 metre mark and rocketing home from the 300 metres to go on and win by 1.75l.

Swats That (Shamus Award) finished off the race strongly to score second while Wild Ruler (Snitzel) was another 0.1l away in third.

September Run was a $380,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale purchase by Hermitage Thoroughbreds from the draft of Blue Gum Farm and is the first foal of the G3 Mumm S. and Listed Security S. winner Pittsburgh Flyer (Street Cry {Ire}).

She is a daughter of Warning Zone (SAF) (Elliodor {Fr}), who was a winner at Group 2 and 3 level in her homeland.

It is also the family of fellow South African Group winners Record Edge (SAF) (Sunny North {USA}), Golden Peak (SAF) (Peacetime {USA}), Magical Wonderland (SAF) (What A Winter {SAF}) and Magico (SAF) (Dupont {GB}).

Pittsburgh Flyer was purchased by Go Bloodstock Australia and Paul Moroney for $500,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale and has a 2-year-old filly named My Yankee Girl (American Pharoah {USA}), while she produced a filly by Merchant Navy this year and has since been bred back to Exceed And Excel.

G1 Kennedy Cantala S., $1,500,000, 1600m

Race summary

Yulong Prince (SAF) (Gimmethegreenlight) brought up a Group 1 double for master trainer Chris Waller as he landed a big win here.

The 6-year-old entire settled back in the field off a strong tempo and made his run at the top of the straight before holding off a late surge from Cascadian (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and winning by 0.2l.

The Team Hawkes-trained Rock (Pierro) put in a career-best performance as he finished 0.5l away in third.

As Surcharge, Yulong Prince won the G1 Greyville Daily News S. in South Africa before relocating to Australia and he is out of Congestion Charge (GB) (Diktat {GB}).

She is a half-sister to the black-type performer Endorsement (USA) (Warning {GB}), who produced the multiple Group 3 winner Mores Wells (USA) (Sadler’s Wells {USA}).

It’s a strong international family that includes the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Indian Haven (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and the G1 Gran Criterium winner Count Dubois (GB) (Zafonic {USA}).

G1 TAB Empire Rose S., $1,000,000, 1600m

Race summary

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Shout The Bar (Not A Single Doubt) won by the barest of margins to score her first victory since taking out the G1 Vinery Stud S. in the autumn.

The 4-year-old settled in the prime position one out one back under Damien Oliver and peeled out around the bend, eventually edging out 3-year-old filly Forbidden Love (All Too Hard).

Fellow 3-year-old filly Odeum (Written Tycoon) then made her run and looked the winner on the line but Shout The Bar managed to hold on and win by a lip.

Forbidden Love was game in defeat as she held on to finish another 0.5l away in third.

Shout The Bar was bred by Ron Finemore and Planette Thoroughbred Trading and is out of Drinks All Round (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), who won three races. She is out of a half-sister to the multiple Group 2 winner Satinka (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}) and also the stakes-placed She Wishes (NZ) (Kenfair {NZ}), who is the dam of G1 Doncaster and George Ryder S. hero Rangirangdoo (NZ) (Pentire {GB}).

She Wishes is also the dam of Group 3-placed Master Hunter (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and is the grandam of Queensland Oaks placegetter Lady Cuvee (NZ) (Savabeel).

Shout The Bar is the only foal to race for Drinks All Round. The mare has a 2-year-old Not A Single Doubt filly named Emerald Bay who has raced once, and foaled a colt by Not A Single Doubt this season.

G2 GH Mumm Wakeful S., $300,000, 2000m

Race summary

At just her fourth career start, the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Victoria Quay (Dundeel {NZ}) added a Group 2 win to her CV with a tough win here.

Ridden by Jamie Kah, the 3-year-old filly settled midfield just behind favourite Personal (Fastnet Rock) during the run and tracked up to her outside around the bend. The pair went toe to toe down the straight and despite Personal kicking back at the 300 metre mark, Victoria Quay fought hard to score a 0.3l win.

