Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we are in the camp of a couple of lightly-tried 3-year-olds who look leading maiden prospects at Rosehill while at The Valley we are expecting a smart debut winner to remain undefeated.
Rosehill, Race 2, 3.50pm AEDT, Bowerman’s Commercial Furniture H., $50,000, 1400m
Skywolf (Akeed Mofeed {GB}) was offered by breeder Goldin Farms at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale where he was purchased by trainers Team Hawkes for $110,000. He is a half-brother to the G2 Keeneland Shakertown S. winner Holding Gold (USA) (Lonhro) and their dam In The Gold (USA) (Golden Missile {USA}) won the G1 Belmont Gazelle S.
Skywolf as a yearling
She is a daughter of Incinerate (USA) (Groovy {USA}), successful in the G2 Aqueduct Bed O’ Roses H. and also the dam of the stakes winner High Blitz (USA) (Lucky Lionel {USA}). Skywolf made his first appearance at Echuca last month and closed well to finish third and a performance he can certainly improve on.
The Valley, Race 1, 5.30pm AEDT, MVRC Membership On Sale Now H., $50,000, 1200m
John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes also look to hold a trump card here with Passionate Lass (Sebring), who led all the way to coast to a debut victory at Mornington at the start of this month. From a handy gate and with Craig Williams in the saddle a repeat effort looks very much on the cards.
Passionate Lass as a yearling
Passionate Lass was purchased by Orbis Bloodstock for $120,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where she was offered by Widden Stud. The filly is a sister to four-time winner and Listed performer Motown Lil and their dam Tigress Lily (Snitzel) won four races. She is a daughter of the 2-year-old winner and multiple Group placegetter Empress Lily (Zabeel {NZ}) and her mother Tycoon Lil (NZ) (Last Tycoon {Ire}) was a former New Zealand Horse of the Year and multiple Group 1 winner.
Rosehill, Race 1, 3.10pm AEDT, Sky Racing Active Plate, $50,000, 1800m
Regulation (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}) has made a strong start to his career and was runner-up at Newcastle on debut behind The Elanora (Redoute’s Choice), subsequent winner of the G3 Spring S., and then third on a heavy track at Kembla Grange. He will relish the step up to 1800 metres and looks set to break through in the hands of James McDonald.
Contributer (Ire), sire of Regulation (NZ) | Standing at Mapperley Stud
A half-brother to five winners including stakes performer Regimen (Sepoy), Regulation is a son of Disciplined (Anabaa {USA}) who won on five occasions. She is out of a sister to the G1 Epsom H. winner Excellerator (Marscay) and is a half-sister to the G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Artistic (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}).