Tyche Goddess (Teofilo {Ire}) was gallant in defeat after hitting the front at the top of the straight and holding on the finish another 1.5l away in third, while Miravalle (Redoute’s Choice) flashed home for fourth.

Purchased by McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Suman Hedge Bloodstock for $250,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale from the draft of Rushton Park, Victoria Quay is the sixth foal to race out of Danehill Dancer (Ire) mare Swan River.

Swan River is a sister to dual Group winner Lieutenant and a half-sister to G2 Tulloch S. winner Count Encosta (Encosta De Lago) as well as the stakes-placed Jacquetta (Encosta De Lago).

Swan River has a 2-year-old filly named Swannie (Dissident) and a yearling colt by Invader, who was purchased by James Bester for $75,000 at the Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale, while she foaled a brother to Victoria Quay this season.

Race summary

The Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained Kemalpasa (Magnus) made it back-to-back wins in the Derby Day feature sprint with a strong win here.

The 6-year-old gelding settled at the front on the grandstand side of the track under Craig Williams and couldn’t be caught and he kicked clear in the final 50 metres to win by 1l.

Order Of Command (Squamosa) put up a good fight in the final stages of the race but could only manage second, while Bold Star (Needs Further) added another stakes placing to his CV, coming home 0.75l away in third.

Kemalpasa was purchased by co-trainer Richard Jolly for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is a son of the Bianconi (USA) mare Yarra Bank.

The dam is a half-sister to the Listed Heatherlie H. winner Honest Politician (Distorted Humor {USA}) and to the mother of the Listed Great Northern Guineas winner Yourein (Reset).

Yarra Bank is a daughter of Yarra Dreaming (NZ) (Nassipour {USA}) and she is a half-sister to the Listed Singapore Gold Cup winner Grand Jury (Deputy Governor {USA}).

Yarra Bank has a 2-year-old brother to Kemalpasa and foaled a filly by Impending this year.

G3 Network 10 Carbine Club S., $250,000, 1600m

Race summary

Crosshaven (Smart Missile) continued his fruitful spring, scoring his third stakes win in four starts here.

The Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-trained gelding enjoyed a comfortable lead throughout the race with stablemate and favourite Aysar (Deep Field) sitting just behind him before tracking up to his outside in the straight and hitting the front just before the 100 metre mark.

Crosshaven fought back though and edged off his stablemate to win by 0.3l in a nail-biting finish. Horrifying (NZ) (Shocking) and Endanger (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) dead-heated for third, coming home another 2.75l away in third.

Crosshaven was purchased by Lindsay Park Racing for NZ$80,000 from the Haunui Stud draft at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

He is one of five winners from five to race out of dual stakes winner Irish Colleen (NZ) (Shinko King {Ire}), who is also responsible for G3 White Robe Lodge S. scorer Killarney (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}).

Irish Colleen has a yearling filly by Zacinto (GB), which is her last foal since Crosshaven having missed to Sebring in 2018.

Race summary

International raider Ashrun (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}) secured his spot in the G1 Melbourne Cup with an impressive win here.

The Andrea Wohler-trained entire settled last on the rail under Kerrin McEvoy in a slowly run race but managed to get to the outside in the straight and stormed home to nab the Mike Moroney-trained Sound (Ger) (Lando {Ger}) on the line and win by 0.1l.

There was a second dead heat for third of the day as Furture Score (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Brimham Rocks (GB) (Fastnet Rock) finished another 1l away in third.

Race summary

Fiesta (I Am Invincible) brought up her second Group 3 victory in a row as she won with arrogance here.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, she settled at the back of the field and peeled to the outside at the 200 metre mark and rocketed home to win by 1.25l.

Too Good Too Hard (All Too Hard) ran home well to finish second while Zaniah (Zoustar) was another 1.1l away in third.
